Dolphins left tackle Jake Long, originally a first-alternate to the Pro Bowl, is going to Hawaii after all.
Long was named to the team Tuesday after Buffalo's Jason Peters ceded his spot on the squad for physical reasons. Long joins running back Ronnie Brown and linebacker Joey Porter as Miamians on the Pro Bowl roster.
"It's a huge honor to be named to the Pro Bowl team," Long said in a statement released by the Dolphins. "I'm excited about the opportunity to join so many other great players in the game, and looking forward to representing my teammates and the Dolphins organization in Hawaii."
Long, the first pick in the 2008 draft, becomes the first player selected No. 1 overall to make the Pro Bowl as a rookie since George Rogers did it for the New Orleans Saints in 1981. Only four No. 1 overall picks have made the Pro Bowl as rookies since the NFL merger in 1970 -- the other three were Rogers, Billy Sims and Earl Campbell.
Congrats, large man.
By the way, if you're thinking the Dolphins won't be going back to the offensive line in the draft, think again. I am told a player who is impressing the Miami contingent in Mobile, Ala., in advance of Saturday's Senior Bowl, is Oregon State's Andy Levitre.
Levitre, 6-3 and 317 pounds, played primarily right tackle for the Beavers. But he projects as a guard in the NFL and can always work at right tackle in a pinch -- something the flexibility loving Dolphins are always looking for.
Keep an eye on Levitre, who is not a first-rounder, but likely no worse than a third rounder.

Kordell stewart made a pretty good position change from WR to QB in the nfl! You guys are writing D.thomas off already! He's a talented player obviously if he only played organized football for a year and gets drafted! "Case closed" go phins! All this is hypethetical anyway, you really think its too late for a guy to change positions in the nfl? Especially a guy that only played a year of football?

you just won't let it go.he's not moving to center that's why they're looking to upgrade the center position through fa and the draft.kordell stewart played football longer all the way through college and was a tremendous athlete, why argue? this is a moot point its not happening.

mozzarella,
First I lost all respect for Armando when he wouldn't stop talking about JT when everyone in Miami was tired of hearing about JT. Even after the trade every blog for week was still about JT. All he writes is opinion based with no insite and nothing I havn't heard somewhere else before. Plus he never responds to you when you ask him a question unless your insulting him
Not to mention 90% of posters here are... well annoying. cough cough monzila

the exactly was for mr bungle and d.thomas
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 02:47 PM
That's exactly my point go phins, he hasn't played ball long enough to say he can't play center. Even if they don't try it out I think he's one of our five best linemen on the team, he's a monster in the run game and I as a fan of the team I would want our best o-line combination out there.
Posted by: shanader | January 21, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Lol you amaze me go phins, you won't accept D.thomas at center, but agree with mr.bungle in saying he can move to right tackle?!?! So he can't handle line calls and audibles but now you wanna put him on an island to go against edge rushers?
Posted by: shanader | January 21, 2009 at 02:58 PM
heeeeeeee's nooooooot moooooooving tooooo center.i slowed it down because i don't know what part of that you don't understand.its a whole different ballgame there.your the only one so far that doesn't get it.i do like louis delmas s for the early 3rd round.you happy now
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 03:05 PM
shanader, Thomas is a very good athlete with good feet. He's just raw. But he has the frame to get even bigger. He might be able to play center but I think that would be a waste of his talent. Most of the good edge rushers don't come from the left side though there are a few. Teams tend to run to the right side (strong side) and that's why he'd be a good fit at RT if not RG.
Posted by: Mr. Bungle | January 21, 2009 at 03:05 PM
shanader you got to be kidding me,right? learn the game of football before you make a fool of yourself.rt is the the strong side with the te lined up next to him, they usually run right the power side.the rt doesn,t make line calls.it much easier to slide fron rg t rt.get a clue please!!!! lol
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Bungle, I saw your post on the "home base" and I agree with O's assessment of Raji. He has a small frame, meaning he actually weighs too much. I think at around 315-320, he would be an even better player. I see him as a Warren Sapp type who can beat his man one on one and get to the QB. Him taking on two blockers in the 3-4 would be a waste of his talent... Brace would be more of that type, a brute and anchor.

All this guard talk. I like Ndukwe, Alleman, and Satelle. Remember, these guys are all new to the system there, and new to each other as far as chemistry. They don't cost much either. Ndukwe and Alleman made a few mistakes for sure, but both have excellent athletic ability, quickness and agility. Give'em a chance. Has any opposing DT had a great day on these three? Smiley and Donald Thomas will be back and start at the guard spots, but now you can say they have real depth. I liked Ndukwe when he got in at left tackle in the preseason, especially vs the Saints, and think that versatility is a value. McChesney had a rough time. Duke Robinson or Ubrick would upgrade any team other than NYG. I'd be okay with one of them, or a few others in the draft, but I don't see it as a pressing need. Will there be a huge nose tackle available, or is Soliai a player to rely on when Ferguson hangs it up?
If you watch the Chief game closely, you may become ill. I was sickend, as I saw a disgusting lack of toughness and willingness to hit in the defensive secondary that I've seen all season. The only hitters are Bell and Jason Allen. Culver is at least willing. I know it was cold, I know they both had picks that game, but Goodman and Hill do not like to hit. Not this game, and not all season long. Its like going to a keg party and not drinking the beer. When you see Goodman stiff arm Larry Johnson, instead of putting his head down and tackling, when you see Hill stop his own momentum and catch a receiver instead of running through him in a big hit dream situation, its sickening. Jack Tatum would have regurgitated, had he seen this. When Goodman puts it in reverse and backs up 20 yards with his blocker instead of shedding and putting his nose in there, or even just holding ground, I know he has sideline responsibilities, but to see him attempt a tackle with one elbow as he and Hill let Wes Welker run by them, its sad. Hill nailed Jason Peters during a pick return with a blind hit. He had a nice form tackle the week after, and a decent hit the next but it should have been much harder. No fear in a receiver over there. I know they are small and run pretty good, Hill doesn't bite as hard on play action as Jason Allen has, but Jason wants to hit people. Where is the good old hard nosed hitting that is infectious throughout a team? Goodman's tackling is very similar to Sam Madison's: Put it in reverse when blocked, go for the strip instead of getting low (see the Cardinal game), take a ride on a high attempt, and never put your nose in there (see any game). Pat Fisher would boycott Miami games. The fish need three or four DB's.
A scary receiver would be nice. A grave-digger type NT that collapses the pocket and plugs the run, very hard to find, would be ideal for the future. But heading into next season, the Miami Dolphin's biggest concern should be: Who can we get in the secondary that is going to deliver the wood?
Posted by: Nathan Sullivan (Woodburn) | January 21, 2009 at 03:36 PM
oh, one more thing.d.thomas is not playing center. lol
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 03:39 PM
ndukwe sucks, alleman could be a decent backup and satale a good swing backup lineman at c and g,but might get traded.

