Last update of the day for Wednesday

The idea that Jay Feely needed to be cut by the Dolphins, in a small part, because he was too vocal in the media and with his teammates is not foreign to some players still on the team -- even one player who calls himself Feely's friend.

"Jay's my boy," linebacker Joey Porter said Wednesday. "I like Jay Feely a lot. But at the same time, certain players get to do certain things and certain players don't. Nothing against Jay, but kickers don't get to be as vocal as I would be. I don't care who you are. [Mike] Vanderjagt tried and he got kicked out of Indy and he was the best kicker in the game. Kickers don't get to talk a whole lot."

Porter said the Dolphins picked, "the cheapest player," in the kicking competition.

------------------------------

Josh McCown and John Beck had the best day of Miami's four quarterbacks in Wednesday's practice because, well, they took only a handful of snaps in team drills while Chad Pennington and Chad Henne took the 36 between them and stunk struggled.

Pennington was 6 of 21 with zero touchdowns and two interceptions during the entirety of the team drills, which were split up into three parts. Pennington and the starting receivers were not always on the same page but he was also victimized by some horrible happenstance.

On one sure TD pass he hit TE Sean Ryan in the hands and the guy not only drops the pass, he drops it into the hands of Joey Thomas for an INT. Pennington's second INT was legit as Will Billingsley simply plucked a weak pass in the corner of the end zone out of the air. Derek Hagan, by the way, didn't exactly defend well, which is what he's called to do when he doesn't have a chance to catch it himself.

Pennington did have the nicest completion of the day -- a 40-yard-plus connection with Greg Camarillo. Camarillo also had a leaping grab of a Henne pass across the middle later in the practice so he had a good day.

Henne was not so good either. He completed 7 of 15 passes without a TD nor an INT. Henne also took a sack.

------------------------------

An item in profootballtalk.com today confirms an item on this blog from Saturday that Chad Pennington's deal could be worth $11.5 million but only if the guy takes Miami to the Super Bowl and he wins the MVP. The real value of the deal is more like $8 million. He got $500,000 to sign last week.

-------------------------------

It was surprising to see but only hours after coach Tony Sparano said he's seeing improvement from Ernest Wilford in practices, I see him fall another notch in the ever-changing depth chart.

While we all know Wilford dropped from starter to third receiver last week behind Ted Ginn and Derek Hagan, today while the team worked in three-receiver sets, he wasn't one of the three receivers. Rookie Davone Bess, Ginn and Hagan were the three WRs working with the starters. Wilford was working with the second group. Interesting.

----------------------------

The Dolphins want to find a place for RB Patrick Cobbs on this team so don't be surprised to see him on kick returns Saturday versus Jacksonville.

----------------------------

Quickie Jake Long update: Good news. Nothing to report. He doesn't give up sacks, he doesn't jump offsides. Does he have work to do? Yes, on his technique. But he's never overmatched.

Armando,

Just want to say thanks for taking the time to do this blog the right way. Cheers

Armando,
I usually have your back but I do have to point out that you seem to be unfairly critical of Henne. I dont know what it is about the guy but it comes out in your writing. You say for the #1 overall pick in the draft Long has a good day because there is nothing to say about him but Henne has a not so good day because he completes half his passes and doesnt give up an int or throw a TD....somehow I think thats contradictory. A late 2nd round pick, expected to be the #3 QB who has worked himself as the primary backup is pretty good. The fact that he doesnt make too many mistakes and is learning pretty fast in my opinion makes him a pretty nice story this offseason, much better than Beck. Id say he is on par with Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron has had three seasons to learn.

I don't like this new regime. They are rubbing me the wrong way. Jay Feeley, was the only thing that was good last season and I really liked his insight. It was a lot better then what you mostly get from players. If it was because they wanted to go younger and cheaper fine, but not because they didn't like him talking or that he was a captian on a 1-15 team last year.

Yeah thanks Armando. I got bad news as I realized that NFL Network isn't replaying the Jacksonville game until Monday which means I won't be able to watch it till Monday night, so I can't really discuss the plethora of blogs that will follow in those first couple of days.

For those who don't know, the games are being shown (replayed) at the following times:

8/18 (Jacksonville) at 1pm Eastern
8/24 (Kansas City) at 10am Eastern
8/31 (New Orleans) at 10am Eastern

One loudmouth supporting another loudmouth. Well, you know what they say: "Birds of a feather, flock together." I never cared for either Feely or Porter. One down, and one to go as far as I'm concerned.

