Sparano's day-after presser [Updated]

Coach Tony Sparano just finished his press conference this morning.

Here's what he said:

He said the Dolphins gave up "172 minus yardage," which he equates to 12 1/2 points. Minus yardage is yards on fumble returns. Yards on sacks. Yards on interception returns. Etc...

The Dolphins also turned the ball over four times. "That's how you lose games in this league," Sparano said. "I told the team at halftime when we had two of them, 'you're aware that two turnovers in this league are hard to overcome. You know what you have to do. We have to work our tail off to overcome these and we have to try to take the ball away from them."

The Miami defense played relatively well. But it did not cause any turnovers.

Tight end Anthony Fasano was responsible for two of Miami's turnovers on fumbles following receptions. To his credit, he was in the locker room Sunday to face tough questions and did the same today.

"Protecting the ball has to be the No. 1 priority," Fasano said.

He added the bad outing is, "something I have to learn from.",

The Dolphins gave up four sacks but Sparano made it clear the problem was physical rather than a coaching issue in which the Falcons came with some new stunts or blitzes or rush schemes. "Nothing they did was any different than what we prepared for during the course of the week or than we seen. They just rushed the passer."

Yes, left tackle Jake Long yielded two sacks and had other breakdowns also. You can see the game's signature sack below as Long had what is easily the worst game of his young professional career. "It was not a winning performance," Sparano said of Long. "I think Jake would tell you that."

Sparano said the team is likely to shorten up the "edges" this week for the tackles, meaning the tackles are allowing too much air between themselves and the pass rusher and so the first contact between the two is too close to the quarterback. That will be adjusted versus Indy Monday night. Good thing because Dwight Freeney is a pretty good edge rusher.

Sparano hinted the interior of the offensive line needs to gel. The physical communication between the players is not good enough and certainly not at the point players pick each other up on twist stunts, which plagued Miami Sunday.

Having said all that, it doesn't sound as if Sparano is confident the offensive line can come out next week and be the unit the Dolphins are paying for -- the $156 million bunch, as I have repeatedly told you. It is, apparently going to be a process.

"It's correctable, I think they're correctable," Sparano said. "I don't think we'll get them all ironed out in a week, but we'll get some of them ironed out. We're going to work hard to do it."

Sparano defended the coaching staff's decision to call the gimmick plays with Pat White and others at the time they did. One of those came after Miami moved the ball into Atlanta territory. The call was a Ted Ginn Jr. pass/run option. It became a busted play and a momentum killer.

No one was open downfield for Ginn, according to the coach. And, by the way, there was "leakage," along the offensive line that caused Ginn to be looking for running room rather than downfield anyway."

As to the timing?

"Nothing there made me feel we should be running it here or anything like that," Sparano said. "From a play sequence standpoint, that wasn't the problem. The problem was execution."

Sparano said some of the usage of Pat White was designed as a "waste pitch," meant to see how the Falcons were lining up -- to get a picture, so to speak.

The Dolphins gave the Falcons two different pictures of their secondary Sunday, one with Sean Smith at right cornerback, the other with Vontae Davis at right cornerback. The two rookies were platooned every two series.

Smith started and took the first two series. Then Davis took over for two series and so on. The players were told beforehand that would happen. And the idea, one supposes, is to bring both rookies along. Davis is also progressing to the point where he's earned playing time.

But here is the problem: Making a hard and fast rule that one player or another will be in for two series basically ices the other player on the bench. Smith was in the first two series and went to the bench with 7:01 left in the first quarter.

Then the Miami offense held the ball for 5:50, then the Atlanta offense held the ball for 7:27, then the Miami offense had the ball for exactly three minutes, then Atlanta got it back for 1:25, then Miami held the ball for 2:14.

So Smith was out of the game for 19:55 or one quarter plus 4:55. That can't happen while expecting Smith to just come back in the game for Atlanta's two-minute offense and be on his game.

On the injury front, Sparano said the Dolphins emerged from the game with, "a couple of bumps but nothing major."

Finally (for now), Sparano said the game did serve a bigger purpose.

"We figured out where we are and what we have to do to win," he said.

Sammy, thats what iam saying, to many turnovers, the phins are a team built for NO TURNOVERS, they will lose eight out of ten if they have more then 2 T/O...

