With Satele gone, who might be next? [Update 4]

DANA POINT, Calif. -- The Dolphins are in draft pick collection mode now.

They have traded center Samson Satele because, as I write in my column for Monday's paper, Bill Parcells has his sights set on 2010 when the team might have 12 unrestricted free agents, assuming there is a collective bargaining agreement reached in the next year. Barring an agreement, the rules about who is and isn't a free agent change, but the Dolphins are going by today's rules looking forward.

Anyway, the only way the Dolphins believe they can overcome a potential exodus of a dozen players in 2010 is by loading up on draft picks in 2009.

So Satele is off to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for an undisclosed pick, bringing back to nine the number of picks Miami will have in the April draft. [Update: The Dolphins have confirmed the trade. ESPN.com is reporting the pick is a sixth-rounder, which seems kind of low to me considering Satele has started 32 games and could have been a good option as a backup center or guard.]

[Update 2: This trade also makes Jake Grove the unquestioned starting center for the team. "We obviously invested a lot of money in Jake," general manager Jeff Ireland said today from the meetings. "We had an opportunity to upgrade at the center position with Jake and did that. And then we had a chance to add draft pick value with this trade so we decided that was the best thing to do. We think it will work out well both ways.]

[Update 3: Ireland confirmed the trade is for a sixth round pick and the teams are also swapping picks in the fourth round. The Dolphins will now have the eighth pick of the fourth round while Oakland drops down and takes the 26th pick of the round, the pick the Dolphins previously owned.

[Update 4: So we know Grove is the starting center. Who is the backup center? There will be a competion. Ireland said Joe Berger and Andy Alleman will be the guys who will compete. "We've got some candidates," Ireland said.]

But it will not end there, if the Dolphins have there their way.

Trade time has come to Miami!

And it says here a number of players on the roster are available for the right price. Quarterback John Beck is available. Receiver Ernest Wilford is available even though trading him would accelerate his bonus money on the salary cap. Same with cornerback Jason Allen. And that 25th overall pick in the upcoming draft?

It might also be available in the right trade-down scenario that would bring Miami later, but extra picks.

It may surprise you to read Allen and the first-round pick might be available. But here's the lowdown on those:

Dolphins coaches are not convinced Allen has what it takes to make it in Miami despite his prototype size and good athletic ability.

I have been told that although the Dolphins continue to hold out hope that the lightbulb will come on for Allen, and although he is a very good special teams player, there is one major frustration about his play: In times of crisis, when it is nitty-gritty time, he seems to abandon all that he has been taught. He reverts to old instincts and ways, and doesn't stick with the technique he's been taught.

That basically means the Dolphins are starting to worry he's not coachable.

That might not be a big problem on a team with a more free-wheeling system. But unless Allen starts to become more focused on technique and details and fundamentals as taught by this coaching staff, he'll never be a starter in Miami and may not even be in Miami an exceedingly long time.

As to the draft pick: The Dolphins have a number of players they like and a number of needs they need to fill so that, believe it or not, is a positive. But I am told by a high-ranking team source, the players the team likes most in the draft will probably be gone in the 10-15 slots. The Dolphins would love to be anywhere in that number.

But they are at No. 25. And the players likely to be available there aren't exactly wowing the Dolphins because similar players might also be available five to 10 slots later. So the Dolphins might be interested in trading down.

By the way, Bill Parcells is not at the owner's meetings here in lovely Orange County. But, surprisingly, neither is owner Stephen Ross. As I reported first on Sunday, Ross was scheduled to fly on his private jet along with coach Tony Sparano and his wife and media relations vice president Harvey Greene and general counsel and salary cap guru Matt Thomas.

But the owner came down with something at the last minute and missed the flight. It is unclear what he has and it is not known if he will be at the meetings at all. Ross is not at the meetings Monday so it seems he's sitting this one out altogether.

[BLOG NOTE: Be sure to check back often on Monday and Tuesday because I'll have updates as stuff happens from the annual owner's meeting.]

DOLPHINS NEXT YEAR THEY WILL BE THE AFC EAST CHAMPS PERIOD

THE PICK SWAP IS ROUND 4.

Reported by Omar Kooky on his twitter page.

They Move 19 spots

The trade surprises me.Satele was over powered at times at center. But he started from day one, so he could play. We need depth; also thought he was big enough and quick enough to play R Guard, which we currently need!?

Looks like we swapped 4th rounders as well. So looking at the trade value chart that is like gaining a high 5th round pick. No to bad a deal then.

Being a longtime finfan from Hawaii it always feels great when the Dolphins draft guys with Hawaii ties, but also harder to see when they get released from the Dolphins...well except for Mauia that guy was an idiot for what he did off the field.

