Is Chad Pennington Miami's championship QB?

Chad Pennington had a wonderful regular-season playing quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. His one playoff outing was terrible.

So where does that leave the Dolphins?

They have a great game manager. A great leader. A fine regular-season quarterback that can surely help them go from 1-15 to 11-6.

But do they have a championship quarterback? Do they have a guy that can help them not just reach the playoffs but win in the playoffs? Do they have the guy who can help them go from 11-6 to something greater and maybe even a Super Bowl?

Coach Tony Sparano believes so. I asked Sparano Monday if Pennington will be his starting quarterback for 2009 or if the player who threw four interceptions against Baltimore must earn the starting job all over again?

Sparano, who preached the need to have competition at every position last preseason, said Pennington is his starter for 2009. So much for the idea of Chad Henne getting a chance.

“There are a lot of issues that go on out there during the course of the ball game that can lead to throwing interceptions, fumbling the ball, giving up sacks," Sparano said. "Normal things when you give up sacks, it’s the line’s fault; well you don’t really know that. It can be the backs, it can be the receivers not running the site adjust, it can be a bunch of different things.

"There are a lot of things that went into why we didn’t play well enough yesterday, particularly on that side of the ball. That quarterback has played very well for us the entire year. I think the guy is just an outstanding player.”

Pennington indeed is an outstanding player. But again, is he a championship quarterback? That question can not be answered with facts. Pennington has not won a championship. And the game against Baltimore showed his flaws.

He threw several passes into double coverage, which I hadn't seen him do most of the season. But of greater concern, he sailed a couple of passes and Ed Reed plucked one of those out of the air and returned it for a touchdown.

I am reminded that in 2000, Jay Fiedler led the Dolphins to the AFC East championship. Much like Pennington, Fiedler was a fine leader, a guy good enough to help a good team win in the regular season. But the Dolphins believed he could also help deliver them to playoff success.

They were wrong then.

Do you think they are right this time with Pennington?

Mando,
Dude, come up whats up with the hate you put on Chad Pennington! He had one bad Game this season! Guess what...STUFF happens! I think Pennington has earned the right to be the Starter for the Dolphins in 2009. He is fantastic leader, and an even better mentor to both Henne and Beck. Mando you were such a supporter of Pennington this season and after 1 bad game you throw him into the DOGHOUSE and are ready to sit him down, because of one bad game. You know Mando, I get the feeling your not even really a Dolphins Football Fan at all... What are you a closet Jets fan? Your last 2 blog posts the one bout Peterson and this one makes me really wonder if you really like the dolphins, and your just covering them because you have too.

Pennington, I honestly believe he did the best he could w/what he had to play with this past sunday against the ravens. Miami's revamped and very young offense, just didn't have the experience needed to take on a Seasoned Ravens Defense whom have had at least 4 or 5 maybe even more years to play together. The offense had training camp, preseason, and 17 regular season games to jell. I think they did a great job this season. 2009, I see Pennington taking us back to the Post-Season and advancing us to the Divisional rounds to maybe even the AFC Championship game.

GO PHINS!

Yes tony beer AND jack dan. is serve in the cellar...

YUO CAN SIGN UP IN THE CELLAR WITH DREAMERS.......BY LOGIC

Not really sure what you are getting at Armando. We got beat by a better team on Sunday. Chad didn't have his best game but much of it wasn't his fault. The line didn't give him much of a chance, the running game was pretty much non-existent and as a result he tried to force some things. This team came an awful long way in a very short period of time this season. We still have holes in our team and the talent level needs to be upgraded. Chad Henne's time will come but not right now. Chad Pennington was a big reason for this team's success this season and has earned the right to be the starter in 2009. Is he a Championship quarterback? We don't know that right now. But as things stand right now, this is not a championship team.

Guys if you dont want to be in the cellar , come join the dark side..

What does Miami need? Thats the real question.

We need a big, fast WR that can play the game. A guy with a Ernest Wilford-like body who is fast and a good football player.

We need a star guard opposite Smiley (Donald Thomas?), and more overall depth on the Offensive Line.

We need better pass rush from the defensive line.

We need inside linebackers that don't wilt at crucial moments.

We need to continue to upgrade the secondary where possible.

We need to get the best players available and let the chips fall where they may.

WE NEED TO KEEP PARCELLS AND KEEP CARL PETERSON OUT OF MIAMI...

yes one of those holes is wearing number 19 for the fins.

