The Sunday Dolphins column, well, sort of

There's no doubt Ernest Wilford was the biggest and most expensive mistake by the Dolphins personnel department a year ago. Even as the entire team was turning things around, even as the personnel people were basking in the glow of successfully remaking the roster, Wilford was a disappointing revelation at receiver.

Even on a team with plenty of open jobs at said receiver spot, Wilford was not only unable to crack the lineup, he couldn't get active on nine of 16 game days.

But with the new season comes new hopes that last year was last year and this year will bring new results. So today's Florida Sports Buzz column asks the question, can Wilford make the team in his jack-of-all-trades role as a receiver and H-back?

Today's Dolphins In Depth gives you the answer: Yes, but Wilford is going to need Providential intervention to help that happen.

What does that mean?

It means that all things being equal, all players currently on the roster being healthy, Wilford is going to find himself on the outside looking in when roster decisions are made. With everyone healthy, Wilford won't make the team as a tight end and definitely won't make it as a receiver. And he's not all that good at special teams, so his fate will be sealed.

He'll be offered in trade or simply released if no other team bites.

But, of course, it's not that simple.

The fact is injuries and other variables do factor. The fact is David Martin's status could affect Wilford. If Martin is unable to return from his sports hernia, then Wilford's chances increase. If rookie John Nalbone continues to drop passes in training camp as he did in offseason camps, then Wilford's chances increase.

If Brian Hartline and Patrick Turner -- Miami's two rookie receiver additions -- fail in training camp, then Wilford's chances increase.

Do you know the odds of those things actually happening? Not great. Martin is expected to recover from his surgery to repair the hernia. That would give the Dolphins three more-experienced players at the tight end position -- Martin, Anthony Fasano and Joey Haynos. Add to that a rookie (Nalbone) the Dolphins have high hopes for at the position and one sees the numbers are against Wilford at TE.

Here's another factor against him making it as a tight end: Miami TEs are expected to be good blockers ... and Wilford has never really been a distinguished blocker at receiver. So now he's going to block linebackers better than he's blocked cornerbacks? Hard to believe.

The use of Wilford as a "jack-of-all-trades" also hurts Wilford at receiver. You see, the guy who seemed slow off the scrimmage line and unable to separate from coverage last year has added 15 pounds to his frame. So with the addition of Turner and Hartline and the expected improvement of the younger veterans, how is a heavier, less explosive Wilford supposed to pass the guys playing exclusively at receiver?

Think about that question. The logical answer seems grim.

The only way it could happen is if Miami suffers a plague of injuries at receiver. The only way, in fact, Wilford makes the team is if guys get hurt and the two rookies are simply not ready to perform.

So the use of Ernest Wilford as an H-back and receiver is interesting. But does it mean he's more likely to make the Dolphins when roster decisions are made?

You tell me.

No.

I thought the same thing while reading Barry Jackson's story. He makes it seem like Wilford has a chance. He has practically no chance to make the team barring injuries.

Thanks for the perspective Mando. You back from vacation already?

idk about anybody else but im most excited about the safety combo and packages we can run. with bell and wilson it could be the best combo in the nfl. theres solid backups. and the corners are going to be above average but as far as the backups go there will be no severe drop off in talent. dont forget alot depends on the rush we generate cause idc who you have back there with no rush a high school quarter back will pick u apart. but i honestly think the only hole on this team will be defensive tackle and possibly guard if Donald thomas doesnt get better

Mando what about your beef with former dolphin great Joe Rose? Word on the street is the big dawg got in your face and you ran like a little girl!!!

Mando - thanks as always. Not to beat a dead horse , but a back ups at te , wr and h-back have to play special teams and be good at it. Not good for Ernest.

The one bright spot I see in Wilford's versatility is the weeks where the coaches are having trouble deciding to dress an additional WR or an additional TE. They could dress Wilford and have an additional option for both essentially. In some cases that may allow them to dress an additional defensive player they may want to have for match ups on the defensive side of the ball. The problem, like you pointed out, is his inability to contribute on special teams. Aside from injuries, I think his best chance to make the team is improving his play on special teams. That being said the young talent the Dolphins have brought in at WR and TE is going to make it awful tough for him to make the team.

