Miami Dolphins eying Ravens in free agency

And you thought the Dolphins were done with the Ravens after the playoffs last season?

In fact the Dolphins are monitoring the Ravens this week as two and perhaps three possible free agents from that team are Miami targets, in varying degrees, when free agency begins Feb. 27.

The Dolphins like linebacker Bart Scott, center Jason Brown and strong safety Jim Leonhard, according to an NFL source. But the source says it is unlikely the Dolphins will get more than one of those players -- at most -- because of other circumstances, not related to Miami, that are currently at play.

The source said no team, including the Dolphins, are likely to land both Brown and Scott because one of them is likely to return to Baltimore as a newly minted re-signed player before the end of this week. It should be noted that agent Harold Lewis represents both Brown and Scott and he recently told the Baltimore Sun he was negotiating with the Ravens on deals for both.

"My gut feeling is one of the two is going to hit free agency and the other one will probably sign," Lewis told the Sun. "That's just my gut."

Make no mistake here, the Dolphins hold both in high regard.

Scott is the explosive, running back-hungry inside linebacker the team wants. He's big at 6-2 and 240. He's quick. He's a great run-blitzer and is often effective when blitzing on passing downs. He also has excellent instincts.

If there is a downside on Scott it is that he will command a high price and there will be plenty of competition for his services, including within the AFC East. He is also 28 years old, which is slightly older than what is optimal in Miami's eyes.

Brown, 26 in May, is more attractive from an age standpoint. He has size at 6-3 and 320. He has a reputation for being tenacious. He is durable, having started every game the past two seasons -- he was the only Baltimore lineman to start every game in 2007. And he has started as both a left guard and a center during his career.

Leonhard is the least likely of the three the Dolphins would land because, frankly, he's probably headed to the New York Jets anyway.

Speaking of the Jets, the hiring of Rex Ryan as head coach is not exactly a good thing for the Dolphins. It says a lot that Ryan is a Bill Parcells protege' and has the Big Tuna's respect. In fact, Ryan was among the coaches interviewed when Big Tuna was lining up his Tuna Helpers in 2008.

So how does Ryan's presence in New York affect the Dolphins?

Immediately, Ryan will be adding talent he's familiar with and that means Ravens players. The scuttlebutt in league circles is that Leonhard, who started for the Ravens and was the object of some man love from some of the posters on here, is on New York's free agent radar.

Not coincidently, the Jets are also interested in Scott, which might cause another problem for Miami.

Leonhard, you'll recall, had an interception in the playoff game against Miami. And yes, the Ravens, with Ryan as their defensive coordinator, beat the Dolphins twice last season. Doesn't mean Ryan is more likely to beat the Dolphins while with the Jets. But he obviously understood Miami's offensive weaknesses.

I know one thing for sure..you wont see me hanging out in no Jets blog.......
Ask Marvin Lewis how coming off a great Raven D transitioned in Bengal land....
Ryan is going to a looser organization........not since Namath you loosers !
Farve just threw another pick 6 !Ahhh what to do with all those jet Farve jerseys !HAHAHAH WHATTA JOKE !
I say sign Haynesworth because of the availability of other DT'S is non-existent. Many Centers and WR'S are available in this draft , not to mention ILB'S. Sure Brown would be great addition but his position is much easier to fill.

I've never banned Nathanial Dodsworth, that I can remember. I am kind of creeped out by this anti christ person so, being a Christian also, I prayed and suddenly he disappeared. Now anti chrissy has taken his place. It's good to have faith!

nathaniel, what's your favorite curve of sophia loren you in love with and in details please

pray again armando

Really, can the Jets spend a lot in FA this year after the spending spree last year? What is the Jets cap situation?

Heather - a tough question, but a fair one.

I'm not going to lie to you. I think about Sophia's curves even in my sleep. She has no right angles. Even her shoulders are curvy. Can I point to just one curve? That's like venerating Dan Marino to the exclusion of Bob Griese. I simply can not and will not do it.

But getting back to the Book of Job - it is a misnomer to use the term "the patience of Job" since Job was the epitome of impatience. I must say that Job's 3 useless friends were only superseded in history by Ralph, Potsie and Souljahbeats.

