No network in television history has had its priorities more bass-ackwards than ESPN, which produces the best promos and the worst programming in sports TV today. Watching a game on ESPN, whether staffed by the ABC programming shills of Monday Night Football or the idiotic college-basketball blabbermouth Dick Vitale, is a nearly unbearable experience. But the promos, often featuring famous players and coaches, are usually hilarious.
The best one yet debuts on Sept. 29, showing SportsCenter anchor John Anderson in a conference with his new "ghost writer" -- Stephen King. King's copy is pretty good, Anderson says, but cautions: "I know Boston beat New York last night, but I think it was more because of the Red Sox clutch hitting than New York's lineup being possessed by the demon. Oh, and no players with telekinetic powers, please."
