Dolphins still looking at free agent CBs [Update]

Contrary to a report the Dolphins were finished with free agency, the team announced Wednesday a visit by free agent cornerback Demarcus Faggins.

Although Faggins was not signed as of 6 p.m. (which was the last time I checked), you should know the Dolphins have had intentions of signing every player they've brought to town so far in free agency. So do not be surprised if Miami extends a contract offer.

The Dolphins brought Joe Berger, Jake Grove and Eric Green in for free agent visits prior to Faggins and signed all three.

Although Faggins has started 36 games in his career, he is not considered a starting caliber cornerback but rather a role player, a nickel or dime corner and specifically a slot cornerback.

This is what ESPN's Scouts Inc. says about the 29-year-old Faggins: "He has been an on again, off again, starter for the Texans in the previous six years. He is a good athlete with quick feet and fluid, supple hips that he can flip to open and run with receivers, as they get even with him. He is quick in transition and drives on the ball with a decent burst of acceleration. He can be beat by speedy receivers on fly patterns and needs to bail out early when he thinks receivers are going to try and just run by him. He is a smart corner who shows good route recognition when in off coverage and does a good job of reading the quarterback's eyes to get a jump on the ball from zone. He can struggle to make a play on the ball, when lined up on bigger receivers and seems to find his success when lined up on the inside slot receivers. While he can line up and start at corner, he is best suited as a nickel back who covers the inside routes."

Faggins is an original Texan who wanted to return to Houston but the team has decided to go another direction so he needs a new gig.

[Update: Miami's continued interest in corners, who have been no better than average, is troubling in that Jason Allen's fall from grace is almost complete. If the Dolphins had any confidence in their resident 6-1, 200-pound player, Allen would be a favorite to win the starting job vacated by Andre' Goodman's departure in free agency.

The Dolphins wouldn't need to mess with players such as Faggins.

The idea would be to allow Allen, who is 25 and entering his fourth NFL season, to finally fulfill the promise of his size and draft status. But the signing of Eric Green, the flirtation with Faggins and the probable selection of a rookie CB in the coming draft leads to the conclusion the club has zero confidence in what Allen offers.

In fact, the only time the coaches under Bill Parcells seemed to have any confidence in Allen is when they didn't really know him. Remember he was handed the starting free safety job at the start of training camp last year. Of course, this is when coaches were still learning what players could do.

Once practices and scrimmages and preseason games began, coaches saw they made a mistake and Allen got shelved. Coaches had seen what they needed to see. Then Allen was moved to cornerback. And forced into the lineup as the starting nickel or dime package corner, Allen lasted only one game before getting shelved again. He finished the season primarily as a special teams grunt. This guy was the 16th overall selection of the 2006 draft!

Now, with a glaring need at cornerback, the Dolphins are seeking answers among mediocre free agent vets. Allen may still get an opportunity to compete in training camp -- but that feels like it will be more like a battle for a roster spot than an attempt to become a starter.]

Do the Dolphins have any interest in Samari Rolle?

This what you mean by contrary to reports Mando?

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up free agency and turned their full attention to April's draft.

Armando if we sign Faggins I think this move does 2 things. 1st it puts us past the Pats and I believe it cements our status as Super Bowl favorites, and 2nd it makes mini camp that much more exciting. Just imagine Tuna pacing up and down the field watching the battles take place during the OTA's. Joe Berger vs. Andy Alleman! Eric Green vs. Demarcus Faggins vs. Scorpio Babers! I cannot wait!

With the Dolphins paying so much attention to the CB position and with the obvious need for a good corner opposite Will Allen, you have to think that the Dolphins will definetely take a corner at 25 (either Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, or Darius Butler). It is just such a gaping hole at such an important position.

Our draft changes to >LB, NT, WR then CB if we sign Faggy. Im sure the Three Amigo's will pick up a good few special teamers with the rest of the picks. I can also see them finding a gem like Bess with the Free agent rookies. Will a RB be taken to replace Hilliard on the practice squad ? what is the word Mando.

