An uneasy feeling: Parcells, Ross and Huizenga

This morning I am feeling uneasy so I need to share with you the reason for my discomfort. No, it's not stomach related you jokers.

As you probably have read by now, Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga said Sunday afternoon he had spoken with Football Czar Bill Parcells and Parcells told him he was staying with the Dolphins. This is my column on the issue that appeared in today's Miami Herald.

And this is the words right from Huizenga's mouth: "Bill is going to stay. He told me the day before yesterday [Friday] he was going to stay."

So case closed right?

I wasn't satisfied. So when I saw incoming owner Stephen Ross immediately after speaking with Huizenga, I decided to ask Ross about the Parcells matter.

"My gut tells me he'll stay," Ross told me. "I certainly want him. And I understand what he wants. I think he deserves all the credit. Everyone is expecting and wanting him to come back. I don't think he could find a more welcome home."

Guess what? I'm still not satisfied. And that's where my uneasy feeling comes from.

The fact is Parcells has not said anything on the matter. The fact is Ross confirmed he and Parcells have not hashed out the issue from a contract standpoint. The fact is no meeting is set between Ross and Parcells to do so.

And then there is my personal skepticism I have to deal with. You see, during my five billion years covering the Dolphins as a backup beat writer, beat writer and columnist, I've heard people say a lot of things. And then I've seen them do another.

Tim Robbie told me to my face he didn't need to sell the team for estate tax purposes. And six months later the team was sold.

I remember witnessing Jimmy Johnson em-effing colleague Jason Cole at least 12 times (There were more em-effs but I stopped counting after 12) because Cole wrote Johnson was taking it easier and slowing down prior to the 1999 season. Johnson insisted he still had the same fire in his belly he always had -- which, of course, it was proven later he didn't.

After Huizenga hired Parcells in December 2007, I asked the owner what the move meant for Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller. "Cam and Randy are secure," he answered. You know the rest of that tale.

Huizenga also told me in August of 2007 that Cameron promised him the team was going to the playoffs.

And, yes, I was there when Nick Saban uttered the phrase, "I will not be the Alabama coach."

So I've learned not to simply accept somebody's word as the Gospel truth.

In this case, I'm puzzled by the NFL Network report of Ross's flirtation with former Chiefs president Carl Peterson. Seriously, Carl Peterson?

I'm curious that Ross didn't squash the Parcells issue by saying something like, "I will do whatever I need to do to keep him." Don't get me wrong, Ross said all the right things. But he didn't exactly slam the door on the possibility Parcells might not be back.

Finally, it was interesting to me that when I asked Huizenga whether the sale of the team to Ross would absolutely go through, he said, "I assume so. We're going to go upstairs now and meet on that."

With that, Huizenga stepped into a Dolphin Stadium elevator and went upstairs ...

... except that I followed Ross and talked with him as he was headed out of the stadium and to his vehicle in the parking lot. He may have doubled back for that meeting. But it didn't look like it.

So I'll believe everything is set and done ... when everything is set and done.

well this is out of our hands right now mando. I think Ross still wants to get a good deal so he won't say I'll do whatever I can to keep him. He is a business man and this is a business. I think parcell stays but he gets a extension and pay raise for both himself and Irland and sparano

BTW hiring Peterson over parcells is a huge mistake. HUGE!

Ahh...please don't get me all nervous on a Monday morning. We just had the best year in a long time. I'm starting to not like Ross already.

Stop trying to create news by guessing...you don't know anything other than the facts. Stick to them. You're a knob!

my feelings exactly---it ain't so till it's so.

i hope Ross comes to his senses; frankly, he shouldn't buy the remaining stake unless he's assured BP will stay, but he seems a bit too headstrong for that. BP leaving will set us back to the days of chaos, Ireland & Sparano to the contrary notwithstanding.

nice work this season Mando---you won me over from the days when i sniped at your oh-no-we-lost-faneca/pace/whoever period.

hi,armando:good reporting.keep asking ross and every one to get the right answer.at least make us talk about good stuff.by alfrado

Hey Mando, do you happen to know the actual date of Bill's escape clause in that contract. I guess all any of us can do is hold our breath and wait for that date to pass, hopefully uneventfully. I think we all saw yesterday that bill's rebuilding job is yet unfinished here and I for one really would like him to finish the job.

I THINKE THE DATE OF THE ESCAPE CLAUSE IS IN RANGE OF 30-45 DAYS AFTER CLOSING OF SALE OF THE TEAM. POSTED BY WOOF

God I hope Big Bill stays.I saw on espn news that after the Baltimore game he said he was going to stay, that he liked it here.Cant trust everything you read but im gonna stay positive on this subject. We need another year or two with Bill.

