Peppers on Pats is a bummer for Dolphins

Nervous? A couple of days ago I wrote a column in the Herald basically saying the New England Patriots, which finished behind the Dolphins in the AFC East race last season, had pulled ahead of the Dolphins this offseason.

And think what you will about that opinion, but it would be hard for anyone to argue the Patriots wouldn't be greatly and significantly improved on defense, their team weakness, if someone the caliber of a Julius Peppers were to join them. Yet, NFL.com is reporting the Patriots appear to be on the verge of trading for Peppers.

That report fails to note that Peppers has not signed the exclusive rights franchise tag tender the Panthers hung on him several weeks ago. And the Panthers cannot speak with Patriots about such a deal unless that tender is signed. So The Charlotte Observer is reporting the teams have not talked.

But that doesn't mean Peppers' agent and the Patriots cannot talk. And the NFL.com report indeed suggests trade parameters have been worked out, with New England sending Carolina the No. 34 overall pick in the draft, the second-round pick it got from Kansas City for Matt Cassel, in exchange for Peppers.

If this is true, it has to be a tremendous bummer for everyone in the AFC East not named the cheaters Patriots.

Look, Vic Carucci, who wrote the story for NFL.com, is an excellent reporter with good contacts. So it is right to believe that where there is smoke, there may be fire. And nowhere have you heard either team deny the story outright.

So you should consider this a very serious possibility. It is not a certainty. But it is possible.

And what, you should ask as tears roll down your face, would Peppers do for the Patriots?

He would instantly improve their questionable pass rush. Think Jason Taylor with the Dolphins circa 2006. Remember that year? The Dolphins used Taylor as a hybrid linebacker, pass rusher, and tormentor of offenses.

The Patriots would likely do the same with Peppers. I remember Nick Saban practically salavating at the thought of having a Peppers in his defensive scheme. When the Dolphins had the No. 2 overall selection in 2005, Saban told me if Peppers, who was drafted second overall in 2002, were available to him, he'd be, "jumping around celebrating." Those were his words.

It stands to reason Saban mentor Bill Belichick will see the same possibilities with Peppers as his disciple saw.

Like I said before, bummer.

I would think it would take a LOT more than 1 2nd round pick to get Peppers. Doesn't franchising require (2) 1st rounders? Sure teams take less ... but I doubt the Panthers are going to give the Cheatriots a Pioli bargin that KC got for Cassell.

565: You really think the No. 34 player in the draft will be better than Julius Peppers? That says it all about your intelligence level. Also, I've turned down so many job offers it's not even funny. I'll work where I want to work and not where some dude who goes by an area code as his name suggests, OK? So come with a better comment than that lame drivel.

Mark: You are not suggesting Peppers isn't an excellent player are you? The guy has double digit sacks in five of his seven seasons. And anyone saying he can't play OLB, look at the facts. He's had at least five passes defensed in each of the past five consecutive seasons and has four interceptions during his career. He is also not 30 years old as many of you are saying. He just turned 29 in January.

This move may or may not happen. But if it does, there is nothing about it that is good news for Miami. Be realistic, people.

One more thing:

A ton of comments on the Derek Cameron Wake blog applauded the Dolphins for getting the guy because he has great pass rush potential. And that is true.

But some of those very posters are scoffing at the thought of Julius Peppers as a pass-rush threat because he's not "proven" as an OLB.

So how do you see a ton of potential in a guy who has never done anything in an NFL game, but simply dismiss a guy who is one of the NFL's premier pass rushers the past seven years?

Think people!

Mando,I pray God for Carolina to pull the Trigger.I love to see the mess the New England patriots will be next year 19 unrestricted free agents next year that's not counting peppers if they get him,the guy never play before in a 3-4 defense before, I do believe is gonna back fire in their face like the Adelius Thomas,so much fanfare for thomas and the guy has done nothing.Plus last time I checked we have a solid left tackle in Jake Long,Mando you are so worried for everything New England does.why are you so scared the pats are supose to be better than the dolphins they are the ones that are supose to win not us,last time I check we were rebuildind the miami dolphins or not?

AGAIN Armando is trying to inject some IQ into some people and one point he said some thing about level of intelligence of a player and how important that is mainly in 27 plus years old players after a few years in NFL that can impact the out come of any game.

while we're building their patching up holes at the expense of future draft picks. They look like the 90's niners in decline. THE AFC WILL BE OURS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO FINNS

GO FINS lives in candy land dreaming about AFC again.Keep dreaming main while read armando last 2 posts and learn something for free.you sure need mando IQ upgrade.

A: nathan barnett: You are a one chromosome short. How's Cutler Ridge this time of year? Yeeesh. Please stick to watching games at Bennigans.

As for Peppers, throw some money If he doesn't bite whatever.

