Pasqualoni gives answers on Jason Allen

Many of you have asked, demanded, begged for reasons why Jason Allen is not Miami's starting free safety today despite the fact Chris Crocker clearly had at least one miscommunication issue against Arizona and this week Renaldo Hill is likely to start at free safety.

... which, by the way, means Allen is effectively third-team at free safety.

I have resisted asking the questions you guys have wanted me to ask this coaching staff because they take their cue from head coach Tony Sparano and he, frankly, has admitted he's never going to publicly unmask a player with criticism or sometimes even critique. In other words, he'll talk about players but he won't tell you when they make mistakes and where they fall short of the mark.

Having said that, I could not resist the idea of trying to get a legitimate answer from defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni.

I asked him: "What is Jason Allen not showing that he needs to show to take the next step?"

He answered: "Jason as everybody knows has great position flexibility. He's a safety, he can play a bigger corner position. So we're working him in a lot of places right now. He's doing well. He's practicing hard. He's practicing with focus. He's just got to keep going. Jason's got a chance to be a good player with his position flexibility."

So I press: "If he improves what?"

And he non-answers: "Well, he's, he's ... as a corner, you know he played corner in college, I think everybody knows that. I think everybody also knows playing corner in this league is a little bit different so you have to give him enough time to get comfortable with the coverages and the press and the bails and all the zones and the mans you play. I would say if you wanted to put your finger on one word it's just give him a little time and as time goes he'll improve and improve."

Do you understand my life's frustrations now?

ill give pasqualoni credit..... pretty impressive non-answer... cant he find a job on a political campaign?

wasn't that pasqualoni's defense that got smoked in arizona? he's an idiot so who cares what he has to say. the only thing he has ever done is destroy the syracuse football program.

The answer is Jason Allen is still learning.

I think he's clearly saying here that Jason needs to improve on learning how to read offenses, etc., think on the fly. Seems obvious to me.

He has the athletic talent, but the brain is not quite on par. Football brain at least.

Mando,

That is simple awesome. It also works well with Teddy Ginn:

"Teddy as everybody knows has great position flexibility. He's a flanker, he can play the slot. He is skilled in the return game. So we're working him in a lot of places right now. He's doing well. He's practicing hard. He's practicing with focus. He's just got to keep going. Teddy's got a chance to be a good player with his position flexibility."

So I press: "If he improves what?"

And he non-answers: "Well, he's, he's ... as receiver, you know he played receiver in college, I think everybody knows that. I think everybody also knows playing receiver in this league is a little bit different so you have to give him enough time to get comfortable with the coverages and the press and the bails and all the zones and the mans he sees. I would say if you wanted to put your finger on one word it's just give him a little time and as time goes he'll improve and improve."

Mltipurpose jbber jabber!

Quick question...How would you like your boss to respond to repeated questions regarding what someone might consider your lack of journalistic talent. Let's say you'll never be more than a "beat writer" and your boss confirms that to the world. Your in a field that is not even close to the level of competition that a professional athlete faces. That said, why would you want to make it even more difficult to succeed by exposing what you believe to be "an issue" to all. And you're frustrated...you got to be kidding.

I still don't understand why he wasn't manned up against one of AZ's big WR's. Unless they've decided to move him back to CB and he hasn't learned the defense yet.

I actually feel sorry for Allen, he gets his chops busted by the majority of (non)fans for being a bust (the biggest 1st round bust of his draft) according to several posters here. Yet Saban jacked him around moving him from CB to saftey, then Cameron moved him back to CB then back to saftey, now he's moving back to CB is sounds. Someone needs to put the guy in a spot and let him play. He is obviously not the "smartest" guy on the field, but instead more instinctive and athletic. That being said he's had to learn 2 positions from 3 different coaches and schemes.. It's like taking a dermatologist and having him do brain surgery one day and removing warts the next.

Armando...as much as I hate to say it. Thank you. I said that I would never read or write on your blog ever again. However, you are the only one who has done what I have begged others to address. It's as I thought, they are morons and they don't have a reason. Betty Crocker sucks. I found it amazing that every article that they had about how there was a battle between Jason and Crocker they always had a picture with Jason Allen making the play and Crocker watching him. Jason has more tackles than Betty and he isn't even starting. I have said it many times: Hill was utterly embarrased and abused by Moss last year...and injured while being embarrased by Moss. Yet they are going to start Him over Jason. They argue that we can't get our running game going because we are always training...yet they make this move. Jason is taller, faster, and more athletic than all of them. Y Bell is the only other one that should be back there as he has the power and smarts. Sporano is making the same mistake that Cam made and also said something recently as stupid as Fail Forward Fast. I'm not saying the kid is going to be a superstar but they need to see what he's got. This needs to be his season to get it or crash and burn. As I said before thanks for vaidating my concerns.

