Live free agency blog at midnight!

Free agency begins this evening and we're going to celebrate two ways: I'm going to give you some information while also hang out with you starting at midnight for about an hour.

The information I have for you is that the Dolphins are going to be aggressive during this free agency period. A club source tells me they have a couple of guys they like and they're going to bring those guys in starting Friday. So the Dolphins could have their first wave of free agency signing(s) Friday afternoon sometime.

It will be very, very, very interesting to see if soon-to-be-former Baltimore center Jason Brown is one of those guys. Make no mistake, the Dolphins like this guy a lot and have been inquiring about him and doing their due diligence on him.

But part of that due diligence is understanding what the guy is looking for in free agency. And if he is serious about getting $7-$8 million per year, that just might be too rich for the Dolphins to stomach. They can afford it, make no mistake. But it would adversely affect the club salary structure in which the center would be making as much, or more, than the right tackle. That is hard for a team to justify.

Moreover, Brown rexpects to be chased by the free-spending Washington Redskins or the St. Louis Rams who have had no issues in the past with throwing money around. So my free Miami-Dade Public Schools education tells me the Dolphins address the center-right guard position, but they do it with someone else in free agency, someone not quite so expensive.

... And then get another crack at it the spot in the draft, too. Remember Tony Sparano believes you can never have too many linemen.

This is not to suggest Brown doesn't like the idea of playing for the Dolphins.

"Bill Parcells definitely knows football," Brown said in an interview that will appear in Friday's edition of the Carroll County Times. "He's definitely doing the fundamental things it takes to build a winner and you can see that ... You can see how Parcells has turned that thing around."

Brown also likes the idea of moving his family to South Florida for the next five or six years.

"There's lots of beautiful beaches, retirement communities, and it can be pretty laid back," he said. "Me and my wife would fit in with that."

But in the next instant, Brown talks of liking the idea of staying in the Baltimore-D.C. area, too. It is closer to his native North Carolina, so there is a comfort zone there. And again, the Redskins or Rams are likely to bring money quickly -- as early as 12:01 a.m.

I'm not saying the Dolphins won't make a push, but it just looks like they're not the big favorite in this deal.

Anyway, come back for the midnight live blog. If worse comes to worse and nothing happens, we'll just hang out for a bit. You guys don't have anything else to do, right?

Been a while...I've been crazy busy @ work. I would like to say "I told you so" to everyone. We signed the big 3 I was pulling for, and looks like the rest of the scrubs will be gone. As I also recommended. First time in YEARS I'm not second-guessing staff decisions...FA is already a success in my opinion. Any other contributors we get are icing...I'm very pleased.

Oh yeah, good job Mandy. Been catchin' up. The 'iron curtain' bit was a little too much like a woman scorned, or disgruntled worker ;)

See ya @ 10pm

Never heard Winston Churchill described as a woman scorned.

Should be an exciting evening

great ill try to be on @ 11 my time but only for a little while

the brown family going to move to south florida next to the ted ginn family.

who do u think we should draft

The trifecta has come through so far! Now we will be free to draft a wide receiver, cornerback and a couple linebackers in the draft!!!!

Things are coming together and it only took 2 years!

Oh yeah, and love your blog Mando, thanks for the great info!

fsudolphins 13: I think they'll draft an OLB and WR for certain among their first three picks. That guy Connor Barwin in the third round sounds good to me. The OLB English from Northern Illinois is a good bet.

I've got to step away and take care of some bidness gents. I'll be back at midnight.

ight thnx for the insight

i think we should pick up greg carr in the 6th or 7th round
he's 6-6 and has great leaping ability with good hands
he isn't very fast though but that can be improved and who knows maybe the next fitsgerald

i hear that armando is watching police academy 5 right now,is it a good movie?

I'll try to stay up...

Do we still have that receiver from the Cowboys that was on "Hard Knocks" with the Cowboys? I just remember the asst coaches raving about his natural hands and athleticism (he was scary fast). He had been a b-ball player or something.

