Dolphins season ends with 27-9 playoff loss

It is over -- meaning this game and the season.

The Baltimore Ravens have defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-9 today and that loss in the wild card round of the playoffs sends the Dolphins home for the postseason.

The Dolphins finish 11-6 this season.

So it was a terrible day. But it was a very good year.

Let me know if the disappointment of the day in any way clouds the sunshine and warmth you've felt for 9 of the past 10 games before today.

Let me know what you think the Dolphin must accomplish this offseason ... Receiver ... more Olinemen ... NT?

And let me know whether you are seriously concerned that Bill Parcells will leave if and when Wayne Huizenga completes his sale of the Dolphins.

Come smart. Come strong.

What a great season. It's an exciting time to be a Dolphan.
I think we should keep Ginn and get a good slot receiver, someone who can go up the middle.

Shame on those who are already giving up on Chad. Even "Dan da Man" couldn't throw with that Ravens defense in his face...O'line (except Long) didn't get the job done...and that's the bottom line!
RECEIVERS MUST BE PRIORITY!!! This will spread the defense and make R-2 even more dangerous.

breaking news:tuna to stay another year, just can't leave his people behind so soon and may next year he goes to fix the jets once the economy recover this is not the move around .also by then camron will join him w\jets.one last thing for the next 10 years dolphins will average 10-6 record that is all.this always thier role NFL. Satele is a utility lineman at best. He whiffs on too many blocks. We have had no consistency of pass rush this season either. Bottom line? NT,C, G,LB,DB, WR ... so we have plenty of needs. If I could get a high 3rd rounder for Ricky, I'd take it. We really don't have any marketable players to trade, and we are picking late (25th?) so this is a draft where we Parcells and Ireland need to do what they do best. Maybe Parcells starts to stock the pantry with a few FA's now.

Don't ya'll kid yourselves peeps. Look at the powerhouse teams still alive in the playoffs for a reminder where football is one or lost.
Miami still is far from solid on O or D line much less even having depth in either.

Mr. Parcells and Ireland aint stupid and I'll be smilin if I see all those picks go O and D line. Dem some soup eatin boys.

I just want to thank the Dolphins for an amazing season!! 11-5? Who would have thought?? Screw the fact that we have a harder schedule next season. We'll get more players and we'll beat those teams to show that this season wasn't a fluke! Thank you Bill Parcels and Coach Sporano. It feels good to be a Dolphan again...

CAN YOU SPELL ALFAGO IS A DUMBASS.Where is my esay?Suggs should have been flagged or flogged.Titans will take care of that.Your day or reckoning is coming.Thugs ALWAYS crawl when the heat is on.Dolphins did not have the heat today.But our future is much brighter than the Baltimore Colts{Ravens}

I love fans that try and make season predictions for next year. What morons. Who knows who will be good next year. For all we know, Pittsburgh (ben is only one hit away from being sidelined), Tennessee (who knows how long Collins will be around), etc. may stink. You just never know with today's NFL. I hope the Dolphins again go under the radar. Let the idiots make the absolutely stupid predictions.

Mando- thanks again for the blog and your insight on the team. The result was not what we wanted but the coming years seem bright! Thanks Mando you are a pro as writers go and I hope you do this for many years to come. Get a grip, guys. Pennington made bad decisions but look at the pressure he was under. We have Henne, let him develop, but the Fins needs these things:

1) O-line improvement. Hopefully RT Thomas comes back stronger than ever and so does Smiley, LT Long continues to improve. Carey was destroyed by Ngata, so he needs to improve or get out.

2) WR. No skill position players of merit besides Bess and a streaky Ginn. Can you imagine lining up Boldin and Bess, with Camarillo in the slot and Ginn as a 4-wide???

3) D-line. We need a pass rushing DE, end of story. Depth at DT would be nice also. DEs Holliday, Langford and Merling are good but we need better talent.

4) Linebackers. I like Porter and Roth but we need someone in the middle. Crowder has a motor and is a tackling machine but he overpursues and gets misdirected easily

5) Secondary. Say it with me. Nnamdi Asomugha. Sign him now. He is worth it and is a shutdown corner with size and speed.

Before the regular season started I thought we'd get 5 wins tops. No depth at o-line, secondary and no outside skill players. That still remains, except that Bess and Camarillo developed. RB is set, QB is set for the forseeable future, and PR/K is set.

Everybody needs to chill with the negative comments, in general, & about next years 'tough schedule.' Miami went 11-5 without a single legitimate starting WR! Ginn, Camarillo, & Bess are ALL #3 'slot' receivers (at best)!!

