With Satele gone, who might be next? [Update 4]

DANA POINT, Calif. -- The Dolphins are in draft pick collection mode now.

They have traded center Samson Satele because, as I write in my column for Monday's paper, Bill Parcells has his sights set on 2010 when the team might have 12 unrestricted free agents, assuming there is a collective bargaining agreement reached in the next year. Barring an agreement, the rules about who is and isn't a free agent change, but the Dolphins are going by today's rules looking forward.

Anyway, the only way the Dolphins believe they can overcome a potential exodus of a dozen players in 2010 is by loading up on draft picks in 2009.

So Satele is off to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for an undisclosed pick, bringing back to nine the number of picks Miami will have in the April draft. [Update: The Dolphins have confirmed the trade. ESPN.com is reporting the pick is a sixth-rounder, which seems kind of low to me considering Satele has started 32 games and could have been a good option as a backup center or guard.]

[Update 2: This trade also makes Jake Grove the unquestioned starting center for the team. "We obviously invested a lot of money in Jake," general manager Jeff Ireland said today from the meetings. "We had an opportunity to upgrade at the center position with Jake and did that. And then we had a chance to add draft pick value with this trade so we decided that was the best thing to do. We think it will work out well both ways.]

[Update 3: Ireland confirmed the trade is for a sixth round pick and the teams are also swapping picks in the fourth round. The Dolphins will now have the eighth pick of the fourth round while Oakland drops down and takes the 26th pick of the round, the pick the Dolphins previously owned.

[Update 4: So we know Grove is the starting center. Who is the backup center? There will be a competion. Ireland said Joe Berger and Andy Alleman will be the guys who will compete. "We've got some candidates," Ireland said.]

But it will not end there, if the Dolphins have there their way.

Trade time has come to Miami!

And it says here a number of players on the roster are available for the right price. Quarterback John Beck is available. Receiver Ernest Wilford is available even though trading him would accelerate his bonus money on the salary cap. Same with cornerback Jason Allen. And that 25th overall pick in the upcoming draft?

It might also be available in the right trade-down scenario that would bring Miami later, but extra picks.

It may surprise you to read Allen and the first-round pick might be available. But here's the lowdown on those:

Dolphins coaches are not convinced Allen has what it takes to make it in Miami despite his prototype size and good athletic ability.

I have been told that although the Dolphins continue to hold out hope that the lightbulb will come on for Allen, and although he is a very good special teams player, there is one major frustration about his play: In times of crisis, when it is nitty-gritty time, he seems to abandon all that he has been taught. He reverts to old instincts and ways, and doesn't stick with the technique he's been taught.

That basically means the Dolphins are starting to worry he's not coachable.

That might not be a big problem on a team with a more free-wheeling system. But unless Allen starts to become more focused on technique and details and fundamentals as taught by this coaching staff, he'll never be a starter in Miami and may not even be in Miami an exceedingly long time.

As to the draft pick: The Dolphins have a number of players they like and a number of needs they need to fill so that, believe it or not, is a positive. But I am told by a high-ranking team source, the players the team likes most in the draft will probably be gone in the 10-15 slots. The Dolphins would love to be anywhere in that number.

But they are at No. 25. And the players likely to be available there aren't exactly wowing the Dolphins because similar players might also be available five to 10 slots later. So the Dolphins might be interested in trading down.

By the way, Bill Parcells is not at the owner's meetings here in lovely Orange County. But, surprisingly, neither is owner Stephen Ross. As I reported first on Sunday, Ross was scheduled to fly on his private jet along with coach Tony Sparano and his wife and media relations vice president Harvey Greene and general counsel and salary cap guru Matt Thomas.

But the owner came down with something at the last minute and missed the flight. It is unclear what he has and it is not known if he will be at the meetings at all. Ross is not at the meetings Monday so it seems he's sitting this one out altogether.

[BLOG NOTE: Be sure to check back often on Monday and Tuesday because I'll have updates as stuff happens from the annual owner's meeting.]

Where DiD they send the samoan terror mando?

So much for Satele as our pulling G.

