I've been fighting off the temptation to mention the nosediving ratings of Piers Morgan's new show on CNN. But I surrendered this afternoon when the Nielsen folks revealed that Morgan dropped below half a million viewers Thursday night even with a bunch of crazed half-naked Kardashians sitting at the desk with him. Really. You can't break the half-million mark with Hollywood's most beloved trollops bragging about their boobs? (The scoop from Kim: "They're 100 percent real!" Kourtney, not so much.) And their sex tapes? (Poor Kim says she's embarrassed by hers, though not embarrassed enough to stop talking about it on national televison, though I guess you could argue that 498,000 viewers qualifies as a "national audience" only in someplace like the Togolese Republic, which may be where Piers Morgan is doing his next show.)
Talking about ratings in the first couple of weeks of a talk show is usually unfair; it takes a new one time to build an audience. But in Morgan's case, he's losing an audience. His show debuted on January 17 with 2.1 million viewers tuning in to see him chat up Oprah Winfrey. They were so impressed that almost half of them didn't return for day two.
Since then, Morgan's ratings fell every day except for a small upward blip last Tuesday when Rudy Giuliani was the guest. By the time the Kardashians had finished hyperventilating Thursday night, Morgan had lost more than three-quarters of the viewers he started with last week.
(Hey, you wanna know who's really enjoying reading this? Larry King. In its final six months, his show was averaging 613,000 viewers, was low enough to get him kicked off the air after 50 years in broadcasting. But it's about 20 percent bigger than Morgan's audience Thursday night.)
CNN, by the way, announced Friday that it has a new "managing editor," former Newsweek editor and NBC Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker. His assignment, the network said, is "to create a more powerful and distinctive dialogue about the top news stories of the day." At the rate CNN is shedding viewers, though, the dialogue's going to have to be between cameramen and stagehands.

Time for CNN to pack it in. We have better things to watch !!!!!!!

What a S**t! Did he actually think he could come in a knock Fox out of the box. What an arrogant little piece of a** dropping!!!

I do not own a television for most of the reasons mentioned above.
Posted by: Terri | January 29, 2011 at 05:09 PM
By the way, I have hundreds of cable channels with Time Warner and I have no freaking idea where CNN and HLN are. Does MSBNC still take up a cable number or are they finally in the toilet where they belong?

Some of you people are amazing. If you dislike CNN so much why bother? It's obvious you watch CNN enough to know what's going on. If you like FOX News better then by all means go watch all the time. Nobody is stopping you. To act like children and pistol whip CNN doesn't say much for you as individuals. If this article was about your opinion or feelings about CNN then have at it. Until then start acting like the adults you're supposed to be and not like the children you appear to be.

Are there no native born Americans who can give lousy interviews and get worse ratings? Even Pauly Shore would bring more to the table then Piers does. Didn't the U.S. send these Brits back home one before 1776? CNN has rocks for brains. OOppps did I insult rocks?
Posted by: Doug | January 29, 2011 at 05:42 PM
Can you imagine the planning meeting at CNN when some overpaid executive suggested Piers for the job? "How much will it cost to get Piers?" What an absolute joke. Newsflash: no one is watching. CNN is a joke.
Posted by: Jerry Kemper | January 29, 2011 at 05:43 PM
Well it seems as sleaze has finally run it's course with the viewing audience. I mean how many times can you see low life, half dressed common trash paraded on TV before it eventually becomes passe'?
Could it be that the American audience is now demanding "SUBSTANCE" in TV broadcasting?
In the words of Jerry Springer, "naw!"

I'm not sure that FOX News is where everyone is going. Last week MTV's Jersey Shore had 4 times as many viewers as the highest rated show on FOX. FOX beats CNN because there are a lot of angry rednecks who want to be preached at, but they still only have a tiny fraction of the audience.
Posted by: Berryricious | January 29, 2011 at 05:53 PM
I dropped following him on twitter because of his inane bragging about how great he was... and that was the day after the Oprah interview... Larry was always watchable, problem was other networks became more watchable... Piers not watchable at all... won't ever watch, no value in it...
Posted by: Dan Cummings | January 29, 2011 at 05:57 PM
cnn has anderson cooper who is already known by the cnn audience and is more than capable to handle a talk show at 9 pm and his news show at 10....
piers morgan reminds me of the bp pres who wanted his life back after 14 men died on the rig....
he is a slimy type and does not radiate ease like anderson does...
after spitzer, the animal, was hired by cnn, i knew that whoever was running cnn needs to resign or the board should fire him asap.....
dump morgan now and put anderson cooper on at 9 for talk and news at 10.....or cnn, you are done...take this from a long time king viewer....