Chico - awesome!

JimBo - you're an idiot.

Mr Bungle & Dolfan Tom - what is obvious to me is that they have no intention of playing him at safety. The end.

Armando wrote "they take their cue from head coach Tony Sparano and he, frankly, has admitted he's never going to publicly unmask a player with criticism or sometimes even critique"

--- A-ha! But if only that were true, since he did such an amazing job of 'masking' his displeasure of Ike's performance, first saying in press briefing 1 that he did a sucky job (might not be an exact quote) and then in press breifing 2 saying that he had to spend all night with Ike going over film. To me, that is blatantly putting out one guy to the media/fans. He probably didn't MEAN to do it, but by not playing Allen he is also putting him out to the media as someone who's not performing up to standard. I say we stop beating around the bush and speak the truth. He could've said, Jason Allen is full time CB as of this season.

Coach P should run for office!!!

J Allen obviously has *something* in practice that coaches don't like. It's 3 regimes now. The first was the guy who drafted him. It's obvious to me the reason he is getting jacked from one position to another. The coaches just don't like him enough at any one position to keep him there. They keep hoping to salvage him.

Let's see.... safety: dude gets run over (it happened in the preseason right before he got demoted) and he is a poor tackler. corner: too big to turn his hips against the quicker guys.

Mando to Paul

J. Allen played corner and safey in college. He led the SEC in tackles as a junior from the safety position. Hill will be an improvement over Crocker, but J. Allen played well when Hill went down to injury last year. J. Allen picked Brady off in the end zone. Do we have a DB out there who can pick off his back up???

idahomer,

Allen was lined up on Jerheme Urban (AZ third receiver) and shut him out.

Jimbo, if The Miami Herald paid me what the Dolphins are paying Jason Allen -- which I think is around $11 million -- I wouldn't mind being accountable for my abilities or lack thereof. Also, I don't think thousands of people spend money for tickets or Directv fees to watch me write, thereby having a direct investment in my abilities.

finally, I asked the questions because the fans want to know and asked me to do it.

TinShaker... You're obviously mentally challenged. Have a nice day and don't forget that your GED test is tomorrow.

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE JASON ALLEN IS A AVERAGE COLLEGE PLAYER. NOT AN NFL CALIBER PLAYER. GO BACK AND WATCH ANY NFL TAPE ON THE GUY AND HE GETS BEAT LEFT AND RIGHT. ANOTHER GARBAGE PLAYE IS R.HILL JUST REWIND THE JETS GAME AND THE AZ GAME AND WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THERE COVERING R. HILL. IF YOU CANT STICK WITH A RECIEVER IN THE NFL YOU SHOULDNT BE PLAYING IN THE NFL. I JUST WISH OUR COACHING STAFF CAN SEE THIS AND CORRECT IT. I DO KNOW THE TALANT POOL OF FREE AGENTS AND DRAFTS ARE LIMITED BUT COME ON YOUR ON AN NFL ROSTER MAKING MILLIONS DOLLARS YOU NEED TO DO YOUR JOB AND QUITE ACTING LIKE YOUR A SUPERSTAR. YOUR NOT YOUR JUST NOT. EARN YOUR PAYCHECK AND COVER SOMEBODY. PEACE OUT.

Armando, forgot to thank you for asking the question. I bet everyone else there was on the edge of their seats HOPING he would let something slip.

JimBo, I'm not going to argue with someone named 'jimbo' but I will give you props for knowing how to spell GED. My double major college degree is quite impressed.

ManDo...I don't "thinks" you'll have to ever worry about knocking down anything in six figures let alone seven!

TinType...You're right, no sense in "going off" on each other. Funny thing, I was a double major in college as well. Got my MD and JD at the a fine northeastern university. Now I got to go because I have some patients to see.

Tinshaker your right the only beating they’ve done this season is around the bush…..Instead of choosing the wideouts and sticking to them so they can practice together and get some sort of cohesiveness they shuffle them around every other practice... We all expected Arizona to come out throwing they played to their strength.. the real dissapointing part of the loss was our pitiful offense. Id be tempted to sneak in Henne a couple of times during a series to sneak in a long ball to Ginn. And the running game is weak i miss rex hadnot atleast he could create some dam running room.

Mando,
Love your updates, however, you should be accountable for your abilities no matter your salary.

It is like asking Sarah Palin for her foreign policy experience and she responds and talks about how she helped her state achieve energy independence.