What are we guessing the pick is?

wow...hopefully we got a third at least!

I'm lazy - who are the 12 UFAs for 2010?

Thank you.

Can we ship ted (I've never met a sideline i didn't like ) ginn and his clip board holding daddy???

exiled to Oakland.. (well at least he'll be closer to Samoa.....god luck with goofy al( i'am older then the earth it's self) Davis..

It's music to my ears they want to trade down.

Maybe we can get an early second and a third ?

Also, good for the cap numbers.

I love this management team.

Thanks Dolphin Head office !

I've been wondering what exactly is wrong with Jason Allen for the past 3 years. Finally, some sort of answer. That's why I read your stuff Armando, you have connecttions. Thank You.

Hey Armando, Welcome to Orange County. I live here, so if want any tips on some cool sites or eats while you are here, feel free to drop me a line. I imagine since I have to input it to post, you have my email address.

Mando, I think you're jumping the gun a bit on these 12 Free agents.
First of all, you mentioned Bess in your other article. With only two years of experience, he's not an unrestricted FA. Unless that would change with a potentially uncapped year, but under the current rules, he would be an Exclusive Rights Free Agent.

I also can't see the Fins letting all of those guys go. There was gloom and doom predicted for this year's FA class, yet other than Goodman, every significant player was brought back.

They traded Satele because they don't need him as a back-up and his stock is still somewhat high because he's young, inexpensive and still a good player. Let's not read too much into it.

satelle probably got miami ha 5th isint that what mcclown got miami last year?

This is an everyone wins trade. Satele should make the Raiders team and that means he gets to start. The Phins don't have a guy that is just about good enough to play but doesn't fit in the system and they get a draft pick. The Raiders get a good player.
I am sure that everyone is happy.
As for Wilford, that is one useless Dolphin and if they could get a bag of footballs or a sweaty set of shoulder pads they would be ahead.
I would like to see Ginn get traded for a decent cornerback. We could then draft a good receiver at our first draft pick.

In your Sunday article, you mentioned Davone Bess would be an unrestricted free agent after this coming season? Wouldn't he be restricted only two years out of college?

Oakland does not have a 5th round pick, and their blogs are saying it is a 6th round pick-#8 in the six round, and #168 overall in the draft-that is until the compsenatory picks are released this week. At least we now have a 6th round pick which we did not because of the Jason Ferguson Trade with Dallas, and a high one in the six round.

Dave, very good point about the Jason Ferguson .BTW do you have any tickets you want to give me for free cause i love to go to fins games even one ticket will do .thanks

a 6th round pick for the guy? i was hopeing at least a 3 or 4... guy has 2 yrs worth of NFL experience, young , healthy ... in the right system he could be very good... i think it should be higher

If only we could pull some of Mr Bungles trade for Solai and Wilford, we would be set.

If this is less than a 5th round we got hosed.

I suspect we draft a C in the 3rd round to add depth and groom.

My draft is really starting to look bad now. Only the Stormin' Mormon and half of Ted Ginn's family (I heard they cut his sister :( ) is left...

And that draft looked so promising too...

IN THESE TIMES OF GREAT WORRY ABOUT DOLPHINS NATION IASK EVERY ONE TO NOT FORGET THAT WE ARE THE AFC EAST CHAMPS UNTIL NEXT YEAR WHEN WE WILL DEFEAT THE THREE AMIGOS PATS,BILLS AND THE JETS,LET'S ALL CHANT....FINS CHAMPS.......PATS SUCKS AND PLEASE FINS MAKE SURE OUR PLAYERS EAT BEST FOOD BEFORE GAMES START LIKE LOBSTER TACOS AND PASTA ALLA ITALIANA.GO CHAMPS

hmmmm... We get a 6th round pick for a guy we drafted in the second.. AND, we have no backup for a center who has been labeled injury-prone.. That off-season work out program the Fins implemented really worked, but it's starting to get scary!!

Extend Bess while he's still cheap! That kid can play!!!!