Mando -- it's futile to argue that Peppers isn't a great player...he is. But as in all moves for marquis players, the question is whether getting him is the right move given the price.

If the reports are correct, part of that price would be a high-second (not bad for a player of his caliber) but the second part is still unknown and probably more important -- the contract. Teams can later have buyer's remorse on those. Just ask Al Davis.

Mando: in this instance, yes. I'd take the #34 pick over Julius Peppers.

Why? Because there is a strong possibility that Larry English, James Laurinaitis, Aaron Maybin, Clint Sintim, and Connor Barwin will be available at #34.

Belicheck will take one of those players at a rookie contract over Peppers any day. Look at recent history… big signing of Adalius Thomas vs drafting Jerod Mayo. Think BB will make the same mistake twice???

History says BB can take a rookie (pay him a rookie contract) and get more production out of him than trying to convert a $7-8 mill/year DE into an OLB.

If you spent more time researching things, instead of trying to insult your readers, you might learn a thing or two about the NFL.

The Pats are becoming the new redskins of the NFL or Yankees of MLB.Watch the fall, see the dolphins kicking their sorry old ass in 2 more years, the dolphins need to trade satele and beck and get more draft picks.I hope carolina takes the number 1 and the 2 number twos from the patriots on the deal, dolphins need to draft larry english, kenny britt, and the kid from utah with the first tree picks, add another corner in the later rounds.we will be set for years to come with young studs and they we'll be an ambulant hospital with all the older guys they are picking up

Souljahbeats:

I think you should flip the Jets and Bills on your predictions and then I think you might have it right.

In regards to Peppers. He is a good player when he wants to be and the move make sense for the Patriots but I think Peppers always falls short of his ability. How far has he ever taken Carolina? Where was in the playoff game vs. the Cards last year? Certainly not in Kurt Warner's face. I think the Patriots are starting to move away from their philosphy of avoiding the high priced free agents and concentrating on the second tier guys and make them fit their system. I think the Patriots are the best team in the AFC east but not by as big of a margin as many others think. I do not think the Patriots will be the best team in football next year with or without Peppers.

You guys saying Larry English or Clint Sintum or connor barwin is better the JPepp? I got land in the Atlantic Ocean I'd like to sell you fools.

Let's look at this another way. If the Dolphins were going to give up their higher of two second-round picks for this guy and sign him to a five year contract at $9 million a year, we would all by dancing in the streets.

I want Miami to win as much as anybody. But I recognize that if NE gets Julius Peppers, that is bad news for the Dolphins.

I hope it does not happen.

I don't think Armando is pointing out that the Dolphins should be scared when THEY play the Patriots. After all we do have a pro bowl left tackle named Jake Long and a QB who likes to get the ball out quick. What I think he is saying is that the Patriots will be that much better if they have him and will win some more games making them the clear cut favorite to win the east. He's been building up to this by comparing the Phins and Pats and who is ahead of whom. If the Pats get Peppers they will obviously jump that much further ahead in terms of talent and experience.

And one more thing Mando…

Why would Belicheck trade the #34 pick for Peppers, when Jason Taylor is there for free?

I'm glad you think you have a high football IQ. You're no different than the Jets fans of yesteryear clamoring for Brett Favre.

Remind me, how'd that turn out for them???

Big-name trades don't ever equal Super Bowl wins in today's NFL. Moss, Owens, Favre, Taylor… nada.

Super Bowl teams are built thru draft picks… Roethlisburger, Ward, Holmes, Harrison, Polamalu, Manning(s), Osi, Tuck, Strahan, Snee, Brady, Wayne, Harrison, Saturday, etc, etc, etc.

Boom, roasted.

Hey 565 if you think you can teach Mando about the NFL, why are you coming to his blog instead of having your own blog about the NFL where he comes to you for information? Oh, that must b because you don't know anything.

To seriously argue Larry English will be better than Julius Peppers next year, the year after or the year after that is stupid. Larry English wasn't good enough to play at a BCS school, has never made a play in the NFL and may be out of the NFL in three years for all you know. Peppers has put up borderline HOF numbers.

"Belicheck will take one of those players at a rookie contract over Peppers any day."

If Belichick will take one of those players over Peppers, then why doesn't he?

Why is it being reported by NFL.com that he's thinking of Peppers over them instead?

Your arguement makes sense.

Yo 565 you talking like Armando is the one trying to trade for Julius Peppers. He's the reporter, man. He's not running the Patriots.

You got a beef with the move, call Bill Belicheat, not Armando. He's just telling us what is being reported.

You got issues it seems.

Oh no, we suck again!

Mando I heard a rumor this morning on the internet, that Dolphins are working out a deal with the Arizona Cardinals that will ship out Ted Ginn and Satele for Boldin Is there any truth on that deal?