Our defensive coordinator is more proof of reincarnation, he IS Tom Olivadotti.

And this franchise doesn't need new coaches, or new players.

It needs an exorcism.

Quit pickin on Mando. I used to be a sports reporter too till i got out cause the pay sucks. Let's focus on the issue at hand. If Jason Allen doesn't get it by now, he never will.

Also, since I don't post here often....Coach CaMORON put this franchise back even further by drafting Ted Ginn's family and by just plain annoying us with his Father Knows Best approach to coaching, wasting another high pick in the process. We need guys like Crowder and Porter to play CONSISTENTLY instead of showing us glimpses. Our O-line will improve each week and I'm optimistic there, but our secondary is a lost cause yet again. I miss the days of Madison and Surtain. The last good drafter left town when Jimmy J retired. Peace out.

The fact is last year J. Allen led the team in INt's and didn't start but half the season, he also finished third or fourth on the team in tackles. If they let the guy play you will see what he does. It kills me how negative some of you people are are you couldn't start on a pee-wee team. we all know J. Allen is better than the guys there playing in front of him this year and last year. Are players going to make mistakes yes name one that doesn't. There letting J.long play through his mistakes so stop talking negative about players in which you can't do your self. Ask your self why J.Allen is not playing. He had a good season last year and a great pre-season then the 1st week of the regular season he not starting, please people think before you open up your mouth, Allen is smart and play well if they put him at one postion like there doing J. long and let him play you will see, like you were seeing last year.

Why don't you guys lay off of Jason. After three years, he's worked his way all the way up to third string. Plus, he's got "position flexibility" What more can you ask for?

Oop...I didn't mean to copy TRICKY's "peace out." I read his post after I wrote my own. Two archaic 'peace out's are more than enough for one thread.

I also miss O.J. McDuffie right now. HELL... I'll settle for Oronde Gadsden

JIMbo, pride comes before a fall. Make sure not to skip any malpractice insurance payments.

What he is saying is the guy "SUCKS" but he is stuck with him thanks to the "BIG TUNA"

Joey Porter needs to stfu. You ain't hard bytch. real hard dudes dont sucker punch someone while three of his boys are holding the dude down.

Why don't you go do something on the field queer. get a sack, break up a pass, hell when was the last time you made a tackle. Porter typical west coast bytch that thinks he's gangsta.

i wish Bryan Cox would've beat that ass the first week. That's a real Dolphin right there. Not this has been.

I remember watching the draft in which Ed Reed was drafted, and ESPN had several highlights of Reed's playmaking ability. I don't recall watching ANY Jason Allen highlights when he got drafted. 'Nuff said!

Boy does anyone remember when the phins started off hot and then came the "december swoon"? Ahh the glorys days of winning a game until the end when the defense collapsed, at least we were ahead. Dan Henning is about as predictable on his calls as a prisoner let out after twenty years and going to a **** house and wondering if he will get laid!! Does anyone notice that paul and dan have screwed up this offense and defense completly? No matter what players we get if we are being out coached then we will lose!!!!

Mando, thanks for trying to get through the 'company line'. Must be more frustrating for you guys than us trying to get straight answers.

You'd think these guys are working on a classified govt. project. Maybe it's a alien cover up. Wait I know, somes aliens from Klantaktu have taken over the minds of the coaching staff.

Hugh:

There are very few Ed Reed's but there was a highlight of J. Allen blowing up Winslow when UT played Miami in the Orange Bowl.

...." just give him a little time and as time goes he'll improve and improve."

He said two separate words twice two separate times as phrases in one sentence!

What a piece of crap. Armando, fire him. I hereby deputize you. You are the man.

Unfortunatly a coach can't win. He answers truthfully and he is dumped on by everyone. He avoids the answer and only has to answer to you/us.

What I am finding hard to believe is that everyone selected to play on this team should get a chance. I haven't seen anything from anyone on the Dolphins that would prove to me that they are the best at their position.

Not trying to be negative, but we should see what we have during game time. It is not like there is a chance we win the Super Bowl.

There are guys that only play well under pressure and the team should find out who that is.

ahhhh Ed Reed & brother Shawn Taylor. Now there are some guys that play(ed) safety at another level.

rest in peace my lil bro

Yeah Armando, it's tough being you. Sheesh.

I guess its because the secondary is soooo good without him. Both Kurt Warner and Farve are 5 years past their best years ( Farve will not repeat last year- his best in 5 or 6).

Further somebody tell the coach he has two stars on his team ( R and R ) and if he used them the opposing offense would not get 12 drives in a game.

Finally tell Joey P this team is 1-17 since he joined and likely the worse team in the NFL again this year . Shut the @@%*%^& up. Cassel will light them up.

