October is Adopt a Dog Month. So go adopt a dog!

What Can an Adopted Dog Bring to Your Life? Find Out During American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month® This October

Your Local Animal Shelter Has Dogs of Every Type, Size, Age and Personality Waiting for Loving Homes

DENVER, Sept. 30, 2010 – American Humane Association, the nation’s voice for the protection of children and animals, is asking prospective pet owners What can an adopted dog bring to your life? in celebration of American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month® this October. Adopt-A-Dog Month is a nationally recognized event that encourages people to help reduce pet overpopulation by adopting their next canine companion from an animal shelter or breed-rescue group.

“Adopt-A-Dog Month is a strong reminder of the urgent need to find homes for millions of homeless pets across America,” said Dori Villalon, vice president of Animal Protection for American Humane Association. “This year we are asking: What can an adopted dog bring to your life? There are so many responses to that question — a best friend, an exercise buddy, a companion for an aging parent. An adopted dog can be all of these things — and so much more.”

You may be the perfect dog owner if you:

·         Believe caring for a dog for 15 years does not seem like a lifetime.

·         Look forward to big, wet kisses when you come home each day.

  • Don’t mind sharing your house with someone who sheds, tracks dirt occasionally and possibly drools.
  • Want to take care of another living creature every day.
  • Would love a playmate who likes to chase balls and take you on walks.
  • Are happy to spend your extra money on pet food, toys, veterinary care, chew bones — and more chew bones.
  • Want someone to adore you even on a bad-hair day.
  • Believe that spaying and neutering pets is vital to solving the pet-overpopulation problem.
  • Can’t imagine leaving your devoted pet behind if you move.
  • Enjoy unconditional love and constant companionship.

What a great event. Adopting really is one of those things wherein the more you give, the more you get—not just the unconditional love (as if you needed more), but all kinds of life lessons. From a dog you will learn acceptance and gratitude; in caring for her you will learn patience and forbearance. And it's all wrapped up in the thrill of discovery, of locking eyes in that little shelter room and knowing that yes, this is the one. Just magical.