...I know this isn't very nice, but am I really the only one who kinda doesn't want a "Gay" or a "Fagg" or a "Faggins" on our football team, regardless of how good he is? I know, I know. I honestly have no issues other than the name. It's like having a Nascar driver with the name, "Reely Slowe". Ya know what I mean? Like, I have to admit, (in the safety of anonymity of course) that I would prefer a completely unknown, undrafted guy named "Maxx Powers" than some guy from the Texans named "Bilbo Faggins." I mean, come on, you can not tell me I'm the only one here, people. Come on!

Demarcus Faggins and De'Cody Fagg would be a hit on South Beach.

come on guys were not going to the super bowl we'll be lucky to be 9-7 next yeat with the schedule we have. We have big holes on the the defensive side of the ball. (LB,CB,DL). Not to mention the offensive side with NO decent WR's. 9-7 If we play well, sorry I'm a huge fan but have a realistic view of things.

I Hear the japanese are offering 410 dollars a pound for tuna.... thats over 16,ooo.oo for percells....lets trade him to the japs!!

My Mistake Guys Its 160,000.00 Dollars

Really, am I the only Dolfan that believes that WR is one of the least worrisome possitions we have? We've got Ted Ginn, underutilized in our current offence due to lack of deep balls thrown his way. He made some Terrific catches deep last year. ( the one against buffalo to start the game comes to mind ) We've got a guy that's going to catch everything that comes his way (camarillo), and also have the makings of a very good slot receiver in Bess. Only thing that our corps lacks is someone that is big... oh wait, we've got Brandon London learning the ropes. All of our current guys have the talent to be very good at the role that they fit most in, all they need is experience. When Greg Camarillo is your most experienced guy, you have to expect there to be some growing pains.

All that being said, I'd bet a dollar to a dime that we draft linebacker, probably of the inside variety. One of Mathews, Cushing, malawhatsit or Animals son should be available. There isn't a DT that would be worth a first round pick for us, WR is so incredibly deep we are bound to have a very nice choice in round 2 if we need to go there, and we have solidified both defensive backfield positions during the off season. DE is spoken for by our two rookies from last year, but will probably add one or two after round 3 or so for depth and special teams.

As an outside posibility, Tuna Helpers may try to recreate most of Bills teams by getting a top flight tight end, aka Whiten, Coates and Bavaro, but I don't see pettigrew slipping, and no other tight end has the grade to warrant it. Also..... well, we could go O-Line. It is one of the deeper positions, so a top flight guard or right tackle could fall to us, and need or no, if a lineman is tops on our board, I think the team jumps. What I personally would like to see is us draft a tackle, throw him on the right side and move vern inside to guard. I'm not particularly sold on Thomas yet (he's real young, and i remember Wade Smith being the second coming of Richmond Webb during his first preseason), and Carey has the skillset to be one of the best guards in the league, as opposed to a good tackle.

Oh yeah, if whoever drafts Laurinitis doesn't start playing the road warriors theme music, i'll be pretty pissed

Man from the guy who was hopefully sarcastic about being ahead of the Pats if we sign faggins, to the one who says we are fine at WR. I wish you people would watch some football sometime.

when will people wake up and understand we need a shut-down caliber CB to deal with the WR talent the AFC east has now and the rest of our more difficult schedule. Free Agency will not give us that so i see them drafting another DB. We are in dire need of a True #1 receiver as Ginn has proven year after year he has not lived up to where he was drafted. I hope he comes around, but im not holding my breath. bess and camarones are great possession receivers yet dont push ginn enough for him to evolve into a #1. This will be the second season with chad so i expect improvement on offense all around, but we still need a WR.

LB and NG would help with depth so we'll see what happens there ,but personally id love to see JT ( i wish zach too) finish his years here despite the holy trinity wanting to stay young.

PS. anyone else notice the faggins description say he had supple hips? wtf is up with that?

i agree with u Dalton on basically everything u just said, so with that said read what Dalton wrote i couldn't have said it better myself.