What CNN needs is to get Jon Stewart to come over from Comedy Central and tell it like it is.
Posted by: Shel | January 29, 2011 at 05:57 PM
Thanks, Bert Dog, first HONEST guy response I've seen re the Kardashian girls. Please, fat ugly b***ches??? Cows? Who are you guys kidding? You know you wouldn't kick either one of 'em out of bed for eating crackers! Sure, they're Slutty with a Capital S. But they're also HOT, in a very white trash sort of way. I'd bang either Kim or Kourtney like a screen door in a hurricane.
(Note this offer does NOT apply to Khloe, thankfully not pictured in the article. Now that is one FAT, UGLY B***H!)

I think Piers messed it up for himself as the butthead judge on America's Got Talent.
So naturally, most views didn't like him in the first place. So, here he is on CNN in prime time. Go figure?? There are a lot more qualified people around than Piers. I hope his program is short lived and they get someone like Jay Mahr, D. L. Hugley, Doctor OZ, Dick Gregory, Hota or Kathey-Lee to name a few.
I think it is just a matter of time for Piers being on at the 9 p.m. spot.
Posted by: Ed Hartwell | January 29, 2011 at 06:06 PM
I remember a quote by Piers when CNN announced he was replacing King. It's not a direct quote but it went something to the effect that I'll take FOX down. You better hurry Piers I have a feeling with rating like this you won't be around very long.
Posted by: Wilder Napalm | January 29, 2011 at 06:10 PM
Who watches any program on cnn? They are a joke.
Posted by: Mark | January 29, 2011 at 06:13 PM
Morgan clearly hates women. I couldn't believe the evil questions he asked these women who were good enough to be on his crap show. My favorite moment was the time he said he was Catholic and believed in heaven. What a mental midget. It has everything to do with his fear of women. You blew it, CNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Athina | January 29, 2011 at 06:18 PM
I was soooo bored until I happened upon this article. Iy reminded me that I have Kim and Ray-J's sex tape on my hard drive. Mmm..Oh, good girl, ROCK IT!
ah, that's better...

I PUT THE CRYPT KEEPER LARRY KING (NO MEANESS HE DOES LOOK LIKE HIM) IN THAT CATEGORY. TO BE HONEST MOST OF AMERICA DOES NOT WATCH CNN ANY MORE NOR HSN NOR MSNBC. THEY GET THERE MOST VIEWS IN DOCTORS OFFICES BECAUSE THEY CONTROL THE REMOTE. LOL

Isn't he doing better than Coop Anderson? And, getting your butt kicked by Madcow is no easy task as well!

Oh puh-lease!!! The Kardashians!??? MOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Posted by: ghost | January 29, 2011 at 07:14 PM
What do you expect from a liberal mouthpiece such as CNN. They are not any better than the liberals in Washington and many states who can't govern properly. Why is anyone still watching CNN and HLN? They are trying to make a deal with another loser news reporting system -- CBS. That would be the kiss of death. Remember the old adage that two half-wits do not make a whole.
Posted by: greenrock76 | January 29, 2011 at 07:17 PM
Hey, they took my comment off!! Was it calling Rachael "Madcow?" Or, was it calling Anderson Cooper "Coop?" Last ratings I saw on Coop were under Piers.
As long as odd names will get you kicked off, what about Wolf "man" Blitzer?
Posted by: Faux News Junkie | January 29, 2011 at 07:21 PM
Huh? CNN is still around? I thought they folded years ago right after Ted and Jane called it quits and split. Have to check it out right before I euthanize myself.
Posted by: Spongebob Obama | January 29, 2011 at 07:24 PM
Can't seem to get a comment to stick.
Worked with a lot of Brits at large multinational. PITA stubborn and the accent replaces common sense.
Joey Bott-a-bing knows Kim. Piers? I'm thinking no-way.
Posted by: Faux News Junkie | January 29, 2011 at 07:31 PM
After seeing what an id10t Piers was on AGT, did anyone really think he would ever achieve any kind of ratings in the US on his own?
Posted by: hudstim | January 29, 2011 at 07:31 PM
Seriously, you people think these girls look fat?? What world are you living in?

