Contrary to a report the Dolphins were finished with free agency, the team announced Wednesday a visit by free agent cornerback Demarcus Faggins.
Although Faggins was not signed as of 6 p.m. (which was the last time I checked), you should know the Dolphins have had intentions of signing every player they've brought to town so far in free agency. So do not be surprised if Miami extends a contract offer.
The Dolphins brought Joe Berger, Jake Grove and Eric Green in for free agent visits prior to Faggins and signed all three.
Although Faggins has started 36 games in his career, he is not considered a starting caliber cornerback but rather a role player, a nickel or dime corner and specifically a slot cornerback.
This is what ESPN's Scouts Inc. says about the 29-year-old Faggins: "He has been an on again, off again, starter for the Texans in the previous six years. He is a good athlete with quick feet and fluid, supple hips that he can flip to open and run with receivers, as they get even with him. He is quick in transition and drives on the ball with a decent burst of acceleration. He can be beat by speedy receivers on fly patterns and needs to bail out early when he thinks receivers are going to try and just run by him. He is a smart corner who shows good route recognition when in off coverage and does a good job of reading the quarterback's eyes to get a jump on the ball from zone. He can struggle to make a play on the ball, when lined up on bigger receivers and seems to find his success when lined up on the inside slot receivers. While he can line up and start at corner, he is best suited as a nickel back who covers the inside routes."
Faggins is an original Texan who wanted to return to Houston but the team has decided to go another direction so he needs a new gig.
[Update: Miami's continued interest in corners, who have been no better than average, is troubling in that Jason Allen's fall from grace is almost complete. If the Dolphins had any confidence in their resident 6-1, 200-pound player, Allen would be a favorite to win the starting job vacated by Andre' Goodman's departure in free agency.
The Dolphins wouldn't need to mess with players such as Faggins.
The idea would be to allow Allen, who is 25 and entering his fourth NFL season, to finally fulfill the promise of his size and draft status. But the signing of Eric Green, the flirtation with Faggins and the probable selection of a rookie CB in the coming draft leads to the conclusion the club has zero confidence in what Allen offers.
In fact, the only time the coaches under Bill Parcells seemed to have any confidence in Allen is when they didn't really know him. Remember he was handed the starting free safety job at the start of training camp last year. Of course, this is when coaches were still learning what players could do.
Once practices and scrimmages and preseason games began, coaches saw they made a mistake and Allen got shelved. Coaches had seen what they needed to see. Then Allen was moved to cornerback. And forced into the lineup as the starting nickel or dime package corner, Allen lasted only one game before getting shelved again. He finished the season primarily as a special teams grunt. This guy was the 16th overall selection of the 2006 draft!
Now, with a glaring need at cornerback, the Dolphins are seeking answers among mediocre free agent vets. Allen may still get an opportunity to compete in training camp -- but that feels like it will be more like a battle for a roster spot than an attempt to become a starter.]

I wish i was a paper pusher afc east champ.

Eric Green and Demarcus Faggins are being brought in to add depth as third and fourth DB's. The starters will be Will Allen and Either Jason Allen or a rookie drafted on day one. Jason will be given every chance to either start or bust. This will be his last chance with this regime.

Mob-- I'm afraid you're right. I would have thought that Allen would have had his last chance with this regime after that second New England game, but he's still on the roster!

Thank you Cuban. As you know, posting on blogs is all there is in my life so it is important to me.

I think they feel Allen will be the starter- not in a battle for a roster spot.
Then why haven't they got a savvy vet to play alongside Will Allen and draft a kid in the first 3 picks in the first 2 rounds. That would be call, but I think they feel Allen can play.
We shall see, eh

we need a live chat with armando,it's the best time to talk football period.isn't true menace.
Posted by: monkey | March 19, 2009 at 11:34 AM
Dolphins did not spend money on Goodman, because they felt his price vs production did not match. This is especially true considering Goodman is already 30yo and probably close to beginning downside of his career. It's not like a Champ Bailey quality corner was available in free agency.
In Eric Green and Faggins, Dolphins got solid players at cheap prices. Green and Allen also present some possible upside with athleticism.
Maybe Allen with full off-season and camp at one position can finally blossom. And except for getting burned by Randy Moss (who deosn't get burned by him) he actually played pretty well last year.
Drafting a couple of young talented corners will also let team develop some young and cheap talent.
And lest we not forget, the Parcells philosophy has always been that don't need premium cover players. A good pass rush will make good players look great.

after deep thought and research , i think may be if or sometimes in case if i think i could be a champ in my great good marino team.
Posted by: AFC EAST CHAMPS | March 19, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Pass rush--pass rush--pass rush-- our greatest need. Pressure on the Qback will make an ordinary defense look great, it leads to INT's, overthrown or underthrown balls, and Sacks. I hope the guy from Canada works out, pick up a great pass rushing LB in the draft, talk JT into getting in shape and playing for us to finish out his HOF career, and we have a SB bound team. I also would love Jay Cutler, great talent. Penne is great but on the downside. Henne is unknown.

