Sparano releases statement through agent

Tony Sparano often texted me during his time as Dolphins head coach, sometimes to suggest columns, sometimes to criticize my columns, sometimes to thank me for columns or blogs. I reached out to him the past two days after his firing and he has not returned my texts.

That's fine. I get it.

He's an emotional guy. He's hurt. He probably doesn't understand that I had to write about his eroding job status -- because that's my job -- when that was the last thing he wanted in the newspaper.

But several people have told him he needs to make some sort of public statement to close the Dolphins chapter on his career. As he apparently doesn't want to speak or isn't ready to speak to the media, he's doing the next best thing:

He just released a statement through his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

It reads:

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Miami Dolphin organization, my players and coaches and our fans for all the help they gave me  during my time in Miami.  It was an honor and a privilege to have been the head coach for such a storied franchise as the Miami Dolphins. Visiting with Coach Shula before games, getting to know the Hall of Famers and so many other great Dolphin alumni, and being surrounded by the team’s tradition every day of the year are memories that will stay with me forever.

"I can’t say enough about our players  --  I love and appreciate them all and I value the effort they gave me from the very first moment I walked in the door. They practiced and played hard every day, and always put the success of the team ahead of themselves. It was a joy to work with these special men, and no one can ask for more than what they gave me. For this they will always have my gratitude, and I am proud to have coached them. My coaching and support staff were wonderful  --  I’ve never been around a better group of guys. There is no way I can thank them for their commitment and their loyalty. We worked hard together to reach a common goal and I appreciate their sacrifice and dedication.

"And finally, my wife Jeanette and I want to thank our great fans here. They made us feel at home the day we moved down and welcomed us with open arms. We enjoyed making so many friends and are grateful for the opportunities they gave us to contribute to the South Florida community. It’s a special place with special people, and we appreciate all their warmth and friendship. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported me during my tenure with the Dolphins. It was a special time in my life, and I’m looking forward to continuing my coaching career very soon.”

Coach is taking the high road. He's showing future employers he's a classy guy. He's boiling with venom toward Jeff Ireland and Stephen Ross, which he does not mention in his statement, but not showing any of that because, well, what is that going to accomplish?

Sparano never threw players under the bus even when they deserved it. He's not throwing the organization under the bus even though some members of his family have been told they're no longer allowed around the Dolphins facility for any reason whatever.

Good move by coach. Just as he was advised.

WOW.

He is a class-act, that's for sure. We wish you well in the future, Tony!

first? kind of sad, but needed to happen

Repost from the last blog:

Darryl,

No apology needed.

First off, there's not many here that can put together 4 paragraphs **PERIOD**.

Let alone 4 **COHERENT** paragraphs.

PS: Having said that, I couldn't disagree with you more on Mangini. It's like you said, who knows who is right. But considering whomever we hire gets at least a "two year pass", the thought of Mangini scares the living shyt out of me.

Of coure, whoever it is will get my BLIND ALLEGIANCE. Matter of fact, I'm SUDDENLY a gigantic Todd Bowles FAN!

He will be high demand as an assistant. He will be much better as a head coach if given a second opportunity.

"Tony Sparano often texted me during his time as Dolphins head coach, sometimes to suggest columns, sometimes to criticize my columns, sometimes to thank me for columns or blogs."

Armando!

What did he say about me? He liked my posts didn't he? I knew it.......I KNEW IT!

YEAH!!!!

Good Luck, Tony. Somebody is getting a great coach next year.

..Odin..Thanks bro.

Second. It's fine to disagree with my assesment of Mangini. I was just saying that he should be considered. There are others that I would perfer. I don't know who will be the right guy..Armando had a blog that was up for a minute listing some candidates..But it is gone in favor of the Sparano article.

What do you mean "Somebody"?

I heard it's a done deal, money in the bank!

SpOrano will Head Coach the Colts to the Super Bowl next year ;)

..........oh yeah..........LOL!

Bill Polian has a woody now. He's been waiting for Sparano to be fired!

There is a huge difference between being a head coach and an assistant. Much less pressure when you're only dealing with the o-line or linebackers than being in charge of everything.
So, if Tony does end up as an assistant elsewhere I wouldn't be surprised if he did well.

The unexpected Press Release probably caught Mando by surprise, so he pulled the other article.

I'll bet it pops up later tonight sometime. If it's talking about possible Coaches and who might be availiable, I'll be looking forward too it.

I wouldn't suggest ruling anyone out, anyone like Mangini. I'm just saying, the **THOUGHT** of it scare the heck out of me. Whoever it ends up being will hold our fate for the next three to four years. I guess anybody but the biggest names will be scary. Who knows?

hated your pressers but love you Tony. Best wishes!

Maybe you comeback someday and show these fools your hc championship sb ring while we're "STILL" waiting to get one.

Maybe even win your hc championship ring in Sunlife stadium while this fvcked franchise watches from home!

I couldn't resist YG. You've been cracking me up for the past few days :)

You so CRAZY-LOL!

