Miami Dolphins eying Ravens in free agency

And you thought the Dolphins were done with the Ravens after the playoffs last season?

In fact the Dolphins are monitoring the Ravens this week as two and perhaps three possible free agents from that team are Miami targets, in varying degrees, when free agency begins Feb. 27.

The Dolphins like linebacker Bart Scott, center Jason Brown and strong safety Jim Leonhard, according to an NFL source. But the source says it is unlikely the Dolphins will get more than one of those players -- at most -- because of other circumstances, not related to Miami, that are currently at play.

The source said no team, including the Dolphins, are likely to land both Brown and Scott because one of them is likely to return to Baltimore as a newly minted re-signed player before the end of this week. It should be noted that agent Harold Lewis represents both Brown and Scott and he recently told the Baltimore Sun he was negotiating with the Ravens on deals for both.

"My gut feeling is one of the two is going to hit free agency and the other one will probably sign," Lewis told the Sun. "That's just my gut."

Make no mistake here, the Dolphins hold both in high regard.

Scott is the explosive, running back-hungry inside linebacker the team wants. He's big at 6-2 and 240. He's quick. He's a great run-blitzer and is often effective when blitzing on passing downs. He also has excellent instincts.

If there is a downside on Scott it is that he will command a high price and there will be plenty of competition for his services, including within the AFC East. He is also 28 years old, which is slightly older than what is optimal in Miami's eyes.

Brown, 26 in May, is more attractive from an age standpoint. He has size at 6-3 and 320. He has a reputation for being tenacious. He is durable, having started every game the past two seasons -- he was the only Baltimore lineman to start every game in 2007. And he has started as both a left guard and a center during his career.

Leonhard is the least likely of the three the Dolphins would land because, frankly, he's probably headed to the New York Jets anyway.

Speaking of the Jets, the hiring of Rex Ryan as head coach is not exactly a good thing for the Dolphins. It says a lot that Ryan is a Bill Parcells protege' and has the Big Tuna's respect. In fact, Ryan was among the coaches interviewed when Big Tuna was lining up his Tuna Helpers in 2008.

So how does Ryan's presence in New York affect the Dolphins?

Immediately, Ryan will be adding talent he's familiar with and that means Ravens players. The scuttlebutt in league circles is that Leonhard, who started for the Ravens and was the object of some man love from some of the posters on here, is on New York's free agent radar.

Not coincidently, the Jets are also interested in Scott, which might cause another problem for Miami.

Leonhard, you'll recall, had an interception in the playoff game against Miami. And yes, the Ravens, with Ryan as their defensive coordinator, beat the Dolphins twice last season. Doesn't mean Ryan is more likely to beat the Dolphins while with the Jets. But he obviously understood Miami's offensive weaknesses.

Question is, can the Jets afford Scott? I don't think they can, unless they skimp at quarterback.

I think if Jason Brown is available Friday, he should be our only target from the Ravens. I think we can fill linebacker through the draft... Leonhard can go to the Jets if he wants... He's not better than Bell or Hill anyway... Hill would have been running with ints too if he had Ed Reed (Super Man) playing next to him... He's solid but no one to get into a bidding war over...

First,

It would be awesome if we could land either one of these two (Scott or Brown). Both are very talented players. Landing Brown would turn our OLine to perhaps one of the best units in the league. Landing Scott would toughen up our run defense & finally add a playmaker (besides Porter) which is something that we definately need. Crowder was solid but he's no Scott!

Bye Bye crowder, hate to see you go!!! l.m.f.a.o.

Next up for deletion is Ted (no testicular fortitude)Ginn and his clip board holding daddy...

