Coles good but not at $6 million a year

The AFC East Division rival New York Jets should have a much improved defense by the time the weekend is over.

The Jets have already signed versatile inside linebacker Bart Scott for $48 million. They're completing a trade for Philly cornerback Lito Sheppard by sending the Eagles a fifth-round draft pick. They're trying to sign strong safety Jim Leonhard and cornerback Cory Ivy from the Ravens.

So what does this all mean? The Jets will likely be better on defense next season. And the Dolphins have to get better on offense to match the moves.

But does adding receiver Laveranues Coles do the trick? I don't think so. Not at his current price, anyway.

The local infatuation with Coles is good radio talk fodder. It's good blog escape. And it's one more thing: Ridiculous.

If this was 2004 instead of 2009, I would understand the longing for Coles. But it is, indeed, 2009 and I predict Coles is shortly about to find out he is very much over-estimating his worth on the open market. Coles is reportedly looking for a contract that pays him at least $6 million per season.

The problem for him is most NFL teams will not pay a No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver that kind of money this offseason. I think Coles got the first taste of that reality Friday when the Bills let him walk from their facility without a contract.

Coles, 31, used to run consistent 4.3s and sometimes break into the stunning 4.2 range when he was young. But he no longer has that explosive speed and that has shown for a while. Look at the tape of him against San Francisco last season when he simply could not get open.

Coles averaged about 14 yards per catch early in his career. Now he's an 11-12 yards per catch guy. That's what Greg Camarillo averaged last season. Coles is a possession guy now ...

... and one that is not ascending.

Is he tough? Yes. Is he courageous on the field and in staying out of the training room? Yes. Does he have good balance and athletic ability? Yes. Is he a willing blocker? Yes.

But none of that makes him a No. 1 receiver. And that makes his asking price absurd.

The Dolphins know this -- I hope. And so they are staying away. Reports of Coles being in Miami Thursday were wrong. He has not visited the team and, in fact, could not do so as an unrestricted free agent until Friday. And again, he was in Buffalo Friday.

But the Dolphins are watching and waiting, believing the price for Coles will drop and drop and drop. When he's in the more modest $3 million per year range, Miami's interest may, and I stress it is only may, become legitimate, assuming another team doesn't commit to the crazy money first.

But as long as Coles continues to think he commands $6 million per season, the Dolphins should not touch him regardless of how tight he is with quarterback Chad Pennington and despite the fact he was drafted by Bill Parcells nine years ago.

Coles's former team, meanwhile, is making some interesting moves on D.

The signing of Bart Scott will pair him with David Harris on the inside. New coach Rex Ryan believes that is a recipe for confusing defenses because both players can play the SILB spot and both can play the WILB spot. (S denotes strong side and W denotes weak side.)

"I think the flexibility we have with David Harris and Bart Scott is just going to be difficult to identify who the mike is," Ryan said Friday night in a conference call with reporters. "It doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but, trust me, it is. The offense is setting protections against a mike linebacker. If they can't find him, that's going to give them some problems, and I think those two guys right there are going to be quite a pair.

"When you look at our linebacking corps overall, we probably have as good of a linebacking corps as there is in this league, probably right up there with Baltimore and really anybody else."

Eric, what 3 crucial guys are you talking about that they did not sign? I really hope you are not talking about the two cb's that constantly got burnt up against big receivers. They were decent cb but neither was a shut down corner by any means. Did you watch all of the games last year? I know part of them giving a 15 yd cushion on a #2 and #3 receiver was bc the dline didnt get a good pressure on the qb consistantly. Going from 1-15 to 11-5 the afc east champs and the play offs, how can you question what the upper management is doing? Why aren't you in the front office? To the point you made about signing a player like Gabril Wilson that was cut by Al Davis, have you not seen or heard Al lately? Firing your coach mid-season, holding a press confrence to throw him under the bus, having 5 coaches in the past 5 years, signing ridiculous contracts and not getting players to preform. He is past him prime and probably doenst know where he is. Your points are mute.

Matt Cassel to Chiefs, just announced on NFL Network. He will sign a new contract. They not sure on compensation for NE. THey also have $15 million in cap room now

Dolphins = The Cheapness. Brown, Scott, & whoever's next to pass on Miami. Sad, but this is the beginning of the end of the Parcells resurgence. But Hey! We've got Berger!!

