Murphy, Beck struggle at Thurs. practice

One player, it seemed to these eyes, had a tougher time during practice Thursday than John Beck.

That was rookie guard Shawn Murphy.

The Dolphins just finished almost 2 1/2 hours of work and this should tell you all you need to know about the struggles of the offense: At one point offensive line coach Mike Maser, quickly becoming one of my favorites, yelled, "WTF is going on with you," to center Matt Spanos.

A little while later, tight end coach George DeLeone angrily yelled, "What are we doing out there?"

Well, what Murphy was doing was getting a hard-learned lesson in NFL offensive line play from Vonnie Holliday. Getting a chance to work with the first unit at left guard, Murphy gave up sacks to Holliday on consecutive plays. He also yielded a couple of pressures before getting a tiny bit better later in the practice.

It was hard to figure out if Murphy was truly improving or Holliday was holding back a bit. Welcome to the NFL, rook.

One rookie who had a pretty productive practice was Chad Henne. He had a sweet pass to tight end Anthony Fasano despite tight coverage. He also had a string in which he completed passes to David Martin, Ted Ginn Jr., Davone Bess and Sean Ryan. Good stuff.

By contrast, John Beck had a tough day. Again. He had a ball batted early in the practice. He was 0-for-4 in another team portion, although one of those was dropped by Greg Camarillo, and he generally looked out of sorts. Camarillo dropped a couple of passes today.

The good?

Derek Hagan continues to be the most impressive and productive receiver on the field.

Quentin Moses had a sack and a couple of pressures.

Holliday, after a productive afternoon, didn't seem to be sweating all that hard after the drills. He looks like a beast right now. The offseason program definitely has helped him.

The kickers?

Punter Brandon Fields had a 74-yard punt and few kicks later followed with a 55-yarder.

In the field goal battle, Jay Feely connected on 2-of-3, missing the 44-yarder. Rookie Dan Carpenter connected on 1-of-3, missing from 36 and 41 yards but hitting from 44.

One guy that seriously has to improve on special teams is rookie Selwyn Lymon who got destroyed as a gunner on punts by the blocking ends. He got only 1 yard off the line of scrimmage before being taken to the ground. Then one of the guys basically sat on him.

Not good for a rookie who must shine on teams if he's going to make the team.

By the way, Davone Bess looked good catching punts and was generally efficient in team drills. Jayson Foster dropped a punt despite a two-minute tutorial from Bill Parcells in the middle of the field.

Thats great Henne is looking good atleast. I say if he keeps showing hes constantly good I would play him.

Only one way to go from here...

what is with beck man I want the guy to do well but he has to start putting it together already, when i went to practice his pocket presence was terrible he needs to move around better in the pocket

Beck may be struggling right now but he'll improve. Nice to see Henne have a good day, but while all the experimenting is going on with the O line the qbs are going to have a tough time. As you say G, only one way to go from here.

ITS GOOD TO SEE THAT HAGAN IS MAKING SOME PLAYS BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN A HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT

Yeah Hagans going to wait until the regular season before he starts to drop every other pass, I sure hope I'm wrong about that though

looks like Thomas is going to win the guard spot
and Feely is going to win the kicker although I don't think their was ever a question with Feely though. I like the idea of have such a young line it means it could be good for years, that is if they don't get killed come real games

Joey Porters been tearing it up too, him and Holliday seem impresive so far all we need is for them to stop worring about Roths draft status and replace him with Langford. kinda pushing for Moses to push out anderson too

Beck won't make the roster, sorry John the writing is on the wall. It was a long shot from the beginning. That Cameron should never be allowed back in the state of Florida.. ever.Bring Favre in or trade for one of the Cleveland QBz

i think they should call up cam cameron and fire him once again. what a moron, what a horrible draft he and that other idiot had.

Armando,

There was another report where in the 11 on 11 out of 8 snaps, john was sacked 5 times. Does that contribute to Beck's not to hot showing?

How about the red zone drills?

Who gives a f$%^ how players look in practice, as compared to actual games! People need to quit jumping to conclusions because people have poor practices.

Thanks for the update Armando, this is what I like to read from you and NOT your silly criticisms of every move that Parcell's makes or is considering.

Yeah, I knew it was a mistake to pass on quinn. I knew it would come back to haunt us. Cameron and mueller should be jailed and feed grounded up auto parts and moon dust for two years to make atonement for their sins. This qb situation would have been over and this year we could have addressed other needs.

Right. We would have given a billion dollars for cry-baby Quinn as our first round pick, who by all accounts is having a very poor camp.

Mueller's draft was not bad. Satele, Ginn, Mauia, Fields, and Booker (traded for another pick, so we got it back)

We've had worse drafts. But Brady Quinn would not have helped.

I don't see how you can judge any QB with the O-line the way it is. Were rebuilding and it's going to be bad, we just have to play the rookies. I think it was SI that said Dolphins 2-14. Is it to early to start talking about the draft.

