It's not the first time a thief has tried to tug on his victim's heartstrings, but it is the most recent.
Sunday in Boca Raton, a man walked into the BP gas station at 3975 N. Federal Highway, made a purchase, and then demanded money.
When the clerk declined, he walked around the counter, tried to grab cash out of the register and then told her, "I have cancer, give me the money."
The clerk, Eileen Islas, then grabbed the phone and called 911. The would-be bandit then said he was just kidding and took off.
He is described as five feet, seven inches tall, weighing 190 pounds with blonde hair.
Boca cops ask anyone with information to call Detective Sanchez at 561-338-1307.
