GM Jeff Ireland: No to Vick, maybe to Taylor

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland just finished his draft press conference moments ago. Some highlights:

Ireland said the Dolphins are "looking at," the possibility of returning Jason Taylor to Miami. But in his lukewarm response to the idea, Ireland said the team had to measure several factors.

"I think you have to look at every possible situation at this time of year," Ireland said. "Our level of interest, I'm not going to tell you where it's at right now. But I would say you have to look at all these things, but with players like Jason, he's going to be 35 in September.

"You have have to look at whether veteran players are progress-stoppers for younger players. You have to look at that. There’s a lot of other things you have to look at. Economics have something to do with it. And being so close to the draft, so you have to look at what’s available in the draft. So I always say, you never know what’s falling off the tree and if there’s an acorn down there. We’re looking at I’m not going to say that we’re not. But the interest level, I’m not going to comment on it."

I reported in an earlier blog today the Dolphins are the only AFC East team that has not shown significant interest in Taylor. Buffalo, the Jets and the New England have all either called Taylor's agent or had their owner (Robert Kraft) show interest in signing Taylor.

Ireland did comment on Michael Vick who is expected to become available to NFL teams by September. It has been speculated that Vick would make a good wildcat package triggerman.

So are the Dolphins interested?

"We don't think so right now," Ireland said. "We're not really interested in going after Michael."

Ireland also said that right guard Donald Thomas, who was injured in the first game of 2008 and missed the entire season, is "100 percent" healthy.

"He's doing really good," Ireland said.

Ireland said left guard Justin Smiley's condition is also looking up, although he obviously isn't as advanced in his rehabilitation as Thomas. "He's doing well," Ireland said.

The general manager made the point that if a player were struggling with injury or rehabilitation from an injury, it would affect the Dolphins draft plans, but that isn't the case with any player, strongly suggesting Greg Camarillo is recovering from his knee injury and surgery.

Ireland even said Miami's No. 1 receivers are Ted Ginn Jr. and Camarillo.

On the draft front, Ireland confirmed the team worked out receivers last week. But that was only part of the story.

"We looked at 35 different players last week," he said. "We looked at offensive linemen, safeties, cornerbacks, receivers. We looked at a lot of players."

Ireland admits the cornerback spot is a focus in the draft.

"We have three UFA corners next year," he said. "So that was a position we looked at in free agency. We got some guys there and we missed on some guys we looked at. We have to look at that position in the draft."

Will Allen is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent (UFA) next year. Joey Thomas and Nathan Jones are also scheduled to be UFAs after this coming season.

What a boring offseason.

Where's the ACLU on this one? This is clearly a case of age discrimation. There's a law that says you can't hire or fire someone because of their age.

Football draft is right around the corner, and that's what the tuna need to draft first, a shut down corner, (2)A physical wide reciever with some speed that could go over the middle,(3)a solid young NT,(4)and then try to pick up Aquain Bolton in trade (give them rookie wr in draft), and resign Jason Taylor. This would put Miami back into the play-offs as AFC Champions again, with a really good shot to go deep into the play-offs, like AFC rep in SB! I hate the jets and their stupid fans as much as I hate the Oakland Raiders! I dispise the Cheating Pats( I want another 20 years of Dolphins domination over pats again)! The Bills best highlight?/last season is OJ going to prison, So screw all pats, bills, and wets fans on this Dolphins blog, you stupid bunch of retards!

jdovedolphindefender..........what you want and dream is one thing and reality is another......stop dreaming and get ready for Tom,Moss.Welker and T.O to bring you back to your rightful place in the AFC 3-13

i still think jt can create a double team thats a good defensive stradegy even being out for 3rd downs possibly giving way for roth or wake on 3rd down possibly what about injury and depth...... Get J.T.

