Annie Proulx's Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories 3 isn't due out until early September, but New Yorker readers got a preview a few weeks ago of the devastating story Tits Up in a Ditch (it's one of the issues before the Obama terrorist fist bump cover that had the talking heads wringing their hands, because you know, who would've thought New Yorker would resort to satire on the cover?)
I won't spoil anything, but let me just say this has got to be one of the most depressing, heartbreaking stories I've ever read. It makes Proulx's Brokeback Mountain seem as light-hearted as Mamma Mia! At least Jack and Ennis had their time on the mountain! The main character in Tits Up...well. Life is hard for her, and it sure does not seem like it is ever going to get any better.

Cool on getting one of the FCC's 7 forbidden words (recounted in the late George Carlin's famed routine)in your blog.

Editor says that word is OK in Scrabble so it's OK with her. Yay!