He had 2 sacks last year and being from North Carolina i also know that he takes plays off and whines. Don't compare him to Jason Taylor. Nick Saban as an evaluator of talent? Saban drafted Jason Allen and sign Joey Harrington. I am soooooo sick of everyone putting the cheatriots on a pedestial especially the Miami media. Why are you so afraid of New England? They're getting older and slower and we are getting younger and faster. Armando were u wearing ur Patriots hat when u wrote this article?

To bad Miami cant bring peppers down here to miami, he'd bring the entire pepper clan(ala ted"hands of stone"ginn). there'd be his wife jalapeno, his son scotch bonnett, his mom bell, his big brother Red, and the patriach Dr.pepper.... to bad...

Navy, we could only hope that the cards have enough room on the sidelines for the entire Ginn household

Pipe down people… I never said Julius Peppers was a bad player. He is (will be) a HOF 4-3 DE. Does that mean he will be worth a damn as 3-4 OLB???

No. It doesn't. Period.

How quickly some of you forget the Jason Taylor, or Matt Roth experiments. Jason Taylor was more dominate at 4-3 DE than Julius Peppers… and he didn't transition too smoothly. Roth was adequate last season, but OLB is still one of Miami's biggest areas of need.

This point is moot anyways. A real reporter (Adam Shefter) says it's 99% NOT going to happen.

Some of you guys are ridiculous. You've got to think long term in the NFL. A rookie drafted at OLB at a rookie contract is a better option (long term) than trying to convert a DE into a OLB. No matter how great the DE is. Peppers has NEVER played standing up. Now you're going to ask him to cover backs/TE? And at $8 mil/year???

And you're questioning my intelligence? Puuulease.

CUBAN, you should read Nathaniel.D post this morning.i just heard there's a talk to ship Ted hands of stone for Boldin and that would make you very happy man.

Imagine cuban menace how many good people together the ginn family and the humanitarian kurt warner jajajaja

BRING PEPPERS ON MISTER STRONG IS ON THAT SIDE NOT SCARED ONE BIT DOLPHINS I ON THE OTER HAND WOULD LOVE TO SEE TAYLOR MAKE A RETURN INSTEAD OF GOING ANY WHERE ELSE. MANDO. YO MANDO. YOUU WHOOO YO MANDO. WRITE AN ARTICLE TO TAYLOR GIVIEN HIM REASONS TO SWALLOW HIS PRIDE AND COME HOME AND LEAD HIS TRUE TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS. S;IT YOUR ALREADY RICH TO THE POINT TO ONLY THING YOU CAN'T BUY IS A COUNTRY. IF NOTHING ELSE FOR THE FANS A CHANCE LIKE THIS IS FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.OF CAUSE YOU SEE JOE's GETTING XX AMOUNT OF MONEY BUT THIS WAS HIS AND ZACHS TEAM. ZACH TOO BUT I SEE THE GODFATHERS GETTIN A YOUNGER FASTER BIGGER SMARTER GROUP TAYLOR AND PORTER I KNOW SUPERBOWL BOUND SOME TIMES THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE CHEAPER WITH MONEY AND MORE OF THE LOVE. I BET HE WOULD ENJOY THE VICTORIES AS MUCH AS THE FANS WOULD ENJOY SEEING HIM OUT THERE AGAIN.

I mean the team player Kurt Warner, poor arizona The guy(Kurt) rape them with a 12 million a year contract

Um, actually 565 guy, I watch the Carolina games all the time because that's what is on TV here. Peppers plays standing up a lot. The Panthers move him around all over the place and he oftens stands up and even covers.

Those are facts.

565, After deep thinking , I Am starting to think long term as 565 is telling us but before that i would like to ask him why he tries to ZING armando every tim he posts.BTW why mr 565 didn't say any thing while the fins were in sewer for 8 years to warn us about their future long term.

Yes Kurt(I want to thank my lord and savior)Warner raped the cards for 12 million..(to bad there was no commandment for monetary rape back in Mose's time)

AFC EAST CHAMPS,any one can that he's a good guy and loves his team like crazy .

Yes pats fan please ship out ted(feet of clay)ginn and his clipboard holding daddy to the desert, maybe kurt(iam so blessed)warner and the ginn family can walk the desert for 40 years like mose's did....

Julius Peppers is a dominating force wherever he plays. Its indeed a big problem for Miami if he goes to the Patsies.

Despite what some toxic mutants from New Jowrzy would say, bringing back Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, both of whom are free agents at the moment, would solidify the front seven. Both of these players have a year or two of good football in them. And I do believe, if the Dolphins get its receiving corps and offensive line in order, this team has realistic Super Bowl game hopes. They should go for it now: they can sign free agents and make draft choices for the future.

Now Cuban just gave Arizona' Kurt a new name in matter of few minutes and it's going to stick like ted hands of stone .OH the name is KURT(iam so blessed)......Menace is very creative name picker.

