The Dolphins made an incredibly smart move just moments ago in acquiring a new No. 2 QB and that move could make Pat White obsolete.
The team has traded an undisclosed draft pick to Kansas City for backup quarterback Tyler Thigpen, the Chiefs announced today.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, will announce in a couple of weeks that the regular-season has begun. (Actually, the Dolphins have since also announced the move.) They chuckled when I told them what I wrote.
The trade makes sense for several reasons:
1. The Dolphins have now placed injured Chad Pennington (shoulder) on the injured reserve list. So they need a backup to Chad Henne. Remember, Henne is the starter.
2. Rookie second-round pick Pat White is not ready to be a backup QB in the NFL.
3. Thigpen has experience, having started 11 games last season and thrown 18 TDs and 12 Ints for the Chiefs.
4. The Chiefs have Matt Cassel as their starter and Brodie Croyle is their backup so Thigpen was available.
4. The Miami-KC connection is at work again. Bill Parcells and son-in-law Scott Pioli have already made two other trades since the offseason began.
Thigpen is making $460,000 this season so the Dolphins pick up the prorated portion of his salary for the remainder of this season. Thigpen is also signed for 2010 at a scheduled $550,000 in base salary.
The irony of this trade is that it might make White obsolete. You see, the reason the Dolphins want to run the spread formation this year and, in part, picked White to do that, is because Thigpen carved them up running the spread formation last season.
Guess what?
Thigpen is better at running the spread than White has shown to be. Thigpen can run. He can even catch passes. Just check out the video below.
What I'm telling you is once he learns the offense, expect him to compete with White to be the spread package QB. And given his experience and, frankly, better arm, expect Thigpen not White to be the guy running the spread if it continues.

He droped a lot of pass in preseason and was a little lost but he hasn't been three years like Ginn he needs to be looked at and trained more and played more dude at least can start by blocking good during runing plays he had size

I'm sorry to see Penny's career possibly end this way. He was a great STOP GAP for us, a class act.
However, I've been ranting and raving for Henne to be the starter since he was drafted. Other than our record, I couldn't be happier.
All the haters and nay sayers have to realize Henne's never been given a PROPER chance in a game thats mattered. You can try to make an argument for the Chargers game, but you'll have to argue with yourself.
Let's let the guy START a couple of games and establish a little continuity and rhythm.
PS: The Thigpen deal was a steal!

WR Bust - Charles Rogers #2 overall pick.
4 years, mostly injured, 36 catches, 440 yds, 4 TD's.
Roger's career numbers are almost identical to Ginn's rookie season in catches and yards, but Ginn only had 2 TD's. And Ginn played for a 1-15 team in his rookie season.

Don't understand why a lot of you people are excited over Thigpen, he's been with a couple teams and they let him go. One's teams trash is another team's treasure I guess or else you're reaching for some hope?
I would be more excited if we delegated Channing Crowder to cleaning toilets at the stadium.
Henne deserves the a few games to prove himself. He's had more reps than many of the qbs that are doing well in the NFL as we speak.
Get ready for the blitz cuz it will be coming!

Ted Ginn, 35 games, 103 receptions, 1344 yards...I'm not defending Ted Ginn, he has dropped mote then his fair share of balls in his hands..he is not fighting for those yards after catch..but the kid also was sort of limited to Chad Pennington's range...hopefully Ginn will be able to use that speed now with Henne..point is Ginn us certainly no bust, I don't believe he is built to be a number one receiver on this team, but when the Dolphins do get a true number one type, I believe Ginn really could shine without all the pressure of being the number one

Point taken. Ginn is not a #-1 receiver. We kind of all know that by now. I honestly don't think Henne will be his savior. The kid is nothing more than a possession receiver. Catch it, hit the ground or get out of bounds. His blocking is atrocious. His pass catching is adequate at best. He's giving me memories of Hagan. He'll never be the touchdown magnet this team needs though.

He cost the Fins a conditional pick. The Chiefs owe the Fins a 7th.rd pick and a conditional pick right now. Seems like he came free of charge. Makes it an easy trade, if you want to call it that. They owe the Fins right now.

If that's the case then it was a ok call for a backup QB with experience but he doesn't make the team any better come gameday and a better caliber QB to challenge Henne would of been a better deal but if Henne pans out it's all water under the bridge then
Posted by: KillerDolphins | September 29, 2009 at 09:23 PM
They should change Pat White's number from 6 to 16 andlist him as a receiver so he can come in and out of the game with out affecting the availability of the other QB's.

Good points. But if Henne were to get hurt, and Thigpen evolved as a savior, it would make this free trade, a blockbuter.

I suspect Parcell's envisions Henne and Thigpen as the second coming of Simms and Hostetler.

If the resolution is that simple, I agree. I don't know the rule on that though. It confuses me how Ronnie Brown can play quarterback, but the 3rd. quarterback isn't allowed until the last quarter unless both quarterbacks are hurt or it is agreed they can not return to the game.
Posted by: perspective | September 29, 2009 at 09:40 PM

Remember Brett Favre? He was trade a year after he was drafted. He turned out ok. did you see the touchdown that old man threw on Sundat in the final seconds? Anything is possible.

how the browns gave up sanchez to the jets is a mystery .

"The reason they run the spread is because of Thigpen." Mando, you are an absolute moron. Just ridiculous, and I hope Thigpen pants you when you first meet.
Posted by: Dishpan | September 29, 2009 at 09:45 PM
Armando, you've given up on Pat White WAY too early. Tyler Thigpen is not even remotely in the same class athletically, and Pat has shown he can lead a team in college. The Dolphins are wasting his talent by only planning on using him a few plays a game. He needs to learn the whole offense.
Posted by: greg williams | September 29, 2009 at 09:45 PM

I think White will be listed as the No 2 QB for one or two more games.
I agree with you. He will have to be listed as a WR sooner than later.
I think it was a bad strategy to begin with.
Posted by: odinseye | September 29, 2009 at 09:47 PM
No one is noticing something here. The Dolphins have 3 quarterbacks under the age of 25. Someone has to emerge. If not, they'll draft two more quarterbacks. They know they need one.
Posted by: perspective | September 29, 2009 at 09:48 PM
DOWNER12 , cheers ! Miami needs to give Clemons more reps with the starting unit at practice and then get in the game. The time has come. Wilson has lost a step , hence the bad angles he taking at recievers/backs .

Posted by: KillerDolphins | September 29, 2009 at 09:56 PM
Killer,
If that's the case, let's keep in mind he came to to the Fins for free. It's a no risk deal. There are also situations where one team sees a player one way, and he goes to another team and revives his career. I'm not saying this is the case here, but one never knows. And if nothing else, they needed some experience.