Jason Brown should be the top priority. He is particularly good against a 3-4. He would represent a significant upgrade in the OL. Bart Scott is a good player but I think he has been helped by the fact that he has played with so many good LBs. Scott has never had to be "the man" on the Ravens D. I would not break the bank for him.

fsudolphin, I stand by what i say, e.g hands of stone looks for the side line.. not the 1st down marker, # 2 if a defender is with in 10 yards he'll catch the ball and go straight down, #3 if a defender is with in 5 yards , he wont catch the ball.. the proof? he dropped 12 balls thrown to him in the middle and when a defender was closing in he'd drop it or he'd trip over his 2 own feet(hence , feet of clay) the man has no testicular fortitude(e.g fitzgerald, bolden, moss, etc.etc.) he will never have it. with that being said a true stud is camerello and Devon Bess. there not scarred to go over the middle , that's why I'm so hard on hands of stone, cause he wont make the tough catch. some where down the road it will bite the fish on the bottom side..

If we only have one choice then. Bart Scott is the man.we should go after him.How would we look with JOEY,SCOTT,ROTH,and WARD.We would be unstoppable a sack machine.Yes his 28 but that still gives us about 4 to 5 good years.

There is a lot of centers coming out in the draft this year.So not getting Brown would not hurt us so much.

As for Ryan I feel bad for him because the jets is were coaches go to SUCK!!!!!!!.He won't be able to turn them around because a loser is always a loser.welcome to the pain of the afc east.

Cuban menace, i didn't get what you just said so can you please say it again and don't forget to include crowder in the comment and who you think is better fit for our team to draft WR or LB?

I want all three of these players. We must do everything we can to sign all of them. Jason Brown is my main target and I would be willing to pay anything to get him.

Matt asks if the Jets can afford these guys. The Jets have as much, if not more, salary cap space as the Dolphins.

They gained $13 million of cap relief when Favre retired and they've made half a dozen cost-cutting moves (restructing Kerry Rhodes and Calvin Pace, cutting former Dolphins David Bowens among them) that added another $20 million or so in space for them. That's about $33 million total.

They have TONS of cap room.

You make some solid points Ken. If we had to choose between Scott and Brown I would err on the side of Brown. As Mando said he is younger and I think will be cheaper than what Scott commands. Our starting O-line would be set and with good depth. It would be easier to address the LB corps in the draft than the few select C's that are worth anything each year. Plus we are looking to get bigger at C and the names Mando dropped earlier were all close to 300 lbs. It should be all Brown come Friday.

it's very important fact living or moving to florida is cheeper right NOW than most recent times and even with armando good points of jets plenty of Cap money i would think players rather come to florida than going to so called the garden state.one more point i have the feel that tuna will draft as first pick a WR and remember he can get DL player with not much money but not WR.

Alex, who's ward ? Do you mean wake ? also the jets just cut the starting te Chris baker and starting guard brandon moore and lb david harris , freeing up more than 12 mil in cap space . They also got around 12 mil after favre retiring . Word is they're going after both scott and leonard, while balt is working real hard to re-sign brown . I don't think miami is getting any one of these guys.

Wow what a move by the colts. I wonder when the Patriots will release Marvin Harrison? Ha.

Brown is our best bet if we can get him, i would rather have brown. I think he will have an immediate impact for us with long, smiley, carey will add a nice combination. We should solidify our running game with this combo. If we can get both, then damn, we will fill a couple of key holes with nine draft picks. we can focus on other areas. GO Phins

If we sign Jason Brown our O-line would be set for years and we could focus on defense in the draft...If we don't land brown, I would like to see us draft a center in the 1st or 2cnd round...

I meant bowens instead of harris and they also cut cb davis barrett , the jets have plenty of money. sorry to say

Any chance that this talk of replacing Samson could just be a smokescreen? I remember last year Parcells sounded like he wanted Jason Taylor shortly before trading him. Was that due to JT's lack of desire to play for him, or did Tuna intend to trade him all along? Pretty interesting.....Either way, I could see Samson improving with another year in the system/conditioning program (remember Cams program relied on machine weights, etc., Tuna's is the basics-squats, cleans, etc.), and with stability at both guard spots, Carey and Samson should have better than average seasons. What if they're just faking interest to drive up player costs? Baltimore is in free agent hell and a tough rival, not to mention the Jests are in the mix too.