I think is a done deal(ginn-satele for boldin)they are trying to work out the final touch of the deal Arizona wants to swap 1st round picks in the upcoming draft,Parcells is very happy the dolphins will clear several millions dollars against the cap with the departure of Ginn and Family

Yo jed, You mean the guy(thomas) who wanted a super bowl ring before he retired so miami gave him his release( hows that super bowl ring looking there zach??) and the guy that was to busy dancing up a storm instead of conditioning that proved last year he desperately needed ?? those 2 guys?? i wouldn't take back those 2 if they came free.. let them retire with no championships(Maybe they should have stayed put..)

Despite what some red-neck Hillbilly "GIT-R-DONE " says Zach thomas and jason taylor aren't coming back . Thomas is just about done . WoW , i see alot of teams tripping over thmselves to get thomas, LOL. and then there's taylor who's still dreaming of hollywood and refuses to go to off-season workouts. Wow . they're really going to improve the team . 2 35 year old players at the end of their career are NOT in miami's BIGGER , STRONGER , FASTER, and you can add YOUNGER plans . Dream about the future not the passed . Case closed

Can somebody get me a job?(I hate this blog)

South fla. population just might lose 3.5% of the present population if that deal goes through.....

it's coming ,coming .....the ginn family wiil depart the sun shine of south florida to the desert of AZ. no more swim suits for the family

The way I see it Belicheat gave up Cassel and Vrabel and the 34th pick in the draft IF this trade happens.

In return he gets a prima dona with a bad attitude in return.

If Brady goes down again NE misses the playoffs again.

Focus on what we're doing and move on.

past.

Am I really the only one who's ok with this Peppers to Pats thing, SIMPLY and ONLY because of the fact that now they won't go after Jason Taylor? I mean, just on a loyalty standpoint, that would have been equivalent to Marino going to the Jets. So I personally would rather get sacked a few times by Peppers, than see Taylor laughing it up with Welker on their stupid sideline.

n.j, as usual we think the same at the same time, look at both our post at 12:33 they say the same thing, You may want to seek professional help..LOL...

nj phin fan....Stop thinking about the past and old zack and mack and JT,they all average every day players.ALSO if you want to wear their ugly jersy go ahead ,i forgive you

also ,you might want to get out of that fantasy world of yours and realize that besides taylor and thomas not coming back , miami isn't ready for the super bowl right now.

I ALSO THINK TEDDY GINN IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING SPECIAL. LIKE HENNE BUT CUTLER WHO WILL SAY NO. LIKE BOLDEN BUT BRITT IS A BOLDEN TYPE BUT FASTER AND YOUNGER. NOT SAYING HE WILL EVER BE THAT GOOD BUT HE IS THAT TYPE OF PHYSICAL PLAYER.

navy....i have a job opening , do you know how to clean Hony pees nests but if not will train you for a far.

Monkey are you reading the post correctly, n.j says NO to a zach(all i want is a superbowl ring)thomas and jason(dance the off-season away) taylor..

By the way, i loved you in" planet of the apes"

Cuban , yeah i did see that we posted almost the same thing ,LOL . What can i say. Great minds think alike . Jed GIT-R-DONE needs to get back to the present and the future.

AFC>CHAMPS, Your right ted(my left foot)ginn was a special child, he went to school wearing a bicycle helmet and flotation devices on his upper arms when the little yellow bus picked him up in the morning for school.

thanks to menace and sorry to nj phin fan and to jed what the hell you talking ? it's not easy to keep up with you people.

Things that make you go hmm..

Patriots grabing every proven vet they can get their hands on. No doubt a push for perfection in maybe their last year before freeagency catches up with them. (Cuban Menace)

Talks of trade sending Ginn out west for Boldin. (I would be shocked )

Panthers doing a trade sending Peppers to NE. Would have thought they would have rather seen him on another team seeing how they contenders too. (Aren't the Pats strong enough without him).

People second guessing parcells.
(Maybe they see it as BB has become the Master. You know the old grab the fly from the masters hand trick)

Note everyone: as I have pointed out many times players love to sign with the teams they can steal a ring with before retiring. Signing for less than they could get.

No Problem Monkey call me at my hotline 1-800-The-Monkey if the machine comes up remember to live a number to call back

navy.....if you are looking for job why don't you tell us what can you do my be some one really can get you a good one.

Yeah Monkey, i was about to say the same thing. Dis you read my post correctly ? Also i'm excited to see you in the " new season of Chimp Eden "

SO WHAT STILL NEED DEPTH AND I WOULD TAKE DAN BACK FOR 3RD OR 4TH STRING AND YES LOSE THE ROSTER SPOT AND NEVER LET HIM PLAY LOYALTY IS SOMETHING I BELIEVE IN.
