Dolphins beat Raiders 17-15 to improve to 6-4

It was closer than anyone expected. And the special teams, terrible as they have been this year, tried to give this one away.

But when it was over the Dolphins won on a 38-yard field goal by rookie Dan Carpenter.

It was a good day for the defense, which kept Oakland's offense out of the end zone all four quarters, extending that group's scoreless string to 13 consecutive quarters. The offense, meanwhile, sputtered most of the day although it put together that final, last-gasp drive that resulted in the the winning FG.

Raiders quarterback JarMarcus Russell had a tough day completing 15 of 22 passes for 156 yards and was sacked four times. But after the game, in a heart-rending moment, Russell was seen crying in the locker room because apparently he was given the news of a passing in his family. No more details are available and Russell has not talked.

Anyway, the Dolphins are in second place in the AFC East -- ahead of the 6-4 New England Patriots, which they beat earlier this year. The Jets are in first place at 7-3.

So what are your thoughts?

Whew! After last year, I'll take ANY kind of win, but have to play better than that to beat the Pats next week.

the last two wins have been ugly but I'll take them. Last year's team would have lost both games...

Whew!

Seriously, this is MORE than I expected from this team this year. I was initially opposed to bringing on Parcells, but the results are what they are.

Hats off!

And a win is a win, and as ugly as these past two have been, it allows the coaches to yell at the players and keep them focused and not overconfident.

This season has definitely been a success...although we're struggling to beat teams vastly inferior to ours, I think we need to remember where we were last year and not be so demanding of the Fins...myself included. We may still be in the playoff picture, but let's not kid ourselves, we won't make it past the first round if we continue to play the way we have the past couple of weeks.

We're in a wildcard spot as of today.

The special teams are a problem. Also, whenever we get a lead our offense goes conservative. We don't build upon that lead. But at least it's a win! Not to many people thought we would have a over 500 season at this point.

A win is a win no matter how ugly.Good teams win games like this.

It sure didn't feel like a win but the score says that it is. So I'll take it. Still better to be on the winning side than on the losing side.

Pennington needs to be more confident and throw the ball. He´s got the power.

Last time i checked we are not the defending superbowl champs! I will gladly take any! Win and be happy bout it..this team has shown heart in the 4th all year kudos to ginn for that big td and even bigger 4th down play

I have full faith this organization is going to put together a good group of personnel that can be a legitimate contender in the future...

but I fear it won't matter with this cowardly coaching that brings back all sorts of Wannstedt nightmares.

These last two wins against horrible teams does not bring any encouragement.

What is the range on Dan Carpenter's longest kick? Wouldn't it have been better to try, and if he missed at least give the D a chance to stop them. They had been all day long, holding them to field goals. They know our ST suck.

You see, that Anonymous, more people who understand that coaching took a little back-slide this game to join ST in the Dog house.

Remember the old adage, 'On any Given Sunday'. THe Raiders brought their A game and we got sloppy at the end. The Patriots is a must win divisional game for us. This will really show us what we have, that is if we dont know already, that we are a group of overachieving battlers, with sprinkles of young talent, combined with some poor bottom of the roster gargabe , held together by a Decent QB, driven by a coaching hardman, produced by Bill Parcells.

great win we will destroy the patsies next week we are in a position to make the playoff i believe we will be coached as well as play with a little more intensity! GO PHINS!!!!!!

I thought "our" special team was with us, not against us!!
Why dont they fire the special team coach!!!

See, Anonymous, more people who understand how coaching took a back-slide to join speacial teams in the doghouse.

If the season ended today we'd be playing the Titans in the first round and getting destroyed.

I can not remember the last time a saw a Special Teams unit so inept. I could put a group of kindergardeners together to gang tackle better than the SP is now. THIS will do us in with the better teams. Fix or we are dead!

Fish boy

that was an ugly win.but ill take it.we need to beat the patsies.there gonna be looking 4 revenge.next game lets play to win.convert on 3rd downs and keep scoring.

it's a win. lot of work to do, should be a great game next Sunday I will be flying down hope the crowd and the team are fired up GO DOLPHINS

I tell you what though. I would feel better about that match-up because we would not be expected to win. I have not felt nearly a nervous when we played NE, SD (even though that now may have been an overated game), Denver, Buffalo...actually, Buffalo made me nervous because I worried about Roscoe and Lee on Special teams.

