Nayara Goncalves, 20, of Brazil, tried to convince an armed man to find God on Friday, as he attempted to rob the Metro PCS cell phone store she manages in Pompano Beach. Here is the story.
Would be robber: I really hate to do this ... Give me all the money in the register.
Goncalves: I don't have any money in the register. I just opened.
Would-be robber: Don't be scared. Nice and calm
Goncalves: You can do what ever you want. I am just going to talk to you about the Jesus I got before you leave.
Would-be robber: God bless you for that.
Goncalves: I am Christian.
Would-be robber: So am I and I absolutely hate doing this ... I am embarrassed to have to do this but I have no choice.
Goncalves: You are young. You have beautiful eyes. You don't need to do this.
Would-be robber: You are making it harder.
Goncalves: Jesus has something way better for you, for every one that is out there. I am not blaming you. I am not judging you. I don't know what you are going through. But all of us are going through a hard time right now.
Would-be robber: That's why I refuse to do anything to anybody out there in the streets. I have never done this before.
Goncalves: You know Jesus has a beautiful city in heaven.
Would-be robber: This is so ironic.
Goncalves: I am not trying to B.S. you. You have a gun, if you want to come in I will never and ever going to stop you.
Would-be robber: I go to.
Goncalves: I have gone there. I love Pastor Bob.
Would-be robber: Pastor Bob? The Pastor? The Latin one? I am so sorry. I am so sorry to put you through this.
Goncalves: I go to the family of God. Every day I pray to God to protect us and to protect people on the streets. I don't know if you have a family.
Would-be robber: That's why I am doing this.
Goncalves: I can try to help you find a job. I have a lot of friends in church.
Would-be robber: I have a job.
Goncalves: Then why are you doing this?
Would-be robber: Because I'm going to be evicted if I don't come up with $300. I am so sorry to do this to you.
Goncalves: You don't have a friend that could let you borrow the money.
Would-be robber: I have spent the last three days trying to do that. Look I know that you have to call the police. I know that you have to do what you have to do. I am not very good at this obviously.
Goncalves: There is no money in the register.
Would-be robber: Can you show me?
Would-be robber: Do you own the store?
Goncalves: No. I am the manager.
Would-be robber: I am sorry. I won't be hurting you. I will have to take the stack.
Goncalves: They will charge me for it. I am the one responsible. No one comes here.
Would-be robber: I don't want to do that to you. I am sorry. I am sorry. I understand if you have to call the police.
Goncalves: You know you don't need to do that. You know Jesus. He can help you.
Would-be robber: God bless you.
Goncalves: Jesus helps you. He can change your life. Go back to church. Find a job. Get real friends in church. talk to a pastor. They can pray for you. You don't need to do this. Jesus is coming soon. Go to YouTube. Start watching the videos. Is going to change your life. I was just watching it yesterday and it changed completely my life. Jesus is coming really soon. The end is coming. There is no time.
Would-be robber: You know one thing. Good will be coming your way for what you did today. God bless you and have a good day.
Goncalves: Thank you so much for not doing anything with me.
Would-be robber: You want to know something? It's not real. It's a BB gun. That's how great I am at this.
Goncalves: Be careful. Be careful. Have a good one. May God bless you.Miami Herald Staff James H. Burnett III has the story.