People, look at how positive Miami's future is!! They can easily get the quality WR, DT, & CB they need with 3 picks out of the first 52! They'll draft around 22 and have Washington's second round pick for JT. Henne will be a STUD for us in the very near future. Parcells & Co. have already started adding studs on the O and D lines (which will continue EVERY offseason).

I do agree with most that Ted Ginn needs to go. If Sparano doesn't want him to return kicks/punts it is cear his value here is VERY Limited #@ best#. The guy is just too small to fit into what the big three are trying to do. Speed kills, but there are plenty of burners in every draft.

Free Agents: please throw the book at A.Boldin & A.Haynesworth. Either one would bring a massive upgrade to their respective unit.

I, for one, am very happy with the Miami Dolphins 2008 edition. And, I am VERY EXCITED about 2009!

they clearly played one of their worst games of the season at the worst possible time.

but out of everyone today, i thought ginn was absolutely awful. 2 of chad's interceptions were because he let the ball slip through his hands and because he fell down on an out route. plus he botched the handoff on the end around. not for anything, but he's getting paid alot of money to hang onto the damn ball and perform. i blame him for alot of mishaps today.

Who wrote, "Even 'Dan da Man' couldn't throw with that Ravens defense in his face..."???

When you get home from Elementary School tomorrow, rent a DVD overviewing Dan Marino's NFL career. Skip forward to the MNF game against the 1986 Chicago Bears [aka the "Best Defense of All-Time"].

Also, quickest release ever = no pass rush to worry about (period)

1st round shutdown corner or saftey, second round big WR and DL. third round LB. free agency: big time WR such as Husch or Boldin and soe special teamers please!!!....P.S. TED GINN IS A FREAKIN SCRUB!! screw cam cameron for putting that burden on the dolphins! go phins!

P.S.S. i hate band wagons...they hype everything up out of proportion as if they have been such good fans...screw you all! and i agree with the stadium fan post a little earlier, the games i went to the fans suck and leave like in the 3rd quarter...horrible and rediculous

okay...1st off wat a great season for miami despite of wat happened today...form 1-15 to 11-5???...i'll take that anyday...but on to the matter at hand...we need a shutdown corner and a FS for the longterm along wit more size and physicality on both lines and WR that has good size and reliability...don't push for the playmaking ability jus yet guys...i say give tedd ginn ONE MORE YEAR!!!...it usually takes 3 years for a reciever to fully develop...if he still doesn't produce to his draft status then get rid of him...that fumbled handoff by him today infuriated me...i never been so mad at a botched handoff like i was today

The dolphins have a young solid foundation to be a great team...and i am 100% confident the trifecta will add on to that...they know wat this team needs more then us fans do...and i kno they will not disappoint

as for u MrBaltimore...wat in the hell is so great about Baltimore???...in Miami u have a beautiful beach with cuban and puerto rican women with big bootys!!!...wat more could u ask for???...not to mention all the clubs and resorts as well...how in the world could u make an arguement that baltimore is a better city then miami???...ur out of ur mind!!!

anywayz wat i see that we need is more size and physicality in both the D-line and O-line, a good sized physical solid FS, add a couple pass rushers, an upgrade if not more depth at ILB (regarding Crowder, Ayodele has been solid), and a shutdown corner, we can wait on WR i think...give Ginn one more year, but then again adding a big WR wouldn't hurt either...and the one thing im shocked no one mentioned...A BETTER SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR!!!...someone that will have our KR and PR game at full swing while at the same time have our coverage units perform much better...DOLPHINS 2OO9 BABY!!!

As bad a game as Chad had, you've gotta pin the blame on the Offensive Line, as they were nearly non existant. Look at the Ravens O/L, they gave Flacco Some much time it was embarrasing. Had Chad have had nearly as much time, and given the fact he is quite an intelligent QB, he would have never been forced into throwing the picks. The constantly collapsing O/L also put pay to our running game, I lost count of how many times their backs were past the line before we had even reacted, it was a joke. You could see the defense rushing to the line preparing to blitz, I just wonder if we could have tried to fool them into commiting neutral zone / encroachment penalties with some fake snap calling.
Still given everything thats happened this season, and that I made 2 games in Miami this year, It's been a wonderful season in comparrison to last years effort. Kudos to all involved.

