Product Review: iPad is cool, but not worth the price (yet)

The true power of Apple's iPad has not been tapped yet.

For a change, I'll start with the bottom line: The iPad is really cool and has a lot of potential to change the way we think about computers. But the apps aren't advanced enough to make it worth spending $499 to own.

Overall, the iPad is best for consuming media, but not the best for doing heavy work on it. (Yet.)

So if you have the willpower to wait (cause we all want to be cool and show it off at the coffee shop), then wait.

If history has taught us anything with Apple, its new products are worth waiting for the second version. Wait for a better price. Wait for added features. Wait for more innovative and useful apps to be created.

But if you can't wait very long, at least wait for the 3G version coming out in late April. It'll cost an extra $130, but it gives you the option of having Internet access anywhere when you need it by using a 3G data subscription by AT&T that you can shut on and off. The data plans start at $14.99 a month.

Get the WiFi version if you have a portable way to access the Internet (like using the Palm Pre Plus or the MiFi as a mobile hotspot). Otherwise, you're not able to get what you want anywhere you want it -- and isn't that the whole reason we buy these portable devices?

For example, if you have an iPad in a car and need an emergency map, it's useless without an Internet connection.

A gadget like the iPad will be worth the money when the applications are great. Right now, only a few apps stand out.

The initial apps are -- for the most part -- created by developers who never got to touch the device before building the application. Now that it's in the hands of programmers, expect the creativity to start flying in the next few months.

When we read news or magazines through the iPad, we should be able to comb through every story without any effort, copy text to put in a search browser, share the story instantly on Facebook and be able to e-mail the author my thoughts. Advertisements are interactive and a finger can twirl product images 360 degrees.

Imagine an iPad that replaces paper. For students, a smart app could convert handwritten notes to text and grade math quizzes. Nurses or mechanics could pull up data quickly about the current patient.

Imagine an iPad that changes how we play games -- using 10 fingers to interact with objects, instead of a mouse and a keyboard.

It's OK that we're not there yet. But here is a glance at some of the more popular iPad apps, and some I feel are innovative and highly usable.

Books and comic books: Reading books is pretty nice, but it's kind of heavy at 1.5 pounds. You'll be propping this up on a stand or against your legs on the couch for long reading sessions.

In Apple's iBooks store (a free app), books range from $9.99 to $12.99. It has cool detailed animation while flipping pages, and you can highlight text for notes, copy it, or do a Google or Wikipedia word search.

If you use the Kindle iPad app (free), you can access all the digital books on Amazon. It syncs books you've already purchased, and syncs the last page you read throughout all your devices. If you've read a chapter on your iPhone, the iPad will know that the next time you use it, and vice versa. Flipping pages doesn't look as neat as on iBooks, and it can't copy text.

In the Marvel Comics app (free), there are a few comic books you can read for free, like a Spider-Man issue from 1999 and the Hulk from 2008. But other digital comics cost $1.99 each. The comics read beautifully -- and it stays sharp when you zoom in. The IDW Comics app (free) has a handful of free issues along with ones that cost $1.99 each with titles like Star Trek, G.I. Joe and Transformers. On both Marvel and IDW, you can view the comics you've purchased on other devices.

News and magazines: The app for USA TODAY (free) is the best news one I've seen. I love how it loads every story at once, so I flick through them like I would photos. It makes it so fast and easy to digest all the news of the day. NYT Editors' Choice (free) feels too much like a website: once I open a story, I have to click back to get to more stories on the main page.

Popular Science's app ($4.99) is on the right track to presenting media beyond a PDF of the page. You can flick upwards and sideways to go through stories, and products are highlighted in an aesthetically pleasing way.

But I'd like to see all these take it to the next step. I want to be able to highlight and copy text, click links to learn more, and have videos integrated with a story.

Sports: Sports seems to be a buggy bunch. The MLB At Bat 2010 ($14.99) has many complaints written by iTunes users, mostly expressing disappointment with bugs, a lack of news and standings, and how it feels wrong to purchase it at full price again when a user already owns the iPhone version or has a MLB.TV subscription. (And I agree.) ESPN's ScoreCenter XL ($4.99) is a sports news app that just released an update today to address crashes, and reviews are mixed. NBA Game Time Courtside (free) shows stats and scores for the upcoming 2010 playoffs.

Tools: Star Walk ($4.99) is mega cool for backyard stargazing. Point it to the sky to see a map of constellations over your head, and learn more about them. Bento ($4.99) is a huge organizer, with the idea that you'll file reminders and notes about contacts, projects, recipes and expense reports on the go. It's a cool concept, but it's probably more useful on an iPhone as it stands today.

Kids: I love what Disney did with its digital books Toy Story Read-Along (free) and Toy Story 2 Read-Along ($8.99). It's beyond just putting a virtual book in the iBooks store. This interactive storybook reads along with you, and lets you finger paint on the pages (but I wish it had a fill tool and zoom ability for coloring).

Dora the Explorer Coloring Adventures! ($4.99) makes good use of the iPad's features. It's a coloring book that talks, and you create your own scenes by putting movable characters anywhere on the screen -- like a digital Colorforms. Dora talks while you color, and when you leave the app, it remembers what you last worked on.

Games: The Top Gun ($4.99) app makes use of the motion sensor by having users steer the iPad to fly and avoid the "Danger Zone" areas in the sky. The Labyrinth 2 HD game (Lite version free, or full for $7.99) also takes motion games to a higher level with its don't-let-the-ball-drop-in-the-hole maze game.

But I'm more impressed with games that have you use both hands in a touch screen, like Diner Dash: Grilling Green ($4.99).

There is a lock screen switch on the ipad thats how good you reviewed the product.

I still can't believe there's no camera- let alone no front facing camera- duh?! Will there be an iPad 2.0 by Xmas or will we really have to wait a whole year?

Luis -

Indeed you did catch a statement in my video I now take back -- the mention in the video about screen flippage while moving around.

Since I had to borrow the iPad to review it, I only got to spend a short time with it and overlooked the usefulness of the screen lock switch on the side.

So if you want to move around to read, just flip the screen lock (which is similar to the mute switch on the iPhone), and it won't change orientation.

But hey, that's being human. Some people forget about a lock switch. Other people forget their prototype iPhone 4 on a bar stool. (Bazinga.)

Well it was certainly too heavy and awkward to hold it up and take photos like you do on a cellphone. But a camera on the front would be real cool for doing video conferencing.

But when Apple is trying to make this as light as possible, I have a feeling they won't want to include a camera. Leave the photos to the cellphone.