Thank you!

Pennington is the QB that gets you to the playoffs everyother year...make the the QB spot an open competition this spring and let Henne show you what he has learned...I remember being told by Sparano that if the game got out of hand one way or the other that Henne would get a shot, it happened three times this year and Henne got 0 chances - WTF???

Go ahead with all your 'let Henne learn' talk now you sheep

I think Pennington is a cut above Fiedler. That being said, I think Sparano said the safe thing when asked about Pennington's status for 2009. Just because he says he's the starter now doesn't guarantee he will be when the season begins in September. However, after the year he has had I'd be surprised if he wasn't our starter for the first game. It's basically his job to lose right now. By making the QB position an open competition this off-season that might create too much turmoil within the team. I say that they surround Pennington with a better supporting cast (beefed up O-line and playmaker WR)and see what he can do with that. If he still falters then it's time to give Henne a shot.

OK...I'll give you guys that. Penny is the best QB we've fielded since Dan left...Now...What, exactly is that really saying? That's tantamount to saying that "The used Honda Civic we just bought is the most reliable car we've owned since we sold the Rolls Royce"...Exept during that time you've owned nothing but used and broken down Kias, Saturns, and Pintos...If you think Dan wouldn't have done better you need rain surgery...Once the Marks bros left who did Dan have? OJ...a great possesion receiver, Gadsen, etc...He would made Teddy look like Duper...

I THINK WHAT DOLPHINS NEED IS TO KEEPTUNA AND CO IN PLACE AND TET THEM DO THE BEST THEY KNOW HOW.SECOND KEEP BUILDING THE CELLAR TO BE READY IN TIME W/GOOD MENU OF SHOW BIZ ITEMS AND HOT DOGS IN CASE TUNA LEAVES.POSTED BY JENUS LOGIC

there is a movie called the cellar.very BAD one

If the two teams switched QB's before the game, I'd be willing to bet that Pennington would've performed better than Flacco did against Miami's D and that Flacco would've made even more mistakes than Chad did against the Ravens' D. Obviously, that's just an opinion of mine and there's no way of knowing if my assumption is the correct one.

He might not be a "championship QB", but I'm sure he would be able to win one if he were at the helm instead of Flacco in Baltimore or Collins in Tennessee (I believe he'd be an upgrade over those two QBs).

He could probably have a chance leading Philly, NYG, Carolina or Pittsburgh because they all have such great run games and strong defenses. He probably couldn't lead SD or AZ to the title, just as he wasn't able to with Miami's current talent.

You are all morons. We have not made the playoffs since 2001 and now you think we should kick out our QB who got us there. He was 2nd in MVP voting knuckleheads!! I like in Baltimore and watched the team kick Dilfer to the curb for a big QB with a big arm (Elvis Grbac)and watch the team fall apart. Our offense will be fine with the return of Thomas & Smiley. Watching the Ravens it is clear, we need playmakers on defense, especially in the secondary. Resign Crowder, pick a playmaker like Laurinitis first round and a couple more guys like that with our 2 #2's and then use the rest of the draft to continue to build depth. Maybe we get a young guy with upside in free agency.

Armando, are you serious when you said Dilfer had a strong arm?? Seriously?? Did you watch him last year in San Francisco? Everything was a dump off to a back or a slant to a WR. His arm might have been marginally better than Pennington's but not by much. He was hardly a 'strong-armed QB'.

And to Marc....I realize you have it in for Pennington but give the man his due. He is the Comeback Player of the Year this year and was runner-up for MVP. Can he do it next year and every year after that? Don't know. I hated the guy when he was in New York too but it was mostly because of my dislike for the Jets. I can appreciate what he's about now. He's about leadership and ball control and game management. He's never going to go out and put up huge stats but the guy knows how to win and how to get people to rally around him. And if he keeps the seat warm for a couple more seasons until Henne is ready all the better.

Probably a little early to talk about the draft but the 'Phins need to look for a dominant linebacker (likely to replace Crowder) and a OL (likely to replace Carey) as well as WR and DB help. But Rome wasn't built in a day. If we can come close to what we did last off-season that would be great.

PLEASE GUYS KEEP IT SIMLE AND FUNY .DO NOT WRITE A LOT .IT GIVES ME A HEADACHE .NOW LET US TALK ABOUT FIELD TRIPS TO THE CELLAR NEXT SEASON.POSTED BY EMPTY BRAIN

If he gets us there then he does but he does deserve to be a starter for 2009..Don't forget he was pick up to be a mentor for Chad Henne till he is ready to take the job why ask that stupid question ARMANDO YOU JET FAN!