I gotta give some props to Patrick Cobbs. Everybody tries to write him off, but he's finding a way to stick around. So, I gotta give up some props for his hardwork and never say die attitude.

Let it go Stew, he's a freakin kicker not half of the roster.

I can't believe the Fins would be ready to ditch Beck and go with Henne. Henne is notoriously inaccurate and he simply can't read defenses. Beck is accurate and makes good decisions - and still has a gun.

Andy, what alternative universe are you in? Beck hasn't been accurate at all, and if anyone 'has a gun' on this team, it is Henne. But since we can't have any agreement on the Henne/Beck/McCown debate I think we should cut all of them and just wait patiently for Tebow to save our souls.

Whoever gets that number one pick next year is going to score big time.

Is it just me or are other Dolphin fans getting sick of seeing the Sparano ALWAYS at the press box inside wearing sun glasses?????

I'd love to see Tebow here, but I also hope that we win too many games to get him.

Here is the quote: "Porter said the Dolphins picked, "the cheapest player," in the kicking competition." Thats how the old school guys do it. He's a freakin' kicker! He has the best season ever for a Phin's kicker and we have the worst season...how important can he be?

Good stuff, Armando. It's good to know that Jake Long seems to be every bit the stud we hoped he would be. I've heard good reports on him throughout camp.

Thanks for the NFL replay dates, Tinshaker. I'm bummed we don't get to see it on Sunday.

I think Beck changing his mechanics has hurt him this year. Last preseason he had the most impressive arm by everyone's account and threw a pretty ball. If he can't adjust to the new mechanics, he should just scrap it and start slinging it again.

I'd love to see Tebow here, but I also hope that we win too many games to get him.

thanks for the updates, but,

It isn't really interesting to see bess out there and not Wilford, because Bess is being brought along as a slot receiver ala wes wilker. Wilford is too big for slot. slot often goes to smaller and shiftier guys.

thanks

Yeah Andy your right Beck has been amazing since he has been here kinda reminds me a lil of dear I say it Marino... What games/practices have you been watching where Beck has out shined Henne? There is a reason he isnt getting as many reps as before he doesnt have it plain ans simple some guys have it some dont. He hasnt shown anything that says he has it since we drafted him.

Jay D, don't be surprised if we see McCown and Beck get more reps next week. I think Sparano is breaking this up in blocks, not pieces. I'm not convinced Henne is the #2. Beck and McCown have been working longer than Henne going back to April. They're trying to get Henne up to speed and now Pennington. We'll know more after the 3rd preseason game.

Is anyone else finding it as disconcerting as I do that the Trifecta was so quick to sign guys like Wilford and McCown then after they were all but handed starting jobs on this team, they've come up so small that one of them has already been shoved aside (by Pennington) and it sounds as though Wilford is as good as gone as soon as a more accomplished WR is available? While it should be applauded that they aren't compounding their mistakes by forcing these guys into starting roles, the fact that they were so quick to sign them calls their collective judgement into serious question.

I heard on Sirius NFL channel the fins are looking to change the uniform colors next year....I know it's not a big deal, but the colors are looking a little 1980 Miami Vice-ish. I agree, something mean looking than teal & orange.

Stew-

What exactly is your beef with the Trifecta?

Hey Matt-

When did you hear about the possible uniform change? I have SIRIUS and listen to Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan on Moving the Chains. It really should be required listening for some of the chuckleheads that post here.

T. Martin, what you said makes zero sense. Nobody is going to hit on every pick or every FA acquisition. THe whole key about player personnel is to hit more then you miss and don't allow your misses to cost you draft wize or financially long term. We could cut Wilford and McCown today and it wouldn't hurt the future of this team whatsoever. Relax

Oh, by the way, I LOVE MEN!

