Bell agrees to 4-year deal with Dolphins

Yeremiah Bell not only will remain with the Dolphins in 2009. He's remaining as their starting strong safety.

Bell just agreed to terms on a 4-year deal worth $20 million. Of that $20 million, a whopping $10 million is guaranteed.

Bell, Miami's leading tackler in 2009, is the second major signing in the deep secondary for the Dolphins today. Earlier today the team signed Gibril Wilson to a deal worth up to $27.5 million.

Do the math: Miami's deep secondary is now a $47.5 million expenditure with $18 million of that guaranteed money.

The Dolphins have told Bell he will continue to play strong safety while Wilson, who played free safety during his years with the Giants, will take over at free safety.

That, of course, means Renaldo Hill is going to be looking for work come the start of free agency. Hill was the starting free safety in 14 games last season.

As I made the point in a previous post, Wilson played free safety for the Giants during his stint there. But ultimately they deemed him expendable. The Raiders wanted him as a strong safety and didn't think he could make the move to free safety, so that and the salary cap situation got him cut there.

The 49'ers were interested in Wilson when he was cut but they need a free safety and decided Wilson is not suited for that position. So while Wilson will play free safety in Miami and Bill Parcells and Tuna Helper Jeff Ireland believe Wilson will be successful with the move, there are doubters around the NFL that think that's not going to work.

We'll see.

[Continue to check back as I will have more news for you as it happens. It's been a great day for this blog so far!]

fin fans,i have a question ,Do you thing chad.penne will break his own record of 4 interception on one game??
champs of crap 1-15

That is not the worst record ever...the 76 Bucs and 08 Lions went winless...The Dolphins do hold the best record at 17-0

The Jets went 1-15 in 1996

what did they do with that record and ne w england had 17-0 too.
champ this please

for ever and ever fins will be linked to loins and bucs as one the worst teams ever played pro football with proud record of 1-15

menace, where are you when we need you?

Pats lost the super bowl, they were not 17-0...they were 18-1...Jets are garbage...

souljabeats don't lie they are a half step up on the lions....the great thing we beat the jets to make the playoffs in chads home field....YO JETS FANS DID YOU KNOW THERE'S ONLY ONE NY TEAM... THE BILLS... AND YOU'RE THE ONLY TEAM THAT DONT HAVE A HOME....ALL THE BANNERS SAY JETS BUT YOU GO TO GIANTS STADIUM....IF IT WASN'T FOR FRIENDS YOU WILL BE HOMELESS...AND THE FANS THINK THEY GREAT CAUSE THEY HAVE A LITTLE 4 LETTER CHANT.... HOW CUTE... YOU'RE TEAMS SOFTER THAN NEW COACH BELLY.....

Ummm...we won a super bowl with that record loser.

souljahbeats,do you think HENNE will break PENNE record of 4 interceptions in onl one game????

Don't forget that before that game, the 2008 dolphins set the record for fewest turnovers in a season...chad had 7 and ya boy favre had...21?

Oh and 4 in one game??? Fiedler used to throw 4 or 5 a game like it was nothing....

you won super bowl 69 years ago with bad teams in that time and since then you are still the proud holder of worst record in NFL history of 1-15

Why does everybody feel the need to comment by saying first, and then that's it? That brings nothing to this blog. And wasn't Bell drafted as a Free Safety? If Wilson can't do it, then maybe Bell can. SS is a tougher position to play so the adjustment from SS to FS should be relatively easy for either of these guys. I would definitely give Wilson the chance to be the FS of the 2 because he has at least some ball hawking skills where Bell doesn't see to.

so you think 4 interceptions are no thing and that show how 1-15 make you feel now a days .champs of 1-15

ceed has very good point

Jets are a proud holder of a 1-15 record (1996) so are the pats (1990) so are the colts, panthers, cowboys, and alot of other teams

that is not true ,the only team who had 1-15 is dolphins.don't lie souljahbeats man and be a man

Dude the Jets last won in Super Bowl III...get back on your loser Jets boards with the other uneducated Jets fans.

YO FINS SUX;IF WE DO SUCK WHAT THE HELL ARE THE JETS? BEING THEY CAME IN 3RD PLACE

dol-fin dumbest is back with his dumb title AFC CLAMPIONS.

SOULJAHBEATS KILLING THEM JET FANS WITH THE FACTS.....

If you were me, MJZ, you'd be a lot better looking.

David E, that caller on 790 that "nailed my reporting" style was a family member of mine. I keep telling them to say nice things about me, but they refuse. By the way, my dog bites me every once in a while also.

I am better looking

Onto the live blog post, folks. It is up. Go get 'em while they're hot!