Kevin Hates Most of you-

I got your sarcasim. Good stuff. I thought it was pretty obvious you were joking. Now I see why you hate most of us.

I also basically agree with Dalton most of the way.

When I look at this years draft and projections I try to be Parcells meaning everything is based on his system(and being a dolfan growing up on the 70's dolphins, run, stop the run, field position) I think simular to Parcells. I think ppl wanting a WR at #1 are talking about what they want and not what they think Bill will do.

When thinking about what the phins will do on draft day there are things I have to take into consideration: 1st FO said this is a 3 yr project. 2nd Parcells way of building:
1) run the ball
2) field position
3) Don't make mistakes at the QB spot
4) stop the run
5) make the play calling predictable
6) Rush the passer and force them to make mistakes

3rd) Take Parcells history into account: He is always looking for HIS next L.T.
4th) Consider what was added last year in draft. LT, QB, Guard, WR, 2 DLmen
5th) this off-season center and OL depth
6th) Look at strength of draft according to your picks late 1st and 2 seconds I see this as a defensive opportunity
7th) Roster depth and positions targeted: 53 players minus kickers leaves 51 players(forget practice squad(they can be raided like Balt. and the RB on squad last yr) and who you make inactive) So that would leave what 26 Offense and 25 defense?

3 TEs: we have 3 young ones
3 QBs: we have
5 WRs: we have 4 young ones we like and Wilford who I am not sure the team would cut
10 OL: 5 starters Satele, Berger, Allmen, Ndukwe, Murphy and that leaves no OT reserve someone young and liked will have to go even at keeping 10 I cannot see the team only keeping 9 here
5 Backs: We have Brown, Williams, Cobb, and Polite(keeping 4 leaves us thin) and I team needs to look for a replacement for Williams carries and possably for Brown if he wants more then FO wishes to pay for a RB.
thats 26 O players leaving 25 for D(which I would think all being equal Bill would prefer 26 on D and 25 on O but oh well
Defense:
NT: Ferg's replacement has to be looked for
DE: Inspite of Langford and Merling you need atleast 3 DE starters meaning Rotators for fatigue and Injury a DE addition will be considered
ILB no depth and I suspect they are looking for Ayodele to be replaced and be the depth
OLB: here we are definately looking for a pass rusher AND Porter's eventual replacement. Wake might be the pass rusher that alterantes with Roth(passing downs) maybe not, it could very well be the FO is looking for 2 OLBs the second either alternating with Roth or taking his position moving Roth into the DE rotation
CB: We are looking for 2 starters, one for this yr and one to replace W. Allen
Saftey: Looking for depth and insurance case Bell gets hurt

This leaves me to believe our 3 yr "needs" are:
ILB, OLB(maybe 2), DE, NT, 2 CBs, Saftey, OT, RB(maybe 2), WR(playmaker)

I believe the FO likes the 4 young WRs but don't yet have a handle on their ceiling this leads me to believe barring something strange that WR/playmaker gets put on hold until next yr. RB if a Green or Mccoy or Brown drops to say 56 I wouldn't be surprised we snatch him.

then you look at the talent that will be in the 2010 draft(3rd yr of rebuild/plan) helping you decide what to target in this yrs draft.

All that said and done I believe the FO uses 7 of the 9 picks on D. ILB, OLB, DE, NT, 2 cbs and either a 2nd OLB or Saftey. That leaves 2 picks for offense and atleast 1 of the 2 will be OT maybe even 2 low round OTs that leaves one more pick left for either WR or RB and that will depend on what player has dropped to a level that the FO must have the guy.

I cannot see the FO drafting a WR unless it is a middle round dropper. Parcells and Sparano have said build from the inside out, QB, OL, RB, and the front 7 then the playmakers at WR and CB

I like supple hips.... on a woman. I think the ESPN scout is overdue for a little action. Maybe he should scout Pacman (on & off the field). Or maybe Armando has a sister or in-law that is to his liking.