Another possibility, is putting Camarillo on the PUP list, Hartline on the practice squad with Nalbone and you could have Wilford for a WR slot until week 6 when he could be traded or cut to make room for Camarillo. This would give Miami some more time to shop him with some playing time, give Camareo more time to heal and a shorter season on his knee and they could play around with a four man TE package in Fasano, Martin, Haynos and Wilford. That could be interesting down in the red zone.

Wilford is one of those horses that are 50-1 quantified. In other words some of the other’s in the race will have to fall down on the Track for Wilford to win a starting or active role. I don’t see the Dolphins keeping over 5-6 receivers the reason I use 5 (which is extremely low) Pat White, and Pat Cobb are game changers at receiver, Cobb is a proven Commodity with 19 catches for 275 yds and a 14.5 average. Ginn, Bess, Camarillo, Armstrong, London, Turner, Hartline, and Wilford: no scribe covering the Fins has indicated the Depth chart is very different than listed above at WR, maybe Turner ahead of London in the 5th spot or Wilford ahead of Hartline in the 7th spot. The competition at LB, DB, and DE may cause the Dolphins to cut the WR active to 5, allowing an extra defensive player that will actually get on the field and log plays on situational downs. Sparano has said, “We’ll typically carry 6 WR”. Miami probably has the best receivers out the backfield in Brown, Williams, and Cobb in the NFL or top 5 anyway in 2008 the trio had 81 catches for over 700yds. In a way it’s a good problem too many good players too much competition we’ll cut players that will start somewhere else. SteFin

Nice lipstick in your picture, Armando. Hahahaha

Umm we had Wilson at the Giants eariler, and he was okayyyyyyyyy... Don't think that he a pro bowler, yet... He is and will always be average player.

no. (answer to last question).

No twitter for me. Too many jackbutts out there destroying the tech. Viruses, hackers and jerks jumping on the bandwagon. If you don't have it here, I don't participate.

As to the important question of the day, I think Wilford may fit in. It only takes a couple of injuries and he is in. A tight end, a receiver and he gets a couple of chances.
My feeling is that he has to perform. If he is slow off the line, then use him in situations where quickness off the line is not important.

Dear Mr. Salguero

"The only way, in fact, Wilford makes the team is if guys get hurt"

Is there any trueth to the rumor that Wilford has been getting career advise from Tanya Harding and was introduced to Jeff Galooly ?

Just wondering

Some random observations:

1) My 3 favorite Cesars:
a) Cesar Cedeno
b) Cesar Geronimo
c) Cesar Romero (The Joker on "Batman")

2) The problem with the American foreign policy establishment is that it's decidedly left wing. When conservative Republican administrations take over, they constantly have to battle the hostility from their own State Department.

3) I've never pleasured myself to Beyonce Knowles. I've thought about it, but haven't been able to work it into my busy schedule.

4) While a cinema buff, and a devotee of the old classics, I have to admit I've never watched an entire Bette Davis picture from beginning to end. She leaves me cold.

5) What happened to the days when you could say politically incorrect things, and if people knew what was in your heart, they let you get away with it. For instance, Don Rickles (who everyone knows to be a decent, loving, generous guy despite his persona) once remarked at a roast for Sammy Davis, Jr.: "We need the Blacks! Why? Because no Jew is gonna make up a train!" Hilarious! But you couldn't make that joke today.

6) My choice of soft drinks as I get older is either Mountain Dew or Sprite. They have subtlety. Coca Cola is too... too... it's too much. You know what I mean.

7) I miss King Kong Bundy wrestling. The man was so confident in his own abilities that he insisted on the referee counting to FIVE before being granted a winning pinfall. If only the neo-Socialist Obama administration preached the same can-do ethic!

8) I've figured out why I like Sarah Palin so much. Let's say i was married to her. There's an intruder in the house. While I'm cowering under the bed, Sarah pulls out her hunting rifle and shoots him between the eyes. I emerge from under the bed, and Sarah tells me how brave *I* was! Then she cooks me a delicious meal (which she hunted herself). And later that evening, she seduces me into a glorious night of love making. THAT'S THE KIND OF WOMAN SARAH PALIN IS! (Or pretty close to it.) GOD, I HOPE SHE BECOMES PRESIDENT!

I think there fore I am.