The good that would come from signing Coles is the familiarity between Chad P and Coles. He is tough and they do need an older receiver to help develope the young receivers in Bess, Camarillo, Ginn, and London. That being said there is a reason the Bills let him walk. He is not worth the 6 million cap space that he is wanting but 3 million possibly. Someone made a comment on Ricky, they would trade him as Parcells knows he has value before they would just cut him.

MOOT , not mute . Ncphinfan

nc fin fan, AL Davis is so old his birth certificate is etched in stone,if you wanted to see a picture of AL when he was a toddler you'd have to go to the cave's in the south of France, he was the inventor of fire,he witnessed the big bang, his place of birth was Pangaea,he was the head task master on the pyramids,he invented the wheel,he's old dude...

I guess with the trading of cassel tom brady must be progressing better then the pundits have been saying, that's bad news for the afc east...

Menace,

Al Davis has liver spots that are older than me

bad news for all the n.f.l .............

al's so old he was born with gills,he's so old his first house was in a tree, his proms theme was fire,he knew adam and eve,he was born with a tail, i"ve got hundreds of these....

Does anyone else think Matt Cassel is pretty?

Whats the chance the dolphins pick up shawn spring? We need a shut down corner. He is one of the best out there.

al's so old he got his first hummer from a t- rex..... OUCH....

According to SI the PATs traded Cassel and Vrabel for the Chief's 2nd pick.

Not as bad as I feared, but we'll see who they sign with the $14+ mil they just freed up.

Armando- any reason why the Fins couldn't have gotten involved in the Lito Shepard trade. you could never have enough CBs. and for only a 5th.

ncfinfan: I would have signed Carey and Wilson but not Crowder and Bell. The Pats now have a ton of cap room to play with.

Also- I am betting Cassel doesn't look so good away from NE. I still think he may be another scott mitchell. I think this move actually helps the fins because as over blown as cassel was he still was their 2nd qb, knew the plays and was decent not great- who comes in now if brady gets hurt, a very distinct possibilty in this league after that type of injury.

One question for Jets fans.....where was Bart Scott when the Ravens didnt have Ngata....remember Ray Lewis demanding the front office to draft a NT 2 yrs ago.
Lets see how good Scott is without Ray Lewis , Terrell Suggs, Ngata, and oh yeah Ed Reed !
You guys overpaid once again for a mediocre player.....he is just a system fill-in for Rex Ryan.
NO TO COLES , PAST HIS PRIME.

I pray Coles, the Fin killer signs with Oakland or Detroit.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if NE signed him, as insurance for Welker...of 2 million.

Meant "for" 2 million.

I agree with the no name blogger, matt cassel was lucky to be on a team that the previous year was 17 and 1, i think you would've put in the monkey that attacked that lady up north a couple weeks ago and he would have succeeded, my point is if brady goes down again it's still a formable team....

a great team with a healthy brady for the entire year..

BIFF, sheppard was traded for a 2009 5th AND a cond 2nd rounder in 2010. Sheppard is overrated !!

Cuban menace is back to his old form ,don' stopiiiiii

Cassel is a QB
Penne is a interception QB
Henne is a future interception QB
Berger who is he????

ON this blog we talk all the time about players who just back ups or can fill gaps or may be they are going to be good in next 2 years or players going to lead in the locker room or players are good guys even if they are old.NEVER any real star to change the average to the elite.BERGER Who is he??

nj phin fan i knew we were going to debate again. THE OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO COVER THE TE OR RUNNINGBACK COMING OUT OF THE BACKFIELD THUS MAKING THEM SUPPOSEDLY SIDELINE TO SIDELINE PLAYERS. THE 3-4 USUALLY HAS SOME OF THE MOST ATHLETIC PLAYERS PLAYING OLB. WITH THAT SAID I THINK WE BOTH AGREE THAT ROTH IS NOT A VERY ATHLETIC PLAYER BUT HE CAN CONSISTENTLY PLAY THE OLB POSITION BECAUSE HE'S 6'4 AND YOU HAVE RB'S OR FB'S THAT ARE WEAKER TRYING TO BLOCK HIM. (MISTAKE BY OTHER TEAMS). SO EVEN IF ILB IS A SIDELINE TO SIDELINE POSITION ROTH IS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF GOING SIDELINE TO SIDELINE. LIKE I SAID BEFORE I'M NOT SAYING HE WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE ILB BUT HE WOULD DO BETTER THAN AYODELE DID. AND WHENEVER CROWDER HAS TO BE OUT LIKE THE CHIEFS GAME LAST YEAR WE WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT RB'S RUNNING OVER US IN THE MIDDLE. PLUS YOU WANT THE MIDDLE BLOCKED SO THAT THE PLAYER HAS TO BOUNCE BACK AND ATTEMPT TO GO OUT OR SIDELINE TO SIDELINE.