Mando,

Can you update us as to which pick the Dolphins will be receiving for Satele when that information becomes available? I am predicting it's a third round pick

Mando et All,

Is Satele worth less as a pulling guard/ depth than a low round pick?

Chico

I don't really like the trade. I know I am in the minority on this point. I just feel that since Satele was surrounded by two sub-par starting guards last year, it affected his play. Was he run over by Wilfork the year before? In addition, Grove has never been healthy. Satele has never been hurt. That extra inch doesn't tell me he is going to do better against those big guys. In fact, the extra inch at the same weight tells me he is actually smaller than Satele. Also, that extra inch means a higher center of gravity. Damn it, now Grove is even less stable. Who's our backup center now? We signed a veteran center? Didn't we?

As for guys that are tradeable: I would add Ginn to Mando's list.

Anything less then a 4th rounder we gave a starting center away!!!

larry c. is on the money... the man has been our starter since his rookie season.. and he is talented, might not fit their mold but he is a solid player and trading him for a 6 is stupid, what are we gonna draft another shawn murphy.

they might have done because of contracts and 2010 free agency, but come on. we had nice depth on the line if we kept him.

Ask any woman and they'll tell you... An extra inch can make a HUGE difference...We'll see with Grove...

If we traded Satele for anything less than a fourth round pick, I will be very upset because we got robbed. The kid started two years since being drafted without missing a beat. He is young and relatively cheap. Even if he is not starting with us, he would have provided great young depth given the fact that we had injury problems with our guards and the fact that the center we picked up from the Raiders is often injured. Cannot figure this one out if we traded him for a low round pick unless we absolutely have fallen in love with a center in this upcoming draft that is doing to be there in the third round and beyond area that we feel we have a great chance to pick up and develop. We will see, but I liked Satele alot.

"have THERE way'??? Seriously? Nice grammar, dude, anyone proofreading over there?

I have to agree with Coach Sparano. Get off Ginns back. Go Look at his highlights from last year, he is making improvments and with a true number 1 WR and moving him around Ginn will be very good. Looking for his break out year next year, if they get him some help.
Also I hope Beck is traded. He is over paid for a 3rd string, Fins need the caps space for other players. But who would be a good replacement for the number 3 QB spot, any rookies looking to be a up and coming project?

According to Tim Graham of ESPN, we are receiving a 6th Round Pick and will swap picks with the Raiders in another (undisclosed) round.

And the winner is.....The Raiders, depending on the draft choice they gave up.

Satele is young, reliable, has upside and can improve. One year ago everyone was gushing about how good he is. I remember even reading in one of Armando's columns that Satele was one of the few players Parcells liked upon starting his regime in Miami.

Grove is not that much bigger than Satele is, yet much more injury prone and his five years in the league has hardly made his mark.

This is a questionable move.

the fins are the winner her ,if you look at what Satele did for fins, the answer will be NOTHING so leave tuna think and trade and fans should go watch the games and eat hot dogs.

we will win super bowl but you ask when?i say i don't know then you ask me again but when? i say please father jesus make us win and be the we can be.GO FINS

Satele is hopefully more valuable than a 6th rounder. I would only trade him for a 3rd or fourth with conditionals like another 6th if he starts more than 75%

Beerfin.....you can start 100 percent of games but you have any i pmact so what's the big deal then ,i can start 100 percent too but i suck.......btw in the saban years players started most games but they in the NFL sewer .

Man, this is like nails on the chalkboard for me....

--So Satele is off to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for an undisclosed pick, bringing back to nine the number of picks Miami will have in the April draft.

But it will not end there, if the Dolphins have there way.

Trade time has come to Miami!--

But it will not end there is the Dolphins have "THEIR" way.... OMG... ugh

Robby Marino , joe berger who can play both g and c will be the backup at center. Also for everybody else . Height and weight has nothing to do with how strong a player is. Grove benches over 500 pounds and squats over 800 pounds . He is much stronger than satele with a mean streak. Grove is very strong on his initial push which the trifecta thinks is important for the c position.

if miami could trade that first for a early pick in the second round they may get clay matthews and brian cushing

PhinPhan54,,,,,i am sorry but you are very wrong, i gree with Robby Marino cause he shows one thing he knows better than you which is football

any info about the pick swap with the raiders? hopefully we move up in a round, not down!

i have a feeling that fins knows tuna will be out in a year so they are trying to unload people to make sure they would have money after nfl new rules kicks in next two years.