Either all that or Samson sucks.....

Also, my gut tells me Bart is out of the question due to age. It also tells me to get a beer....

Brown all the way !!! The O'line should be the priority. The d'line and linebackers on the dolphins are flushed with talent, it's just trying them out and getting them in the right positions. With the O-line making holes for our 3 headed monster, all of a sudden, they defenses are loading the box, our receivers are getteing open on single coverage, even wilford's open, lol, and the scoreboard will be lit up. The defense always plays better with a lead

CUBAN MEN. DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A WR IN THE NFL. YOU ARNT GOING TO CATCH EVERY BALL (HENCE T.O., JERRY RICE, ETC.) NOT SAYING GINN IS IN THIS CLASS OF WR'S AT LEAST NOT YET. THIS GUY HAS HAD ONE YEAR UNDER PB AND ONE YEAR FROM CC. LIKE THEY SAY IT TAKES ABOUT 3 YEARS TO DEVELOP A WR. YOU MUST HAVE MISSED THAT HIGHLIGHT REEL OF A CATCH WHEN HE CAME BACK AND SPLIT 2 DEFENDERS AND MADE A GREAT CATCH. OR WHEN HE MADE THAT IMPOSSIBLE TD. CATCH IN THE END ZONE. PS REMEMBER WHO IS THROWING THE BALL TO HIM IN COLLAGE IT WAS WHO TROY SMITH, 1ST YEAR IN MIAMI JOHN BECK AND 2ND YEAR CHAD CANT THROW THE LONG BALL PENN. SO GET OF THE GINN HATING BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO BE SADDLY MISTAKIN IN THE NEXT 2 - SEASONS WITH THIS GUY. PS. I LIVE IN OHIO AND THIS KID LIT IT UP AT OHIO STATE. NOW 1 ST PRIORITY AFTER LOCKING CAREY UP GO GET BROWN IN FA. PB AND COMPANY ARE GETTING IT RIGHT IF YOUR LINES (OFFENSE AND DEFENSE) ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GET IT DONE THEN THE REST OF YOUR TEAM WILL NOT DO VERY WELL. SURE UO THE LINES FOR THE NEXT 4-8 YEARS AND LETS WIN SUPER BOWLS.

Brown is the guy we prob get and that's great. Scott sounds good but is he really good as he looks. Playing with Lewis,Suggs,Reed,Ngata not to mention their corners would make anyone look good. Leonhard played back in our first meeting with Ravens last year with Reed playing up cause of an injury. We had success down field on him. Mistake fins made was in playoffs Reed was back healthy and we continued to try to throw downfeild which pretty much the reason we got killed in that game.M Burk going be fa center fins could also take a shot at. He's older than Brown but still good for a few years. There's plenty of good centers coming out in draft.I still think DT is our biggest concern. Haynesworth sure would look good in a fins uniform

4-12 with Brown.

According to rich cimini of the daily news the jets have freed up 32.5 mil in cap space with another 5 mil when brandon moore officially gets released today. He says the jets and rex ryan are going si gn either scott or lewis ( 1 of them } and jim leonard. I also read that bal is working round the clock to sign brown. Looks we're not getting any of them

5-11 W/Brown and Scott both.

trickey, i guessed you missed the play off game vs. the ravens, well in that game your boy was going down field and he looked and saw ed reed barreling down on him and he just tripped over his own feet(hence: feet of clay) and lo and behold ed reed returns it 55 yards for a t.d, please don't make excuses for this coward of a wide rec. fish have 2 guys(bess and Camerello) they need another rec. to go over the middle and take the shots.. ted ginn and his clip board holding daddy are not the one..

No Way 5/11 at least 6/10 next season

Mando,

What do you think we can get in exchange for Satele?

tricky .D...you are wrong RE ted ginn and that's why tuna planing a WR for fins first pick.