So now we're judging the abilities of a current NFL player based on how many highlights you think you saw three or four years ago?

Please. How many Donald Thomas or Kendall Langford highlights did ESPN show this year? Hmm...I seem to remember ZERO.

What did I say in the last blog? I knew they wouldn't give an answer because the answer is he's just not smart enough yet. And how do you say that to the media without it being written as "Pasqualoni says Allen is stupid"? He did basically elude to it by saying the corner position is different in the pros than in college. That's exactly right because you actually have to think in the pros and can't play on all instinct. There is a thought process that comes into play and you need to make quick decisions based on your coverage scheme for that play and how an opponent is lining up against you. Allen obviously can not do this and if he could he would be on the field. They are playing their best players and have proven that to us time and time again. There is no conspiracy and no plan to screw with Allen. He's not the best player for that position therefore he is not on the field in that position. No matter what anyone who has watched him on their tv during preseason thinks, he is not the best player at that position on our team.

I guess everyone forgot that we are rebuilding and to tell the world exactly what they think is wrong with a player would screw us in any trade scenario. This is a game but it's also a business and right now Parcells is charged with making this team better. So when he and Ireland try to trade Allen (if that ever comes up) why would they give leverage to another GM in those negotiations? 'Okay we want a 4th round pick for him'./ 'But you said he has trouble picking up schemes and WE ALL KNOW he's in one of the most vanilla defenses in the league, we'll give you a 6th'. It's been so long since we have had people do things the right way that fans can't even think straight anymore. Maybe by playing him in the nickle and dime he will do good enough to impress someone and we can get value for him. What are we holding on to here, it's been three years already.

NYScott, except he was last year, and the guy who's supposedly 'the best at that position' is Chris Crocker. Also you say they have proven time and time again that they are playing our best players...is that why they played Patrick Cobbs so much in the Jets game? Or arguably why they're playing Ike again this week after he was god awful last week? Or arguably why they would start Pennington or Henne? or why they have Ginn as the no 1 receiver? or why they have Carpenter kicking off? (Did you not see the technique from Porter during Game 1 warmups?

I don't buy the best player line. Allen hits people, gets interceptions, and knocks balls down. What have the other safeties shown that suggest they are better than him?

Mando,

I have your back and I know you were referencing the bible in your retort...or The Departed. Thank you as always for listening to the fans and trying to give us the inside scoop on what we find important/questionable.

We need secondary help badly!!!!! This isnt funny anymore. i cant imagine what welker and moss are saying in the film room. If this is ever a time to test cassel's passing skills this is the game. Mando i know its hard to bring up any topic about the miami Dolphins but this is a good one, because everyone knows this is the worst secondary in the NFL right now. The Brett Favre jump ball was a sign of things to come. I mean damn didnt Randy Moss play jump ball with this secondary last year. We need to let Jason Allen play I mean hell if we started Cammeron Worrell last year

Please. Is it so difficult to accept that this season was about the o-line and d line acquistions ? Next season we will be drafting and brining in free agent WR's and Db,s. I know we could have spent the 4th rounder on Manningham for example, teaming him up with Henne, or at least a young S to push the jokes we have at the moment. Allen is about as bad as Crocker, but at least has the size to tackle the larger recievers. Remember last season Allen was beaten out by Cameron Worrell, now if that wasn't enough motivation to get your act together then I don't know what is ?? Allen is just plain DUMB folks, its not his fault, but you hear him in interviews and its like an intro to Sesame Street.

Its going to be another long season, but it will get better, we have Henne.

Ted Ginn must return punts and kickoffs
Ted Ginn must return punts and kickoffs
Ted Ginn must return punts and kickoffs

If I say it three times maybe somebody will listen.

Oh yeah Boz who is Henne gonna throw too? It better be Micheal Crab Tree. The Dolphins will have the #2 pick next year. Knowing the trifecta they will pick a lineman offense or Defense it doesnt matter. Then they will preach running the ball and clock management again.

Olivadotti, Henne has to work with what he has for the moment. Because he has a gun for an arm he can sling it into tighter coverages, than Penny, who has a much slower delivery with much less velocity on the ball. Henne will put it to Ronnie, Ginn, Fasano, Camarillo, Bess and Martin. Outside of that its wait till next year. Crabtree may be the the best WR prospect, but I still think the Defensive backfield may mean trading down for more picks, looking at getting a Safety who can cover and tackle and a WR with size and speed. A lot to ask for especially when you consider our last 6 years of draft caliber !!!

