Stay tuned for Ronnie Brown the passer

The Wildcat offense is seriously freaking the NFL out. Thursday, Dan Marino was at the Dolphins training facility to do a story for the CBS pregame show which will feature the Dolphins' recent success and their Wildcat offense.

Friday, ESPN is sending Cris Carter to the facility to do pretty much the same story. It's Wildcat this and Wildcat that on the pregame shows Sunday.

On Showtime's Inside the NFL this week, former Raiders and Bucs defensive lineman Warren Sapp went off on the Dolphins because of the Wildcat offense. He basically said he was offended by Miami's use of the offense.

"This is disrespectful to all defenses," Sapp said during the show's round table discussion. "It's disrespectful. You're taking the best player in the game, the quarterback, and you're putting him out wide, outside the numbers and you put the running back in the back. How the hell you going to pass the ball?"

A couple of things, fellas and ladies: Ronnie Brown can pass the ball. And he's getting more proficient at it because he's been doing it more in practice.

I've been told the Dolphins have been working more with Brown throwing out of the Wildcat formation this week. In fact, when the team is warming up in individual drills, Brown takes some repetitions with the other quarterbacks.

And then, obviously, he throws the ball when the Dolphins are working on pass plays out of Wildcat in practice. So look for that to show up this week against Houston.

And there is the irony in all this.

Sapp, who obviously doesn't know Brown already threw a TD pass out of the formation against New England, will have to eat his words if Brown starts slingin' it more often. And if it happens in Houston, it will come at the same venue where Brown infamously had a pass batted on a potential game-tying two-point conversion try two seasons ago.

Can hardly wait.

Excellent information. Mando, wondering how you get this stuff about practice when the time is limited to you media guys? Players telling you stuff on the side?

Great Job Mando!!!

Who the hell cares what Sapp thinks. He is an ignorant pot hot. Disrespectful he calls it. How disrespectful is it for Sapp to be spending most of his life inside Mons Venus in Tampa? I tell you I hate when scum bags like Sapp and Michael Irvin become commentators. They suck at it. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago Sapp through out some ugly and untrue comments about Urban Meyer from UF because they beat his Canes? It is one thing to have a big mouth but it is much worse if your always wrong like he is.

Sapp needs to go eat a donut and ask Jason Taylor for a tango. The offense has the right to do whatever the hell they want to do as long as it is in the scope of the rules. Sapp didn't say squat when the Fins were having their arses handed to them week end and week out. Offenses have to continue to try new things or in this case old things to stay ahead of increasingly bigger and faster defenses. If the defenses don't want to be "disrespected", figure out a way to stop it. What a moron.

Sapp/Irvin/Emmitt Smith/Lt (when he opens his pie hole)...generally, great ex-players...that should now be paid to SHUT UP.

How stupid do they think the average viewers are?

Teams are scared of the wildcat. Teams have tried contacting Houston Nutt for information on how to stop that formation. The only problem is that Nutt is not giving away that information. He is good friend with our QB coach and has told other teams he is a Dolphins fan this year and will not be giving away any secrets.

I would like to see Ginn in the QB spot to see what he can do. As well as pulling Penny and putting in another WR, RB, or TE to add another layer of options.

Everyone of those players you named happen to be african american... do you perhaps have some "subconsious" issues Chris?

Just win baby.lol

"Everyone of those players you named happen to be african american... do you perhaps have some "subconsious" issues Chris?"

I doubt it - they suck. They could learn a thing or two from Deion. Flashy - but at least he has a clue what is coming out of his mouth before he says it.

Pretty funny where the offense is at now for this upcoming game, considering our last game against Houston saw us run a pathetic halfback pass attempt on a critical two-point attempt.

Warren Sapp is an ignorant whale..nobody should really even take the time to debate anything he has to say, and it's utterly amazing that a network hired him to be a commentator.

....Could it be a leak by the team to get Houston spending too much time preparing for Ronnie the passer? Would be a good move - confuse them by not doing the confusing thing which was supposed to confuse them in the first place.

That really is confusing.

WildFin offense! Get it right!

Roll over and play dead Dolphins, Sapp doesn't like the way you win. He likes chop blocks and cheap shots and trash talking.

Thanks for the post Mando. I am glad to see that this version of the Dolphins is actually making other teams think.

ITS JUST HARD FOR OTHER TEAMS TO ACCEPT THAT THE WORST TEAM FROM LAST YEAR WITH THE WORST RECORD IN NFL HISTORY CAN HAVE THE WHOLE LEAGUE SCRAMBLING TO PREPARE FOR US MORE THAN THEY WOULD A TEAM LIKE THE PATRIOTS. AND IM SURPRISED THAT SAPP OUT OF ALL PEOPLE WOULD TALK BAD ABOUT MIAMI BEING THAT HE'S FROM HERE AND CAME OUT OF THE U.