Well that's business I guess but a 6th rounder??? damn that's too cheap. If we do move up in a round maybe we are moving up in the second or third round in the draft?

Aloha

As loyal readers to my (I mean Armando's) blog know, I have quite the imagination. So I was thinking (while supposedly doing work) - what if you took the 9 most recent Presidents of these United States during their peak physical years, assigned them to play an appropriate baseball position for their frame, and gauged how well they would do in amateur ball. I think we can all agree that the results would look something like this:

Numbers represent: Batting Average, Home Runs and RBIs.

Catcher - Bill Clinton (.246 21 68)
1st Base - Jimmy Carter (.316 18 81)
2nd Base - Richard Nixon (.238 3 28)
3rd Base - George W. Bush (.274 20 80)
Shortstop - Barack Obama (.263 2 31)
Left Field - George H.W. Bush (.280 14 70)
Center Field - Gerald Ford (.341 28 125)
Right Field - Ronald Reagan (.313 34 114)
Designated Hitter - Lyndon Johnson(.277 30 104)

The astute will note the irony that Lyndon Johnson (my designated hitter) died before the advent of the designated hitter rule in 1973. The irony is delicious.

Boy, that's some draft Mueller and Cam had that year... Ginn is not bad but a bit of a chicken when it's time to get physical... Satele gets traded for a high 5th rounder basically... John Beck will never be the starting QB of MIami, so good luck Johnny boy... Soliai got suspended twice last year and looks to be extremely immature... Mauia is history... Another draft gone down the tubes... Way to go...

I AM SURE THAT BP AND CO WILL DO WAY BETTER IN DRAFT DAY THAN THE LAST FEW TIMES MIAMI DID WITH THEIR DRFT PICKS AND WE WILL DESTROY PATS,JETS AND BILLS,GO FINS THE FUTURE IS HERE AND NOW EVEN IF ALFONSO BOY DOESN'T LIKE,GO FINS

Luggi,

Yes, thanks man, I just got promoted by the AFC EAST CHUMP.

Chump,

Thanks for the promotion and actually I'm a lover not a fighter and I am down with you on one thing, hope we take the crown man and whip our EAST rivals all 6 regular season games. Lets move on...

Nathaniel,

I must apologize to the EAST CHUMP, man you are the one way out there, don't you have somewhere else to blog?

The rest of you guys,

Great blogging, great insight on the Dolphins, peace...

Looks like the Satele trade is equivalent to the 20th pick in the 4th round, according to the NFL draft chart. That's not bad value.

(We get pick #104 worth 86 and pick #168 worth 25.2 and give up pick #122 worth 50. Doing the math that equals which is equivalent to the somewhere between the 20th and 21st pick in round 4.)

At one point it was believed Grove was the best center available in his draft class. He has never lived up to that potential and is frequently injured. We just gave up a 2nd round pick to get a 4th and a 6th? Granted, Satele couldn't block for crap and he couldn't reach anyone in space BUT who is going to sub in for Grove when he gets hurt. This whole move stinks and combined with the pick-up of a backup DE last week, one really has to wonder what the Dolphins are up to... it better be one heck of a surprise draft (think Matthews or Maluaga, Heyward-Bey, and Butler) because the FA's and trades have sucked.

Alfonso .....Nice job making peace with every one ,there's no reason to not to.BTW our Coffee of costa rica is way better than your Coffee from Nicaragua .i can't wait for the day all of florida will speak only in english.

I know a lot of recent articles suggested the Dolphins want to trade down because they don't like the talent in the late 1st round. However, since they are stockpiling draft picks, there is a possibility that they are accumulating value to trade up if a guy they love slips to the mid-1st round.

ALFONSO........PEACE MY FIN FAN FRIEND.

I trust Tuna & Helpers- but the trade of Satele bothers me. He had the size and speed to play rt guard. we need a rt gurad. Was a two yesr starter-did not have off field issues.
Was not too expensive. Was not injury prone. Can some one explain to me his down side? We still need a rt guard, IMO he was the right answer.

The Fish also traded spots with the Raiders in the 4th round. Not a bad deal.

OK bubbaba4.....i know how you feel now but should we fire tuna and co and hire you, tell me any thing, now i want you to obey our master tuna until we start loosing then we can turn on him like pit bulls.

Does anyone think that if we swapped 3rd round picks with the Raiders, it could be to draft Pat White early on day 2, to be a WR/3rd QB/wildcat QB. I think its possible that White will be sitting there early on day 2 and the phins may have taken the 6th and swapped in the 3rd to be able to take him. Also that would allow Beck to be traded for an extra pick as well.

Addition by subtraction... keep it up Parcells!!!

Bubba, they gave Satele a chance to start on another team... He would have been a backup with us... also, we have a RG, his name is Donald Thomas and we got him in the 6th round last year- kinda explains the faith our FO has in finding talent.