It seems that Beck is just pressing too hard. He is pshyching himself out by thinking too much. He is constantly asking questions and always studying and while YES, that's great, he has to remember to relax and have a little fun. He needs to stop worrying so much and let his natural ability take over. Once he starts relaxing things will slow down and he will be just fine. Too early to judge at this point.

hi all
i want to thank all you who have gone to the camp in Nova,i havent gotten a chance to go, but it looks hot!
as for the qb, looks like a tight race as some look great at camp, and beck doesent, hmmm
i do like beck, i dont like to see him doing so bad
but i think getting his butt kicked daly, mabe hes learing from his mistakes, What I learned, however, was that as I matured I would continue to make mistakes, but I would learn more quickly from them. Maturity helps us become better leaders because it helps us learn from our mistakes.
a great man once said (Teddy Roosevelt)
The man who makes no mistakes does not usually make anything." Successful people usually have a string of failures in their past -- that they used as a platform to further success.
Go Beck

I, like may of you, really wanted Beck to succeed. He's a good guy, says all the right things, is sincere & personable. But the writing on the wall is getting clearer, and it says CaMoron was an idiot, and Beck does not have what it takes. I KNOW its just practice, but guys--an exh. game is just 9 or so days away, and if this pattern (& yes, that's what it is now -- the knocked down passes, the balls slipping out of his hands, the confusion) continues, I fear for the Fins' year. That rat bastard Cam set us back a year or two w/ that Ginn/Beck duo. Don't hate me, I truly hope I'm wrong, and that Beck starts looking like those YouTube college highlights that got me over my anger re no-Quinn last year.

mjz, the rest of us would appreciate if just one of your posts is a commentary on the information or opinion mando puts out there instead of a commentary on his work or style or approach. Geez, get your nose out of the guy's jock.

"Who gives a f$%^ how players look in practice, as compared to actual games! People need to quit jumping to conclusions because people have poor practices."

Jon, if Beck can't get it together in practices, what is he going to do when the "real" pressure is on in game situations either home or even worse at away games ?

McCown starts, Beck gets cut and Henne takes over next year.

GO FINS!!!

No Ramsterone, it is not to early to be talking about next year's draft. After a 3-13 season we will be picking in the top 3 again and can get Brian Cushing from USC. He will make tons of tackles like Zach while being able to rush the passer like JT. Thinking about him in our defense excites me more than the upcoming season to be honest with you. Hey, and maybe we can use the 2nd rd draft pick we got for JT to draft yet another QB. Sweet!

Just take a look at the performance Henne gave against the gaytors in the bowl game Henne can flat out play i'm surprised he isn't seeing reps as the number one guy after Beck's play

okay i heard some on mention it a few posts up but miami really needs to do something aboutt he QB situation , im pulling for beck but if these reports keep coming out theres no need to even keep him around the dolphins need to go and try make a move and finally get brady Quinn from cleveland cause we all know he isnt gonna play for them Derek Anderson is a solid quaterback i dont see him going no where but up we could trade the two we got some draft picks and get quinn from them. the defence seems to be getting back the name we once had cause holliday and porter have something to prove , what so funny is we ae talking abouthe receivers but they cant get any better if they dont have anyone to throw them the ball . GET BRADY QUINN , no dis respect to GIN he SOLID BUT CAMERON was an idoit for passing on QUINN . GET BRADY QUINN >>>>>>>>>>>GET BRADY QUINN

Have patience grasshoppers. Brady Quinn isn't even good enough to play in Cleveland, we sure don't want or need him. It is only a matter of time before either Henne or perhaps Beck will take the position and grow into a top notch QB. Let's try to remember the Manning brothers initial indoctrination into the NFL. How about Troy Aikman's first year in Dallas? The list goes on and on. There is finally a plan formulated by real "football" men that will restore glory to the Phins.

RUN RICKY RUN!!!

Mickeyfinn, Bangee, David Bond: I have no idea whether Henne and Beck will ever amount to solid NFL starting QBs. Equally unclear to me is your fascination with one quarterback over all others in the NFL ... what, exactly, makes you think Cleveland's second-stringer can even play? He's done exactly the same in the NFL as Beck and Henne, zero. Both Dolphin youngsters were AT LEAST as good in college; many scouts preferred them. Yes, The Mighty Quinn was on TV every week, defeating Navy or getting humiliated by major league competition. So the Dolphins will be forever "haunted" by the reasonable decision to pass on him? It seems the only people haunted are the persistent Brady Quinn Legion. In other words, fans who prefer Notre Dame to the Dolphins.

Agreed, we will never know if Quinn would have produced on the field for us so stop speculating.

As for our current crop of QB's, Beck lacks the talent to win at this level, BYU is a long way from the NFL.

We start Mcknown on week one, cut Beck and groom Henne for a mid-year takeover...if that fails we grab Tebow in next year's draft

Tebow?!!! He will be an aweful NFL QB! What the heck are you thinking?! Jts becasue you win the Heisman and do well in college, does not mean that you will be good in the NFL. Take a look at history buddy and do some homework. My guess is you are a Gator fan?

Many of you forget the whole purpose of camps, try stuff out see where weaks and strengths are then try your best guess in the pre-season. Then by the time real games roll around you have an idea who goes where. Beck Henne Mc, from what I've seen, and heard repeated from you guys, it doesn't matter who you put in, they are all about the same level. so in a week flip a coin and decide who plays.

Beck has the most talent of all the quarterbacks they have in camp. The problem is that he is a head case. It takes him a while to get used to the offense and get his confidence...which will create problems in the NFL. At this level you need to learn quick and have that natural ability. Only time will tell if Beck can adapt.