THE GAME OF FOOTBALL IS ABOUT GAMEPLANNING AND CREATING MISMATCHES. THE DOLPHINS HAVE BEEN DOIN BOTH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE NFL IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS. THE WILD CAT OFFENCE FORCES MISMATCHES BECAUSE THE D DOESNT KNOW WATS COMING. YOU CAN RUN SO MANY DIFFERENT PLAYS OUT OF THE FORMATION THAT U CAN LINE UP IN IT 30 TIMES IN A ROW AND THE D STILL WOULD BE ON EDGE BECAUSE IT COULD BE

(1) A DIRECT UP THE MIDDLE RUN BY BROWN
(2) A HAND OFF TO RICKY ON THE MOVE
(3) A REVERSE FROM RICKY TAKING THE HAND OFF THEN GIVING IT TO GINN COMING FROM THE OTHER SIDE.
(4) A DECISIVE PASS FROM A SCRAMLING BROWN WHO DEMANDS THE SECONDARY TO BITE
(5) A DECISIVE PASS FROM RICKY IF HE TAKES A BACKWARDS PITCH FROM BROWN INSTEAD OF A DIRECT HAND OFF

(6) (AND THIS ONE I MADE UP MYSELF) AFTER THE BALL IS SNAPPED TO BROWN, PENNINGTON DROPS BACK FURTHER THAN BROWN SO HE CAN GET THE BALL FROM A LATERAL AND NOW WE HAVE THE BALL IN THE REAL QB'S HANDS, AND NOW BROWN BECOMES A RECIEVER THAT THE DEFENCE WASNT COUNTING ON. SEND GINN WITH HIS BLAZING SPEED DEEP(JUST IN CASE THE D GETS CONFUSED ENOUGH TO MISS HIM). SEND BROWN OUT ON A FLAT WHO SHOULD END UP 5 YARDS BELOW RICKY COMING TO THE SAME SIDE ON A TEN TARD DRAG, AND EITHER LEAVE FASANO TO BLOCK OR HAVE HIM BLOCK THEN LOOK TO CATCH A PASS IF OPEN

how about ronny handing off to ricky running to the side chad is on and ricky latteraling to chad that throws a bomb to ginn,or ricky if everything isn't right just keeping it and running.
eat that sapp.

Typical UM scum. One and done for him as a so called commentator.

First off, unless you watched Sapp and understand what he was saying then just zip it. He wasn't bagging on us. He was saying as defense and being defensive minded, they take it as being disrespected. Because we are basically saying, We Aint passing, we are running it right down your throat. To a defensive player, they feel disrespected. It's just the mentality of a defensive player. They will all tell you, that getting ran on successfully is the worst feeling for a defender and when you don't even attempt to disguise it, it's even worse. It wasn't a knock on us, chill out.

-TIM-

good one. i didnt even think of that

Sapp has always been a coward and a turd. How this fat man is getting these jobs is beyound me.To bad his brain isn't as big as his belly and mouth. Why would you put a sweaty fat man on dancing with the no bodys/has been's. I'm waiting for sapp head to blind side one of those other gay dancers.

chris s

yo chris thats like saying the running backs should be mad a defence who always stack 8 in the box and dont allow them to run the rock. i dont see emmit smith on the show saying tat defences should all run normal 4-3, 0r 3-4 defences and take the running game like a man. once again its about out smarting the other team as well as out playing them. maybe we should bann reverses an fake punts and fake field goals to. man up and just defend it sapp. i use to be a fan of yours

I like Ronnie rolling with Ricky to the same side as Rick'y motion. As the defenses will start to stay at home, one opportunity will be the shuffle pass from Ronnie to ricky on the roll out. The defensive ends should blow past Ricky for ronnie and ronnie would just shuffle the ball right past them to Ricky. Also plan something to take advantage of the corner blitz as I believe we'll see it from Chad's corner.

A lot of players in the NFL always talk about respect, the only time respect is given in football is before the whistle blows once that whistle blows to start the game all that respect talk is thrown out, its now about winning. So how can Sapp even talk about respect in the game, when he played he gave very little, its about winning by any means. The Dolphins found a way to win and now the NFL has to stop it.

Great stuff Mando. Ill tell ya I have always thought, and not to insult peoples intelligence, that the best ex-players to go into broadcasting are the Qbs and generally guys who themselves are students of the game. Sapp was never and will never be a student of the game. Same with Irvin, Deon, Emmit, LT, Schlereth, and so on. These guys are just characters, great football PLAYERS yes, and thats all they are on these NFL shows CHARACTERS.

Its shovel pass, Steve....Jeeze.