"Come on, everyone knows Miami has alot
of other needs to get this team SuperBowl
level. Why would you mess with the QB who
helps everyone else on offense learn and
become better ? Henne is learning tons sitting and waiting. I don't see the problem here."

Couldn't say it any better.

i am sure that chad henne will be worth than chad.p.you noticed both player have same first name CHAD.....only in florida.this cellar stuff is sure funny.posted by adam

Give Chad a break. Chad does not possess Marino's arm granted, but how many f'n titles did Marino win.... yeah a big fat zero! And that was with Sims and Webb blocking. We had two rejects (MY GOD) Alleman and Ndukwe back there! Not to mention Satele and Carey were getting blow up on every play against the Ravens, Chad had no time to throw and when he did there was noone open.

Oh and Please cut mr742. Hes an idiot for always posting that cut Pennington garbage. We went 1-15 last year stoonad!

all this talk about Flacco and Ryan and Henne needing to sit on the pine and learn. Henne broke all records while a UM and that includes some damm good QB's. He was injured most of his senoir year but still had better records thatn Flacco and Ryan. Give the guy a chance to prove himself, that was the plan this year. Penny's ball floats and takes to much time to develop the defense keys in and the recievers have to wait for the ball. He can't make use of his WR because he stares down the backs and tight ends.. That being said it would not matter who the WR's are if Penny can't throw to them.. How does everyone know we wouldn't be still in the playoffs with Henne?

Look...I never took anything away from Chad from a leadership stan point. I simply cannot look past his (many) deficencies...He is WAAAY overrated and by no means should have been in contention for the Pro Bowl, nor league MVP...Beck was nicknamed "checkdown" but at least he did go through progressions...Penny already knows he's throwing to a RB before the snap...Now, do we have an alternative? More than likely not

chad is much better QB than marino who played aganist very bad teams in his days.

if the fins had any kind of consistent running game the offensive would have had other options. as a result of not having one we asked penny to do things that may be outside of his capabilities. and of course the ravens secondary lay waiting for these forced and hurried attempts.

can't wait to see the finished product in henne, but in the meanpenny i feel quite effectively

BREAKING NEWS:I DREAMED LAST NIGHT THAT CHAD HENNE WILL START A FEW GAMES TO SEE WHAT HE CAN DO IN GAMES AND HIS ABILTY IN THE INTERCEPTION DEPARTMENT.I ALSO DREAMED THE CELLAR WAS COMPLETE READY FOR GRAND OPENING NEXT DAY OF TUNA LEAVING.POSTED BY LOGIC

I think Mandy even covered this in the beginning of the season...Who believes that Teddy would be more effective with a QB that could get him the ball deep? We've all seen flashes of what he can do...If we had a QB that could hit him in stride and not running back to the ball we'd have a legit deep threat!

Jed: Pennington didn't come close to winning the MVP. Manning had like 32 votes and Pennington got four along with some other dude. Not close. Now go find EllieMae and granny and scrounge up some vitels so we can hang out by the cement pond.

Do you think Henne would have done better for us this year Mando.Chad deserves to be our starter next season in my opinion.Look at what he has done with no vet at the wr position.Lets see what we do in the draft and FA and hope Bill sticks around. Also lets see what Henne does in pre-season but I also think that if we have a good lead on who we play we should throw Henne out there. But Chad earned his spot.

Let me share that at the U they have this saying about Ed Reed: Two-thirds of the Earth is covered by water. The other third is covered by Ed Reed.

And you cannot overcome that kind of coverage with a noodle arm quarterback.

Just browsed a mock draft out there and it shows the Dolphins selecting the following players in the first three rounds:

Terrence Cody , NT, Alabama
George Selvie, DE/OLB, USF
Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri
some guard

I know these mocks are nothing but guesses meant to satisfy football nerds like us. But how much better would the Dolphins be if they could add a maountain of a nose tackle, another pass rusher, a receiver who could stretch the field, and more OL help? Personally, I think they need to upgrade the nickel spot more than receiver in the draft, but whatever. Point is, whether it's these players or not, the overall talent will increase and there will be better days ahead. I also hope they re-sign all their free agents - they did well and deserve to compete for spots next year.

