MDFR CREW SAVES DOG FROM DROWNING

 

At vet's office, paramedic is reunited with dog she saved 10 years ago.

 

(MIAMI, November 3, 2009) - At approximately 12:20 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) responded to a request for assistance by Indian Creek police to help rescue two dogs that were struggling to stay afloat in the water. The incident occurred in a residential area on the 1300 block of NE 100 Street.

The Miami Shores rescue unit arrived and noticed that though one of the dogs was safe and out of the water, the other dog was nearly drowning. Just then, an Indian Creek police officer snatched the dog out of the water and handed him to the paramedics. An examination the American Staffordshire Terrier revealed that he sustained injuries to all his paws resulting from his frantic efforts to climb a seawall to safety. The rescue crew administered oxygen to the dog via a specially designed pet oxygen mask and did all they could to stabilize the canine.

 Though the dog was unconscious when pulled out of the water, he was awake by the time he arrived at Adam's Veterinary Clinic.  According to Dr. Fusco, the next two days will determine Shorty's outcome. Shorty was the temporary name given by the rescue crew since he was rescued near shore.

 Coincidentally, as the crew transferred Shorty to the clinic staff, a German Shepherd arrived for his shots. But this was no ordinary German Shepherd; One of the paramedics, Captain Bruder, treated him from traumatic injuries 10 years ago and had brought him to the same clinic.

Captain Bruder was overjoyed to see the dog she treated so long ago was doing so well.
