Doral getting a new kind of Sergio's restaurant

Doral, the land of restaurants, is getting a new player.

Sergio’s, a popular Cuban food chain, is opening its fifth Miami-Dade location on what is known as restaurant row -- a heavily-traveled stretch along Northwest 87th Avenue between 12th and 36th streets.

But this is not your abuelo’s Sergio’s.

SergioThe new Sergio’s at 1640 NW 87th Ave. will be unlike any other, with three features being unveiled by the chain: a drive-through, a bar and an extra large patio, not to mention 110 parking spaces, a commodity in high-demand in Doral.

“We felt there was a need for a Cuban restaurant in Doral, but we wanted to make it special,” said Sergio’s vice president, Carlos Gazitua, speaking before the restaurant’s grand opening Thursday night.

Besides its typical Cuban menu, the eatery will also carry low-carb items as part of the restaurant’s La Flaca menu, which includes cauliflower white rice and whole wheat baked empanadas.

And the bar will specialize in mojitos, but also served local craft beers from the Wynwood Brewery.

Sergio’s opened its first restaurant in 1975.