I know the quick fix everyone is dreaming of is inserting Henne. Boys, does not make the least bit of sense at this point in time. First off, the OL played like garbage. Do you think an inexperienced QB would have read the defense better then Pennington with the limited time he had in the pocket?

Secondly, if you place Henne in without him earning the job, which he clearly has not done as of yet, you are sending a message to your team that you do not plan to win now. With that, you risk dividing the locker room. Simply put, it is way too early. If Pennington continues to struggle and we lose 4 of 5 or something similar then that is a different situation and at that time I would expect to see a switch. Patience as it is a long season.

How humiliated Stephen Ross will be next Monday when the Phins open at home in front of all of his new show-biz partners.
Well at least they'll get to see what it looks like to have a horrible and ineffective offense while at the sametime the qb puts up MVP type ratings.
I expect that a week from tomorrow Dan Henning will be unemployed.

cuban, you know who's nj favorite player ? Fasano the fumble boy b/c he's from his GARDEN state .

as for selma , she's good after lunch in day time but eva.M is good after dinner at night time .

I'm kinda surprised the media hasn't mentioned much about the offensive line coaching change from Mike Maser to Dave DeGuglielmo over the offseason. From the sounds of Sparano talking about the gap and spacing, I wonder if they changed anything blocking scheme-wise?

Aloco, Selma looked good at nite when she was dancing on the table in "from dusk till dawn"....Though she turned into a vampire after her dance she was still hot..........

ted ginn's VALUE.........12.00 dollars

ronnie..........................57.00 dollars

chad.p...........................1,090 dollars

fasano............................ -200.00 dollars

coach.............................. 0

long................................ -1000 dollars

white..............................3000.00 dollars

the whole OL................74.00 dollars

aLOCO, thats "PRICELESS"...

Aloco, is that in peso's or euro's????

Hey "That guy" are you Ronnie Browns lover or what???
the guy sucks and yes they kicked our butts on both sides of the line but the fact remains that Ronnie Brown sucks, he sucked yesterday and he has been sucking since he was drafted...... if he was an elite running back he would get more than 20 yards... which I'm sure he did not get, so take it like a man and admit he sucks, as far as loosing the game I honestly don't care its 1 of 15 more so go cry on your beer along with Ronnie Brown once he gets traded at the end of the year..... you clown!

it's in ZAMBIAN CURRENCY cuban .

ps....each us dollar is 280 million zambian dollars .

cuban , some players some times play bad to move to another team .what i am saying is meatballs are in order here .

one more thing ,

RONNIE BROWN SAID FEW MONTHS BACK HE'S AN ELITE PLAYER ..ANY ONE REMEMBER THAT .lol lol lol

Aloco, I'll Take 2...

Aloco, no sauce on mine,Iam watching my wight...

i have to go to buy some bread for my girl friend to make us meatball subs.

For all you Ronnie Brown lovers, please next week get out of your little dolphin holes and open your eyes to the truth and analyze real running backs, do look at Adrian Peterson, Lendale White, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Marion Barber, Julius Jones, notice how ALL of the run straight down field, no dancing, no juke moves no bull!! to be effective you don't have to run 100+ yards every game or have a 5+yrds/carry .........but at the very least get some positive yards....all these guys get positive yardage and all have more yards than Ronnie Brown has ever had in his career....They can change the game on any single play.....Now before you get your panties in a wad, I understand our line is not the best but neither is the 49ers and Gore still kicks ass.... its about running styles and Ronnie is OK but he is NOT an elite Running Back.....not even close.....

Right on Aloco.... I do remember that..... hell if he is elite, that makes Adrian Peterson....... the superheroes all in one guy!! lol..lol

Joey, AMEN BROTHER, though iam not a ronnie hater you are correct my friend....same goes for Ted(Wheres the side line)Ginn jr.

Now that I have finally seen what keeps being described as Abraham's total bullrush manhandling of Long, I don't think that's really an accurate description. Long doesn't even look fully set, like he forgot the count or something. Obviously not a good thing, but a mental mistake that hopefully was a fluke.

some one wise said long ago ,

SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND SHOW ME WHAT CAN YOU DO .

