Joe “I’m working my way (again) through John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee series, and have just gotten to #12, The Long Lavender Look. Travis McGee wrecks his car to avoid hitting a beautiful young woman and winds up charged with murder in a small town in the Everglades. Of course he has to clear his name, but because the local cops beat up his best friend, he also has to pretty much lay waste to the town. I rarely read thrillers while I’m writing, but I learn so much from MacDonald — he’s like a master class in pacing, character and plot surprises. And no one ever wrote Florida better.”