Just when we were doing soo well go phins , you pull the rug right from under me. I bought up my boi louis cause I played against him in H.S. He went to North Miami Beach high and would love to see him back home playing for his dolphins.
Posted by: shanader | January 21, 2009 at 03:51 PM
Marcus, I don't think Raji fits the trifecta's prototype anyway. They like their lineman taller than 6-1. I think their cutoff is 6-3.
Posted by: Mr. Bungle | January 21, 2009 at 04:00 PM
My mention of Levitre and Miami's interest is as a guard first and a backup tackle after that.
I believe the Dolphins will try to re-sign Vernon Carey.
The problem on the OL in 2008 was the three interior guys. The tackles were good enough as a group but if you lose Carey, that becomes a pain for the draft because you are basically taking a step back from a position that was addressed in 2008 to having to address it in 2009 in addition to all the ones that needed addressing in 2008.
Do I explain myself somewhat clearly?
Posted by: Armando Salguero | January 21, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Armando, I think you're right about the tackle position. Is Carey worth top RT money and do you know what kind of money we are talking about?
I think the problem at RG and then LG really messed everyone up on the OL yet they were still able to compete. Imagine what the offense could do with a very good OL.
Posted by: Mr. Bungle | January 21, 2009 at 04:15 PM
But do you use a first day pick on depth? or on a more pressing need?

By the way, Wake was a non-NFL free agent so he could sign with an NFL team at any time. Great prediction on your part.

If the Dolphins re-sign Vernon Carey it will not be as depth and so it will not be a contract for a backup. It will be a big contract for a starting player. That's just the way it is. It won't be Jordan Gross big -- he's considered by most the best tackle about to enter FA. But it won't sound cheap to anyone either. If the Dolphins don't do it, someone else will.
By the way, the talk about Raji not being prototypical size -- hogwash. He's a good player and if he plays good, one or two inches isn't going to keep Miami from drafting him. And he is a classic 3-4 NT prospect.
One more guy to look at that has impressed at the Senior Bowl practice but is no secret to anyone is the center from Oregon ... Unger.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | January 21, 2009 at 05:39 PM
This is painful to read. For what it's worth, MONA was right - Andy Levitre just signed with the Dolphins this afternoon.

hey tinshaker, can you end your love affair with william moore now.from the senior bowl"looks like a lb,backpedals like a lb,and struggles in man coverege like a lb.so what is he? fee safety is out of the question'".
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 05:59 PM
go phins, since I haven't seen any of the North practices yet (I have todays waiting on my tivo) I will hold judgement on Moore based on one writer's opinion. I watched Moore play in about 12 games over his career and I saw a versatile player who could play free safety, as he did in 2007, and rover which he played in 2008. I saw Moore in the bowl game a few weeks ago, in overtime, sack the QB, force a fumble that was recovered by an off. lineman for a 15 yard loss, then on the next play he went deep in coverage and knocked down what would've been the game-winning touchdown. That on top of the 8 INT he had in 2007, and the 4int returned for TD in 2 years, plus the actual playing time I've watched, supports my claim that he is th best safety in the draft and one of the best all-around players available. And the only time I've mentioned him in weeks is right here in response to your comment and earlier when I got a similiar comment on another blog.
I have been talking up BJ Raji for a couple of months now, back when he was projected as a 3rd round pick. Today he is projected as the 6th overall pick.

Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 06:16 PM
tinshaker, who are you kidding?you've been talking about moore for weeks on the sun-sentinel blog.it was the opinion of many scouts and they've been working on his backpeddle which is terrible, all week.
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 06:21 PM
by the way i forgot to mention that your a miss. tiger.s fan .so you have a bias, don't let that blind reality.
Posted by: go phins | January 21, 2009 at 06:26 PM
go phins, I started talking about Moore back in October, what is your point? I didn't mention him today, or this week, or last week for that matter unless I was asked a direct question. Why does it offend you who I have on my radar?
As for "it was the opinion of many scouts", how many of these scouts told you their opinion? Oh, that's right, ZERO. As for his 'backpeddle', a free safety rarely has to backPEDAL. A cornerback backpedals. A free safety moves laterally across the field and sometimes has to run alongside a deep route or towards a slant. At no point does he have to backpedal when he is 20 yards in front of a receiver.