RONNIE , HE DIDN'T SHUT HIS MOUT B/C AN ELITE MY FOOT.

FASANO..SHOWED US WHAT HE CAN DO ON THE FIELD . LOL

SEEMS EITHER WAY , THE FIN PLAYERS JUST suck.

I believe that with the coaching staff that we have, they have to be aware of what we do and dont have in are 53..bottem line, they dont look good...Atlanta looked like they picked up from a great last year and we didnt..

I'm not a Ronnie Brown hater at all but we have to be honest about what he is and he is a mediocre running back.... for every one good game he sucks at 5..... so it is what it is!! if you can't handle the truth then keep sticking your head in the ground but thats the sad reality.... i wish it would be different!!!!

Menace, that's a tough call. I would have to go with Selam Hayek just because she's a better actress. Eva Mendes is stunning but the fact that Hayek is so talented makes her hotter. Nevertheless a great question.

Oh cubanmenace, I agree with you on the Ted Ginn comment.. same deal.... we have not seen 1 good game from that guy..... if in 2 years being on the field he has not shown it, you better believe he never will........ TED GINN = BUST = DIVING FOR HIS LIFE....... LOL

man, how differently we all seem to watch these Dolphin games...

go ahead and hate my statements, call me a hater, say I am not a REAL phins fan, call me a cry baby...WHATEVER...it still does not change the fact that we have a HUGE problem at QB. The reason the Baltimore playoff game looks so similar to yesterday's game is because defenses have figured us out. it is not hard, load the box, the line of scrimmage, with 6 players, 7 players, maybe 8 players with no concern for the deep ball. The 6-8 players in the box are stuffing the holes and anything short. the defense is NOT WORRIED about the deep ball. BECAUSE Penny does not have a deep ball, or fails to use it or the coaching staff doesn't want to call it. Either way it is not happenning and our running game and receivers AND defense are suffering because of it. simply that. we do not have a QB that can utilize the weapons we already have. Running game and defense win championships but I seem to remember they also had a superbowl caliber QB...Roethlisberger, E Manning, Brady, P Manning, and the list goes on. Penny is not a superbowl caliber QB. If we want to win or play for a superbowl in 3 years or 5 years, it would seem like we better start looking for a new QB ASAP!

Henne as with other great QB's would of shown us something by now if he was the guy. this is not like Rodgers and Favre, where we are having to sit a stud QB because he is behind another stud QB. Henne has not done anything to win the job and recently has not shown anything to win the job. AND he plays BEHIND Pennington...

Great post shawn, Iam out so I can patrol the mall(lol), you guys have a Phintastic nite....

good night

ROLE CALL HERE..........

for all the one's complaining, which of you didn't want the FINS to sign TOP NOTCH, ALL-PRO PLAYMAKERS???????

every year most of you bozo's always say DON'T SPEND TO MUCH MONEY, well well, you see what you get

instead of signing 5 mediocre free agents GIVE ME 2 STUDS, then you fill your roster with draft and journeymen f/a

-------I wanted KENNY BRIT, yes the Vontae pick was good, but we needed a BIG WR with SPEED, and then we got SEAN SMITH great pick, but why the heck PAT WHITE a project QB with the 2ND RD PICK, we could of then got another CB to go with SEAN SMITH

---------again we spent to much money on mediocre FREE AGENTS, even BELL at his age and injuries and look he always misses tackles, GIBRIL who? FASANO, TORBOR, ANDERSON, GROVE for that price, AKIN, I know I'm just listing A FEW, but these are GREAT BACK UPS AND GIVE YOU GREAT DEPTH, and if we had some MAJOR STUDS then maybe you could plug these guys in but until you spend some money on some TOP NOTCH STUDS.............

--------------PLEASE GET A PUNT RETURNER, Bess, Please I can run faster than him......

