The dynamics of the White-Henne competition

I cannot begin to tell you how many e-mails have flooded my Outlook box since the draft, wondering about the dynamics of the looming Chad Henne vs. Pat White competition.

Can I give you one man's opinion?

Don't get too worried about this competition deal. Having witnessed only four rookie minicamp practices I can tell you Pat White has a loooong way to go before he can compete with Henne. And, by the way, Henne has a loooong way to go before he can be considered an NFL starting quarterback.

Thank God for Chad Pennington!

Pennington should be the starter at the beginning of the 2009 season, assuming he is healthy. Where things go beyond that will be determined by Miami's record (are the Dolphins contending in 2009 or so far out of the picture they need to look to 2010?), how well Pennington is playing, and how fast Henne and White are progressing.

But let us forget 2009 for the moment. It is an unquestionable fact the Dolphins are expecting a quarterback transition prior to the 2010 season. It will be either Henne or White if Bill Parcells' plan is followed. I still believe it will be Henne.

Why? He has the superior arm. He has the superior pocket presence. He is not as mobile as White, but neither is he immobile. And I have never seen him overmatched by any situation or circumstance during his 12 months in Miami.

White? You have to understand I've only seen four practices so this will be a fluid and too-early call on a rookie. But unless he has an arm transplant, it isn't likely to get a whole lot stronger. And unless he's about to get a leg extension, he isn't likely to get a whole lot taller.

His arm is good enough, but not great. He sailed quite a few passes during the practices this weekend. His mid-range and short-range throws are excellent. His ability to read and recognize was decent, considering he learned the play only hours before running them. But his deep outs and 9-routes (deep up the sideline) throws were unimpressive to me. They get there, but not with the velocity of a Henne pass.

That does not guarantee White cannot become a better quarterback than Henne and a fine quarterback overall. Arm strength is only part of the equation for an NFL quarterback. But off the blocks, White is behind on both his size (which is important to staying healthy and seeing over the blockers and rushers) and arm strength.

If you are wondering why I haven't mentioned Henne's one-year advantage over White in experience, it's because in 2010 that might not be a factor. White, you see, will see more game action this season than Henne if Pennington continues playing well. Absent a change at the starting job, Henne will sit while Pennington starts. And White will play more than Henne as he contributes to the WildPat spread option package.

Many of you were thrown off by general manager Jeff Ireland's point that White will be exclusively a quarterback at first and would compete with Henne in the future. What about that is troubling? This is what he must say. This is how it must be.

Can you imagine picking a guy in the second round and setting the ceiling at playing only in the WildPat package? The last time that happened was when Cam Cameron announced Ted Ginn Jr., the ninth overall pick, was going to be a special teams guy. It's a disastrous approach.

So Ireland set the bar high for White and, in so doing, gave the rookie something great to shoot for while also sending a message to Henne. The message: You've not won the 2010 starting job yet so don't get all comfortable and cocky.

The Dolphins win all around with their current situation. Henne is motivated. White is motivated. And the team has a great competition in the offing.

If Henne wins the competion, which I predict he will, the Dolphins have a promising young QB as the starter and a backup quarterback, who also has promise but will not be simply holding the clipboard waiting for an opportunity. The backup will be contributing (hopefully) in the WildPat spread option package the Dolphins hope to eventually unleash.

If White wins the competition, the Dolphins have a mobile quarterback with a good enough arm that is obviously so intelligent and sound that he beat out a more experienced player. And the Dolphins still have waiting in the wings a hungry Henne who will be doing all in his power to reclaim something he will see as being rightfully his.

We have a term for this in my country. Win. Win.

By the way, to answer some reader questions, yes, the 2010 Dolphins probably would want a veteran quarterback added to fill out the QB corps. That experienced QB could be Pennington if he's willing to accept a diminished role. Or it could be some other player if Pennington finds an opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere. Pennington is currently unsigned for 2010.

who has a stronger arm ?henne or white and who has more flex thighs and hips ?

MR bunglito, who's your best QB ,henne or penne or white?

Armando:

Excellent article. I think you nailed this on the head. Henne is the future at QB and White will be the pivot man in the wildcat. There is no great surprise to this and I think every one has been making a mountain out of a mole hill over Ireland's comments. I believe that both Henne and White will be key contributors for the Fins in the future and it should be fun to watch them both.