Wow, wish I could get away with telling my boss a bunch of untruths, half-truths, and misdirections.

Bottom line - if Tuna doesn't want to stay, why would we want him to stay? Forcing him to stay won't help anyone.

Hopefully, a good enough process is in place to keep the Fins franchise moving on the right track!

I am nervous about this too!
Especially the report about Carl Peterson sucking up to Ross. What a HUGE HUGE mistake it would be to swap Peterson for Parcells.

Is Ross that stupid to NOT do anything it takes to keep Parcells a Dolphin?

I really hope one of you reporters has the balls to address this issue with him.

After yesterday's game, it is quite evident that we need AT LEAST two more years of Parcells' influence and knowledge to complete the job he started and build a Super Bowl Champion.

After all, how many Super Bowl's has Peterson won with KC? ZERO; he is a loser

Armando,

Great reporting! Wayne said he was going to meet with Ross right away upstairs and you followed Ross as he promptly left the stadium? That is funny stuff.

IN FOOTBALL YOU CAN'T SWTICH GEARS THAT EASY WHEN YOU ALREADY STARTED TO SEE PROGRESS AS W/DOLPHINS.IF YOU CHANGE FROM THAT YOU GET STUCK W/5YEARS OF LOUSY TEAM MY BE 10 YEARS LIKE LAST ONE.THINK BEST WAY TO SOLVE THIS MESS IS FOR MR HUIZENGA TO R WRTE TUNA-SAPRO AND IRLEND CONTRACTS .THEN GIVE THE TEAM TO THE NEW OWNER NICE AND FREE OF ANY CONFLECT WITH EVERY ONE HAPPAY SALSA. POSTED BY ALFRADO

The thought of Carl Peterson being the next GM of the Dolphins makes me want to throw up. He hasnt even been mentioned for any other GM opening. He was run out of Kansas City (Kansas City!)That should speak volumes to Stephen Ross.

I get the same uneasy feeling Mr. Salguero...
and it scares me.

Armando,

Your gut is right. This is all far from being resolved.

If we hire Carl Peterson I am a 38 year ex-Dolphin fan.

Drew Rosenhaus said he expects Carl Peterson to join the Dolphins front office even if Parcells comes back. Peterson and Ross sat next to each other at the game yesterday according to Mike Florio.

I don't care if he stays or goes! Sparano coached this team, not Parcells! There are other good GM candidates out there! For every good decision that was made, there were just as many bad ones! What are we going to do w/ Wilford?!! Lets not forget the money lost on McCown. Smiley made the IR shorlty after signing. We let Cincinatti get Cedric Benson, while resigning Cobbs because this regime is special teams obsessed. Having 4 WR's caught up w/ us yesterday. We had a good draft, although my lingering dissapointment in not drafting Flacco ourselves proved to be unfortunately right. I like Pennington, however, an open QB competition is in order this offseason. Henne lacks pro experience, but he can make throws that Pennington can't. We have decent WR's on the roster, but we lack a #1. If Tuna leaves, he can take Henning w/ him. Wild cat, trick plays and poor play calling! A power running game w/ Ronnie Brown and a # 1 WR in a good system wins games. Baltimore beat us w/ good players in a good, sound system, with a strong armed QB w/ talent around him.

I agree with Mando...there is more here.

FLORIDA ALWAYS HAVE MONOPOLY ON ALL KIND OF WIERD STORIES.IF YOU NOTICE TUNA IS NOT TALKING FOR A REASON WHICH IS THE STORY IS NOT OF HIS OWN MAKING.IT IS STORY ABOUT BUSINESS .IT IS ONLY BUSINESS SONNY. BY ALFRADO

Guys like Ross don't buy a team if they can't play with it. If Parcells is in charge, Ross can't play. So Parcells has to go again (a la New England and Dumbass Jerry Jones). Too bad. I thought there was something here for the long run, and then Huizina squats.

I just want to say thank you for not grading the dolphins today. We should just end on some good vibes. That was classy. Now..with that said...stop smoking that weed and watching X-files with the conspiracy theories! It makes you Paranoid! LOL. Just kidding. I agree, I'll believe he's staying when he signs a contract...period.

Sad, sad, sad. It's a New York conspiracy to destroy the Dolphins!

If Ross want's Bill he'll keep him. To me he's doing everything he can to keep Bill by not jumping right into a deal. I look at it like a new relationship between a man and a woman. If one is gun ho after the other right away, the other normally backs away a bit. At first I was mad at Ross for not going after Bill right away but after I realized this relationship, I know now Ross is doing and saying all the right things to keep Bill and Bill also knows he has it good in Miami.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Armando.

