Trooper killed on side of highway

A veteran Florida Highway Patrol trooper was killed after being struck by a vehicle while she was working a traffic crash on Interstate 75 in Marion County.

FHP officials says Trooper Chelsea Richard died Saturday afternoon after she, a tow truck driver and another pedestrian were hit by a pickup truck as they stood on the shoulder of the road.

Richard and the tow truck driver were pronounced dead at the scene. FHP said the third pedestrian was listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Richard was a nine-year veteran of FHP.

Troopers in Florida are overworked,& underpaid. They are exposed to more violence than City Cops, their back up is further away than their counterparts in the city, and they still do a great job risking their lives every day. This is a sad day for these families, for law enforcement, for FHP ,and for all of us who trust them to protect our safety. RIP