I like Blaze's analysis and agree... Parcells always builds from the inside out and loves to pound the ball... Good stuff Blaze, maybe the Herald should hire you for this stuff. Seems like Mando is a fake Dolphin Fan... Where are you originally from anyway?? Not South Florida.. Blaze for new Dolphin Analyst!! LOL!! Go Phins!!!

Don't know about you guys but I really, really would like to see Jay Cutler in aqua and orange throwing heat seeking missiles for us on Sundays!! Our 1st rounder, Pennington and an expendable player or 2 for the gunslinger from Vanderbilt. I wanted him coming out of college but Saban screwed that up by not having the foresight allowing Denver to leapfrog us and with his Culppeper resurrection project. Uuuug!!

Clay Mathews is the steal of the draft, but I would rate Larry English right along side him, a bit below. Clay has the speed, the goods and what it takes to be a LB for year's to come. He reminds me of Green Bay's Kapman, but as a LB, and Kapman, all he has done the past few years is lead the league in sacks(or been 2nd). So if we trade up with Detroit to get him, before damn grubby NE gets him-even if they get J. Peppers, I'll be happy. The only other player with 1st round potential would be to get Hakeem Nicks because if he makes it past the Jets and goes to #25, Miami will surely get him, they have spent enough time with him and really like him, and he isn't going to make it to the 2nd round. They are interviewing outside LB Conner Barwin too, however, they will probably most likely trade out of 25 if they feel he is better than Mathews, which I believe is definitely not going to be the case. The other intriguing possibility is if Malcom Jenkins slips to Miami! A lot of scouts don't like his 40 speed, but the guy is strong and can jam receivers- ala Champ Baily, but without the speed, let's see if he makes it down to Miami. No way do they take Pettigrew if Mathews is still on the board. Cushing is an option, but he sucks as far as speed and chasing down QBs and RB's, he would play inside behind Crowder, and so long as Crowder's knee's hold up-which is a big if, he wouldn't get on the field unless they groomed him to back up Odeyele. Kenny Britt in the 2nd to me is a better option, along with Sean Smith or Butler. No way do I take Davis with question marks about his intelligence and character. Parcells doesn't buy into those freelancers that dont have a love for the game. I'm sold Mathews will be a star because of his athleticism and his father's history and his ability to get to the QB. If Maluga is still there with Mathews, that could change Miami's feelings since Maluga is a beast, but I still think Mathews is better at the peice the phins are trying to fill.

trade up to secure matthews. he is getting better and his stock is rising! some others have peaked.

kevin.H.most of you,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,6-10 at best

enough of the big 10 prospects!!!!! they historically are not good in the nfl... every year there are 2 or 3 big bust that come out of there... its way too risky for a rebuilding team to draft a player in the 1st from the big 10... AJ Hawk is the only good LB i can think of out of that super overrated conference

i agree with fsudolphins13 AJ Hawk is the best LB out there .

DOLPHINS IN THIS YEAR's SUPERBOWL!!!YOU BETTER AX SOMEBODY.

dolphins this year at best ......................6-10

MATTHEWS SUCKS. FOOTBALL RUNNING IN HIS VAINS AND HAD TO BE A WALK ON. THAT TO ME QUESTIONS HIS DEDICATION. PLUS BESIDES URLACHER THERE's NO GOOD LINEBACKERS

AFC ESAT CRAP TALK IS BACK,CAN'T YOU AT LEAST WAIT UNTIL WE HAVE SOME THING TO EAT MR CHAMP CRAP.