Cowardly coaching?????

Oh, you must have meant when the went for it on 4th and 4-5 instead of trying a 52 yard field goal at the two minute warning when, if they don't pick it up, it's game over most likely!!

You're right - that's cowardly

Like last week, hey, a win is a win is a win is a win. Especially after last year. At some season in the future, maybe I'll quibble about how we win. But for now, all I care about is winning. One thing - the Raider defense is no joke! Thankfully, there offsens is! Frankly, the defense we faced today is probably the second best we've faced all season (B-more first).

We're 6-4, in position to make the playoffs. Do you believe in Miracles?

Chad is a lock for this teams MVP. He is clearly the general out there on the field and has now had a huge drive late in each of the last 4 games. Ginn improves weekly and will see more plays each week as he shows what he can do with the ball in his hands. Special teams coverage is soooo bad that high school teams could score on us. Both of our kickers need to work on strategic kicking, and fields especially needs to work on corner kicks. Would really like to see the Fins get a kickoff specialist, but ultimately the big question is why the hell hasnt Bill fired John Bonamego?

COWARDLY COACHING - as in going into a shell and not trying to move the chains... going for it on 4th down when LOSING late in the game to a crap team does not refute COWARDLY.

COWARDLY against the Seahawks. COWARDLY against the Texans, and that time it burned them.

Wanny returns - don't make mistakes, don't be aggressive, and hope defense takes care of it... it was crap then, and its crap now.

ziggy i just read a comment from you stating taht this is the same old dolphins team..... Amazing how fast your head turns around

Brandon,

If the season ended today we wouldn't play the Titans--they would have a first-round bye, along with the Jets. Looks like we'd have a first round game against either the Steelers or Denver.

Will have massive heart attack if every game like this, but I will take a win anyday. Go phins!

"This is what Parcells expects as well. There is no reason for us to feel good about a close game against Oakland, when we beat Denver, NE, and the Chargers."

I noticed this comment too.. What a fool! if he woulda read after last weeks gm he woulda saw that Bill Parcells came down to Chad Pennington after the game and told him "Enjoy every win!" Come on PT do your homework, we were 1-15 last year and this was a crucial game for us.. It was a perfect trap gm and we passed... How can you not enjoy every win by the dolphins????

What a pus bucket... Cowardly coaches ? Did you not see the 4th and 5 call to move into beter FG range? Was your fat wife standing in front of the tube bareassed hoping you could get it up ? What a MORON !

For some wierd reason this team plays to the level of the opponent, good or bad. Once they felt the taste of their first victory against the pats this has been the M.O. Guys don't be so negative. The pats really are not that good. Their O-Line is a sieve and just like in the first game the D-Line should have a great game. If the coaches that a close look at Cassel on tape you will see his tendency is to thrown an aimed ball, and 9 times out of 10 to his right side. In addition he likes to tuck and run. Have someone spying that play and he can be had again. Keep the faith, as the Jets have the Titans next week and two trips to the west coast. We all know what happened the last time they traveled west to face Oakland.

chase it is amazing how quick my head turns around, but at the time of the comment it was the same ole Dolphins team. Im not here to rah rah but merely point out the facts. Special teams is awful and almost cost us the game, this was a poorly coached game on the playcalling side of things and of course special teams was terrible on coverage yet again. We should be happy becasue a win is a win is a win, but with everyone talking playoffs they need to improve on things like special teams.

Well i think that we did a good job to get that win.. But you no whats funny. I come back on here and read and see everyone saying oh what agreat job. Is that the same people that was saying Bill Parcell was a shitty coach and we will always suck.. Kudos TO Super BIll

Should they starting kicking the ball out of bounds to avoid the other team from returning it for big yardage

Well, I for one expected this close outcome. I predicted it was a major trap game. The Vegas odds were ridiculous, the pundits were not taking the Raiders seriously, and no amount of alarm on the part of Coach Soprano was registering with the players. We definitely were looking ahead to the Patriots game. There is no holy excuse for this pathetic performance. And Parcells, please fire Anderson off special teams. He continues to make mental mistakes, costing us penalties and yard position!