Ron , check previous posts for answers to your question Click back on the bottom of the page . The jets have a ton of money to spend ( more than Miami}

Please help me! My worthless piece of crap son is missing. I have looked at all of the blogs that he spends 24-7 on and I can't find him. He promised he would clean my re-usable adult diaper before dinner and it's almost time to eat. Have you seen him today?

nj phin fan your right WAKE.
Here is some thing we as dolphins fans should think about.Mando tell me what you think.
What is that we really what mortgage every thing now to win maybe one superbowl. Then have to start all over when we can't pay them any more.
Or do we keep drafting smart big players like we did last year and contend in a lot on superbowls.
The one thing we always do is want every player out there but don't think of the cap hit and how it will affect in the future.
I don't know just something to think about.
we have about 20-21 million in cap space to use on F/A and the DRAFT.

Alex , the latter and i'm glad the trifecta also thinks so.

No disrespect to Mr. Leohnard but Mr. Scott is a perrennial All-Pro. He would be great help to our defense. I just hope we could get him.

Does anyone think we would be able to land Boldin from Arizona. I think he would be HUGE help.

What are the chances of landing WR Boldin from AZ. He is a tremendous player and help our offence.

Hey Mando, I wrote this same blog before you did! I kicked your butt! Then again, we both kicked Omar Kooky and Harvey Fialwhater's butts. We rock. Although I rock more.

Jeff 21, havent you heard these other bloggers say getting another w.r. is useless because of noodle arm chad p. not only that but mia. got ted (hall of fame) ginn and his clip board holding daddy...dolts..

When Is the draft? april what?

Billy Bob, yes the same guy...

Billy Bob, yes the same guy...

JEFF21 , is your nickname joey 2 times because you say everything twice ( "i gotta go get the papers , the papers " } also forget scott( going to jets ) and boldin ( staying in ari }

Nj Phin fan, nice take on good fellows, just dont tell tommy he's funny though.

Nj Phin fan, nice take on good fellows, just dont tell tommy he's funny though.

oooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tuna Helpers! Nice one Salguero.

We need to draft CB A. Smith from Wake, kid is a ball hawk.

I have given this much thought and I truly hope the Fins sign Brown, & also Scott & then maybe the safety. Such a move would make me very happy.

Brown would be a great pick up. A big center off of a dominating team.
As it has been said, we can pick up a linebacker in the draft. Center is a much tougher player to find for a rookie even if there is a big selection this year. Imagine the breakup of the Ravens.

I think if we get either of these guys itbwoupd be great! If we get brown, their are plenty of LBs in the draft, like Cushing, laurentis, maulagua, and larry English. If we get scott, I would almost grauntee we draft matt unger in the second round of the draft. GO FINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Æęžłü!!!!!!!

nj phin fan and Armando -
You both are saying the Jets have loads of cap space (more than the Dolphins).
I just read the NJ Daily News and Rich Cimini does indeed outline all of the moves the Jets have made to create $32.4 mil of cap space. He also says the jets started out $15 mil OVER the cap so they're actually at about $18 mil under now.
With the Vernon Carey signing, aren't the Dolphins in the same neighborhood?

The lowly jets do not pose any problems for the Dolphins. That team has always sucked and the "fat guy in a little coat" will soon be the next biggest loser in NJ.

The Fins were 1 play away from SWEEPING the jets last year...more to come.
The jests are the joke of the NFL.

"WHY DOES EVERYONE FORGET THAT SOLIAI IS A VERY VERY GOOD DT WHENEVER HE STEPS ON THE FIELD. (LAST SEASON OF COURSE)HE'S BEEN WREAKING HAVOC" dude...are you serious or just his agent?
That guy is a bum.

The Cuban Menace is a joke. Guess what? No Ted Ginn and the Dolphins would not have won the division. Now put that in your little stat book. Idiot! Go Fins and get Ginn some help!

