Product Review: Geeking out over Knight Rider GPS by Mio

Who doesn't want the original voice of K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider giving you turn-by-turn directions?!? I can't help but love the Knight Rider GPS by Mio... even though it doesn't love me. You see, you can have it greet you with your name. Unless your name is Bridget. It has a ton of names, but not mine. I've listed the names it does have at the bottom of this post. Because I think having your name really makes this product worth the cost, so you better check if it has your name before buying it.

The map system has some cool features. It not only brings up icons when a restaurant, gas station, bank or hotel is nearby, but it also sometimes puts the icon of that company on the map, like McDonald's, Wendy's, Chevron or Hampton Inn. And you can set it to show the distance left to travel as well as the estimated time of arrival, which was pretty close to accurate at the start of my trips, give or take a minute.

But every time you enter in an address, you have to select USA and then Florida. That's a bit tedious. And I found a quirk every time I drove north on Interstate 95 from downtown Miami and had to get on the turnpike. Instead of it telling me where I needed to eventually go, it just kept saying keep right on I-95, and at the very last second it wanted me to get on the turnpike on the left-hand side, which didn't give me enough time to get over. The only way I would be prepared is if I looked at the turn-by-turn trip direction list ahead of time. But aside from that, I didn't have any other problems with directions.

I'm sympathetic to all this whining about "Bridget," which after all isn't even an American name. (Your parents stole it from a French girl. I hope this news does not upset you unduly.) But how can it not have a decent, patriotic name like Glenn? The voice is powered by a company called Navtones. they do real celebrity voices for GPS. If you like KITT I'm sure you will like the fact they have; Mr. T, Dennis Hopper, Gary Busey, Kim Cattrall, Burt Reynolds... I recomend you check it out, I'm pretty sure it's navtones.com

Now that's a pretty long list of names that KITT navigator can say. Speaking of KITT, this does bring back memories of one Michael Knight being saved by a car that can drive itself. Haha! Anyways, +1 to the people who're going to pick "Michael" as their name for that nav. LOL!
