A Home for the Holidays (and beyond)
It's really scary how many critters are suffering because of the economic crisis. More than ever, those who can should try to step in and rescue the dogs and cats being abandoned - or relinquished by anguished owners who can't support them anymore (or attend to them because of family situations). Here are a few:
LUCKY, a 7-year-old Golden Retriever. 305-885-9160..
Golden Retriever Rescue is interviewing prospective ‘parents.' He gets along with other dogs and is excellent with kids. The owners don't have time for him since they are hardly home, have a toddler and another baby on the way. His vitals: Born: November 2001; not neutered. All his shots are up to date, the next vaccines/shots are due August 2009. His rabies shot is due in April. He is in good health. Medical records provided upon request. Call

It has become necessary for me to leave the house in which I live. I have 3 sons of the four legged variety which truly are very precious to me. Giving them up is going to take an emotional toll on me which only a dog or pet lover will understand. But I have been unable to find a new place to live that will allow me to keep two Great Danes and a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. I am asking if there is anyone out there that is either willing to foster my dogs until I am able to find a living solution I can afford or if you may know of anyone else that is reliable to do the same.
SPENCER is with Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida - a big hunk o' chocolate love. He's neutered, 8 years old. He is easygoing and happy, which wasn't always the case. Spencer was found lying on the side of a deserted road by a good Samaritan over a year ago. He could hardly stand, his eyes and ears were swollen shut from infections and he had very little hair. Today, after a year of good food (he has a restricted diet - no wheats and flours) and lots of moderate exercise (he loves to swim and fetch squeaky balls), Spencer is one of our greatest rescues - he seems truly thankful to be alive! He is very polite and well mannered, loves everybody. He's in Pompano Beach.
LRRofFla offers 24PetWatch microchips, which include free registration into the 24PetWatch pet recovery service. He comes with 30 days of pre-paid ShelterCare pet health insurance. Click here for contact info.
CLEO needs to go home to her anxious family for the holidays-- she's lost, and last seen in Miami's Upper East Side neighborhood of Belle Meade.
She's an adult mixed breed and had been run over before she was rescued. As a result of the accident, she had a permanent scar on her back that prevented fur from growing there and is black and pink in color. Otherwise, her coat was short hair of a reddish brown color. She has pointed ears and weighs about 30 pounds. She looks like the typical street dog you see running around. She dug out of the yard at approximately 8 AM on Wednesday, December 17th, and was last seen at the corner of Biscayne Boulevard and NE 72nd Terrace. She was wearing a pink collar with 3 tags – including her County tag and a tag with our address and phone number. She was also wearing a flea/tick collar. Unfortunately, Cleo is very skittish and will generally run away from anyone who approaches her. When cornered or frightened, she may bite. Call (305) 757-0847 or (305) 495-5441 if you've seen her.

Lenny Needs a Home
Isn't he magnificent? A purebred Lab from Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida. Here's the deal:
Looking for tall, dark and handsome? Well, here I am, my name is Lenny and I am a beautiful one year old black Lab. I was at the shelter hoping that someone would take me home, but we big black dogs tend to get passed by. Lucky for me Lab Rescue came and saved me from a sad ending. Now I am in a nice foster home, learning all about living the good life. I am crate trained, almost fully potty trained and learning
that dog toys are okay and socks and stuffed animals are not okay. I admit I like to pick things up, but I have not chewed or damaged anything. I am good about staying off the furniture, but sometimes I
would like to climb into your lap and give you a hug. I am a big boy, so being a lap dog is not my future. I weigh between 75 and 80 pounds and I have not completely filled out yet. I get along fine with other dogs and older kids, but because of my size and youth, I should not go to a home with small children. There are no cats here, but I expect that they would be fun to chase. I enjoy car rides and walks and I am good on the leash. I have a small white patch on my chest, which Lab lovers often refer to as a star, and I guess it makes me feel like the sheriff when I am out in the back yard. I love to explore the yard and will alert you if there are any suspicious characters outside the fence. My foster dad tells me that if someone will spend some time giving me obedience training I will likely mature into a big loving teddy bear. Would you have some time for me? I would love to hear from you......so please come visit.
If you are interested in meeting or adopting Lenny or one of our other labs please contact Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida by visiting our website http://labradorrescue.net/ or call 1-866-464-LABS. LRRoF has all our labs microchipped, spayed or neutered, up-to-date on shots and each adoption comes with a 30 day pre-paid pet health insurance plan. All applicants will have a home inspection and vet reference (if applicable).