Wow, these cowards didnt even have the ball to allow Tony to conduct a farewell presser to the fan from the facilities.

These same cowards many of you expect to lead this franchise to a championship.

CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever. Hit the road Sparano. Let's get someone in here who is UPSET with settling for field goals....not fist pumping them.

odin,

LOL

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS:

LET THE CURSE CONTINUE!

Real quick and I'm out:

DD, agreed on the last blog. Identity, and then find players to fit your scheme, NOT the other way around (even if it takes a couple of years to do it). Once you have the right scheme, the player part will be easy (since you'll know what to look for).

Also, I disagree with YG, encyclopedia's are good. That's the problem with America today, people want instant gratification. Video games, twitter, sound bites, PowerPoint slides, these provide ZERO knowledge. Express yourself, in as many words as you need, and at least THIS poster will read you.

kris, easy bro, you'll bring my stalking troll back.

Tony Sparano, can't say I agreed with many of your philosophies. Can't say I'm not happy to see you go. Can't say you didn't take years off my life watching your teams play. BUT, I will say that you're a classy guy, an honorable man, I respect the weight loss, I respect the fact that the players never quit on you (wait, what was the first part of every Season, oh well, not the time or place), I respect the fact that you made SOME adjustments that were fun to watch (Wildcat vs. NE, KC this year). Good luck in your future endeavors.

Peace out people, tomorrow soon come!

DD

You have far too much integrity to be apologizing for any reason to the #1 disrespectful BLOG FOOL, YG-DB.

Do your thing, the ahole will learn to accept it.

I always considered Ireland and SpOrano as Parcells Coat Tail riders. Thus, I made it my own little thing to purposely mispell his name SpOrano as in SpOre.

A few years down the road and I've realized I'm wrong. It's now my FIRM CONVICTION that SpOrano had the best Football Mind out of the so-called Trifecta.

I don't care if I was robbing banks or smuggling Turkish Heroin, I'd take SpOrano over the Mick and the Fat Guy every day of the week and twice on Sunday!

I loved and admired Tony's enthusiasm and attention to detail. I surely just wish things could have turned out better.

I'd like to take this oppurtunity to spell Tony's name properly:

Thank You Coach Sparano and Best Wishes Always!!!!

-Odin-

Sparano is a good guy.....He just wasnt up to the status of head coach....too much blind passion for ones own players through good and bad made him in over his head here in miami...

Good Luck Tony, nothin personal but in retrospect I wish Ireland wouldve been there right next to you out the door!!

"He's not throwing the organization under the bus even though his family has been told they're no longer allowed around the Dolphins facility for any reason whatever."

That is a dirt-bag move. What does that accomplish? Ireland should have been gone long before Sparano. Ross and Ireland are making it hard to be a Dolfan with their classless antics.

Good luck tony!

Yes I’m sure Tony sent you many texts because he valued your journalistic ability and all of your football knowledge! Give me a break you egotistical bag of wind! You can’t even let a guy send a message to people without trying to get some of the recognition. I wish the Herald would fire you.

Coach S is a class act and deserved much better than what this franchise offered him. He will be a SB champion someday as either a HC or AC, he is a good coach and a great leader, players loved playing for him and that says a lot, thanks for everything Coach!

I've already come to my conclusion on Ireland.

Look back over his time here and one things becomes more apparent than all others.

He's not dedicated to Football and the Miami Dolphins. Don't get me wrong, they're up there on his priority list, but not the top like it should be.

Call me names, say what you want. To me, it's become plainly obvious that Ireland is dedicated to Ireland first and foremost. He's dedicated to his image and feeding his narcacisstic ego before all other things.

He's the type of guy that cannot admit to being wrong. Therefor, he's COMPLETELY unable to learn from his mistakes.

I liked Sparano and wish him well.

Too bad you couldn't take that weasel Ireland with. I won't miss either one of you. Having Ireland search for a coach and a QB in one year, makes no sense the man has no talent for selecting talent. So please Ross reconsider and send Ireland back out to the cow fields.

Tony is a class act ...like to see what could have been with a franchise qb .....you fans down there won't b satisfied no matter what can't even get ur butts to games n you live right there you'll be crying next yr n nxt n nxt
w

What about Tony Jr.?

By far the most quality coach miami has had since don shula. I have always supported Tony and I think I will have a little rooting intrest in wherever he goes. He didn't always do things the media and fans liked, he did what he thought was best, so what. I respect that. He made mistakes, who hasn't, who didn't and who won't? Good luck coach Sparano.

You are sooo FOS....you were better "friends" with Parcells, now, weren't you?

Nice guy but lets face it, too fricking stupid.

class act, blah blah blah. glad hes gone, guy was garbage. time for a real coach now. and sad that the idiot ireland stayed

No one with any REAL, established, winning experience as a head coach will want to work for Ross.