Steve you hit it on the head with the corner blitz from the QB side. A quick lateral back to Pennington (past the blitz) and he can run or pass.

Just goes to show you how much Sapp knows calling Chad Pennington the best player on field. What a laugh. Isn't the object to get the ball in the best players hands? Mission accomplished.

Who cares what Sapp says? How long has it been since there was this much excitement about the Dolphins? THIS IS FANTASTIC! Thank you to coaching staff for having the onions to try something different.

Great Armando, thanks for going public with what Miami is working on in practice before a game. Did you email this story to Houston?

As for Sapp, I don't even understand his point.

Just read the story about Penne getting stronger and wondering, dang how weak would his throws be if he hadn't dedicated himself to getting stronger. He already short hops 15 yard outs. Would he even be able to make those throws? He had to redo his mechanics and get stronger, how freakin weak was his arm last year?

Does the team need motivation this week???

If so, here it is...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/features/talent

Not a SINGLE talking sock-puppet at ESPN thinks our team can beat the Texans this weekend!

Armando--nice inside info. I'm with Mr. Bungle on this one. Did the Phins send a Top Secret binder to the Texans? This information should give them another dandruff to scratch.

Any word on the trading deadline? Thanks!

Go Phins!!!

So Mr Sapp... is it disrespectful to offenses when defenses Zone blitz.. how dare they put a 300lb back in coverage, thats not what they are best at, and how dare they send a CB on a blitz when he gets paid to cover receivers ..

Wonder how long he lasts in the studio.. shocking comment really.

This is off topic, but i read the espn's analysysts picks. Not ONE of them picked miami to win.... Not even Mortenson who was the only one to pick us over the Chargers last week. I hope we continue to fly under the radar and upset.

Yet another HYPED BUBBLE.

The Dolphins should keep the Wildcat limited, make other teams waste time practicing for it but use it on a limited basis.

Just because htey havent ran into any real resistance yet, this thing will blow up in their faces if they overuse Ronnie Brown as a QB and Pennington at wideout.

Sparano must be loving it though, its a great distraction and gives the DOlhpins confidence.

stupid sapp. he sounds like the generals of the opposing armies that the young Napoleon Bonaparte was thrashing - "fight by the rules we have fought by for years; what are you doing splitting your armies and attcking our flank!"

Sorry folks, although I don't think very highly of Warren Sapp his point should be well taken. What he is saying is, this shouldn't be very hard to defend because you have taken the QB out from under center and basically told the defense you intend to run.

I don't think he is knocking the Dolphins as much as he is knocking the teams that have not been able to stop the WildFin. The offense renders itself one dimensional as soon as Ronnie lines up at QB. What better way to combat that then to let slip a little subterfuge saying Ronnie has been practicing throwing. Given Pennington’s well documented fragility teams cannot respect him as a legitimate threat at WR. So here comes a little more subterfuge about Pennington having this amazing offseason workout program.

If I’m a defensive coordinator I don’t buy any of it. As soon as I see the WildFin I go 4-3 with the line shifted toward the unbalanced side. I pull the corner up on Pennington right in his face. As soon as the ball is snapped I knock Pennington on his backside and immediately bring the corner 3 yards across the line moving in. The outside line backer on the unbalanced side speed rushes to occupy Jake Long and disrupt the pulling guard. The two linebackers on the weak side MUST NOT over pursue to protect the cutback. Then man on man coverage with the free safety coming on a run blitz or playing spy on Ronnie.

But the beauty of it from our standpoint is we have forced the defense to game plan around the WildFin instead of working on their base defense, which will be needed against 80% of our offense. And Mr. Sapp has just played right into it because here he is calling out the manhood of the defenses that have played against us. They want to stop the WildFin so badly they forget about the rest of the offense. We have teams on their heels before we even step on the field. Great coaching, I love it!

I think the Wildcat Formation's biggest fans should be Tebow's bankers. If this formation remains succesful throughout the season Tebow's stock will surely rise in the draft as other teams look to implement it, and what better player to take the sanp out fo the Wildcat than Tebow.

Ka-Ching!

Great, the media now paying attention and doing sotries on us.

GURANTEED LOSS ON SUNDAY.

I've seen and responded to Ronnie Brown critisim throughout his Tenure in Miami. My point of Reference is being a former alumnus of the Tennessee Volunteers. Ronnie Brown destroyed us single handed when he played at Auburn. Caddilac got his share, but it was Ronnie who made Caddilac better not the other way around. What player would you trade Ronnie for now straight up,if the answer is none (excluding Manning or Brady). Then that puts Brown in rarified air especially if he plays all 16 games. FYI: Ronnie was selected his HS senior year to the PrepStar All-America team, gained 1900 yards, on the ground and 348 through the air(sound Familor). My Vols recruited him heavily but alas Cartersville Ga is primarily Auburn, Alabama territory. GO RONNIE! Darren Mcfadden, Reggie Bush WHO? Alex Smith was selected ahead of him and Braylon Edwards behind him, then Cedric Benson, Caddilac and Pacman. The ballot is in we won the draft, Ronnie Brown bashers go home. SteFin

Very good point on Tebow Stock rising with the wildcat formation. Next question Does Tebow come out this year? Does NFL allow Juniors? I think yes but don't truly know the rule.