Who's Piers Morgan?
Posted by: Steve | January 29, 2011 at 08:05 PM
I agree completely. The people have the say here..if we're not going to watch it, there goes his ratings and views! CNN needs to get off the air and stop wasting space.

There is a clear and direct relationship between CNN's move to being very liberal and allowing that political view to taint its news coverage and its hefty loss of viewers.
Perhaps now Ted Turner will start to understand that a constant diet of left wing slants on the news and large amounts of talking up the Arabs is not what people actually want to watch, which is why they've all gone to Fox.
Posted by: Mr Angry | January 29, 2011 at 08:23 PM
Because of the Kardasians is the reason no one looked at Pier's program They are three worthless individuals.
Posted by: Mojoron | January 29, 2011 at 08:30 PM
Maybe CNN should poach someone from Fox News. They seem to have ratings....
Posted by: Ghostrunner | January 29, 2011 at 08:30 PM
I think the K girls are pretty hot. But I have a problem in that I find women in general attractive.
Posted by: h2k | January 29, 2011 at 08:31 PM
Tuned into the Piers M. show; just to sample, and it's awful. No wonder it has 0 ratings; people know what is interesting, and this is NOT.
Posted by: whitney | January 29, 2011 at 08:34 PM
Can someone please tell me what the hell is a Kardashian? Should I concern myself w/ who they are? That's what I thought.
Posted by: Edge | January 29, 2011 at 08:37 PM
Interestingly, no one has mentioned that this show is no longer live! Howard Stern was interviewed the day before...and then 2+ hours of video was edited down.
So the bozo Piers - who would interrupt Jesus on Judgement Day - ends up saying "next segment we'll talk to Howard about "something"...and when the show resumed...that "something" would never be mentioned.
My wife and I will NOT be tuning in again.
Posted by: Rich Muller | January 29, 2011 at 08:50 PM
Piers Morgan is repulsive as an interviewer. A lot of capital was spent on guests to start the show, but he blew the interviews badly. Piers has an abrasive repulsive personality and already has run through the best guests. I know I can't watch the program - I tried.

Obviously no one is watching the program for Pier's Wit. He has none.
As to the women, well as they say:
"If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS."
This is exactly what this low talent individual has done. Of course at CNN this is considered high level journalism.
Go figure.

I really can not believe that CNN/Morgan or Couric or any other prime time professional journalist would put themselves so LOW as to interview these trashy human beings. Enough is enough! I think professional journalism is at a very low point. There are so many women in US or world who deserve a spot in prime time TV for what they bring into the society and the message they send. And you get these degrading women who do not enjoin any respect out there from any decent human beings. Every interview of Kim is about her sex tape like she invented something. It is like telling young women "You see you can make a sex tape and make millions and be in prime time shows" Not bad at all!! It is so pathetic. With that said I was so happy to see the ratings low. That should teach these journalists a good lesson to learn form. That sex might sell to the uneducated people (unfortunately we have many of them) but not to an intelligent audience.
Posted by: Dea | January 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM
Commie News Network is a complete joke. I wouldn't watch it if you paid me to. Flush 'em and put them out of their misery.
Posted by: Joe Biteme | January 29, 2011 at 09:32 PM
CNN and gutter British journalism. Hmmm i guess they'll do anything to wipe out any real American sentiment away in favor of the "elite global agenda".
All this globalism crud is just a waste of regular folks time.
Posted by: Bettyg | January 29, 2011 at 09:33 PM
Is anyone really surprised. Nobody watches this worthless new channel anyway.
Posted by: Mike | January 29, 2011 at 09:36 PM
Why all the surprise?
This network's ratings have been in the toilet for years.
And why wouldn't they be?
Aside from hires like this guy, this is a network who's chief "journalist" came in dead last on an episode of "Jeopardy" last year, losing to a comedian and a semi-retired TV actress.
This is the crew who proudly touted Rick Sanchez as one of their best, then abruptly fired him.
These are the people who tripped over themselves in their rush to tell us about the "terrorist boat attack" on the Potomac River.
If it weren't for the fact that folks are forced to watch them in any Bank of America branch you happen to find yourself (I switched banks to voice my displeasure - get a clue, BA), they'd have the same audience share as some of the local-yokel networks in my hometown.
What's really funny, though, is to watch the delusion of this Left-wing propaganda machine in seriously believing that they can salvage this failed enterprise.