History, we moved up from the bottom of the fourth round to just after the third- and we added a sixth, which may not be much for some teams, but we got a starter out of it last year (and if you add Ferguson's production this year and last year, giving our sixth this year to Dallas looks pretty solid, too).

"Satele is no longer a member of our football team."
-Tony Sporano

Finsupremo,

I feel you man, good points.

I think the 6th rounder and swapping spots in the 4th are cheap for a player that started 2 years without injuries, but I guess the production just wasn't there...

Trade Henne for Cutler? Where do you guys get this crap?

And to all of those that say Grove is the same as Satele, you don't know what you are talking about. The players have very different styles of play...Grove is a beast that gets a big push off the ball (watch how he handled the hurricanes when he was at vt) while satele is better as a pulling blocker and doesn't get much push off the ball...grove is much stronger and nastier...

We have Berger to back him up and isn't Al Johnson or Andy Alleman a center too?

Really shows that Sporano/Parcells/Ireland (SPI? SPIes?)like having "their" guys... I mean, Sporano was an OL coach, so you have to think that if the lines are their specialty, they must have put a bit more into it and determined Satele has got to go... I see your points Souljah, and I thought the same thing (that it was a cheap return), however, you have to think that Football people generally deserve the benefit of the doubt... further it by these football people actually specialize with the OL, and there has to be something there that makes this a good move.

A. You haven't even really seen what Henne can do.

B. Cutler is a diva, whiner, and has a losing record as a starter.

C.Josh McDaniels - a guy who has a good qb eye - wants to trade him.

D.He managed to orchestrate losing games against buffalo, oakland, KC, and Jacksonville last year. Awesome.

please trade HENNE for cutler the man.

Mike,

I agree with you 100% on Cutler, he is a whiny crybaby, who has proven nothing except that he is not able to get his team to the playoffs

Al Johnson is with the Pats now...

cutler way better than henne who's going to be the future interception machine for the fins very soon.

I hope you guys know what this means ... were pickin up a center in either the third or fourth round, and there was someone there the tuna liked. Look for a good , young center to act as a back up for grove, and maybe competing for a starting job at either center or guard.

oh, I didn't know Johnson was gone, but we still got Alleman, and I just checked, he is definitely a center

WHAT DID HENNE PROVED SO FAR FIN FANS ?BIG NO THING OOOOOOOO

I just don't like this trade. I understand why it happened but I think it was not good value for a starting OL who is young and has never missed a game. Granted, he was not the best at his position but he was not the worst either. I just believe you can never have enough OLs especially with our injury prone OGs. I thought Satele's versatility to play either position was worth keeping.

good news on the 4th round swap! god work peeps. grove has more potential, but only time will tell if this was good trade.

Swapping 4th rd picks clinches this one for me. Satele was going to ride the pine. We would have gotten caca for him next year. Kind of like what we can expect to get for Beck...wow that draft sucked!! Thanks CAM CAM and Muller.

Henne has proved that he is the team's future qb... he would have been the starter if Pennington didn't show up...Henne has been great in the pre season and garbage time he got in the regular season... He doesn't have to prove anything right now except that he is a hard worker and has patience to wait for his chance...

i know you are "many me" just trying to bust dolphin fan's chops, but I would take Pennington or Henne over Cutler any day.

The only things Cutler has proven (and he has had his chance, unlike henne) are that he is a selfish player, makes bad decisions, is a crybaby, and is way over-rated...

thank you, that is all.

-souljahbeats

So, basically, we traded Wes Welker to a division rival- vastly improving them in the process- for a 6th round draft pick. Nice job ,Mueller

I'm shocked of how little we get for Satele, for that we should keep him as backup center and guard

i think that the upgrade in the 4th is to get Barden

SOULJ, MOST PLAYERS in draft are hard workers but most of them will not be selected,i was a very hard worker at school but i didn't pass.i asked what HENNE PROVED and you gave pla pla pla, watch when HENNE start his interceptions you will awaken to the bad reality and back to the basEment years.LOL

Although Tuna & Co. did a hell of a job last season...not everything was perfect and we have Wilford to prove that to be true.

I hope this doesn't bite us in the rear once Grove starts to get injury prone again. I was expecting better than moving up spots in the 4th round and a 6th round pick.

I'm not seeing this as a Parcells type move being that Satele was healthy for both seasons he was a Dolphin and was also versatile which Bill loves in his players.