IN COMING DAYS ITHINK THE LOINS AND JETS GOING TO WORK HARD TO GET TUNA AN OFFER INCLUDE OWNER STAKE NOT LOUSY 3MIL A YEAR.POSTED BY ME

If he stays it will be for one more year so I heard.Anyway lets hope for the best we had a good year and I cant wait until March/April to see who we sign and draft.

Like a previous poster said, if we get Peterson in here, I'm done with The Dolphins! I wouldn't be able to take it anymore. I would be Dave Wannstache all over again. I saw it coming then, and I see it coming now. We'll be bad for years to come...

I am an ex-fan if peterson joins Dolphins.

IT TAKES ONLY ONE MOVE OR ONE CHANGE TO TRANSFER ONE TEAM FROM WHAT DOLPHINS HAS NOW TO A TEAM LIKE LOINS OR DOLPHINS OF LAST TEN YEARS.MY PREDICATION TUNA WILL GET NEW CONTRACT OR GET NEW TEAM WITH OWNERSHIP STAKE........................................ ..BY.............. I KNOW EVERY THING

Oh stop I dont mind if we give Peterson a job,the janitors job.But all kidding aside I think Bill will be back for one more year,we will give Peterson some job then when Bill go's Pete will take over and when that happens im done.

I hate the offseason...8 months to go...

Ross is talking to Peterson about replacing Joe Bailey who is leaving the Dolphins. Not to replace Parcells. Did anyone also think of that? Did anyone also think that Armando needed something to generate hits on his blog because the Dolphins season is over and there will not be much to write about this week. Parcells is staying. He was at Oklahoma Sooners practice this week scouting players and their coach Bob Stoops said he was looking at players for the Dolphins. Armando likes to stir the pot that is his job and he is good at doing it. He didn't see Nick Saban leaving a month before he did after Saban denied it and Armando believed him, so now Armando is trying to make up for the fact that he got duped by Saban by trying to catch Parcells in a similar act. I wouldn't worry about it Dolfans, Parcells is staying. Good job by Armando getting blog hits on what will probably be a slow news week.

DOESN'T WORK THIS WAY IN FOOTBALL .YOU HAVE TO BE SECURE WITH YOUR TEAM OF SOPR AND IRLEND TO KEEP ADVANCING THE WITHOUT LOOKING PROTECT YOUR BACK,IT'S NOT A LUNDRY BUSINESS.OK FOY.IT'S PRO SPORT....... BY ALFRADO

If they want to win Peterson is NOT the Guy....Just ask any-one in KC....20 years=Nuthin...

So lets think about this. This is what I see happening. Parcells might stay, and if he does, I'm sure he's staying only 1 more year. At the same time, lets say Ross hires Peterson to do Bailey's position. Fine! Once Parcells leaves after 2009 season, guess who's going to take his spot as VP of Football Operations, that's right, Peterson. Now we have two different cultures on our team, guess who will win out in the end, Peterson. Ireland will eventually leave, Sparano will get fired cause the team has not made progress because of poor drafting with heavy input from Peterson.

Mando, I understand the uneasy feeling but BP is doing what he has done all season. He is not really talking to the media and staying behind the scenes. Stephen Ross didn't get his money without having a good business acumen. The fact is his best chance at success; super bowls, filled stadiums etc.. is to continue the rebuilding with BP for at least 1 more year and stay out of his way. That being said, we all have to face the fact that Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano will have to stand on their own eventually.

Lastly, about Carl Peterson, there may be something to it but I believe this is just an attempt by an unemployed GM renewing contacts to find a job. If Ross is stupid enough to hire him and mess with a good thing, then we'll run them both out of town.

Lets talk about impending FAs and the salary cap. I want next season to start tomorrow.

OK BOYS NOW YOU TALKING.I LIKE THE MADE UP STORIES ABOUT THE FUTURE.PUT ME DOWN FOR SPARANO GETS FIRED NEXT YEAR.POSTED BY BACALA

I hope Ross is not the Jerry Jones type, all we need is this guy to tell us who to sign and draft.Did Jones really need to use a first rounder for Williams who did squat he does have Crayton, but then again who knows what TO's future is but still a first rounder, also we all knew the hardon he had for Dmac and Felix you just signed Barber did you need to spend a first rounder on a running back (yes Jones shown promise)but Dallas could have drafted a gaurd or some secondary help instead and if they wanted a back that bad they could have got Kevin Smith in round 2-3.Again why do you think Bill left Dallas because Jones is a control freak and when he wants something he will do whatever he wants to get it.Lets just hope Ross sits back and lets Bill do his thing.