You've never heard Churchill referred to as a woman scorned? Hell, I don't even know who Winston Churchill was

Armando do you like English more than FSU Everette Brown? Or dont you think Brown will be there?

mando do you have any cats?

Whats up Mando? It's being reported that Coles is looking for big money, my question is can we hook him with an incentive laced contract (like the one master p got ricky with the saints...lol)? I mean this guy can play with penny and fits in well with our core guys. Or should we try to build in the draft and hope greg c., best and ginn come around? Oh, what in the heck are we gonna do with Wilford? Can we get any of the dough back?

I've been working alot but I still read every night.

Greg Carr isn't even a DEADman's Larry Fitz', let alone a poorman's Fitz'. And I aint sayin' that just cause I'm a Cane fan.

Ok. Compare salarys in Washington D.C. Vs Miami Florida. IF Brown wants 7-8 mil TAXED what equivlant is that to UNTAXED (state) dollars? Would $6 mil untaxed be equal to 7 or 8 mil taxed. SURELY the Trifecta uses this approach when offering contracts to FA Player's angents. OR is this NOT a factor?
Thnx for all you do for us.
Mike W

What the hell's up with Adam Shefter taking cheapshots at Willis McGahee?

I'll slap the sheet outta' homeboy!!

umm have u seen greg carr play??
he's a beast just too slow for the scouts
BTW i actually like the canes @ #2

i agree with u we should take brown if hes available b/c he is such a good pass rusher and that would help tremendously

I get so tired of hearing how the Redskins are going to sign EVERY high-priced free agent out there...they also stick too.

I work for a firm in D.C., but I'm a resident of Florida so I don't pay income taxes. Brown can do the same thing I do. Live in Florida while working for a business in D.C.-Washington Redskins.

D.C. is on the east and the redskins are on the west sry

armando, what is your favorite dolphins player and why?
second question, why people think you have an easy job when you have to deal with all these people w/limited brain cells?
thank you .

the point is, you don't have to pay income taxes if you're a resident of Florida but working for a company that is located in a state that collects income tax. so trying to pitch players on taking less money because playing in Florida gives one a tax advantage is a bogus argument.

What do you think the cap actually look like at this point. I know they can do some funny stuff with these salaries but I also know the uncapped year to come changes the rules a bit this offseason in regards proration and to be earned incentives.

Any idea?

im just saying the redskins are in washington state not D.C.

I think alot of people are forgetting about what is very likely to happen NEXT year to our team in terms of players. If the Dolphins run their salaries to the last penny of the cap, next year, they'll be able to recoup it and they know it.

For instance the following players I would bet will be gone and replaced because of age or productivity:

1. Jason Allen
2. Jason Ferguson
3. Ernest Wilford
4. Vonnie Holliday
5. Ricky Williams
6. Reggie Torbor/Charlie Anderson
7. Chad Pennington

What do you think Mando? How much would we get back if we cut all these guys next year and had younger/drafted guys take their spots?

PFT is reporting a rumor about the Dolphins being interested in WR Marvin Harrison. That doesn't make much sense with Parcells' style as Harrison's 35 years old. At least Laverneus Coles is only 31 years old, and has established chemistry with Chad Pennington.

im not sure ricky and chad will be gone next yr

lol... the Redskins aren't in Washington state... wrong time zone... you're thinking of the seattle seahawks fsu.

sounds like a bunch of morons

ya i realized that afterward
i feel dumb

Have you heard anything about the Phins eyeing Phillip Buchanon?

It's oky to be a moron if you are a fin fan in fact it's demanded of you

haha very funny jose

u should go listen to the jet fans

Do you think Kevin Brooks would interest the Dolphins?

I don't think the redskins have very much cap space...they are also supposed to be going after Haynesworth...No way they can get Haynesworth and Brown...I think we wake up tomorrow to find out Jason Brown is a Dolphin...

You'll like the JACK DUNNIE

I typed it up earlier and represents the oldest players on the team regardless of talent. I tend to agree with your post.

Look at it this way. We have about 65 players under contract, 9 draft picks, FAs and undrafted guys. There is no chance we roll with all the guys we have on the current roster. The numbers just don't work. Youth is the one constant these guys have shown so lets look at the oldest players on the team.