Although Leonhard is a decent player he is not great or maybe even good. All of the plays he made against Miami was because Ed Reed can cover half of the field so Leonhard only has a limited space to cover. If free agency has taught us anything it has taught us that other than lineman overpaid free agent "skill" position players have difficulty transferring their success to other teams because of the systems they played in or other players contributing to their success. There are exceptions, but rare. If Miami could sign 1 player Brown would be the best. How would you feel about Miami's running game with him as our anchor? Wow!!

Oh, and I thought this was a football blog.

>handsome 43 year old guy

Handsome?

TRICKY: Ted Ginn Jr. compares very closely to Peter Warrick from FSU. Do you remember he was the most explosive kick-returing WR in College before going to Cincinnati? His best year was when he caught 60 balls as their 3rd WR (getting open b/c of Chad Johnson & TJ)!

Peter Warrick was a tiny fast guy just like Ginn is! Now, you think he's going to be elite b/c of 2 good catches he had last season? C'mon now, he'd ONLY be valuable if he was picked in the 4th round (& made that kind of $$).

Tedd Ginn and Peter Warrick are nothing alike. Ginn draws double teams so that Bess can get open. Wait until we get another bad ass. Keep in mind, the Dolphins passing offense was in the top 10 all last year. BTW, it's nobody's business how much money another man makes. Have you asked your boss for less money?

Dolphins, hopefully will get Brown at center and then find a smash mouth guard, probably in the later rounds. We will use our first pick on D-fence, probably at ILB to replace Crowder.
Then pick up a value pick in the rounds 3-5 for a reciever, say Ramses Barden, Brian Robiske or Patrick Turner.
Dolphins like a few players from U-Conn: one that I also like is Cody Brown and can play OLB in the 3-4 and can bring it.

As far as Ted Ginn there is nothing we can do now. He was part of another regime and was selected in the first round, and you know if Parcelles was here back then, they would not have taken him or anyother reciever so early.
But we not just going to get rid of him he has talent and speed, so if we get a big possesion reciever that we open things up for everyone.

Mando and fellow readers,

The Jets may have TONS of cap space but lets not forget what they DONT have, and thats a QB.

They got Calvin Pace last year, they got Alan Faneca as well. They ALMOST got the division, but heart will always beat money.

So let the Jets take who they want from FA, Our trifecta will play the market SMART and building us into perennial contenders. A'la Cowboys (without the Choking hopefully)

I honestly think our main concerns should be OL and WR. We should make a big splash towards a WR. I dont care who, but someone who can make plays. I like TJ alot. He might not be as fast as most receivers but he demands respect from defenses. Maybe, then MAYBE, Ginn will FINALLY show up.

Dont give up on GINN guys, give him this coming season. He's progressed and regressed in oth of his seasons, but I think this year will finally show his worth.

Go Dolphins! Dolfans are the best!

And to the Patriots fool of a fan, Yea Tom Brady is back!! woo hoo!! and Matt Cassell!! WOOOO

Over $20 mil in Qb's...one coming off a major injury and another Derek Anderson, I mean, one hit wonder.

ANYONE can look good with Randy Moss as QB. Culpepper did. Pep was nothing without Moss. Brady is Brady, I have nothing but respect for him, but Cassell, I think he's OK. He hasnt done enough to deserve the $14 mil.

Rememebr Chad Pennington had Moss in College. No one said anything about his arm strngth then right?

And keep in mind that Brady, like any other QB, is ONE hit away from being IR'ed

ITS PROBALY TOO LATE FOR THIS BLOG BUT I AGREE I THINK CUBAN MENACE IS ED THE FIRE MAN. YOU CAN NOT CALL YOUR SELF A TRUE FAN IF YOU BAND WAGON JUMP JUST BECEAUSE YOUR TEAM IS NOT DOING WELL. ROB YOUR ARE THE MAN FOR REALIZING MR. GINN TRUE POTENTIAL. MR MENACE DID NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT THE STRAIGHT CATCHS IN A ROW. HE JUST WANTS TO PICK AND CHOOSE THE BAD PLAYS BUT NO CREDIT FOR THE GOOD ONES. AND HE KEEPS PARAPHRASING OLD FAMOUS PEOPLE. GET YOU FACTS. I WILL GIVE CUBAN MENACE ONE THING HE DID GET RIGHT AND I GUESS ALL OF USE DOLPHIN FANS AGREE DAVE WANY SUCKED THE BIG ONE. KEEP IT CUBAN WE ALL HAVE OUR OPINIONS BUT THE GINN BEING A SUPER STAR IS A FACT.

jason brown is the most important one we should reallyyyy try to sign. we need a bigger center..hes proven and hes only 25. bart scott is good but i question if he looks better than he truely is because of all the talent around him in baltimore. i say we draft a LB...try to grap carpenter from dallas...cheaper than scott and can challenge for a starting spot in the middle. draft a LB in the 1st or 2nd round to groom have as depth.