My problem right off the bat was we seemed to lose our b@!!$ all of a sudden. There we are 2nd and goal and we try to get cute with a pass instead of just knocking them in the mouth three straight times with Ronnie and Ricky and going for the early kill. We knew we needed to score TDs going into the game and when you have the Ravens on their heels like we did after that fumble, we should have stepped on their throat and knocked them back into our endzone. I had a sick feeling after the field goal that we had let them off the hook.

I know this will be the most unpopular post of all. Chad Pennington had a nice season, a great season but he isnt our QB. Everyone talking about the need to get fast WRs and how Ginn needs to get deep more often do not realize, Chad cant throw to them downfield without getting picked. Even his completions down field are floaters that the WRs have to battle back for. Ed Reed exposed that yesterday. It doesnt matter who you bring in at WR or how judicious Chad Pennington is with the ball. It eliminates a factor for the defense to consider and makes it very easy for the opposing defense to focus on shutting down the short passing game and run by stacking the box. Flacco showed how a strong arm can loosen up a defense for the running game. He doesnt have to complete 90% of those throws, just the fact that he can deliver a ball down the field makes the safeties play back and makes the RBs holes bigger and better. We need to know whether Henne is our guy or not because another year of Pennington is going to be another wasted year. I give the guy all the credit in the world for coming in here and making lemonade with lemons, but facts are facts and he isnt going to be the guy to get us anywhere with our offense against real defenses like the Ravens, Steelers, Titans etc.

Pennington can't throw when he is being rushed and blocked. Need to work on offensive line for 09.....

I cannot believe all the dang negativity! Yes! We lost to the Ravens! But, damn! We just finished the second best season in Franchise History! The first being of course our 17-0 1972 Undefeated Super Bowl Season. Next Season we have a lot to build on! I have a feeling that Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano will start getting ready for the Draft and Free Agency and will bring in the talent where they think we need it at the Most! Yes I agree that we do need a big target play makings WR. But you can find those in the later rounds for less then what it would cost us to draft them in the higher rounds.

Next year we have Camarillo and Bess coming back. If Camarillo comes back from his ACL Injury and does well in his Rehab then we'll have his services by opening day. Next Season i see Camarillo and Bess being #'s 1 & 2 respectively. If anything move Ginn to be the 3rd down Slot Receiver.

Defensively we could use a little more help. Definitely need some size in the height department in the Secondary. I would really like to see us Resign Bell and maintain his services as the Strong Safety. He is ferocious when it comes to laying hits on opponents. He's not afraid to sacrifice his body for the team. I would also like to see us resign Crowder. He has alot of ability to move east to west (ie sideline to sideline). We could definitely look for a nose tackle in the draft to back up Furgeson. Merling and Langston have really impressed me.

We don't need another quarterback. Between Pennington and Henne, we are definitely have 2 very solid QB's.

The Brooklyn Dodges had saying..."wait til next year!" And w/the foundation we have in place I see us being just as successful as we were this season. A true Dolphins fan stands up for and backs them win or lose! So there are definitely some dolfan's who are true dolfans! B/c those who aren't are making excuses and blaming individuals! The last time I looked, Football was a Team sport! 53 men on the roster, with 11 on the field at any given play. 1 individual does not win or lose a gam! A TEAM WINS or LOSES THE GAME! To qoute the Coach Tony D from the movie Any Given Sunday..."On any given Sunday a Team can win or lose the game! But its how you win or lose that counts the most!" CLASS! That is one word that best describes our beloved Dolphins Staff and Team for the 2008 Season! GO PHINS!

ChasSCPhinsFan

First of all, hats off to all the Phins players and coaching staff. Was a helluva year!

We did over achieve this year given the talent on our current roster. That said, for those crying to trade Pennington or dump Ronnie, I say put the smoke down and get a clue. Those guys were incredible this year. Did anyone else notice how hard Ronie played yesterday? He was incredible!

Ok so here's where I'd like to see new talent next year.

OFFENSE:

Interior OL. Saw way too much pressure up the middle all year on both runs and passes. Ronnie, Ricky, Cobb combo should have made ours one of the top running attacks in the league.

WR - Bess and Camarillo are solid #2 and/or #3 reciever types. Proud to have them on the team. Bet money one or the other will make the Pro Bowl next year. Ginn is not a #1 and I don't believe he ever will be. Need to fix this.

Defense:

LB and D-line: Even though Joey had a great year sack wise, our pass rush wasn't there when we needed it on numerous occasions. Gave up way too many 7 - 9 yard runs up the middle. Also couldn't get off the field on 3rd down until teams hit the 20yrd. line. Looking for a stud Mike backer and a NT.

