A Key Largo man has been arrested in North Carolina, accused of sexually assaulting a teen girl in Monroe County.
Early Saturday morning, agents with the U.S. Marshal's Service arrested Marcus Elias Hammer, 41, at a Dunn., N.C., hotel. He was wanted for "repeatedly raping a Key Largo teen and for threatening her with a knife and a gun on multiple occasions to force her to comply" over the past two years, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
It was the second time in less than a week a Keys man was arrested out of state for alleged sexual assault in Monroe. On Wednesday, Ricky Lee Good, 37, was arrested in Jackson County, W. Va., charged with forcing a Key West woman to have sex against her will the previous weekend in the Southernmost City.
In the Hammer case, says Deputy Becky Herrin, the teen reported the abuse to a school resource officer, who called the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives Deborah Ryan and Lissette Zuelch interviewed the teen and "several witnesses," and obtained an arrest warrant on eight charges of armed sexual battery, possession of material depicting a sexual performance by a child and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The detectives received information Hammer was in Dunn and notified the Marshal's Service. He'll be extradited to face the charges.
Details of his felony conviction were unclear Sunday, as Monroe County Circuit Court and Florida Department of Corrections records don't indicate any felony conviction for Hammer in Florida. But he had been arrested in the Upper Keys on Feb. 29, 2012, on warrants alleging failure to appear in court and violation of probation. On June 12, 2012, he was arrested for failure to appear. To what those charges were connected also wasn't clear Sunday.
As for Good, who has a lengthy Monroe rap sheet, Key West police say the woman in that case met him through a friend on Jan. 25. Later that day, police spokeswoman Alyson Crean said, Good showed up at the woman's Duval Street home and tried to assault her but she was able to push him off her, and they left the home separately.
The following day, he reportedly showed up again and attacked her while choking her and threatening to kill her with a knife. Crean said Good finally left when the woman told him she'd rather die than be subject to more abuse.
Good was traced to West Virginia because his mother lives there. He's charged with sexual battery, false imprisonment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary. Like Hammer, he'll be extradited to face the charges.
Good was in state prison from Nov. 27, 2013, to this past Jan. 24 -- the day before he was introduced to the woman in Key West. The conviction was for grand theft auto and he had received one year, four months, but apparently had been credited with some local time served since he didn't serve close to that in the state system.
Other charges on his Keys rap sheet, going back to February 2012, include felony battery by a jail inmate, felony stalking, misdemeanor battery, trespassing and defrauding an innkeeper.
