Seems that some feline fanciers are getting bored with the same-old same-old (though it seems to be there are about 70 basic breeds of cat already available). Now, a woman is breeding what she calls the Toyger: an orange/black cat with roundish ears that looks like a tiny tiger and will cost an astounding $4,000. Click here for the LIFE magazine cover story about the new breed.
Now, anyone who has read this blog for any length of time knows I'm not wild about the idea of paying big bucks for pets when millions of homeless animals languish in shelters every day. In South Florida, there are so many surplus cats that most who enter the county shelters are euthanized. Why is it so important that a cat look like a tiger (or that a dog have a pedigree)? You want to spend $4,000 on a pet? My advice is donate that kind of money to a rescue organization or shelter. Spend it on dozens of pets that need homes.