By the way, Ginn tops 1,000 yards next year and becomes a pro bowler if Henne ever takes control of this offense (or any other Qb with a nice deep ball). You guys see his catch against the Jets? Nice hands. And I like the fact that he avoids contact. i want that burner around here for a long time.

I THINK IF CHAD.H STARTED THE LAST GAME HE WOULD MADE A RECORD 7 INTERCEPTIONS LIKE THE BACK QB W/EAGLES FEW WEEKS AGO.NOW BACK TO REALITY NEXT YEAR RECORD AT BEST WILL BE 7 - 9 . BY LOGIC

I heard a few "EXPERTS" Say that Penny would be exposed in the playoffs. Looks as if they were right. Also Chad says he feels good about 3 of his 4 ints? Dang, he needs to go back and watch some film. So much for playing smart and protecting the ball.

ARMANDO, The answer is NO. You've said it before and it was proven against the Ravens, "Chad can not make all the throws". What more needs to be said? If you float the ball down field, pressure or no pressure chances are the ball is gonna get picked.

i agree with duper.we need a QB with fat big huge like stick of butter for a QB.BY MARGIN

we need WR at 7.5 foot to win.by margin

Pennington may or may not win a championship, but he is far better than Fiedler(period)

If Fiedler came in this year, would he have helped turn the Dolphins into a playoff team?

I think not. Fiedler came into a perennial playoff team. Pennington came into a team that was quite the opposite.

Armando,
what kind of post is that questioning if chad pennington is our championship quaterback??? We went from 1-15 to 11-5 and now ya are questioning if Penny is a championship quaterback??? No one ever thought we would even get this far,, and Penny reminded us what was like being in the playoffs again after 6 years. Besides it wasnt all Chad's fault that we lost the game we would still have a shot at it if it wasnt for the Patrick Cobbs fumble and the Ted Ginn fumbled on the reverse.

If you take a look at the Superbowl winning quarterbacks in the past 20 years, you'll see a few "Game Managers" on the list. Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer were both so called game managers and won a Super Bowl. It's not out of the question but it is rare (Those teams also had historic defenses). The most glaring need for the Phins is OL. The Ravens dominated the line causing Pennington to make mistakes. The Dolphins will use there top 3 picks on OL, DL, LB. It won't be in that order necessarily, but they will take the best available for those positions.

Pennington IS this teams qb for now and the near future as well. He just had the greatest season since Dan Marino and lets face it he had nobody and i mean NOBODY to throw the ball to. Not a single receiver or tight end that we have would start on any other team in the NFL. The dolphins seriously need to get 2 starting receivers this offseason and get rid of either Ginn or Bess, and im saying dump Ginn since Bess has greater upside. Then we have obvious issues on the defensive side of the ball with some free agents possibly leaving, and needing to upgrade the middle. Chad can win a championship for the fins folks. Just get him some wr's who can run and read routes, TJ Houshmanzadeh is going to be a free agent as well as Patrick Crayton, and both would seriously upgrade this teams ability to stretch the field in games.

CP helped us win the east with Camarillo, Ginn and Bess. None of these guys were drafted in any fantasy leagues and two weren't drafted in the NFL. He's amazing. I forgive him for being a Jet.

Bottom line: We neeeeeed WRS!

Whoever said Hakeem Nicks would be a great pick up, I say let's shoot for something better.
I've long advocated drafting Maclin/Crabtree...we need to make it happen.

Picking up Boldin or Houshmanzadeh (I'm tired of people pronouncing his name wrong "deh" is not pronounced "duh" it's pronounced "day", even the analysts can't do it right) would be amazing...

Boldin would be perfect because he runs amazing routes and picks up all that YAC. I can't think of a better target for Pennington to throw to.
I agree with most of you that the Tuna Plan requires three years of development. Hopefully Henne'll be ready and our D will be stacked enough to handle anyone in the league and we should be able to spread out opposing Ds.

Luis: My parents paid a high price of sacrifice to bring me to this country so I could question ANYTHING I wanted.

I have that right now, buddy.

Meanwhile, you are free to believe that a QB can throw four interceptions in the game and have nothing to do with a loss. That's your right, too, even if it makes no sense.

Oh c'mon...don't act like this is about ethnicity.

And Luis has the right to question your criticism as well.
I'm sure this specific blog was made simply to make people think, but I agree that writing off Pennington because of one game doesn't make too much sense.