I Agree with monkey in fact i have the feeling like we have a used car dealership not a pro Nfl team

eric is a jets fan; you can tell because he sounds jealous.

all of you people have to stop criticizing the dolphins. the answers are not in free agency or trades! its all about the draft! look at the last two years of superbowl champs! pure bread players.

New post is up. Please go there to continue the in-depth analysis you guys typically bring to the comments section.

my dear dolphins;
I Am writing today since i had a bad dream last night,
in it i saw that 1- bell will not start but 6 games all season
2-Berger will win starting job but still have no effect on any game.
3 -fins start season with chad.P then after 1-3HENNE starts with his first 2 interceptions in his first start.
4 -fin fans turn on team like Pit Bulls.
5-team ends season w/5-11.
6-BP departs to lovely JETS .
7-mando becomes very happy man due to fins demise.

Eric, I agree they should not have signed Crowder. Crowder was a good punch with a dominate LB. With him being the main stud he is just slighly above average. Does not make big plays just tackles when people run into him. I know he was second on the team in tackles but he should be number 1. Bart Scott would have been a nice addition. Again they are making the desicions not you and I.

I'd much rather see Miami sign Chris Canty. It gives them a lot of roster flexibility. Instead of carrying Dotson and Wright. Keep Lanford, Merling, Canty, Holiday and Starks. Not sure I've seen very much from Dotson and Wright to carry them along any more. Use teh additional roster spot for the development in other areas; CB, LB, NT.

How in the world thet Jets get Sheppard for a 5th round pick?

How in the world thet Jets get Sheppard for a 5th round pick?

Hey Mando,
I am sick of hearing about How Good the Jets, Patriots and everyone else are going to be. Just give us the news and if you don't like the Fins just leave town dude. Seriously. You have been acting like a know it all lately and you are making an arse out of yourself.

I am a Jet fan from NYC. I was against the Jets releasing Pennington and I am against them releasing Coles. In my mind the release of chad last year cost us the playoffs.

As a Jet fan who has watched both Chad and Coles play together I will tell you that signing Coles would be a beautiful move for the phins. You have Chad and Chad is a winner. The key to his game is simple, give him time to throw the ball (with a a great line)and he will win games for you. When he is healthy, he wins.

Coles is a tough as they come. He goes over the middle, goes up high, he is a great blocker and he has great hands. In the red zone he and Chad are a thing of beauty. wait until you see the first fade in the back corner of the endzone.

Coles will make both Ginn and Camarillo better.

Considering all of the talent the AFC EAST has been getting, Miami has been pretty stupid. They have done NOTHING to upgrade the team. All they did was resign the same bunch of scrubs we had last season. NOTHING to improve the team. Then we sign some third string backup to play center???? Miami seems to be thinking more about last year, and the success they had than the failures of the playoffs and what their division counterparts are doing. If they think they are just going to build in the draft, and ignore free agency to get veterans they need a wake up call. I see them falling bad this season unless they start getting off their butts and getting some REAL talent on the field with the nucleas they already have. Instead of signing other peoples garbage that they, or other teams dont even want.

armando screw the jets they will always suck...the dolphins will get coles at there price your'll see and look for goodman to return in the coming days as well.

Armando, I heard Coles visited yesterday and that (it's been reported) he will chose between the Dolphins and the Bills today? What's the good word, fine sir?

WAIT HIM OUT, HE WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO OUR OFFENSE!!! THEN WE COULD CONCENTRATE ON THE SECONDARY PROBLEM IN THE DRAFT!!! BUT GET COLES SIGNED!!!

Why do we even post things on this blog?

I have posted non-offensive comments and had them removed.

It seems that if you disagree with Supermondo that your opinions don't count.

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG!!!!!