The reports about the players who vioated drug policy for Marijuana from the combine are: BJ. Raji, Percy Harvin, and Vontae Davis. and Cushing and Matthews for steroids. In my opinion Miami should not be interested in any of these players any more. If used once Marijuana stays in a persons system usually less than 10 days and it would take regular use for it to stay in a players system for up toi 30 days. That means on th eve of the most important tryout in there whole lives that they couldnt stop smoking Marijuana for one month so they could make millions of dollars. Sound familiar to you? Well for all those Ricky Williams fans out there me being one it should. As far as the roid users and lets remember that Shawn Merriman was also one of them I dont think we should be interested either. Now the fact that Matthews was a 170lb walk on 4 years ago makes perfect sense and Cushings look like s self made man. In onther words God didnt make these players big, the workout room and enhancement drugs did and much like Tony Mandrich alot of the air is likely to come out of the tires once they do, also what about the "explosiveness" they are displaying on film? How much of that is do to steroids? Too much of a question to find out. Let another team like the Raiders or Cowboys take these players and deal with there headaches. Sure Ricky Wiliams is on the team and is one toke away from a banashment, but Ricky Williams is alot more mature then these 20 year old kids coming out of college. Now I wouldnt touch Vontae Davis for a 2nd rounder. 20 years old, immature, attitude problem, problems with coaches, marijuan user, its tarting to add up. I have used and enjoyed marijuana myself in my lifetime but test clean at this time. Something as simple as getting a $12 an hour job has caused me to stop smoking, I simply cannot fathom not being able to stop for millions of dollars, that is frankly scary in my opinion...

This is crazy. Sign JT now if the price is right. Age should not be the main factor -our two best players last year were Porter and Penny. JT had one bad season because of injury and has made it clear he wants to reunite with the Dolphins as do the Dolphins player who have see first hand what he bring to the field. If he goes to New England next year we can only blame ourselfs not Jason. He will tear it up next year mark my words!

WE SHOULD AND AE MUT REUNITE JT WITH OUR FINS AND MAKE ME HAPPY AS FAR FOR THE RESULTS I COULDN'T CARE LESS IF MY BEST PLAYER EVER AND EVER COMES BACK BUT FINS MUST PAY FAIRLY CAUSE HE HAS A LRGE FAMILY TO CARE FOR AND IF E WANTS ZACK.T TO COME BACK AS A HELP FOR HIM TO WIN IT ALL THAT'S FINE WITH ALL OF US.
GO FINS,GOD MAY BLESS OUR JT

AND WE WILL WIN THE SUPER BOWL.

HOLD UP DOLFANS!!let's see how Jeff Ireland drafts after Tuna is gone b4 we make him out 2b Ron Wolf or something..for him to refer to JT as a progress stopper?tells me he's a freakin jerk who doesnt recognize that JT is the greatest defensive a player in Dolphins History..I say bring him back for 2 years JT is a freak of an athlete and in sure he has at least 2 good years in him..anybody can suffer a freak injury like he did last year

taylor is coming back....it would bring more positive attention and bring more fans....they can sell more 99 jerseys

the worst number on a jerset is 99
the best number is 1-15

Hey Gpats,

Brady's best number is 911. He will need it when he gets sacked and hurt. HURT I SAY!!!!!
Poor poor Gpats....

The cuban is now taking Qs Whats the first Q for the menace?

The cuban just wants to know will the big dummie be performing with the cheer leaders at half time this upcoming season?

Yeeeeeeeessssssssss. The menace is in da house.

yeeeeeeeeeeees.....mr junglelito in the house even if he doesn't know a thing about football but it's late so we settle for any thing, tell us any any thing like do you love jason taylor?

I Think miami should hire MAXMERC as the dolphins new gm. Miami should fire ireland since he's a idiot and doesn't know what he's doing and hire MAXMERC. Yeah that's it. That and bringing back J Taylor will bring miami the super bowl

wow, mr bunglito and i thought you are dumb.it's very good plan but what position you like JT in the team then plus tell why you think fins will not go to playoff this year?

I think MAXMERC next move is to bring back Z thomas because he's the greatest lb in history to play for the dolphins. How can ireland be such a freaking jerk and not bring him back. Then MAXMERC next move is to shoot the movie The flinestones take south beach starring taylor( FRED ) and thomas ( BARNEY ) .

do you read my mind bunglito ,i just was thinking about that, what you thing of this idea of tading both chads for future QB in the coming draft since fins will suck any way.what say you?

I don't know. we have to ask the new gm MAXMERC if he would trade both chads for dan marino because marino is the greatest qb in history to play for the dolphins. How can ireland be such a freaking jerk not to bring in marino.

who's dan marino? did he won any thing like tom brady? or this the dolphins standard .

Maybe Bring back vern den hearder and maybe dig up david woodlys coarpse to be the 3rd stringer, what do you think max?

RED SOS RULE.....METS SUCK

Q for the menace ,,,,,can you please tell the fans like me why you thing dan marino was over rated?

How can ireland be such a freaking jerk not to think of digging up woodley's corpse to play qb. I 'm so much smarter than ireland. What a freaking jerk.

NJPhinfanI have to admit, I am a long time Yankee fan. My friend cannot understand how I can be Dolphin fan and Yankee fan at the same time. Anyway, good luck with your Mets this year it should be fun.