Ferguson, Jason 11/28/74
Obviously won't be going anywhere but could he restructure?

Denney, John 12/13/78
Only a matter of time before they find someone that can play a base position as well as long snap.

Holliday, Vonnie 12/11/75
As stated I think he is done even if he took a cut. Youth being the key here.

Martin, David 3/13/79
If they're in a position to address the position later in the draft I see it as a target for them.

Porter, Joey 3/22/77
Not going anywhere this year but his salary demands production.

Ayodele, Akin 9/17/79
He's a Parcells guy and not going anywhere this year but sooner or later a younger player will challenge him.

Thomas, Joey 9/29/80
Once again a situation where youth could replace him in the draft.

Williams, Ricky 5/21/77
If Cobbs continues to impress and we address RB with youth Rickey could easily be left in the dust by us this time around.

Allen, Will 8/5/78
Luckily for Will he had an okay year and CB is our lightest position. Its only a matter of time.

Wilford, Ernest 1/14/79
I still say he could be on the way out sooner rather than later if they need the cap space. I think he represents 4 mil in cap space this year and if released we'd on get 2.5 back. Don't hold me on those numbers but I'm pretty sure the difference in cap space would be -1.5 mil. Either way 2.5 on a new player compared to 4 mil to sit someone on the bench has to be a better option.

Pennington, Chad 6/26/76
I'd love to see them add a year to his deal and create some cap room. We could go with Henne in 2010 but still have Pennington as an insurance policy.

the word moron means in fact in real english is FIN FAN

we wouldnt touch harrison if he were free

The tax law doesn't merely apply to where you live... yes that is a part of it, but you pay tax on where you earn income as well... for football players, a good portion of their income is earned outside their state of residence.

If you live in florida but work in another state, you still should be filing a return with the other state as a non resident.

The tax argument to a football player may not be as clear cut as some would think.

Sprovo...can you please find for us all dolphins players birth days, their weeding dates, their mothers birth days and their favorite pet.this way we can see if we will have enough salary cap.come on man are you crazy?

Mando, Mando, Mando!!!

PFT is reporting Marvin Harrison could land in Miami. Any truth to that???

I find it hard to beleive tho because of his age, thats not parcells style.

sprovo gave us more info in one shot than mando gave us in one year.
what the hell

sprovo , How many times do we have to read this same meaningless post, LOL. Denny is a great long snapper who doesn't make that much money and teams don't use people from the base position because of fear of injury. Thomas ,lol he won't even be on the team ( also doesn't make any money ). Penny ,porter ,martin , ayodele ( 29 ) are still only 31-32 years old who have valuable leadership skills and plenty of football left. Also williams doesn't make big money. You can't have a all young team. Geez, i think the sun and heat is getting to you.

jose manuel rod

Actually, yes I am crazy. That was nothing and if you give me 20 I'll have all that info for you, haha.

So, what do we feel the Dolphins chance of getting a receiver from FA? No doubt they'll draft one, even if they do get a WR from FA, but still. Does Parcells want to reunite Coles and Penny? Or form a new bond with an experienced receiver?

like this?

do mock draft dude...i dont like your blogs very much but u know theyre worth reading so like yea do a nock draft to see wat u think will happen in april

washington is apparently going to sign every free agent out there.

Hey nj fins fan, flip off any Jets fans yet today, haha.

I read today that the release of Ricky would create 3.5 mil in space. 29,30,31,32 year old guys are the first to be shaved when we have young players mature. The trifecta are known for their drafting so those were only the most likely players to make their way off the roster.

SPROVO,please if you have any other list put it up here.BTW did you ever had any surgery on you brain ?if your answer is yes mark here and if it's no go and have ice cream.

State income tax: State income tax is withheld depending on the location it is earned. Texas, Washington,
Florida and Tennessee currently have no state income tax. Other states tax income on rates as low as 3%
(Illinois) to as high as 9.3% (California). Road games require state withholding based upon two days of
earnings in that particular state.