WATERBOY you need to recheck what you posted earlier:

Bell is out. Goodman will be retained

Posted by: Waterboy | February 26, 2009 at 09:38 AM

I was pretty close with this post yesterday:

Look for Bell to be signed within 12 hours and please please don't sign Hill. I recall him giving up a lot of big plays. I'd try to lock up Goodman too. I can see Coles in Miami and as for the Ravens players the Tuna has to be licking his chops if he truly has one of them (except leonhard)on radar. I don't think they will stand pat at Crowders position because after all the new Phins have all spots competing every year to play. Draft wise in no particular order: LB, OG, CB or WR with the first three picks

Love the moves so far!!

SUCK THIS 11-5

STOP DWELLING IN LAST YEAR THIS YEAR WE ARE AFC EAST CHAMPIONS

EVERY TEAM HIT ROCK BOTTOM BUT UNLIKE THE JETS AND LIONS THEY CLIMB OUT AND THAT'S WHAT THE AFC EAST CHAMPIONS DID GO FINS

1-15

Kellen Clemens...

chad.penne.......1234 interceptions

7 interceptions in the regular season...yes he threw 4 interceptions in a playoff game against a monster of a defense...where were the Jets??? sitting at home...You're boy Favre through plenty more than 4 ints...and Clemens will throw even more this year...especially with Wilson and Bell back there...

.......and then there was that time Favre tried to tackle that Dolphin D-Lineman......

Soulja and everybody else , how many times do i have to tell you . YOU"RE argueing with the cuban menace who's a big jets fan , He posts under different names to bust the chops of dolphin fans . DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. He's a f'n social parasite

what did you eat for dinner today souljahbeats?just to take easy for little bit.

Marc ,are you wearing pink tonight?

Fried Snapper, rice and beans...u?

it's funny you had fish while we were talking ,any way i had prime rib with roasted potatoes and swiss chard.BTW i hope you had good time talking non sense like me cause i am not a jet fan but i come on the blog once in awhile to laugh so that's it.

Awesome! Bell's too good a player to simply let go, and I trust Tuna and Tuna helper know what they're doing with Wilson. They trust him 27.5 mill. worth, so I trsut him. I'm looking foward to the fast and furios midnight blog!

it`s 10pm

Alright guys, I just wanted to let our fan base know that Jeff is in the process of getting Jason Brown signed at this time. Which will be our only major free agent signing.

This move gives us flexibility in the upcoming draft with three picks in the first two rounds. We will be able to add a pass rushing OLB, NT or CB...along with another weapon on offense...perhaps at WR or RB with these three picks. I also would not rule out adding another interior lineman (Guard).

Unfortunately the signing of Jason Brown will see us releasing RB Ricky Williams.

That is where we currently stand. Have a good evening fellas.

Sincerely
Bill Parcells

i think we gotta address NT, C/G, and CB more than anything... if we could get one of those BC DT's that would be good.. one of them will definately be gone by 25th...the other one could slip into the second rd which would be a good spot to grab them. If we cant get Jason Brown or matt birk or some quality C in FA i think we gotta draft one within the 1st or 2nd round.. CB can wait till later in the draft IMO.. NT, C, G, OLB/DE whatever the best available is when they pick.

Wow are you guys stupid or just pretending?

You guys talking about Wilson being a bust for the Raiders at FS???

You call 129 Tackles at FS for Oakland bad???

The guy has had 100+ tackles in every season he's played more than 15 games. And in his other two seasons, he would have had 100+ tackles if he would have played the entire season... I think it is a great duo of safeties.

And to you haters, who are complaining about the Yeremiah Bell resigning... I take it you didn't watch many Dolphin games this past season. He was all over the place. The guy deserves that money.

You guys talk about that he's been injured often, but hasn't Bob Sanders?? yet he gets paid 948740 million a year with no complaints.

yea i dont know if people dont watch football or what but Gibril wilson has played both FS and SS...alot of defenses arent typical SS and FS positions anymore...you see alot of "2 DEEP" coverage where both safties are kinda split and covering their respective sides deep. James butler is the NYG FS..Kenny Phillips was drafted to replace Gibril wilson as the "SS".... back 05 or 06 when the giants had Gibril Wilson and Will Demps..Demps was the listed FS and gibril wilson was the SS...but as i said before it wasnt a typical "8 in the box style" it was alot of 2 deep...
bottom line is hes a versatile safety.. can play both roles.

The Jets & Pats are getting stronger. We need to make some more moves to keep pace. We need to zero in on a #1 WR, Center, NT, LB. Possibly getting Coles doesn't have me that excited. We need to keep pace with our division.

What is Jeremiah Bell's latest 40 yard dash time. send to midkiffm@bellsouth.net