You're just assuming they were "handed starting jobs." That was never stated, certainly not by Dolphins management. It seemed logical because on paper, every guy they signed was an automatic improvement over the dead-alive they were replacing. It's obvious these guys are continually trying to upgrade the roster and it will most likely have a revolving door on it for the next couple of seasons.

you guys are dreamers and and not good fans. its no wonder the guys don't play well if they read all this crap about themselves. oh by the way henne put up better passing number then teboe at the same point in college. and he beat the guy. teboe needs to play for a team that has positive reinforcement. so does henne both have talent. let henne grow and then eat crow

Mr Bungle, I understand that it is early to write anyone off. However, when I was replyin to Andy comparison of Beck and Henne I just havent seen or heard anything that backed up what he said. Since Beck has been here he has been nothing but jittery in the pocket he hasnt showed any arm strength cause all he does is check the ball down and really hasnt showed anything yet. I agree that changing his mechanics has been bad for his progress. I dont think a QB's mechanics should be changed as agressivly as most teams try and do. For example look at what happened to David Carr they changed his mechanics and has never been the same. Thats besides the point though I just feel Beck really needs to step up if he is ever going to be accpeted the 3 guys running show. I hope he turns out well but it doesnt look to promising yet. AS for McCown he has been in the league long enough to show case his talents and he has proved that he isnt a starting quality. He is a backup at best and if Beck can gain some composure he could beat out McCown but I dont think he will beat out Henne for the number 2 spot cause Henne is at the same level at Beck as of now and will only get better... fingers crossed

beck is garbage what the f--- are you beck supporters watching.... henne came in that first game and looked real confident throwing and doing something beck needs to learn, SCRAMBLE...

Jay D you forgot about Beck last year when he proved to have the best arm in camp. He changed his mechanics this year. Call it an excuse. I'm just saying. He's a young NFL QB working through it.

I would say give Beck more of a chance..but the dude is 27...and a Mormon.

mr. bungle pennington is the starter and henne will be his backup. i would be very surprised if the rotation changed.

All you FinFans watch...The Dolphins will be the surprise team of the season. 10-6. Wild Card AFC East. Ronnie gets 1200 yards and Ricky gets 800 (remember Csonka/Kiick/Morris?). Oh...Favre won't make it to mid season...

Wow Gil, pass that over here, it must be good shi-. This is rebuilding year 1, not fantasy island. As for the endless QB debate lets stay realistic. Sometimes on these boards it seems like its 2001 and we are debating Kurt Warner versus Trent Green. We currently have a has-been, a never-was, and basically two unproven rookies who have accomplished squat. Henne has been somewhat impressive, while Beck has not. Still, lets not get ahead of ourselves annointing Henne, considering he has not even thrown a preseason TD yet. There is no guarantee that any of these QB's will be the answer in the present, let alone the future.

I'd rather see Beck and Henne play than Chad Pennington. This is not the "superbowl run year." Playing a veteran for short term glory in a rebuilding year is bad judgement. The Trifecta is coaching scared. When Pennington struggles, which he will, the Boo Birds will rain down in Joe Robbie Stadium.

So far none of these QB's has looked as good as John Beck did last preseason. John Beck showed more last preseason than Henne has this year. Still time for that to change thoough...but a sobering thouygt for the Henne bandwagon.

I for one want to see John Beck leave the team, but not for the same reasons a lot of you might want him gone. I personally think he deserves better than a lot of the anti-Mormon crap he's been getting from closed-minded people on blogs and fansites. I think he could use a fresh start in a place where he doesn't get thrown to the wolves in year one, have the offense and his throwing motion changed in year two, only to get the two week ultimatum crap laid on him by Parcells and Sparano.
Please, release John Beck! Maybe he can sign on someplace with stability and sanity while he isn't shell-shocked into retirement!

I didn't follow camp last year so I don't know how Beck looked then. All I can say is that he hasn't shown anything positive since, and also that even I would look pretty good lining up next to Cleo Lemon....

Cheapest Kicker? Maybe, But I've watched Carpenter nail field goals for the last three years. He is the real deal.

It seems to me that the Dolphins more often than not just flat out release some great talent. Have they traded anyone other than JT?

Some of you keep saying that Beck is so accurate ect. Did you guys watch the same game as I did on saturday? There are little things that stand out like not leading the receiver with the pass but rather throwing it to where they can not run after the catch. I am not throwing off on Beck because he is only in his second year and they have changed his mechanics with his throw. I know we all want a franchise QB now but Henne and Beck will take time to develope into what they will become.