---------LOOKS LIKE WE NEED A left tackle, AND MOVE JAKE LONG TO RIGHT TACKLE

gd luck with the ladies Menace...don't pick up anyone named Penny!

man, since Danny Boy retired...we never set ourselves up with a quality backup to take over the reigns (ala Favre / Rodgers) and in the last 10 years we have the following at QB;

Fiedler
Huard
Lucas
Griese
Feeley
Rosenfels
Frerotte
Culpepper
Harrington
Lemon
Beck
Pennington

WOW. 12 crap QB's in the last 10 years. that is some terrible sh*t. What most of these guys have in common is they were brought in to manage the game, don't make any mistakes and usually don't throw deep. Penny is the pinnacle, the peak, to that approach. after looking at that list, our track record, what makes you think Pennington or Henne are the superbowl type QB we are looking for since Marino. what have you seen that I haven't? It was a waste of Marino abilities to not have a running game, and therefore no championship. It is a waste of our superbowl caliber D, coaching staff, front office and money spent on our Oline and other offensive weapons when we are being so held back at the QB position now and for the last 10 years. FIND A QB ASAP. he is not here...

If you Losers want to pre-view the next world champs tune in at at 7 on espn and watch the greatest team go undefeated this time while the great Tom Brady removes himself from his hot wife and throws for T.Ds to the great Randy moss and the new addition of Fred Taylor, this team will make your "72" dolphins unable to uncork there stupid champagne bottle...Which is a stupid tradition, when was the last time you losers won a super bowl??? almost 40 years ago????? lollollollollollol.....

You Bozos want to see a real pro team play , check out espn at 7 pm and watch the greatest QB who ever played the game(And the supermodels) Tom Brady as he comes back to lead what should be the greatest team in NFL history, look for 20 TDs to randy Moss, Look for 120 receptions to Wes Welker(you Idiots remember him right??) And the newest addition to team perfect Fred Taylor, will i guess you idiots will be enjoying yourselves in the bottom of the AFC east cellar(you should be use to it right??) So tune in and watch a real Pro team play.........

What is quite amusing about your list of QB's is Fiedler was arguably the best of the bunch up to Pennington.

So we aren't going to win let alone challenge for the super bowl...I think we can all agree on that.

Pennington IS NOT the future of this team...we can all agree on that.

Our offense is once again plodding, undynamic and lacking a deep threat...once again pretty hard to deny that.

So my question is when is Henne going to get a chance to learn in real time game action?

Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Sanchez, Stafford, Flacco, Cassel, Cutler, Rivers...need I go on?

The future is now and Miami nneds to get on with the program. Penny needs to be a sideline mentor/coach emergency QB.

Henne needs to be given his shot now! No one expects him to be a savior but its time we find out what he's got. Let the kid take his lumps and learn the game.

This current band-aid plan with Pennington has played itself out.

TEAM PERFECT UP ON THE AIR IN 10 MINUTES......

^ minutes till Team perfect starts.. Get ready also order some take out from applebees.. HaHaHaHa.. THE PATS RULE BABY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You Losers have more of a problem then a Q.B, you idiots need a lot including a head coach, receiver, offensive line,ETC,ETC,ETC the list is long so enjoy your mediocrity.....

Zed if we were 1-7 your plan would make perfect sense.

TEAM PERFECT PLAYING .............

Hey look there playing in throw backs, you guys can think back 40 years and think of old glory days...HAHAHAHA

cuban and aloco talking to himself YOU F'N LOSER SOB

Mike, Chad Pennington is a Godsend, I am not a hater; there is a thing called evolution and Miami is evolving past Penny. Henne has the arm but does he have the skill and vision? Now is the time to find out. If he’s not the “man” ,we need to find that out ASAP. Now is good as good a time as any.Is the AFC East championship what we strive for? GO BILLS!!

TOOL isn't it time for you and brady to play“ hide the wrench”?

Well said Shawn, With the safeties cheating up it affects the entire offence’s output, rushing and passing; the deep threat keeps the safeties honest just as attempting rushing keeps the Linebackers From dropping back in coverage and allows play action to be successful (credibility).

Look at Buffalo’s Safeties against The Patriots, there so far back they have to run for 5 minutes to get back to defend the run or even be seen on the TV screen.

Wes Welker,our biggest mistake ever.

GO PATS!!!!!, oh never mind. Schobel you da man!

Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward.

This game showed our offense was playing like a bunch of JV's having their lunch handed to them in a paper bag. We where out coached and out played by a better team and coach. I don't care if Pennington has a noodle arm or not, the offensive line was bad most of the day and Long who has some learning to do got spanked, Smiley played bad and as a whole the offense scored a booty touchdown. Kudos to Rick Williams for that TD.