Doggies Need Homes
This is so sad. Lulu's human mommy died, and Lulu has been boarded at Hollywood Animal Hospital for the past two weeks. Her son, Doug Lee, will be taking Lulu to Broward County Humane Society in a day or two if a home for her is not found. Please take a look at her picture - she is a 50 lb yellow lab/greyhound mix, spayed female about age 5 or 6. She is a lovable and good natured dog. If you can find some room in your heart and your home please call Doug Lee. Doug Lee can be contacted via his cell phone at 707-599-6093, or by e-mail at douglee57@suddenlink.net.
Sandy also needs a loving family. This lovable poodle was found in the Miami Springs area in early October. She is great with kids and cats, but doesn't care much for other dogs. She is housebroken and needs to find her family or a new home. Contact: 305.790.5559. Email- jarmstrong@continentalts.com.

Jarvis Needs a VERY Special Home
You can't imagine what this poor guy has been through. He was used as bait in a dog-fighting operation and as you can see, he lost an eye. Words can't express the bad things that should happen to people who cause this kind of travesty. Grateful Paws Rescue saved him, but he needs a home. Here's what I got from the rescuers:
"These stories are never good. He was not abandoned by someone who was foreclosed on. He was not surrendered when someone passed. He was not cast off because he no longer matched the sofa or left behind when someone moved. Jarvis was a 'BAIT DOG'. But trust me when I say, those days are over. He is gentle and sweet and is still a bit confused at the attention he is getting, but in another week or so, will settle in and those of us who saw him initially, won't recognize him as the same dog. (And remember, a couple of Vick's former bait dogs are now visiting hospitals and nursing homes as therapy dogs.)
Jarvis was rescued from a bad neighborhood by a woman who feeds feral cats. Admittedly, she doesn't know much about dogs, but she knew this guy was in bad shape and knew that if she left him where he was, he would most assuredly die an ugly death. His eye was badly injured and he was walking only on 3 legs. His head and body had multiple infected puncture wounds and honestly, it was questionable as to whether this dog could be saved. But after a 6-day stay under the care of Dr. Grasso at Hollywood Animal Hospital, a bath and some gentle and loving hands, he took a turn for the better: he began walking on all fours and started to eat. So we proceeded with the surgery to remove his infected eye. He has also been thoroughly examined, vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped.
But in the meantime, we are looking for a foster home for Jarvis. Since he is still at the hospital, we are not sure about cats or kids - but the staff says that when he walks through the hospital, he is totally indifferent to other dogs.
Jarvis is about 2 years old and is full grown at about 35 pounds. He is a total Heinz 57 with a little Boxer mixed in. He is living at Hollywood Animal Hospital in Broward County. Remember - if you foster for us, we pay for, or provide everything you will need - AND - your time can be used for community or school service hours.
PLEASE ~ PLEASE ~ PLEASE ~ HELP US GET HIM OUT OF THE HOSPITAL.
Interested parties may contact me directly: 954-579-3753 or by email. I do work days but I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you cannot foster and would like to make a contribution towards his vet care, we have a PAYPAL link on the main page of our website - or you can mail a check to 1881 SW 21 Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315.
Thanks so much. Jan Milbyer, GRATEFUL PAWS DOG & CAT RESCUE, INC.''

Beau Still Needs a Home
Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida is still looking for Beau's forever home. He's just gorgeous. Here's his bio:
My name is Beau amd I am a young energetic black Lab. I'm smart, friendly, playful and full of happiness. I love everyone and everything, I get along with cat's, dog's, turtles, birds you name it I love them. I do have a slight handicap in my front paws, however, I don't even realize it because it doesn't slow me down (I think it kinda gives me character). I am house broken and very well behaved. I love to go hunting in the backyard for lizards, trips in the car and to the doggie park to hang out with all my buddies. I am a VERY special dog who truly deserves a great forever home. Click here for the adoption application.