ARMANDO:

You and your faithful fail to realize what this team is tring to do.Not only are they sureing up the main spots on the team and the back-ups but what about the versatile players. ROTH can play two spots. TAYLOR can play two spots.WHITE can play two spots or more. Many O and D-Line men can play multiple spots. His chances are higer for that. Less money for more work.In his case he can either get better or get out. And before they get rid of him they will choose not to say they messed up but use him in some type of way.Like I said before sometimes it's not that player but the teams scheme. I'm not sure like ALL OF you one way or an other, but he has to produce and this might be his best chance to do so. If he can manage to get better at blocking than he can be used as a seam stretcher.Where he can be dynamite. Let's see and wait to see if he can adapt to his new role. ike many other DOLPHINS players they are just startining to get their feet under them.

THE DOLPHINS ARE SUPERBOWL BOUND

in times like these only the best like the cuban menace and afc east survive and the the donkeys eat cabbage

nathaniel the man , sara palin has the same hair cut that clinton loves with some hair comes down on the forehead .

The only thing that would make Sarah Palin more attractive would be a pair of knee pads.
Speaking of which, I have to go get mine. Tom Bunchen and I have a date tonite.

Mr Menace/dog. Palin isn't a socialist and has more balls than obama. also the donkey is the Democrats symbol. So i guess they are full of cabbage ? . Did you vote for obama?

Dear Mr Armado, thank you for writing about the MIAMI DOLPHINS. They are gratest of footballs. Hey Mr Armado do you want to know what I think? DO you? I bet you Wiford get s to be traded away from MIAMI DOLPHINS. I bet you, too. Do you bet two? He not to be H-Back and not to be WR and not to be TE. so he will be traded to team that which will want to. Gaints will want Wiford. They will may want to trade for him.
Thank you Mr Armado. I hope you gave your wife pinch to grow inch for her brithday. Did you?
Sincerely,
Juan Huron

sam, did you ever had love three way while you were a sleep ?

"There's no doubt Ernest Wilford was the biggest and most expensive mistake by the Dolphins personnel department a year ago."

Armando, an accurate and truthful statement would be to say that Wilford was the ONLY mistake made by the Dolphins personnel department a year ago. Unless I'm missing something, I am not aware of any trade or draft selection that has not worked out, and most have worked out big time.

Of course, you could point to Shawn Murphy, but the story on him is not finished. Or the two RB's they selected last year, but hey, they were low round flyer picks. And i think one of them is still around.

I know your job is to cast a critical eye on management, to be a watchdog of sorts. OK. But come on, tell it like it is. Wilford is the ONLY mistake these guys have made. No one bats 1000, and these guys are batting 950.

I'm surprised to see potical comments on a sports blog. So...

Palin and Obama have just about the same amount of experience but i take Palin for one reason, her policies. It's pretty simple, either you want a gov't to do "lots of stuff" or you want one to lower taxes and get the hell out of the way.

A President is Commander in Chief for a good reason, the only area the Pres should be active in is the miliary. And when there is no conflict going on, a Pres can be asleep at the wheel, as Clinton was his last three years dealing with the Lewinsky stuff.

Either you want a social democracy (nanny state) like European countries, or you want a free market system, with proper regulation of course. Either you want more freedom, or less freedom. Take your pick.

Amen. MJZ

Juan Huron. Oh my lord. Are you related to the afc east champs ?

MJZ:

Josh McCown. Paid him $6 million expecting him to be the starter. He wasn't good enough and was traded even as the cap hit remained with Miami.

Michael Lehan: Resigned him expecting him to be the starter. He was injured and then cut.

Keith Davis: Signed him to be the special teams' star as he was in Dallas. He was cut and returned to Dallas to be a special teams star and part time starter.

Chris Crocker: Acquired to be a potential starter. He failed at being that in Miami before becoming that in Cincy.

They put Jalen Parmalee on the practice squad for one week, expecting him to last long enough to re-sign him to regular roster. He was signed by another team off the practice squad.

Signed Steve McKinney even while he was injured, expecting him to compete for a swing G-C job. He never got healthy and was terminated.

They cut Justin Peelle, who was a pretty good player previously for Miami and continued to be a good player in Atlanta.

I'm not saying these were terrible decisions, but no one -- except for you -- is naive enough to think the Dolphins made zero personnel missteps last year.

I was going to mention J.McCown

AFC EAST champs:

Matt Roth cannot play two positions. He is an OLB. He would get run over as a 3-4 DE. Taylor is also an OLB. And Pat White has to learn to play one position, QB, before anyone can say he's going to play two.

Finally, the only players that played mutliple position on the OL last year were players that weren't good enough to lock down one spot. Tony Sparano wants five guys playing the same position every single down, not switching back and forth.