We went away from the run much to often and when we had any momentum or mo' the wildpat quickly killed it and Pat White was so nervous that he over threw Ginn by 30 yards. We should have taken advantage of what was a suspected run defense from Atlanta and run the ball early and often. We played vanilla on both sides of the ball early on and had the same schemes on offense that teams where use to already and showed nothing new.

Defense played well, but we blitzed often at the wrong times. One of those times we blitzed Gonzalez, broke to the flat and caught the ball and juked Bell for a 20-yard TD.
That play their Bell overran and didn;t square up properly to tackle Gonzo. Bell needs to make that tackle!

But over all the Defense played good, its hard to overcome four TO on offense and little to no adjustments fromt the O-line. In game adjustments from the o-line on stunts and pick ups. Long was beat for a sack by John Abrham because he was speed rushing early in the game and caught him off guard with the bull rush. Long needs to smack him early on before Abrahm gets any mo' this prevents the bull rush and makes him stay with the speed rush which Long still played to high. Even on the bull rush play for a sack that Abraham got Long was still too high to even have a chance.

This is what I've seen during the preseason and its carried over to the start of the regular season: No coehesion on the offensive line. It;s still early and this o-line hasn;t been together long enough to gel just yet but that what camp and pre season was for.

The season is early and its only one game, the Dolphins will be fine once the O-line gels and develops a rythem to the offense. I'm happy with our D and we will get better as the season goes along. That is a first class offense the Dolphins played. The falcons are gonna score alot, ALOT of points. Even our Dolphin D giving up 19 [points to this potent offense is however low also misleading. Given the Dolphin Offense turned the ball over 4 times 2 which lead directly to points. So defensively we are good.

Just have to wait for the offense to step up and take the next few steps lets see what happens next week against Indy, Manning and company. I know this much our offense will find answers and our coaching staff is too good not to get the O-line geln', better and coehesive then our offense production will better because it starts up front.

This game we took one step back, I expect the Dolphins offense to take two steps forward next Monday night. We will i know we will.

GoDolphins

Like I said in my post from last week, the reason why the trifecta hasn't offered anything long term to Chad Pennington is because this year is the real test. Yes, he played well last year, however, this year he's going up against much better defenses. Is he still going to be productive or are we going to see the Chad Pennington we saw against the Ravens? (In both games). And the other thng I said was that Matt Ryan should of been the pick. Jake Long can and probably will become a good player, but when you can draft a franchise QB, you do it. We passed on Drew Brees (draft and free agency), and now we passed on Matt Ryan. Not good. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Chad Henne, cause if he doesn't pan out, we'll be 0 for 2 as far as QB's are concerned. But it's 1 game, we shouldn't get alarmed too fast, but we'll have to see improvement against Indy. Go Fins!

Like what the coach had to say, like Chad, hope the line jel's if not start looking at Mark Lewis on the practice squad a little more serious ,coach. He can play 3 positions, hits like a mule protects the pocket,at 6ft 5 315 he could eat a little more.

Good game D good game 34 Go FINS!!

Team perfect looks like team old and beatable to me

hate to say it but did you see the zip from matt ryan's ball? Wow and Henne should have a stronger arm than Ryan so I'm wondering how fast Henne would have progressed if he had been thrown under the gun like flacco and Ryan were?? We wouldn't have went 11-5 or made playoffs realistically but we'd be in a better position to win now I think if He'd have 1 year game experience. I don't know if waiting another year is such a smart move. if we drop 4 in 6 games i would make the move immediately And why is white listed # 2 now?

just three points tonight worst to best: culpepper over brees. hopefully anthony gonzalez is out for sure next monday. we could have jake delhome, talk about choke city. again.

This was the perfect loss if there is such a thing.
These guys looked like they've been reading to many Herald press clippings.
That having been said said, let me address the crybabies. If you all REALLY knew football, you'd know the story. 4 turnovers, period. Who wins in this league with that many?

Pop the cork tool

poor tommy, winning is just not nearly as easy with out the belicheck cheat sheet. ha! f it go bills.
