....to Hollywood's leaders about their vote barring dogs on the broadwalk. I was clearing out old emails and found this:
Dear Dogs on the Broadwalk supporters, Unfortunately yesterday’s commissioner meeting to allow dogs on the Hollywood boardwalk did
not go in our favor. The vote was 2 in favor & five against. Many of us felt
very disappointed as they acknowledged the fact that they received hundreds of
emails in support and a ratio of 1 to 4 in favor, however this had no effect in
the decision of those who voted against it, including Mayor Bober. A presentation was done from research on other
towns in Florida which allowed dogs on their boardwalks; even though those towns have been successful,
the sentiment was this would not work in Hollywood because there is simply too
much activity in our broadwalk. There was also concern about defecation & in
our view the description of the possible incidents was exaggerated and
unrealistic. Why not see the potential of thousands of responsible dog owners
who are ready to dine & wine at the broadwalk & find solutions to the
few that have concerns? I received about 50 emails this morning & several calls from people
who were extremely angry because nobody was allowed to speak. The sentiment is
that Commissioners should have listened to tax payers & a trial period
should have been granted. I personally feel that yes! too
much activity goes on at the Hollywood Broadwalk, but in my view it is the wrong
activity, regularly attracting hundreds of people who parade up & down the
broadwalk without any disposable income
& trash the place without any regard for the law. I strongly feel that this would have been a
great opportunity to try to change the demographic of people who come to the
broadwalk; we are a group of highly educated responsible dog owners, with
disposable income, who can bring a higher level of culture & sophistication
to a town that has great potential but that struggles to be progressive &
flourish. Based on the hundreds of
emails that were received, people are gravitating towards towns were dogs are
welcome. Gulfstream, Ft. Lauderdale & Lincohn Road restaurants are reeking
on the economic benefits & they are catering to dog owners with water bowls
& dog treats . I hope that one day, we have another shot to voice our opinion & be
heard. In the mean time I want to thank you for the 400+ emails that were sent.
I was extremely impressed with the level
of passion that some of you wrote. Commissioner Patty Asseff also sends a message
of appreciation for your support. Sincerely, Helena Drori Dog Beach of Hollywood