The Cuban Assassin,

just so u understand, i wasn't calling u ignorant just saying that humans in general tend to show they're ignorance when they get mad, i should've re-worded that last post better

i would love JT back, like sparano said “you can never have enough pass rushers” and JT is a good pass rusher as we all know

Hi, Gang.

This is the REAL Nathaniel Dodsworth writing from his original hometown of Toronto, Ontario. I submitted a previous entry, which Armando apparently decided to delete. It explained that the lengthy Bill Parcells post in Armando's previous article was written by a faux Nathaniel Dodsworth. In retrospect, I don't blame Armando for deleting my explanatory entry, as it contained references to various bodily functions.

IN NATHANIEL WE DON'T TRUST CAUSE HE'S MEAN AND DOESN'T LIKE PAN CAKE.GO FINS ,IN TUNA WE TRUST AND PLEASE BRING BACK OU BELOVED JASON WILL NOT BE DENIED THE SUPER BOWL RING NEX YEAR UNDER THE HIS LEADER AND PLEASE BRING ZACK BAKE TO HEPL JASON IN HIS DIET AND PREPARE GOOD OMEGA 3 FOOD FOR HIM BEFOR GAMES LIKE SALMON,TUNA AND FETTA CHEESE.GO FINS

Dolphins Mock Draft Board

1.( #25 overall) Hakeem Nicks - I would like to see Ray Maeuluga fall to this position and he would be my first choice, but I don't see him getting past the Patriots at #23. Nicks is my first choice.

Alternates for this pick: 1. Vontae Davis- If true the positive test for marijuana at the combine would sway me away from Davis.

2. Clay Matthews- If true the positive test for steroids would move me off this pick.

3. Sean Smith- I like his size to match up with bigger WR's and don't know if he will still be available at #42.

4. Percy Harvin- If true the positive test for marijuana would me off this pick.(why are all my players suspected of drugs?)

5. Larry English- Nice showing at the Senior Bowl, good production in college, looks a little mechanical.

2(#42 overall ) Conner Barwin- Multi talanted player in the Parcells mode, worked out well for Miami.

Alternates for this pick: 1. Brian Robiskie- Good route runner and nice size makes for a nice possesion reciever.

2. Kenny Britt- Not as polished as Robiskie but shows more speed, could be a steal here.

3. Duke Robinson- G is not the biggest need but if Robinson was still here it would be too tempting not to pair him with Jake Long on the left side and complete he line into on of the best in football.

4. Victor "Macho" Harris- showed better speed at his pro day. Has a knack for making plays. Can also return kicks and punts.

5. Alphonso Smith- Undersized but has the intelligence and man skills to be a nice cb.

2( #57 overall) Ron Brace- would be the space-eating NT in the Vince Willfork mode that Miami desparately needs. A starter from day #1 rotating with Jason Ferguson.

Alternates for this pick 1. Pat White- At this point White presents value to the team. Miami is actively shopping John Beck for virtually anything. Pat White could serve as the #3 quarterback all while saving a roster spot and be used at WR and 10-15 plays a game in the "Wildcat".

2. Cody Brown- Im not as high on Brown as some, but Miami appears to be.

3. DJ. Moore- lacks top end speed and size but presents value in this spot and the kid can play.

4. James Laurenitis- Not real high on him and another team will almost certainly draft him before this spot. If he is here I can live with the pick.

5.Shonn Green- RB is not a need but Ricky is 32 years old and one toke away from a suspension. Green or Mcoy would be value at this spot for the team in the RB rotation.

Dolphins Mock Draft Board

In an alternate with Laurenitis who will not be there at the #57 spot I would substitute WR Derrick Williams- Up and down production at Penn State but showed to sub 4.4 40 times at his pro-day and has nice size at 6-0.

fsudolphins13 . I addressed nj phin fan and nj phin fan alone in my post. If i had made a post without mentioning anybody then you can respond . So next time mind your own F'n business. RAYS SUK !

how chud dey say no to vick hed be the ultimene player out of the wildcat.....anywas i do hope they get taylor they chud replace him with matt roth who is also a converted DE to OLB i think taylor is alot better then matt roth......anywas vick is going to play for the new football league forgot name but he will play in orlando ----------- what ever happend to marcus vick i remenber him being on the phins roster in 2006 or at lest when they first got daunte culpepper. i think that marcus whould also be a good player to use in the wildcat offence because of the fact he was a qb in collage and the face of his last name(speed)