Yes analysis Mando. I think if both QBs progress as expected, it could make the team secure at the most important position. This can only on for so long though. If White continues to do well and progress, some team will make a huge contract offer down the line to make him their unquestioned starter but that's ok since college football has many players who have a similar skill set to White. For example, Hines Ward, Antwan Randle El, Brad Smith, Josh Cribbs, Kordell Stewart, etc.

You forgot us with that #9 pick.

Ok, here's another situation everyone seems to be completely discounting: Pennington leads the Fins to a second consecutive AFC East crown and wins a playoff game or two. Under this situation, do you really think the Fins would turn over the reigns to an untested 2nd year QB? I just do not get all this "Pennington is our QB this year but after that it'll be one of the rookies" talk. I mean, why do this to Pennington? His contract is up after this year, so why not just keep the organizational mouth shut, see how he does, and then make a decision. We don't have to cut his leg's out from under him before the season and tell him that he is a lame duck. Heck, you're telling me that if he wins an MVP, we aren't going to resign him? Of course we will. The only difference is that Pennington will have a chip on his shoulder going into negotiations. The better tact is to make the best QB our starting QB, period. If it's Pennington, I say we resign him.

Pat White going to the no 1 QB of team, he has all the tools needed and more from his mighty strong arm to very smart QB mind and henne will fight for the spot number 2 o 3 .

We all know that pennington has all the experiance ,game management and so on but in your opp,who has the stronger arm white or pennington, the only reason I ask is becouse Whites arm must be better or why let him run the wild cat. From a running back stand point Ronnie was great .

mr culito, you showed some promis but still, you poem can be better.fo now i grade you at 4 out of ten , try again a poem about henne and his shaky future .

wild pat, I had some typo's on the first one. I hope you like my next poem passed on Pat Solai's draft day experience.

I'm with Smokey, not only is it premature to declare Henne or White a victor in their race, it would be premature -- and dumb -- to cast off Pennington for 2010, especially if he produces another fine season in 2009.
This zeal to have a team of young guys is great, but it can go too far. Nothing wrong with excellent veterans as part of the mix.

The Dolphins will have Pennington as QB for 2009 with Henne as back up. White will be on the game roster and dress every game as a WR. That way Sparano & the Dolphins have all options available.

Mando, I have a question that has been driving me nuts!

Do you think, right now at this moment in time, that Henne has the make of a GREAT NFL QB? I mean, if White has even a shot at dethroning Henne for the 2010 starting job, then Henne obviously isn't THAT good. Do you think that Henne is the next Favre, Brady, or Manning(great QB's). Or do you think he's the next Palmer, Frerotte, or Travaris Jackson(mediocre QB's).

zack, the fin fans are the best in dreaming, you asked if henne will be a great QB,the answer ,no one know until he's in 8 games as a starter then you will have the answer but for him to have 11 wins in a season like penne ,it only can happen in his DREAMES.

Bunglito, I am glad you like them. Maybe Mando can open a blog topic for fins poems.

I need some suggestions for next versus. Any topics in mind?

how about a poem comparing 2 giants. Gort and jake long ?

OH NO,
they deleted my Henne Poem...
did anybody read it?

Many Me, you are not Jed. Stop it. You also are not MJZ. Don't you have enough identities already?

3 good points about CULITO last poem about HENNE'S future;

1-he brought all 4 qQB in the poem with clarity and wit.
2-he made us feel their feeling of their roles and fears.
3-he used quotes like"the ball jumps outta my hand" from the coach t.s.
4-mr culito felt henne's misery, beck's fall, penne's assurance of himself and white big question mark over his big size head.

Armando,
Which Poem did you like the best: Bess, Solai or the QB situation poem?

lmao@many me by armando's post.

Jed. If you're out there. read armando's post regarding many me and you. You owe me an apology.

henne will be a great qb for miami. look what he did at michigan in a pro style offense. pennington is awesome but this qb competition everyone is hyping reminds me of fiedlers situation miami had years ago constantly looking over his shoulder after one bad play. there were times pennington tried to do 2 much last year knowing full well the starting job was his and his alone. the added clamoring 4 a possible qb change will only make him press more.

NJ phin, why jed owe you an apology, you the one who owe the cuban menace an apology thinking he was jed .

Pat White the midget pygmie won't be in the mix in 2010. This guy is a wasted pick, this is a waste of time when we are rebuilding. The wildkitten will get stuffed. It will be a race between the Midget and Teddy Ginn backwards to our own goal line with the Ravens chasing them.

