Pat Conroy, author of such bestselling novels as The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides, receives the 2nd Annual Lawrence A. Sanders Award for Fiction at 8 p.m. March 24 at Florida International University's Biscayne Bay campus.
The prize, awarded by FIU’s graduate program in creative writing, is given each year to a fiction writer whose work combines popular appeal and literary excellence and includes a cash prize of $5,000. The first recipient of the prize, supported by a grant from the Lawrence A. Sanders Foundation of Boca Raton, was legal thriller author Scott Turow.
The ceremony and a presentation by Conroy take place in the Wolfe University Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public, and afterward, there’s a reception and book signing.
The affable Conroy was one of the highlights of last fall’s Miami Book Fair International, where he told absolutely hilarious stories and talked about his latest work, the nonfiction book My Reading Life.
