Lou Dobbs versus ... Rick Sanchez?

Things didn't work out for him very well at MSNBC, and his Miami talk show got beaten in the ratings by Japanese monster cartoons. But Rick Sanchez is quietly becoming an important presence at CNN. On Sunday night, he even went one-on-one with resident immigration ranter Lou Dobbs on CNN Newsroom With Rick Sanchez. If you didn't see it, you missed some good television. Without throwing any shoes at each other Dobbs and Sanchez really squared off. Sanchez started things off by saying, politely but steelily, that Dobbs' immigration rants have an ethnic edge to them. "I feel sometimes like I'm not valued after I watch one of your newscasts," he said.

"When Hispanics define themselves in terms of illegal immigration, which is what I hear you doing," Dobbs replied, "that's troubling."

"I'll tell you how I'm defining myself," Sanchez retorted. "I'm defining myself as the son of Paco and Adella,  who came to this country as refugees, who came to this country as immigrants and to this day don't speak a lick of English but their son does.  And you know why they don't speak a lick of English, because they worked three, four different jobs, they worked until 9, 10:00 at night just to be able to get home and they used to say to us, 'It's too late for us to make it in this country but we're going to be darned well sure you guys get a good education me and my brothers, and you do make it somehow, and you will speak English.'"

There was a good deal more, and I'll see if I can get a video link from CNN. I think we'll be hearing more from Sanchez.

For once, Rick Sanchez impressed me and didn't annoy me enough to change the channel on him as I usually do! I thought he'd be kissing Lou Dobbs's ass as most CNN-ers do, but he stood up to him and made me almost proud that we once had him down here. Almost proud. He still bugs the hell out of me, but kudos to him for that one!

Lance

Yep, first good thing the guy's done, that I can tell. (Ok, I do miss him standing on the map.)

I wish more journalists would challenge the barely-veiled animus that seems to drive much of the deport the illegals/build a wall crowd.

Rich Sanchez is a failure. Just listen to him on the O'Reilly matter. Listen to the tape, Mr. Sanchez and then report. No more CNN for me.

Sensationist

What a sorry attempt to get himself some ratings. Illegal immigrants come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. I think its appalling that he would stoop to try to make illegal immigration a race issue and tarnish the names of good Hispanic people by trying to tie them to this issue. Shame on you Mr. Sanchez, find someone else's backs to stand on to make your career.

Rick is probably itching to start the Cuba reports like he used to do here in Miami when he was on FOX. He is TYPICAL, rightwinged, mob mentality that hijacked Miami years ago. He will never get it. The majority of these Miami rightwingers feel that they can “CUBANIZE” the rest of the country and Rick I am sure cannot believe that the rest of America is not buying the lies.
Everytime I look at Rick or just remember him, I say it is time to repeal the Cuban Adjustment Act. Cubans fleeing Cuba are no different than the Mexicans, Guatemalens, Haitians, etc.. fleeing their countries for ECONOMIC reasons, not for fear of Castro persecuting them!

Good job Rick!!

Rick Sanchez is a jerk his paco and adela story makes me want to puke.He is used to breaking laws just like he did in Miami when he ran over a person while he was drunk and the aftermath led to the individuals death.

Andrea Hawkins

LOve Sanchez!!!!

betty cohker

WE need to hear and see more of Rick Sanchez. Where is he?????

Angie Rowen

I saw Rick on CNN last night. He did a great interview from Philadelphia.I wish he were an anchor on CNN.

Sick of Rick

I can't believe he killed a guy (while under the influence(DUI)and is representing CNN?
Makes me wonder what to think of our world news network.. as he was famous for being the figurehead for Florida's "yellow journalism" on local T.V. here in South Fla. CNN get rid of him ....he has a bad reputation down here and it will spread .

Amber Smith

I don't care what other people think. I love this guy, maybe people are just mad to see that minority, is getting somewhere, Im married to a man that thanks to his parents that immigrated here years ago, he is a very important doctor where we live. Maybe people should stop hating other people and get a real life.

Marg Tressa

I would listen to CNN news all of the time if Rick Sanchez could be an anchor. He is absolutely wonderful-and sooooooo handsome.

Annie Poren

Rick Sanchez is a blossoming reporter-best journalist I know.People who criticize him are obviously jealous and totally uneducated.

JOhn Anderson

Rick Sanchez is the best journalist on TV.He is the main reason I keep looking at CNN. I keep hoping I can see him daily.

Jane Moore

I agree with you. He is awesome!!!and so intelligent.

I cannot stand Sanchez - but you have the facts wrong - he was coming out of a Miami Dolphins football game at Pro Player Stadium and was drunk and hit somebody while driving and if I recall it was a 17 y/o boy. I don't think the boy died - but was/is permanently disabled (unless he did die and I don't know about it - but that's doubtful).

Sanchez gave WSVN Channel 7 news the smutty look it has about itself - racy, sensational and attention grabbing in the 90s. He ended up pretty much not well liked in Miami after that, went to NJ to MSNBC and eventual mutual unhappiness there, and now with CNN. The poster who said Sanchez was breaking laws - is right on - thinking he was above the law/his best friend was San Pedro, and when San Pedro was interrogated/investigated by the courts is when Sanchez went to Cuba to do his 3-week piece on Cuba's culture and his grandparents, so that he wasn't called to his friend's trial and wouldn't have to testify against him. Corruption and hypocrisy is what fueled him here in Florida.

Oh, his parents have been here for 50+ years and still don't speak English or didn't bother learning English and his reasoning for that is extremely lame....because they worked 2, 3, 4 jobs? No, because they lived in Hialeah where NOBODY speaks English...it was a CHOICE to NOT be forced to learn English....You don't try to speak and learn our language - you shouldn't reap the benefits. The French hate us if we go to France and don't try to speak their language for example-and they are not the only ones. No, I don't want the Star Spangled Banner sang in another language besides English, gracias, merci beaucoup, danke, Shalom.

I am American born and my parent' are Cuban immigrants. I am always surprised by the hatred of the "Miami Natives" towards Cubans. My parent's worked hard and never took a penny from the government. Yes, Rick Sanchez is a product of the "Cubanized Miami". Whether you agree with him or not he is a success story. Cubans have helped Miami make it what it is today. A great city. We are proud to be Americans and yet we do not forget where we came from.

Candida Muro

Wow...to the people who are so angered by illegal immigration and angered by people who don't speak English: English wasn't the first language spoken here--Native Americans were here first and you know the rest. Native Americans were forced off their land and forced to change their religion and forced to farm instead of hunt, ect. ect. Those European immigrants who came in the 1600's are the reason English is the main language spoken here. In most other countries people know three or more languages.

Rick Sanchez is my new favorite guy.