Good stuff by the way coach Shula.

Um, dumb question I guess...

Armando, you are a Miami Herald reporter (or columnist??, excuse me, I'm not familiar with the terminology beat reporter, etc.) Can you not call or visit Parcells' office and ask him the question point blank?

I know you're gun shy due to our past experience, but please don't stir this pot.

You all are idiots!! If the Big Tuna leaves, then he leaves. I would rather have him; but if not i'm ok. I think that Big Tony deserves a lot more credit than he is given. He coached this team up and won with a mediocre group of talent. I hope the Big Tuna is here for our draft; but if not I think we will be ok.

No matter what happens I'm a PHINS FAN 4 LIFE! All the fans that will leave if Bill leaves, just go ahead and leave now.

if this new owner screws things up I'm quiting sports altogether.

Parcells should be given a big contract by Ross. Ross should start kissing up to Parcells now and give a fat pay raise to the trifecta. Ross should stay out of football operations. He has the best in the business. let the trifecta manage the team for the next 25 years. Ross, do not meddle with this team. Huizenga should've sold a portion of the team to Parcells-given as a bonus. Then, he wouldn't be able to quit and go somewhere else. I don't give a sh** what Parcells wants. Ross better give it to him. Parcells is the best in this business.

I'm a Fins fan, but enough is enough already. If Ross screws up, I will watch Shula's teams and be a classic dolfan and just not watch Pro Football anymore. I'll only watch college football and the Canes! Tired of all these rich bastards buying and f***ing up my team!

The fans ought to buy the dolphins just like in greenbay with the packers. dump these moron owners. afterall, we are the ones that buy the merchandise, seats, tv etc. screw these idiotic owners. South Fla taxpayers should buy the team with any other dolfan around the USA that wants to kick in.

Besides Parcells staying another issue that no one has discussed is cash flow. When Ross pays over $1B for the team he will be leveraged up the wazoo. Wayne was always willing and able to spend money because he had it and basically owned the team free and clear. Ross will not have that luxury, he will have debt sevice to pay back and may not be able to pay that big signing bonus money to the elite F/A's. He may be a billionaire now but he is heavy into the construction industry which has gone in the tank. What do you know about this Mando???

Mando is just stirring the pot, as he always does.

BTW, Mando, your main article concerning a "signed guarantee" is ludicrous. Parcells has an option to opt out. There is no need to execute a "guarantee". His contract is the guarantee. There is no need to have any "meeting" with Ross, as you suggest, for him to stay on. Of course, on the other side, Parcells saying he will stay doesn't mean he has to either - he will have a period following transfer of ownership where he has the right to opt out. That is how it works. No need for a special "meeting" with Ross, and there will be no "guarantee" signed either.

You guys REALLY shouldn't write about things you don't understand or, here's a novel idea, why don't you learn about the things you propose to write about before you publish it?

The Joe Bailey replacement sounds FAR FAR more reasonable, especially in light of Peterson's well-acclaimed acumen concerning the business side of operating a pro franchise.

Hey you can not trust what Parcells says either. Remember the cell phone call saying that if Jason Taylor plays this year it will be in Miami and then a few months later he was a Redskin. So none of these guys tell you reporters the truth, why should they. Just let it happen and see if Parcells is still working here in 4 months, my bet is that he is, this making a mountain out of a molehill. Ireland and Sparano were the real reason we went 11-5 this year. Parcells got them here and then sat back and watched them work.

I don't want Carl Peterson anywhere near the Dolphins in any position. His old school thought process is dated and does not work in today's NFL.

If Parcells leaves and is replaced by Peterson then I might go either Patriots or Jets, what do you think?

As long as Ireland and Sparano stay, then I am OK with Parcells leaving. I would like to have Parcell's stay with the Dolphins for this year's draft and free agency period, but after that, I would be OK with taking the training wheels off and leaving Ireland and Sparano on their own.

I don't think the Dolphins will be hurt the same way the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys were because Parcells isn't the coach. This is Sparano's team and even though he had a great year, he is still only a rookie head coach. Same with Ireland, a rookie GM. These guys still need to build their reputations - so they aren't going anywhere.

I am soooo glad we had a successful season and now have something to build on in the off-season. No more new coaches, new schemes, new quarterbacks, new everything. Finally we have some stability and a good team to build off of. The Ravens game showed many glaring weaknesses, but we had a glimmer of hope in the fourth quarter. We need help on that O-Line!! Go PHINS!!!!!!!
