So we're getting ready to head out to see Nikki Giovanni at the book fair, and my friend, in town visiting, is talking to her 9-year-old son on the phone before we leave.
"Connie and I are getting ready to go out. We're going to see a poet," she tells him.
"Emily Dickinson?" he asks.


Oh dear. He may already be dating those girls that Amy is so worried about.

You have to admit: It says something about the Portland, Maine, school system that a fourth grader can reference Emily Dickinson. Certain 9 year olds I know would have know idea who she was, unless of course she co-starred in the Transformers movie.