Satele started his college career with Hawaii as a guard and played center in his final season in college. I'm pretty sure if he played guard from day 1 with the fins he would still be on the roster

SOULJ, I SALUTE YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT ABOUT HENNE THE GREAT ,HE'S GOING TO WIN FOR US THE SUPER BOWL IN2009 AND HE WILL BE THE MVP BY FAR DESTROYING BRADY,MOSS AND T.O.CHANT FIN FANS CHANT..... IN JESUS AND HENNE WE TRUST

OK bubbaba4.....i know how you feel now but should we fire tuna and co and hire you, tell me any thing, now i want you to obey our master tuna until we start loosing then we can turn on him like pit bulls.

No, I don't pretend to be an expert- just an interested fan-I personally like what they have done, so far, but, I don't blindly accept every decision; but is not like I have the power to change any of them- also-I am willing to ask about something I don't understand. GO PHINS!!!!!

Ok kids... the menace has arrived, whats the subject today??? i saw a blog about "what has henne done? we should trade him" hmmmmm, trade chad (size 96 neck)henne for jay (interception again) cutler, dought it will happen, but you never know...

Peace bubbaba4.........it's okay if you don't understand a lot of football, just remember to read my posts regularly every morning after you wake up and every night before you go to bed
and if you have a question about football, just leave me a note and i will get back to you as soon as possible

What concerns me is it was not Parcells who wanted the DE we traded for; it was Parcells who demanded we get another pick to make up for that trade. So we did. I wonder what Parcells thinks now.

I think parcells is thinking what he should eat for dinner tonite..

OK kids what's the 1st Q for the menace??

Henne is going nowhere and is the future of our franchise. As for Pennington trading him now might help but there is no cover. Beck can't be traded if he can't get on the bench however the Lions are really weak there and may trade high 2nd for cover and we trade down for a couple of picks. I absolutely agree we need to save on the cap.

This centre better know how to play or we will be where BP left Jets Dallas and the Pats...hoping for a great new coach to come in and turn things round....AGAIN!

Terrible trade: 6th and move up in the FOURTH? Are they nuts? Should have kept him as a backup or guard. Berger? he can't even get on the playing field. Please. This is a stinker. Only the second bad move Parcells et al. have made. The first being Wilford.

If it's all about depth as the "be patient" guys keep saying - why would you get rid of inexpensive, starting caliber talent at back-up - especially when the guy who is your de facto starter is oft injured? This stinks as bad as my dog after she's rolled around on some dead animal.

I have no problem with getting rid of Satele but the return was far too low.

Cuban, what do you think trading Penne not Henne for Cutler? since penne is getting really old plus He looks nicer than penne and the big thing that drives me crazy how fin fans are so sure that Henne will be the star for this team?

PLEASE TRADE PENNE NOW NOT LATER AND KEEP OUR SAVIOR HENNE,BY GRACE OF GOD AND HENNE WE WILL AND WE MUST AT ALL COASTS WIN SUPER IN MY LIFE TIME OR IN 23 YEARS JUST WIN NOW.PRASIE THE LORD AND OUR JESUS HENNE OUR MVP ON EARTH....GO FINS

IF WE TRADE HENNE THEN HAVE BIG PROMBEM WHY HENNE NOT PENNE AND IF MOSS NOCOME WE LOSE THE SUPER BOWL

chad(size 96 neck) henne comes out of mich. a school that can send out some good Q.Bs e.g a guy playing for a certain team located in the northeast , whats his name?? oh yeah tom brady, and lets not forget bob griese offspring, so the air breathing mammals that just so happen to live in the ocean might have something with " THE NECK" time will tell, we can only hope, also dont see chad penn. going anywhere for at least 2 more years, i know what your saying" but cuban he's only signed until the end of this season" but trust me bill(the tuna) hates turn overs and chad p. doesn't commit that many....I see chad. penn playing till he get's injured, then lets see how "the neck" plays..

AFCCHAMPS, relax take a deep breath and take a shot of some Patron...the fish(mammals ) will be fine...

Look everbody that idiotic moron Cuban Menace is at it again. Not only is he posting with his regular stupid post names , he has now advanced his stupidity by posting in blue and black post names to try to throw us off . LOL What a F'n social parasite !

anyone here wondering why the hell we havent given Torry Holt a call? We need a number 1 wr sooooooo badly, and we are looking like the obvious choice for 4th in the AFC East right now considering we havent gotten any better yet in the off season whereas everybody else has made HUGE moves. I know that Parcells isnt a free agency kind of guy but with absolutely no depth at receiver and Ginn is a specialty guy, and Camarillo is a slot guy at best, WE NEED A #1!!!! Drafting a guy will not be a solution since it takes an average of 3 years to develop a wr into that prototypical #1, and Holt is available and has at least 3 good productive seasons ahead of him. Not to mention the experience he would bring that could potentially rub off on the rest of our receiver corps.

M@@c, hows the serial killing going on in washington???

You sick freak..