I've been away a long time, guys, but I didn't think you all had lost all grasp of truth.

Armando - with all due respect...I'm not going to follow you on Twitter. This is where I found you and this is where I will continue to follow the valuable information you provide. Just my opinion. I would appreciate it if whatever you have to say on Twitter you also post here. Thanks for your hard work.

I agree. Twitter is just gay. I hope this fad fades quickly.

Wilford will be gone. I thought it was a strange move when they signed him. They obviously signed him purely for his size and not his football skills. He was never that good with Jacksonville.

With logjams at tight-end and WR, the only way he makes the team is if they need to keep him on for cap reasons. Despite this bust, Ireland & Co are still doing a great job with personel.

you feel lucky punk? WELL do you? Mcnair. r.i.p. always thought you were slick dog. but then why you f'n wit 20 year old crazy white hoe's?

The menace has arrived, shoot a Q to the cuban..

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

While AMERICA is flooded with drugs there are not many black men going across the border to bring it in.

White women are getting bigger asses so they can attract MINORITIES.

What is the first thing a black man gets when he gets his contract. A white girl. They love security.

PURTO RICAN WOMEN ARE THE BIGGEST FREAKS.

We have the best man on the job to clean up this mess AMERICA's in.

GOTTA go to work

Geez ArmChairDoh,

That's some pretty intense criticism of Wilford don't you think? You the same guy that gives GINN a break year after year after year?

why don't you answer the Q

"So sign up to follow me at twitter.com/armandosalguero"

No and you can't make me.

armchairduh, Bingo on that post, they keep giving ted(oops i dropped another one)ginn a free pass every year and his family, please cut the entire ginn family...Mzj, i'am neither i'am an anarchist... hope this answers your question, now whats the next Q for thje cuban???

WE WILL WIN THE SUPER BOWL ONLY WITH TED GINN THE BEST WR EVER.

Champs, put down the pipe or put down that shot glass, its to early in the morning....

Welcomes back big mando. We's been waiting for you to resumes yours butt-kicking of us'n. We's eagerly awaiting the next time you talk to ones of yous sources and breaks stories on us that we's haves no clue about.

Oh, and yeah mob, we's believes Jason Allen will be the starting CB opposite Will Allen. We's wrotes it many times this offseason. Being someone that never played the game but acts like he did, Omar has decided JAllen, as he calls him, has the tools to be a star.

Nevermind that mando has reported the problems with JAllen numerous times and the coaches are using him as a third teamer. Facts, shmacts.

Also, the trifecta still be negotiatin' with Vernon Golhston. Guaranteed. We got that exclusive ghetto-style.

Douches!

Hey Mando - is that you posting as "Omar Kooky and Harvey Fialwhatever"?

I laugh every time I see those posts - whoever is doing it - job well done!!!!!

Just because you have a DUI and a girlfreind. It doesn't not mean you deserve to be shot in the head twice. And why don't they check her fingers for gun powder residue so that we can know if she was the shooter? Anyway, we cannot fault the trifecta for the Wilford signing, because they had no idea on how good or bad the WR core would be.

We's been accused of being Mando in previous posts. We's can assure the mob we's ain't Mando. We's act like we's played the game (even if we didn't). Mando never played the game.

Plus he's got hisself sources. We's got ... We's got our grammar to falls back on.

Douches.

The Fins are giving him every chance to make the team before he's cut.

The cliche response: It's up to him...

Reality: it's not up to him...its up to the GM & Coach...and it's not looking good.

most people on this blog have no thing of value to say.the only one i follow is menace

why isn't afc east champs racial post at 6:13 am not deleted but you delete posts that fire back at him. This is bullshyt !

ace east champs. Work ? cleaning septic tanks or sewers ?

sad , this guy still talking to himself.

afc East champs. Purto rican ? sureing up ? startining ? Can you say ebonics. You work ? Yeah cleaning septic tanks and sewers.

Rasheeeeeeeeeed Wallace baby ! Garnett coming back . Championship #18 coming up.

Wilford is terrible and has terrible stone hands as well. How on earth do you make it to the NFL as a receiver and you can barely catch a football?!

Dear Mr. Aloco

"most people on this blog have no thing of value to say."

Dont look at it as lowering your standards but as broadening your horizons.

I get good Dolphin info from many posters here.
