An incident that began with gunfire in Pompano Beach ended in a violent single-car crash off Interstate 95 just north of Sample Road early Sunday morning.

The crash left one man dead and another in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say two men began shooting at a man and woman in the 2900 block of Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach at around 5 a.m. No one was hit by gunfire.

The shooters then took off and the victims followed, according to BSO.

FHP Spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said that somehow the “suspect car” then careened off the side of the road.

“There was heavy damage to the vehicle,” he said.

One man died in the crash and the other was taken in critical condition to Broward Health North Medical Center.

Wysocky said the victims in the other car — who were not involved in the crash — were talking to BSO detectives. FHP is looking into whether speed was a factor in the crash.