Henne is no Beck

Last year the Dolphins had 5 head coaches on the staff. CaMORON, Robiskie, Capers, Mularkey and Parcells when he joined the office. And no one knew what the hell they were doing. The Miami Dolphins franchise as a whole is like the twilight zone. Coaches go in smart, and once they step into Dolphins gear, they're retarded. Same with the players. Good players check in, but they don't check out. Once they arrive, they instantly suck. NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO DRAFT IN THIS FRANCHISE! NO ONE CAN GO AFTER THE RIGHT FREE AGENTS! Bill Parcells can, but like I said, he's wearing aqua now, so he might be a dumbass now. It happens. Billy and Tony think they're plays and style is gonna work in Miami, but that'll only work if they bring ALL of their Dallas players with them. Yea if i had Romo and T.O. then i might run 2 STRAIGHT PASS PLAYS from the 2 yard line against the JETS. This has everything to do with Jason Allen, because this team will thinks everything they do is right, no matter who's in charge. He was a horrible draft choice, as was Eddie Moore, another screw up, And Jamar Fletcher! The list is long but distinguished. Cut your losses and trash the guy, and have the guts to trade a 2nd round pick for an established corner or safety, like all the great teams do.

I agree with Ry18. The aquistion of Moss and Owens, transformed them into much better offensive teams. Bolden would be traded for the skins second round pick with Ginn and Hagan I'd take it. He could play down here for another 8-9 seasons, give us a gamebreaker !!! the first of this kind since.... Irving Fryar.

DOES ANYBODY THINK THAT TED GINN COULD BE A BETTER DEFENSIVE BACK THAN RECIEVER?

Armando-

Thanks for the follow-up regarding Jason Allen.

The next player I would like to hear more about is Samson Satele. For a rookie, he seemingly had a relatively monster year last year- drawing high remarks from everyone, including Parcells.

However, this year, IIRC, he has been blamed for giving up a couple sacks and not really playing as well as last year.

Is this true, or a function of the line as a whole group and not yet coming together?

Thanks,

Matt in NC

Hey Ry86 its ok I just had dinner with William Clay Ford jr of the Ford family and he said He would give us the right to talk to Matt Millen for Beck and some compensatory draft picks in 09. Thats a sweet deal

Please understand what I am about to write is not directed at everyone...just the whiners.

IT'S NOT ABOUT THIS SEASON...NEVER HAS BEEN...NOT EVEN WHEN THEY WENT 3-1 IN THE PRESEASON....THIS TEAM WAS IN SHAMBLES AND NEEDED A COMPLETE ROSTER OVERHAUL THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO IN ONE OFFSEASON. SHUT UP, BE A FAN, AND QUIT WITH YOUR MORONIC REMARKS ABOUT COACHES AND PLAYERS THAT YOU THINK MAKE YOU SEEM FUNNY....TRUE FANS DONT WISH TO SIFT THRU YOUR GARBAGE TO FIND THE FEW POSTS THAT HAVE INTELLIGENT INPUT.

That being said, I am very concerned with the struggles of Satele, Ginn, and Jason Allen. I thought at least two of them would blossom this year(still can I suppose) into great players. But Satele has disappointed me the most....he had a horrible game in Arizona in my opinion. Armando, any input or opinion as to what I saw or what I thought I saw?

It seems to me that this coaching staff is still in pre-season mode trying to learn more about their players. It is bound to settle down at some point and this team will start to take off.

I say keep Jason Allen on the sideline. He seems to get burned less there.

Tin to answer your question; the only reason he was starting was because we lost like 5 dbs to injury. Remember that we had to sign 2 dbs who were sitting at home just so we could field enough guys? I don't think they believe Crocker to be the best and imo it has more to do with Hills progress with the injury. They played Cobbs so much because they were worried about re-injuring Browns knee. If you remember Sparano came right out and told us they would "ease Ronnie back into the lineup". His knee was probably a bit stiff but in true Parcells fashion you don't speak of these things out loud. The Ike thing I have no clue about because I am not at practice every day evaluating these guys. How would anyone of us know who is doing better right now? Have you seen Mathis play or practice? Penny over Henne is obvious in that they don't want to break Henne before he gets going here. This is a philosophy that has been used all over the NFL by some hall of fame coaches so I don't know what the confusion is on this one. Anyway, I tend to trust the people in charge to make the football decisions. I am not at practice and only get to watch the games on tv. I would have to say that Parcells,Ireland, and Sparano know a hell of a lot more about these players than we do. Oh yeah and the Ginn thing is crazy. You tell me what they should do with these receivers, they're awful and Tony is trying every combination he can to get something going here. You can't fault him for that. Good back and forth today Tin! At least we can keep the season interesting with some healthy debates.