Tricky, also there's a big differance from the N.F.l and ohio st regardless of what you may think..

we can get 50 bucks for satele manuel

Rex Ryan beat us twice last year not because of his great schemes but because of the great players that the Ravens had. Lets see what he can do with the bunch of losers that the Jests have. I predict that Rex will be just like his Daddy, a great D-coordinator and a terrible head coach, he is way too hyper to be an effective head coach.

Tricky, i was about to warn you . You just opened a can of worms , LOL . Just mention that collassol bust who can't even get on the field vernon gholston to the menace ( he's a jets fan ) Back to work gotta go !!

Phinsfan....fins were losers also before tuna came to the rescue and turned team of losers to a good team for now so don't start to talk like dolphins are the future pats.next season record looks like 7-9 at best for fins cause brady is back with new england and matt casell baby.

Sign Haynesworth and call it a day.
You can draft ILB and Wr in this draft.
Mcfadden from PIT could also be affordable.
Id rather have the most dominating DT than have Leonard and still have the aging Ferguson who only plays half the snaps !

every time i see you
i hear you
i feel you
i say hands of stone
i feet of clay
spare me of all repeat
5-9

i meant 5-11

Armando, good info but you guys have got to come up with something new on this "tuna helper" thing...it was funny first 10 times, now it is just annoying.

guys i was just searchng and saw that Ikechuku Ndukwe alowed 1.0 sacks in 15 starts to me this was pretty impressive

Speaking of cap space: Anyone willing to do the math on how much we'll have after cutting/loosing J. Allen, R. Hill, A Goodman, E. Wilford, C. Crowder? Who did I miss? Allen and Crowder were high draft picks, and Wilford was our big free agent pick up last year.

Nduke is a guard, he's supossed to open holes tu run more than avoid sacks (that's what tackles are for), he's just backup material

Smiley and Thomas (or someone new) will be the starters

tuna helper is funny as ted ginn hands of stone is.

Vernon carey allowed 4.5 sacks in 16 starts he ranked 11th in the league for right tackles

I'm with the majority here. I think Brown should be first priority. That would be one hell of an offensive line we would have. I worry that we are all writing off Satele a little too early though. The guy was great in his rookie season and while he regressed last year I wouldn't put it past him to bounce back. I would keep him for depth purposes rather than give him away. I like Scott a lot but I do think this draft is deep in linebackers. I'm also not opposed to us grabbing a WR with our first our second pick in the draft. I think it's a need and there is god talent available.

I WONDER IF MONKEY'S A PATRIOTS FAN THAT'S BLOGGING ON A DOLPHINS BLOG? HMMM... ANYWAYS, WHATS THIS HAYNESWORTH TALK? WHY DOES EVERYONE FORGET THAT SOLIAI IS A VERY VERY GOOD DT WHENEVER HE STEPS ON THE FIELD. (LAST SEASON OF COURSE)HE'S BEEN WREAKING HAVOC SINCE THE PRE-SEASON AND WHEN HE WAKES UPFOR THE TEAM MEETINGS AND DOESN'T GET PUNISHED FOR IT HE PLAYS A PHENOMINAL GAME. WE SHOULDN'T DRAFT A DT EARLY OR SIGN HAYNESWORTH. VONTAE DAVIS SEEMS TO BE DOING GOOD IN THE COMBINE AND HE IS A PARCELLS SIZED DEFENDER. MAYBE WE MIGHT DRAFT A CORNER.....

ok i just checked on some of the best receivers from this past year and here are the numbers there first 2 years and here's what i found.. for pitt: santonio holmes year 1 49 rec for 824yds and 2 tds
yr 2 52 for 942 and 8 td hines ward yr 1 15 245 0td yr 2 61 638 yd 8 tds
for ariz l fitzgerald yr 1 58 rec 780yd 8 td yr 2 103 1409 yds 10 td a.boldin yr 1 101 rec 1377 yd 8 td year 2 56 rec 723 yds 1 td
for new eng. randy moss 69 rec 1313 yds 17 td,year 2 80 rec 1413 yds 11 tds wes welker the las 2 years 223 rec,2360 yds and 11 tds,.all these players have one thing in common.. NO FEAR..can you tell me mr. ginn has no fear??? no?? i didnt think so..

