1 dead in Wellington plane crash

One person died in a plane crash Monday afternoon near the Wellington Aero Club.

The plane is a Sonex, fixed-wing, single-engine amateur-built experimental aircraft, according to Kathleen Bergen, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman.

The small plane crashed around 12:55 p.m. into a lake in the 2900 block of Greenbriar Boulevard.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews removed one person from the cockpit. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesman said.

That person was the only one in the plane, Bergen said.

The crash location is near the aero club, which is a private airpark community south of Southern Boulevard and northwest of Pierson Road. The location is also near the Wellington Dog Park which is located at 2975 Greenbriar Blvd.