....THAT ARE WHITE

I RATHER HAVE TWO CHADS THAN ONE BABY. GIVE CUTLER A BOTTLE.HE WAS GREAT IN THAT SYSTEM WHO CAN SAY HE WILL DO GOOD IN A DIFFERENT ONE. ONE CHAD TEACHING THE OTHER LEARNING MAKING THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN. WILDCARD I'LL GIVE THE EAST TO THE CHEATERS BUT THE DOLPHINS IN THE SUPERBOWL. KEEP THAT BABY IN DENVER HE WILL NEVER DO S=IT. I'LL TAKE THAT CRY BABY T.O OVER CUTLER. HE DOESN'T WANT TO WIN HE WANT TO FEEL WANTED. AND I DON'T THINK THE GODFATHER WANT ANY BI=CH A=SNESS ON THE TEAM. JUST LOOK AT PENNE. CAME IN DID HIS JOB BETTER THAN ANY BODY THOUGHT. TOOK THE BLAME WHEN HE MESSED UP AND TOOK THE BLAME WHEN IT WASN'T. I LOVE THE CORE OF THE NEW FINS AND I SEE SOOO MUCH MORE IN THIS YEARS DRAFT. TAKING CUTLER JUST TO HAVE TO STROKE HIS EGO DON'T SOUNDS LIKE THE THING THE GODFATHER WOULD DO.

Mando, are you able to give us draft pick visits as effectively as you give us free agents? I pick up information here and there but knowing who we are working out may give us some insight for the draft.

AFC EAST CHAMP,he sure sound like he's sleeping with the fishes .

I don't think the Dolphins coaches were really happy with the CB play of most of the guys on the roster from last year except Will Allen, so this isn't a surprise. Green and Faggins are both slight upgrades and after they add a CB in the draft their secondary should turn out ok.

PICTURE IF YOU CAN CHAD STANDING WITH HIS RIGHT ARM MAKING A MUSCLE WITH HIS LEFT LEG ON ON BRETT's CHEST SCREAMING KING KONG AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON ME.

NOT SLEEPING WINNING WITH THE FISH 11-5 AGAIN

EVERYBODY KEEPS TALKING ABOUT BILDING FROM THE INSIDE OUT TRUE HE DID THAT LAST YEAR

6-10 AT BEST--- YEAH IF YOU HAD TO PLAY THE FINS TWICE THIS YEAR. THE jets 0-16 THE pats ARE FALLING BACK TO EARTH. NOW THE FINS WERE THE TEAM TO BEAT IN THEN THE bills WERE THE TEAM TO BEAT NOW THE pats ARE WITH THE FINS MAKING A PUSH THE bills GETTIN T.O AND THE jets STILL GROUNDED.

AFC.....What are your thoughts about tuna, you think he will stay after 2009 and also you think if cutler comes to join the fins ,will this move help or hurt ? thanks

The best pass defense is a great pass rush. We dont have a great or even good pass rush. Parcell's and company will look to find the best addition(s) to create QB pressure whether that be a LB, DL or both. Even with the addition of Wake from the CFL our front seven is a long ways from being on par with teams like the Steelers and the Ravens. You only need average corners with a good pass rush. I wouldnt be surprise if we dont draft a WR or CB until the 3 or 4th pick in the draft.

"supple hips"?

Armando, we reported on our blog Wednesday that Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland would be at the Gators Pro Day.

The Palm Beach Post is reporting neither Sparano nor Parcells nor Ireland were at the Pro Day.

Were we wrong? Again?

Good Morning girls, the menace is on the web, whats the 1st guestion for the cuban?

FISH AND CHIPS AND THAT'S CHAMPIONCHIPS

WELL 6-10 TUNA LAST YEAR DREW THE BLUE PRINTS AND WITH THIS YEAR HE'LL LAY DOWN THE FOUNDATION I HOPE HE COMES BACK AND BUILD THE BEST TEAM HE CAN BUT IF NOT IRELAND AND SPARANO ARE VERY CAPABLE OF DOING THE SAME THING. LAST YEAR WAS IRELAND's DRAFT PICKS TUNA PRETTY MUCH JUST SAID GOOD JOB AND O.KED THE PICKS.

thank you AFC,you made me feel better but what if Ireland leave with him? wILL Sparano be able to do all three jobs and save the fins a lot of money?thanks

When was the last time king tuna went to the super bowl????