Roby, our back up is Joe Berger who, as nj phin fan pointed out can play guard and center.
I stated last two weeks that we needed to trade Satele, who was a reach when picked by Cam Cameron in the second round. Grove is also bigger and stonger, a Parcells type of player. We get a 6th rounder and swap late round selections from the Raiders. Now we have a pick in every round.

confirmed by me!!! 6th rounder for satele.

What round are we swapping pick positions with the Raiders? It might turn out to be a good deal if we swapped our 56th pick to move up to the Raiders 40th position...

I think this trade would make much more sense then.

if we trade slots i hope its in round 3 where we go from 21st pick to 7th pick in the 3rd and pick up a 6th we didnt have due to the ferguson trade.

pick up in the 3rd chase coffman TE from missou or victor harris cb from vtech this kid will be a beast ala ty law style.

Joe Burge is way better than Mr.Satele and please trade Henne for Cutler.

Mando(original!) Yes that would be nice and I really like Chase Coffman and he ahs real good value there in the third round and might fly under the radar because he didn't work out on Missouri's pro day due to injury.

i agree we have to trade HENNE for CUTLER.

Guys , oakland doesn't have a 5th round pick. So if we have swapped picks in rounds 4 or higher that is a big jump in a round. That is a huge part of this deal .

Hey AFC EAST CHUMP,

Man what are you smoking, try to make some sense and comment on the issues on hand. Nobody is taking your crap seriously, you are waste on this or any other blog!!!

NJ PHIN FAN ,good job explaining the bottom line of this deal.now you write in blue no crazy dumb guy can pretend to be you.

Luggi, thanks. LOL

ALFONSO FROM FARM......I AM SORRY IF I DIDN'T SOUND SMART AS YOU WOULD WISH ,I MUST SAY THAT I ALWAYS BLAMED MY FATHER FOR NOT SENDING ME TO SCHOOL EVER BUT I AM TRYING TO LEARN AND WRITE EVERY DAY FOR THREE HOURS ON MY OWN,AS FOR YOU I WISH YOU KNOW THAT JESUS IS OUR LORD AND OUR QB IN LIFE MEAN WHILE I JUST LEARNED 2 NEW WORDS......SCREW YOU ALFONSO

raiders have high picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. to me, the trade would also make more sense if we are moving up in one of those with the swap (my guess is the 4th, but am hoping for the 3rd).

someone (reporters?) needs to figure out this part of the story asap, it seems that this is the most important part of the story that is still unkown!

Like I said, CHUMP! I never said you were stupid but definately ignorant. Don't blame your father, go read a dictionary then and learn more than 2 words because its obvious that 3 hours of writing isn't working for you...

ALFONSO FRON THE CORN FARM....FROM ALL PEOPLE YOU CHOSSE TO TALK TO ME CAUSE YOU FELT BETTER THAN ME BASED ON WRITING FOOTBALL BUT I MUST SAY THAT YOU ARE A GOOD SAMPLE OF A PERSON HAS NO SELF RESPECT TO TAKE ON A PERSON NOT ON YOUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION FURTHER MORE I THINK YOU ARE REAL IDIOT TRYING TO PICK A FIGHT WITH ME WHEN YOU ARE A BANANA BOY,GET SHORTY CREEP FROM THE FARM.

are u serious on the new rules u cant lunge at a qb while on the floor so if some de or dt makes a shoestring tackle it will be called a penalty and u cant strike a db while running an int i cant belive this just put out the flag belts and lets play flag football this is b.s.

If it's in the 2nd or 3rd rnd the pick swap could be huge! Later rnds? Probably not so huge.

alfonso from nicaragua, nice to hear from you man ,is it true you work on a corn farm now?