Maybe we can talk about curt(i want to thank my lord and savior j.christ)warner signing for 12 million on monday and then having hip surgury on wed. i mean my grandfather had the same surgery and he was never the same.but then again he was 78...2 years younger then warner.
Posted by: cuban menace | March 19, 2009 at 11:44 AM
MANDO IMHO I THINK J.ALLEN HAS PLAYED VERY GOOD THE PAST TWO SEASONS. IN OUR 1-15 SEASON HE WAS A STAR AND LAST YEAR BEFORE HE GOT PULLED HE WAS THE STAR. CROCKER WAS OBVIOUSLY A PRACTICE VETERAN AND KNEW WHAT TO DO WHENEVER THE COACHES SCREAMED"PRACTICE TIME KIDS". BUT WHEN THE REFS BLEW THE WHISTLE OR IF BOLDIN IS ACROSS FROM HIM HE WAS LOST. J.ALLEN ONLY DOES WHAT HE'S TOLD DURING PRACTICE AND IN THE REAL GAME HE ONLY EXCELS. IN PRESEASON LAST YEAR HE DID WAY BETTER THAN CROCKER DID IN THE REGULAR SEASON. I STILL SEE HIM AS A SAFETY BUT WITH HIS SIZE HE CAN STILL BE A DOMINANT CORNER. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAUSED MOSS TO STUTTER STEP IN OUR FIRST EVER WILDCAT GAME. EITHER THE COACHES ARE TRYING TO GET HIM TO BE MORE COMPETITIVE WITH THESE EXTRA DB'S OR THEY ARE JUST BLIND. J.ALLEN DOES DESERVE THE OTHER SIDE OF W.ALLEN.

Armando, I am not at all sold on your assessment of where Jason Allen sits in the minds of the Trifecta. I think they are penciling him in as the starter at CB, and just looking to add depth in the secondary with Green and now maybe Faggins.
My logic?
If the Tuna needed a starter at CB it begs to consider that he would have gone out early in FA and got a starting caliber CB, rather than brining in guys that are NOT starting caliber but who will provide depth and be decent nickel guys? Why pay money for two backup CB's when for the combined money he could get one starting CB, and leave Allen as the nickel guy?
Posted by: MJZ | March 19, 2009 at 12:13 PM
maybe the ginn and warner clan can scour the dessert looking for the promise land(in ginns case that would be the side line.)

UH RIP , miami hasn't signed faggins yet. SO how did miami get him at a cheap price. I also think jason allen will be battling for the starter stop and not just a roster spot.

Some observations:
1) The problem with neighbors is they invariably complain when you walk around the house naked.
2) I salute the inventors of the following: a) flannel; b) corduroy; c) lingerie; d) Lego; e) the Wildcat formation
3) I can see why Paul Whiteman being called "The King of Jazz" irked so many African-Americans. "White" "Man" usurping the role of African-Americans in creating and developing jazz is obviously insulting. Nevertheless, we must not downgrade the contributions of such legendary white jazzmen as Bix Beiderbecke.
4) I really don't like jazz that much, unless it's melodic.
5) Joe Robbie Stadium (or whatever its current name) is HORRIBLE for football. Like all multi-purpose stadiums, the seats are too far away from the field.
6) My allergies usually begin in earnest in mid-April, yet they're already here. Thank God for Benadryl.
7) I never understood the fascination with Greta Garbo. I can think of a hundred more attractive and compelling actresses, past or present.
8) I can do a really good imitation of Popeye climaxing.
9) I don't know how the heck Popeye could ever climax with Olive Oyl. She is completely unfeminine.
10) The problem with United Nations human rights councils is this: one dictator nation will vote for a second dictator nation to sit as a member on these councils with the implicit agreement that the second dictator nation will never issue a bad report about the first dictator nation.

The truly funny thing about the Allen draft position is that Saban was one of , if not the only coach in the NFL who had the advantage of scouting these guys at the highschool and then college level. He must have had so many notes on all of the players in the draft and he took a bust.

The post at 1:20 am is a perfect example of 'not getting it'. By the way everyone that doesn't know, that post was meant to be sarcastic. But the point is, and we were told this from the very beginning, the Dolphins are in the middle of a complete rebuild. They are not the Patriots. They are not ready to go out and sign high priced veteran free agents because they don't feel they will be in a position to make a run for another couple of years. That's exactly when those free agents will have lost a step and become worthless to the team. There is no trade value at that time and they would be released with nothing to show for it. This is how Spielman tried to build the team and never could figure out why he was such a failure. They are signing guys that they feel they may be able to "coach up". SO, in two years when they have some time under our system they can either contribute on the field, or contribute as trade bait to bring in a piece we need. Everyone who makes sarcastic remarks about the way Tuna is building this team needs to think outside the box. You are looking at the premier teams like the Pats and saying "well they're really good and look at how they're signing guys, shouldn't we be doing it that way"? And the answer is we are doing it that way. Those teams started the same way we are now and it's a major reason why they are contenders every year. They told us we needed to be patient and this wasn't going to be a one year fix. We were told by even Mr. Marino himself that we would need to be patient for at least three years. That plan has not changed because they had some modest success against a very week schedule. THINK PEOPLE!

Cuban, stop fantasizing about what you want to do with Hennes neck. We get it already okay? You don't like our rookie QB because when he puts his helmet on and tilts his head back the skin in his neck folds up. We understand this annoys you for some reason but your schtick is getting old. How are you able to post in here 50 times a day? Please forward me an application from your place of employment, I want in on the scam.

Since I don't really read anyone's posts besides my own (well, sometimes I skim them), I need to ask my good friend, Cuban Menace, a question. Are you a Patriots fan? I notice you get attacked alot on these boards. Even though I'm the biggest Dolphins fan alive, I think it's ridiculous that ANYONE should mock the Patriots given their unbelievable success in this age of parity and salary caps. What they've accomplished is truly incredible.
Or are you a Jets fan?