I think this just sets the Dolphins up to take the best available player with their first round selection. They have addressed depth at offensive line and the secondary and it seems as though they are content with the wide receivers. So they can go linebacker (to get some youth), wide receiver (just someone big to compliment Ginn and Bess), defensive line (Parcels loves having multiple big bodies and we need a nose guard for aging Ferguson) or best available. I like it. WR may be our biggest need, but the Tuna doesnt see it that way...with the deep linebacker class this season, I think they'll get a linebacker.

FIN FANS STOP LOOKIN AT WHAT OTHER TEAMS ARE DOING. WE ARE IN A GREAT SPOT ARMANDO SOUNDS SCARED I DON'T CARE WHAT THE REST OF THE LEAGUE IS DOING WE NEED TO REMEMBER WE'RE BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE WHILE STILL TRING TO WIN NOW.WE CAN DEBATE DRAFTS PICKS BUT SIMPLY WE NEED HELP AT CORNER,LINEBACKER. WIDEOUTS ARE NOT BAD JUST A STRONGER ARM IS NEEDED. NOSETACKLE DEPTH AT THE D-ENDS. BUT THIS IS ONLY YEAR 2. NOT WORRIED AT ALL. WE'RE SOLID AT QB AND I HOPE THEY DON'T GO AFTER CRY BABY CUTLER RB SOLID O-LINE SOLID D-LINE AS SAID BEFORE BACK UPS NEEDED LB LIKE WAKEHOPEFULLY HE CAN BE WHAT HE WAS IN THE CFL BUT IF HE IS HALF OF THAT HE WOULD BE A GOOD UPGRADE OVER ROTH CB HELP IS MUCH NEEDED AND NOT BECAUSE T.O OR MOSS BUT THAT'S THE WEAKEST SPOT ON THE TEAM. FINS IN THIS YEARS SUPERBOWL

Besides his bathroom where his toilet holds enough water to fill a Olympic size pool...

I know it's early in the a.m afc east champs, but should you already be drinking whiskey??

cuban.do you like the glasses Sparano wears?

All you people saying we should get cutler are crazy. You say he is a "proven" QB, but what has he proven???? That he can't get a team to the playoffs???? That he has a strong arm, but makes wrong decisions????? That he is a crybaby????

AFC CHAMP is very well informed guy.........even if writes worth than luggi

Ah monkey, I hear your being sued for 50 million dollars, what's going to be your defence??and also tony's glasses are OK..

WELL CUBAN CAN TELL YOUR NOT A REAL COP MAYBE YOU'RE A PAPER PUSHER AND DON'T GET OUT MUCH BUT LAST TIMEI HEARD IT TAKES ACOMPLETE TEAM TO WIN NOT ANY SINGLE PERSON. MARINO BEST QB TO PUT ON PADS DIDN'T HAVE COMPLETE TEAM.BARRY THE BEST RB EVER TO PLAY DIDN'T HAVE HELP THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TEAM GAME.EVERY SINGLE PERSON HAS TO DO THEIR JOB WAY ABOVE AVERAGE TO WIN.A SINGLE GAME LET ALONE GETTING TO AND WINNING THE SUPERBOWL

Mando, Faggins is just part of the "churning" of the roster... He is better than Scorpio Babers and Joey Thomas so Ireland is looking to upgrade... Sporano said you can never have enough cover guys or lineman... Jason Allen played well until the Patriots game when he broke his hand going up against Randy Moss... Allen's game is a physical bump and run guy... After he lost use of one of his hands, he became ineffective as a bump and run guy.... That's when he lost his spot... Then Nate Jones came in and played well as the third corner so the spot was his to lose... This year is definitely sink or swim for Jason Allen and I think he will float... I think Jason Allen won't be a Pro Bowler but I think he can be Will Allen... That's all this team needs...

PATRONE

And also too monkey, when you attacked that poor lady did she utter those famous words" GET YOUR DAMN DIRTY PAWS OFF ME , YOU DAMN DIRTY APE.." ?

Cuban,.My defense will be as follow, i did it while i was confused reading that AFC EAST CHAMPS CRAP and i am sure the court will understand ones they see the samples of his writings.

Nice tequila, have you tried 3 brothers, very smooth for tequila...