They should rename it the split fin or whale tail?

Yeah, Sapp's a moron...the guy knows nothing about our use of it as evidenced by the garbage he regurgitated during the round table discussion. I'll enjoy the Wildcat excitement while it lasts...I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before teams find a way to stop it.

STOP IT! Adjust your defense to stop it. Disrespectful? ROFLMAO!! This is getting ridiculous and reminds me of the english army when confronted with guerrilla tactics they had never seen before. The english complained, because they were getting beat, that the opposing army was not fighting like gentlemen and asked them to stop! "Why aren't you guys lining up in a row so that our guys can shoot you"? That's what Sapp is saying," why aren't they lining up normally so everyone knows what they're doing waaaahhhhhh". STOP IT. Stop the whining and figure it out. Someone will, maybe even the Texans, but until then stop complaining because it makes you look like a sore loser and a big baby.

Robert, read your post and it's right on, that's exactly what I was saying!

Anyone knocking on Sapp's door to be a coach? Didn't think so. It is just power-o. He must know more than Billicheck and Norv.

NFL teams don't want their QBs running around taking hits. Ronnie Brown is a RB and is used to contact on every play. I don't think the team that drafts Tebow is going to have him running the Wildcat very often. If they do LBs will be licking their chops for a chance to blow up the QB.

I think the Wildcat will always be successful as long as they execute it. It still requires people to block and tackle, and the RB has to pick the right hole.

I understand why Chad lines up as receiver; so the defense doesn't know when we are going to run the Wildcat, however, we could try to slip Chad off the field and add another reciever in his place considering Brown supposedly has an arm. I think if the dolphins try this every once in awhile this would thoroughly confuse the defense.

I find myself (once again) in agreement with NYScott. Quit your whining and STOP IT! So far, The WildFin has been quite effective, and other teams are beginning to use it as well.

I also like all the information flying around. When other pro teams are calling the college coach trying to figure out how to stop it...you know you've got something good! For the time being, at least.

Armando - given that you are a writer for the Miami Dolphins, why on Earth would you divulge the fact that the Fins might employ passes by Ronnie out of the Wildcar this week against Houston because they have been practicing it? Why allow Houston, who may be reading these blogs, to have a heads-up?

R u kidding me, disrespectful to all defenses. SAPP does not know what he is talking about. DEFs should prepare for it and try to stop it. It is no different than running a reverse, handing the ball of to RB. They just cant stop our weapons, im loving it, because DEFs do not know who will get the ball. They act like we run this play everydown, and not to mention CHAD has a decent game throwing the ball last game. Thats all we need, we play to WIN the game! ......Herm Edwards

Please cut the following players:

Pennington
Beck
Ginn

Thank you!

Man, Mondo still has a job? the garbage that spews from your mouth drives me nuts...no skill please run downhill with scissors

SAPP SHUT UP AND STOP HATEING MAN. I DON'T RECALL YOU DOING ANYTHING IN LA WAIT, IN TAMPA AT THAT. THAT'S WHY CHUKY (GRUDEN) RAN YOUR **S OUT OF THERE. YOU SEE, YOUR MOUTH KEEPS RUNNING AND NOTHING OF IMPORTANT COMES OUT. STOP HATEING YOU MR. "DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT". OH YEAH, GET SOME CHAPSTICK OR SOMETHING MAN YOUR LIPS IS DRY AS HELL WHEN YOU'RE ON TV. LOOKS LIKE YOU ON THAT SH*T.

Mando,

Ok wildcat works,,, how about using the texas two-step that Vince Young made famously in his career in Texas with ronnie brown at QB and ricky at RB.... that could also tear defenses apart in the nfl! Why doesnt the nfl run the formations that high school and college use,, not even new england super bowl defense couldnt stop it

The words disrespect or offended shouldnt even come out of Sapps mouth. I used to work at a Restaurant in Tampa near Raymond James and he is one of the most direspectful pricks I have ever come across EVER! Who cares what he thinks. Anyway, teams all over the league are trying to duplicate it and they cant so there must be some validity to it. The wildcat is not the only reason we are winning games. Its qb efficiency and defense as well. Defenses constantly do things to confuse the offense. Offense cant have more than one guy in motion at a time so if they have the personnel to use something like the wildcat to confuse the defense than so be it.

Wow!