Nj owes the menace jack ! By the way where's the poem regarding you , jake long and giants ?

bunglito, you very clear is NJ PHIN FAN .

Manddo,
that was definitely informative. White, yes will see more action then Henne in the 2009 season due mainly because of the WILDCAT!!!!!!! BUT! BUT! There is no way White can beat out Henne for the starting job. Henne's got the life arm. White's arm isnt that great. If anything White could become the Michael Vick of the Miami Dolphins! They want a QB that can throw the ball and can get away from the blitz. But they need someone who can chuck it downfield while on the run and that's Henne. White will make a good WILDCAT package operator, but i cant see him beating out Henne. oh and by the way...it's the WIIILDCAT offense package, not the WILDPAT. Calling it the wildpat is bout as dumb as having a screen door on a submarine.

Mando,
The White/Henne competition brings up an intersting organizational dynamic that perhaps is being overlooked. Drafting several players at the same position in the same draft or succeeding years forces competition, comraderie, strong unit play, and just seems to energize that position. Think - Zonk!/Kiick (Morris following yr) Webb/Simms, Duper/Clayton ( 1 yr apart), Madison /Surtain ( 1 yr apart), and proba a ton more around the leaugue like Swann/Stallworth , Rice /Taylor ....

When you are the only guy drafted at your position as a high pick (Ginn for example) I think there is too much job security and its a me vs them attitude. I love that we got a couple corners and a bunch or receivers...let em fight it out and grow together - conflict breeds success.

If you have holes to fill in several areas as Miami does, it may not be coincidence that the picks broke the way they did as much as a deliberate strategy by Parcells & Ireland. If so, then hats off to these guys for doing something really smart that nobody is talking about, but you can bet is weighing heavily on the minds of the guys in this Dolphins draft class, and that is "How do I outplay my counterpart?" Truth is, its exactly as you said - win, win - especially if both players make the team and unseat an unproductive vet in the process. Its too early for anyone but the great Mel Kiper (cough ... dick) to grade the actual content of the Dolphins draft, but the way they went about it was interesting and perhaps brilliant - we'll see.

Sirs (Misters Culito, Soiled Bottom and MeLuvULongTime2009),
You are all under arrest - but first have a seat. I'd like to talk to you on camera if you don't mind.

Hey fake Gary Stevens -- thanks for posting first for me! You really made my day. It's a first for Armando's Blog -- a welcome imposter.

How do we know who to shoot? I think the "Real Gary Stevens" is actually the "Other Gary Stevens"

I for one, am confused by all of these Gary Stevens.

I think management picked a great athlete in Pat White. Something to throw at Mr Bumstead in New England. Just the wrinkle to win a couple of ball games with a surprise. While the picks seemed very weird to me at first, when you think about everything
Two real fast guys receivers, a couple of middle of the field receivers, two good tight ends, a big fast guy to catch the ball, good developing corners, a very good and very experienced qb with a real good backup that has an arm, good to great lines on both sides of the ball, above average backs, good pass rushing, decent kicking and a great coach. Do I smell repeat AFC East Champs and a final four finish? Yep

you welcome ,real gary stevens, i wrote i love you all without space between the words to save time in writing.

Fellas that is good, but you are overlooking one simple fact.
Three conformational polymorphs of N-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-bromothiobenzamide, yellow , orange , and yellow , have been identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The properties and structure of the polymorphs were examined with FT Raman, FTIR (ATR), and UV/Vis spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry. Computational data on rotational barriers in the isolated gas-phase molecule indicate that the molecular conformation found in the form is energetically preferred, but only by around 2 kJ mol-1 over the conformation. The planar molecular structure found in the form is destabilized by 10-14 kJ mol-1, depending on the calculation method. However, experimental evidence suggests that the polymorph is the most stable crystalline phase at room temperature. This is attributed to the relative planarity of this structure, which allows more and stronger intermolecular interactions, that is, more energetically effective packing. Calculated electronic-absorption maxima were in agreement with experimental spectra.

Cletus, we love you still

It seems to me that the best scenario, post Pennington, would be to have Henne as the number one and White as the number two. This way Henne runs the regular offense while White comes in to run the Wildcat offense. A two headed monster. Not quite to the extent of the rotation that the "Old Ball Coach" once employed, but more of a 1A and 1B.