Kimarley . crowder , hill and goodman are free agents . Their contracts have expired ,so their money doesn't count against our cap. The cap number are for players under contract.

I'm hoping the Dolphins nab at least one of them, all 3 are pretty great upgrades.

Concerning Miami against Ryan, I would say that he'll see a different Miami team next season. It's too early to say they'll be swept by the Jets (plus it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to even say it), but the Dolphins will have a different look and new (upgraded) players. Plus, Ryan doesn't have Ray Lewis. Or the number 2 defense in the league.

every time i come to read this blog i learn new info from most people here .mando shoud be proud of his work here to attract nice and real and funny fans .

Friends,

You undoubtedly have noticed my absence from these boards the past month or so. My longtime compadre, Armando, apparently has seen fit to ban me from his boards.

I want to make it perfectly clear that I bear no grudge against Mr. Salguero. We've been friends for too long to let a simple misunderstanding forever sever one of my most important relationships.

But in the event Armando resets the ban, I should like to conclude with one last set of lists:

I think getting Jason Brown should be our top priority this off-season regarding free agents. Think about it, he is big, talented, and durable starter. And he wouldn't even be the oldest on our ridiculously young and talented O-Line.

I would say go for a WR too but there are none in the FA class that really stand out to me as a true #1 receiver. Besides, there is plenty of talent in the draft this year at WR. so we could address that position with any of our picks in the first day.

As for LB, my dream scenario is that when Crowder tests the market he doesnt get many good offers and ends up back in MIA with a young, strong, playmaking ILB that we picked up in the draft, to compliment his tackling machine playing style. Imagine having J-Peezy, Crowder, Laurinitus or Cushing, and Cam Wake. That has the potential to be a truly great Linebacker Corps.

Our DB's are a mess. I highly doubt we will re-sign all of our free agents so we have to look to upgrade somehow. Ya, they played well toward the end of the season, but they were just hot at the time. They arent the group of players that will do it on a consistent basis such as the Raiders DB's.(who have been top 5 for the past 3 years). So i dont know what Parcells and Co. plan on doing on that front. But in my opinion that is the Dolphins biggest weakness by far.

I really should be getting paid for this lol.

menace, In today's world things changing fast more than any one can keep track but for me i can survive i wonder about others if they can do as good as me i am glad i am not a pit bull pit or one of these empty houses sitting around .in the end we all hope to gather in a nice picnic to know each and love each other.BTW are you a jet fan?

Nathaniel , amen on gingrich over obama in 2012. obama is in over his head and has been a f'n disaster so far. Also i like your 14 win season for miami in 2009.

NATHANIEL......i can see why you were banned from the blog ,long lis of crap and you think a lot of your self kid.this level of writing is to impress 7 GRADER .you should add 50 years ago to the line of Sophia.loren

keep dreamin billy bob ,
6/10

I looked up Bart Scotts stats for the reg season and they're not that impressive. 104 tackels 50 solo and 54 assisted and 1.5 sacks. Why are you people drooling over him?

That would be great. I applaud it. Wanny, Speilman, Muelller of Dolphins clubs of the past would do the same thing- go out and immediately sign a player from the team that beat you. That will most assuredly translate into success. That is a sure sign of intelligence. Be sure and spend lots of money too. Oh, one last thing - if they cost 1st or 2nd round picks, no problem - they must be good if we are willing to sacrifice those assets, right?

Out of the 3,i'd rather Miami go after Scott.Think about it,if the Dolphins miss out on Brown,we've still got a backup plan with Satele who's ok whilst picking a Center in the draft, but it definately looks like Crowder will be gone so that leaves Ayodele and someone else most of us have never heard of at Middle Linebacker. And as for Leonard,he's really nothing special and the depth at Safety in this years draft is quite strong.