PLeeeeeeaaaasssseee, with this John F*ckin' BUST BECK already!!!! Then, you guys wonder why we s*ck. The guy played in a weak conference with a weak schedule with a weak arm with a 4 year hiatus. If he wanted to be an NFL QB or even thought he could be, he should have stayed in college and entered the NFL at 23-24 years of age. This guy reminds me of Drew Henson, BUST!
Henne is the real deal. How can you compare these guys' college stats? One division with national exposure for a reason and another in the Mountain conference? C'mon now, STOP!!!! I don't care about the coaches changing his mechanics. If he had good mechanics to begin with, this would not even be a conversation. FACE IT: BECK IS A BUST PICK FOR US. NO COMPARISON WITH HIM AND HENNE. NONE. GET EYEGLASSES. WHAT THE HECK DID BECK DO TO GET THIS TYPE OF FAN SUPPORT? YOU WOULD'VE SWORN THIS GUY ID BETTER THAN DANNY BOY MARINO FROM WHAT I AM READING. WAKE UP CALL: HE IS NOT. THERE IS ONE MARINO AND I HOPE HENNE CAN JUST COME 1/2 WAY CLOSE TO THAT. LET'S MOVE ON AND SHIP BECK ON ANOTHER MORMON MISSION. HEY, WHEN HE COMES BACK, WE MAY BE READY FOR A SUPERBOWL RUN! WDF!!!

Yeah well early on in camp they said Beck looked amazing as well. Guess what I havent seen it. No one else has seen anything that says Beck is going to turn it around. When he comes out stands in the pocket and starts playing QB I will get off his back. The guys just hasnt showed any promise at all.

BECK=BUST, ENOUGH SAID.

"Derek Hagan, by the way, didn't exactly defend well, which is what he's called to do when he doesn't have a chance to catch it himself."

THIS has been the a major part of the finz problem with wr's for the last 10 years.

they are NOT aggressive, either going up and getting the ball when covered on long balls, or defending when the ball is intercepted or is going to be intercepted.

and it costs them a lot of big plays!!

PENNINGTON THREW A 40 YD PASS? now thats a lie! we all know that "noodle arm" cant throw farther than 8 yds. you need to check your info there MANDO! you sure it wasnt 4 yds? :)

i think ted ginn is going to be just fine with pennington.

CHANGE: hey! putin and kim jong il and al quaeda and hamas and hugo chavez, rosie odonell, the taliban, communist china, lewis fahrakan, syria...... all americas best friends!! so VOTE FOR CHANGE! be with the IN crowd! they have americas best interests at heart? WAKE UP AMERICA!!

McGONE and Beck are competing as trade bait.
Neither will wear aqua and orange on opening day unless they get the mascot job.
Look for a third string QB from the waiver wire behind CHADx2.
What happened to Quincy? Williams and Carter as "The Doobie Brothers"?

I believe the league took it easy on Favre last year in deference to his age and accomplishement.
The deal is OFF this year.
I fear for his health!
Beck and McGONE may end up as "J-E-T-S"....

FEELY - Seriously!
Did you really expect "Da Tuna" to put up wit a loud mouth KICKER?
If Bill had his way, kicking the ball would be eliminated from "FOOTball"....

WOW! Political satire on a sports blog?

Baraconomics is an Obamination....

Can't wait to watch week one against the JETS.
I can see it now, our noodle arm vs dead arm.
Edge: Penny. Wait til he throws the 45 yarder to prove everyone wrong, especially, Jets fans on the first play of the game and we're up 7-0, that is if Carpenter hits the extra point.Just kidding, lol.

Its very pathetic to see so many religious bigots on the Dolphins forum. I think no matter what your opinion is on Beck, keep the anti-mormon stuff to yourselves. Fiedler was Jewish, Dan Marino is catholic and I worship the Phins each sunday....SO WHAT!

Bust Beck over his play (I think he has potential but I also see the same in Henne)

The biggest difference I have see so far (and it's way too early)is that Henne has more swagger which is great in a QB. Beck will be fine in this league for us or another team.

Please no political comments on this blog. You will end up bringing back the 9/11 was a conspiracy guy. Listening to him was worse than the people crying Beck has gotten a raw deal.

LOL Edswood too true. I hope that guy was banned from the forums after his last stint while Mando was on vacation.

THe infamous shawn

I made the comment about Mormon's. It's not religious bigotry. That would require an insult against a religion. Mormons are a cult.

Agreed. I posted such a thought a few days ago.
Whether or not the anti Mormon thing applies, a fresh start would be best for all concerned. Especially if we could actually get a draft pick for him.
I'm sure he will be showcased sometime, perhaps the 3rd pre-season game. Pennington needs lots of game work this week.