I get what you're saying...why stick with Sarah Tall and Plain when we can do better? The thing is, we're not in the same league as the Prom Queen and until we are, Sarah's getting the job done. (Innuendo totally intended)

This bores me...work's slow...where's that update you promised Mandy? BTW, I can't believe you deleted my weasel word post, you lttle weasel you...

Guys, I'm jusy as excited about Henne as the next guy but Chad is the guy now. I hate his arm strength but I will compromise that for his accuracy and itellect. He had a bad game, he had crazy pressure all game! Let him continue to groom Henne! Henne will be the better for it, he is learning how to prepare like Chad does and that's huge! To answer the question if Chad can win a ring, look no further than ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer! Who happened to play for those Baltimore Ravens in 2000. If Trent Dilfer (BUST as top 5 pick) can win a ring, Chad can win one. FACT!

forget TJ Housh, he is over 30, has marginal speed, marginal size and wants LARRY FITZ $! I dont even think Larry deserved that much money and Larry is ridiculous. TJ cant hold Fitz jock strap!!! No TJ for us!

I immediately thought of Fiedler as well after the Ravens' playoff game. Good in the regular season, awful in the playoffs. I think Chad's a little bit better than Fiedler. After all, Fiedler never finished 2nd in the NFL in QB rating.

If guys like Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson are good enough to win Super Bowls, then so is Pennington. They really just need to bring in more talent. With a few good LBs, CBs, and WRs, Pennington can win a SB with the Dolphins.

Some of you Dolphin Fans are Unbelievable !!!! We just completed the "miracle season". I say miracle season because NOT ONE OF US predicted the fins would be 11-5 & AFC East Champions, as soon as they signed Chad P last year. For the first time in years, I can wear my Dolphin gear in NJ and be proud AND shut those loud Jet fan up....that is priceless. The fins tied the record for least about of turnovers. True, Ricky & Ron helped but it would not have happened without Chad P's surety when throwing. Make no mistake, close games are won by the team with the least amount of turnovers. He also had a career year in yards with NO receivers (Ginn si still a bust, considering his high draft pick). It is true that Chad P picked the worst time to have his worst game, but how many teams have played well against Baltimore's D? So you're gonna kick Chad to the curb and put in who.......? Please. If Henne was all that, he would not have been around when the Dolphins snagged him. Don't think he's Matt Ryan or Flacco in waiting. He'll get his shot soon enough. Even though the INT's are hard to evercome, can someone tell me what happened to the pass rush on Sunday???? What was the average for Ricky & Ron? I saw a replay when Chap P was in trouble and Ginn was STANDING there looking....not going back to help his QB.

Just let Bill do his thing and get all of his players in there. (If he stays) We will be a force to reckon with. But Remember....Brady will be back for NE next year. And you better believe it will be a lot harder to win the East next season. So Take your hat off to Chad P. Enjoy the memories. And Hope he's back next year...

Let it go. Ginn is fine and is not going anywhere...so let it go.

Unbelievable. Yeah, I heard for years how Joe Montana had the strongest arm in the history of the NFL... Yeah, Delhomme is right there too with that rocket on his shoulder, Trent Dilfer, Rex Grossman? (When you have a "manager" you want a strong arm QB, when you have a strong arm QB, you want a "manager"....) Where has that strong arm gotten Russell?

My goodness folks. Arm strength in the QB slot does not make the Phins a SB contender!! Phins need to keep building this team from the inside out on both sides of the ball. They have a great QB who is smart and manages the game for them better than anyone since Marino. Lets continue to build up the talent level around Penny, give him more weapons, a stronger line, etc. and play this out without worrying about how far he can or can't take this team.. Unbelievable.

Imagine putting Boldin on the opposite side of Ginn and Bess as a slot receiver? Boldin, who I think leads or is close to the lead in YAC this year, suddenly the 10yd throws by Penny turn into 20-30yd gains. (Sounds a lot like Montana, no?) Ginn has not shown that ability yet, Bess a little bit. Focus on building out this offensive line - build the running game and give Penny more time to throw - and strengthen the defense and add depth.

Now Vernon Gholston...Thats a Bust!

So because Pennington had a bad playoff game, now we're questioning whether or not he can win a championship and asking if Henne who never won a thing at Michigan can?

It's really a dumb debate. The only reason the 08 Dolphins made the playoffs was because of Pennington. The Dolphins aren't being built to win because of a QB. It's been proven many times you don't need a great QB to win a championship and Pennington is better than a lot of QBs who did win.