Maybe the Phins will take a peek @ lb David Harris Who is the same size as crowder

Did I forget to mention Harris is only 25

Manuel we might be able to pry a pineapple& a coconut away from someone in trade for satele

We need to sigh brown... Dolphins line with Long,Carey,Brown, move Satele to guard, an Draft a Big Guard in the 2nd rd, Use the first pick to draft LB/DL, use are other 2nd Rounder an a S/CB an Pat White as a QB in the 3rd, if we get white trade Beck, we can get aa nice WR in FA or later in the draft

An as far as Defense we need to resign Bell an Goodman..Try to Sign Saftey Gabril Wilson perfect fit for 3-4, try to sign one of the many CBS- maybe Phillip Buchanon(remember he played for the UM), or Jabari Greer, an maybe bring in Keiwan Ratliff or Corey Ivy to add to depth....LB- Draft Cushing Sign Angelo Crowell If he is healthy an can make a return an also sign Zach thomas back for a 1year deal to help the development of cushing...DL we are decent on the ends need to draft a young DT in the draft, ferguson is good an we have a vonnie to help him but we need a young guy to take over, an maybe trade roth for a draft pick or WR/CB

Just think
DE
Merling-Langford- an have Roth as a backup if he is not Traded

DT
Ferguson- an u also got Holliday an Soliai

OLB
Porter-Wake- an u got Anderson or roth could also give u some time here

ILBs
Cushing with Zach sharing time with Crowell on the other side sharing time with Ayodele-

CB
Buchanon or Greer- on one side with Goodman on the other with Ivy or ratliff as the Nickle

Safties
Wilson-Bell an Draft someone in the 2nd round if theres one worth taking or wait till 4th-5th

Offense We Need to address the Line an WR....take a Chance on Jerry porter or maybe Jabar gaffney....Sign Brown or Jake Grove would also be a nice fit Draft A Guard in the 2nd Rd an Draft Pat white in the 3rd we would have a decent Offense

QB
Pennington- with Henne backing him up, Pat White (to Run Wildcat)

RBs
Ronnie Brown-Ricky Williams- an Cobbs all Sharing time they will all stay Fresh

FB
Use a late Round pick

TE
Fasano- David Martin

WR
Ginn-Cararillo-Bess-London- with Porter or gaffney would be a nice group

OT
Jake Long-add Depth
Vernon Carey-add Depth

OG
Satele- Move him from Center to Guard
Draft a Big Guard in the 2nd round

C
Sign brown Or grove

Just get Laveranues Coles.... a WR that we truly need right away.
He is 31yrs old but rarely injured, 800 to 1200 yards every season... good hands plus would re-unite him with Chad P. that would be great...for all.

nkldsfjkl

I think that we should go after Brown heavily. Then we could move Satele to guard where he is better suited. We should also sign Laverneus Coles to fill or WR spot since the Jets just released him and Chad already has a rapore with him. We should get a LB or a DT with our first round pick. Then look to get a quality CB in free agency. We should also make the trade with Dallas to get Bobby Carpenter and take a look at signing Chris Canty to help our defense. I just don't think that Bart Scott is worth what we would have to pay him. If we don't sign Coles, I would not be opposed to making a possible trade for Boldin. With these moves, we would be a serious contender again. And as far as Ginn goes, I think that he is finally starting to find his stride. He has gotten better every year. This could be his breakout year. These moves would be the smartest and the cheapest for us to still be contenders instead of pretenders! Since that is what the league thinks that we are right now. They think that last year was a fluke. If we can get these players, we can show them that it wasn't!