The Pats are a better team than when we played them earlier, despite losing Adalius and Rodney, for one reason. Matt Cassell. He's matured. This will not be an easy game for the Fins.

I predict they lose but hope like hell I'm wrong.

On punts that can pin teams deep, yes we should kick out of bounds. Not on kickoffs but definately on certain punting scenarios

The defense is kick'n a** & tak'n names. Jr is developing into a very good WR before our eyes.Hopefully someone is gonna fix the ST coverage units. 6-4 is way better than the 4-12 the ( experts ) were predicting.

A win is a win, no matter how ugly it is.

But if this team expects to make a splash going down the stretch here, they need to adjust play calling in the red zone and on third downs. The Dolphins had two opportunities to put the Raiders away by sustaining drives. On two key third downs, they throw underneath into coverage, or run a draw.

You cannot squander opportunities to score points in this league. If you have a 3rd & 5, you take a a shot for the first down.

And don't even get me started with special teams.

We wouldn't be in the playoffs. We are the 7th seed behind Baltimore and Indy.

And Armando, how is nearly 400 yards of offense equate to "sputtering".

I just want to make this point...
Everyone keeps referring to the reverse to ginn TD as a trick play. I ask how so? The reverse is not a trick play. It is simply a misderection play that people run when the other team is overpursuing.
The reverse is easy enough to stop if you simply stay in your gap and not over commit. If you watched the raiders defense on that play the DE and the OLB both completely sold out and overpursued the fake to the right which left a HUGE hole for ted ginn. With his speed noone is going to catch him.

Special teams are a disaster but I am still so buzzed that we are 6-4. This was meant to be a re-building year but here we are hosting the Pats next week with a chance to go 7 and 4. & and 4 folks, think how unlikely that was in the depths of last year. Be great if we made the playoffs but even if we dont its great to be in the mix again. Its been too long.

The only thing cowardly is some know nothing arm chair QB hiding behind his computer calling OUR coach a coward. The funny thing is that if you told any one of these players that their coach is cowardly they would bite your head off. This team was pegged to win 4 games this year and they have already won 6. They could possibly be going to the playoffs and THAT IS ALL BECAUSE OF COACHING because it's certainly not about the overwhelming amount of talent we have on this team. We have a group of decent players who have been coached UP. Tony Sparano is the best damn coach this team has had since Don Shula and is already being seriously considered for coach of the year honors. Anyone that fails to see that as a reality needs their head examined. NYScott

I'll bite your head off NYScott! Jeffrey Dahmer only lived 2 hours from my house!

Wow i would hate to see the reaction if we lost! Do some of u realize we are 6-2 in our last 8 gms coming of a 1-15 season...cowardly coaching? Gimme a break u wouldnt know real coaching if it smacked u in the face..these guys are tough smart inovative and dedicated its sum of u that r delusional n cowardly

The Beef Sez" 6 AND 4 AND 1 GAME OUT OF 1ST,WHAT R U LOSERS BITCHING ABOUT? LAST YEAR U WERE 0 AND 10 THIS TIME LAST YEAR.QUIT UR BITCHING AND THANK GOD U DONT LIVE IN DETRIOT,THE BEEFSTER HATES WIENERS SO QUIT UR WIENING

The Beef Sez"NY SCOTT, THE BEEFSTER LIKES UR COMMENT.,NOW GO GET ME A COLD BEER"

our special teams reaaaallllllly suck. BAD!

???

All of this cowardly coaching chat makes no sense. We were winning the game when we elected to punt on 4th down, in a game where the defense had not yielded a td. We were out of reasonable field goal range and 99 times outta 100 you punt that ball. Special Teams needs tons of help and I was a lil dissapointed with some of the 1st down calls but to call it cowardly coaching is flat out wrong.

Bonamego should be canned!

Yikes Chase, that's pretty scary. Good thing you never met up with him. That was one sick s.o.b.