CB. Our secondary was pretty good, but not enough to really scare anyone. Expecially when the pass rush isn't getting there. See both Ravens games for case in point. Think we can improve here.

Special teams: Need some aces here. Guys who can block punts/kicks and wedge bust.

Bottom line: It was a great year by any measure. Scincerely hope Parcells sticks around to help us upgrade a few starters and add the depth we need to compete through a full season.

Cheers!

Not being negative, just stating the facts. Pennington isnt going to beat the Steelers, Titans or Ravens defenses with his arm. Defenses can key on the short passing game and running game and not worry about the deep ball, thats a huge advantage to defenses. Its not a negative on Pennington, just the facts. He is a good backup but we need a QB who can stretch the field for Brown and Williams to be effective. I think its great Pennington did well, but he isnt the QB that should be seen as the one that will get us past those elite defenses. We need Henne or another strong arm to develop into that QB and thats not going to happen with Pennington as the starter. Yes he threw some long balls this year but they were floaters, most of them our receiver had to adjust to or fight off inferior dbacks for. Nobody is scared Pennington is going to beat them deep so they keep 8 an 9 guys up in the box which kills our running game.

Mr.Baltimore flipper, the city of Baltimore has just only one championship this decade. UM has won a national championship first in football and then in baseball. The Marlins won the worldseries. The Heat won a championship as well. The city of Miami has 4 championships so far this decade. Your pretending city got only one a Superbowl? The city of Miami are far from being losers. I think Miami is doing quite well so far. Also I think the Titans are going to win next week over your Baltimore wannabe team, flippy!

A combination of a very soft schedule, a great acquisition in Chad Pennington and superlative coaching brought the Fish to the playoffs. Some people here are overreacting to a tough playoff loss. Go back to 1971. The Dolphins lost the Superbowl to the Cowboys 24 to 3. Next season they were perfect. Tough losses build character. Next season the schedule will be tougher and the Fish will respond.

Why does this always seem to happen to EVERY quarterback we have?
Our QBs always throw a TON of picks in the playoffs. Dan Marino, David Woodley, Jay Fiedler, and now Chad Pennington.
WTF is going on?!
And if Ginn would've just handled that ball on that end-around...he would been gone and the score would've been 20-16 (if Sparano played it safe and went for the FGPAT, though that obviously still isn't safe anymore).
Our D played damned well, they deserved a better show from the O. Besides that big play for McGahee, they did awesome. Hat's off boys...we just need to shut that shit down on the corners.
We need Wide Receivers!!! Get some big names on free agency (Boldin, maybe?) and then pick up Maclin/Crabtree!

2007: 1-15 Woo Hoo!
2008: 11-5 Damn!?

Look at all the bitching on this blog! Get a grip! No one expected a playoff appearance to happen this season did they? Be honest. 6-10 was the best everyone was hoping for. Yeah, next year will be tougher - don't you believe Sparano / Parcells will make the team better next year? If you don't - find another team to bitch about.

FACT: The Dolphins were AFC East Champions this year.

FACT: The Dolphins beat the Patriots this year. (Can anyone say 'Wildcat' and not smirk thinking of the look on Belichek's face?)

FACT: The Dolphins beat the Jets this year. (Can you remember the last time that happened? Just smirk - that's priceless!)

FACT: The Dolphins were able to win (not lose) games in the fourth quarter this year.

FACT: The Dolphins won a game in Kansas City that was so cold - chicken soup was served instead of water or gatorade that would freeze into ice!

FACT: The Dolphins made the playoffs after winning one game last year.

FACT: Dolphin fans expect playoff performances every year.

FACT: There is only one team that is satisfied with their NFL season - the superbowl winner.

Great Season!

Happy New Year!

This game was won in the lines. Point in proof was the penetration through the center. We need a bigger line, much like Dallas if we plan to run and use playaction. Also it wouldnt hurt to have a 240lb back who can fall foward for 3-4 yards every down, we were stuffed in short yardage and they had no respect for our run game. Get some bigger o-linemen a big a$$ back and re-tool the receivers with free-agency. Chad played with a lot of pressure, and threw the game away to Reed, but the D did do a nice job of keeping us in the game. Had we had a better protection we could have made small but efficient plays to get us in scoring range. Also did you see that ifiot Cam Cameron smiling like he just prooved a point? Well with that defense freaking any offensive coordinator will look good. Cant wait to see Tenesee stomp Flaco.