This hire will be Ross's first real chance to put his stamp on the team. Maybe he will try and be the first owner to hire a woman head coach. :P

I'll be home for christmas
No more field goals for me

I ran the ball, and took the fall
Now it's the end of me

I'll be home for christmas
So somebody punt me

Sparano never threw anyone under the bus? Cmon Armando, Benny Sapp might dispute that statement. Look, Sparano wasn't a bad guy, only wanted the best for the team, but truth be told, he was not a very good coach.
None of the teams he had ever had an identity. There was never a Miami Dolphins "Style" or "Brand" of football. Never a tempo that favored them...to quote Forrest Gump, you never knew what you were gonna get.
Classy statement, and I agree, well advised...Best of luck to Tony, I doubt we'll ever see him as a head coach again.

Tony took the high road so he would be employed again in the NFL. The truth be told he is at best a position coach and will never hold another HC job. He can not game plan during and before the game. Moreover he is a dinosuar trained by a dinosaur (Parcells). He has no reason to be angry, he had decision making power with personnel and still could not come up with an offensive line. Jake Long goes down and there was not any depth. He will get paid for next year pursuant to his contract. Tony take a trip to Europe with your wife and shut up.

Dolfans this is all you need to know: WE ARE DOOMED WITH STEPHEN ROSS AS OWNER. Know this. Know this.

100 percent correct. that guy will never be a head coach again just like cam cameron

Glad you guys are happy, We just lost the best Coach we've had since Jimmy Johnson. The problems start with the owner and will stay there. No coach that is any better than Tony will touch this garbage led team.

Lets see. The Dolphins will now be run by a idiot(Ross) and a cowardly weasel(Ireland). Oh yeah, can't you see the good times coming our way. LOL!

best coach since jonson, lol. well they were all pretty bad but wanny was the best of the worst. sparano was a moron. continue fist pumping after fgs instead of tds became insane when he kept doing it time after time failing in red zone. play to win, dont play to not lose

qbclub13, you are so right. These moron Dolphin fans don't have a clue as to what is the real problem .Stephen Ross! Don't worry Jeff(The Coward) Ireland is going to find you that franchise QB! Don't worry Dolfans Jeff (The Weasel) Ireland is going to fix everything! HAHAHAHA

I like Jack Del Rio

Hey why are you such a low life scum bag? Was the quote below by u necessary?

"He's boiling with venom toward Jeff Ireland and Stephen Ross, which he does not mention in his statement, but not showing any of that because, well, what is that going to accomplish?

Sparano never threw players under the bus even when they deserved it. He's not throwing the organization under the bus even though his family has been told they're no longer allowed around the Dolphins facility for any reason whatever."

If you are going to write write with class, the shots are not necessary and it's poor journalism. Reminds me of channel 7 in Miami.
The guy has lost a job like many unemployed Americans. Perhaps you need to join him on the unemployment line.

If you are going to write be sure to write with class and not make light of someones loosing his job. Tomorrow maybe your day.

Many of times I voiced my displeasure of Sporano as coach, but I will never make light of him loosing his job. Act with class and diginity and focus on some of the positives he has achieved. We tend to take great pleasure and kick a man when he's down and you took pride in doing so. A trophy for your brown- nosing.

Well, like them or not, Ross and Ireland are way past Sparano now and searching for their new Head Coach.I'm certain most of those big name Coaches agreed with the decision to fire Tony and his ill treatment, they are cynical, as $ is involved.

let the wrong person go...shoulda been that weasel jeff ireland. Ross does not appear to be very good at team ownership. Tony Sparano will come back to haunt the dolphins --they always do.

Coach Sparano was promoted to the level of his incompetence. He may have been a fine assistant and may be one again in the future. As a head coach...well to quote the Tuna, you are what your record says you are. In Sparano's case not very good.

P.S., why all the alligator tears and nashing of teeth now that he is gone? He's gonna get paid for next year and that sum will be more than most of us will see in a decade.

Why do they place these vermins in positions of influence in Miami and which later prove very difficult to exterminate?

cowher wont come here. gruden wont either. so its down to fischer or billick. billick is awful.

name the hc We fired that came back and
so called haunted Us?

ACCORDING TO DB YESTERDAYS FOOL, WE JUST FIRED THE HOTTEST COACHING PROSPECT IN THE NFL!

Great man and could have been a great coach if he would have been given the tools to work with. Hate to say it but we are in for one heck of a long haul before we find a coach worth his salt to take over this franchise as long as dumb and dumber are running it. Wish you the best Tony and I hope to see you on the sideline again soon. Now go and get a well deserved vacation on us.

(quote)He's not throwing the organization under the bus even though his family has been told they're no longer allowed around the Dolphins facility for any reason whatever.

Uh, he has just been FIRED. Why should they let his family use the facilities for anything. When you are fired, it is a parting of the ties.
BTW, why would his family be at the facilities now anyway? I hadn't realized that when we hired him he got his entire family too like Ted Ginn.

Hey Armando, if the paper fires you does that mean your family can't come in to use the facilities at the paper?
