Dolphins in a home Super Bowl a nightmare?

There is truly a leadership void afoot in this country. I believe that, for whatever reason, many people we have stupidly installed into leadership roles have lost their way.

I'm talking about leaders in business, politics (from all the parties), the car industry, Wall Street and the financial industry and, sadly, everywhere in government.

We don't have people that get it anymore.

And that's where Broward County tourism director Nicki Grossman comes to mind today. This story in The Miami Herald tells how Grossman, a long-time South Florida public servant and Dolphins season-ticket holder (she claims), is rooting against the Dolphins making it to the Super Bowl this year.

Now, suspend the argument about whether the Dolphins are good enough to get to the Super Bowl or not. That's not the point. The point is how anyone can bring themselves to root against their own team for selfish reasons.

And Grossman, by the way, has selfish reason. As head of the tourism folks, Grossman wants to see the Super Bowl fill every hotel room in her county come next January and early February. And, she figures, if the Dolphins are in the game, the hotel rooms won't be filled because local fans can sleep in their own beds at night.

So there would be no great influx of Super Bowl fans.

But this is where Grossman misses the mark. She obviously does not understand that Dolphins fans are everywhere. I have become intimately of this fact because in every stadium the Dolphins play, there are typically  at least 2,000 Dolphins fans rooting for Miami. I am also aware that all my readers are not from South Florida. In fact, a majority are from outside South Florida.

You guys are Dolphins fans in Texas, the Carolinas, New York, Hawaii, everywhere. And I get the feeling many of you would come to South Florida to watch your team be in its first Super Bowl since 1984. Am I right?

Grossman also doesn't get the drift that a Super Bowl game is played by two teams. And the other team not being from South Florida will surely also bring fans.

So her vision, in rooting openly against the Dolphins, is myopic.

Leadership? Not so much.

So this is what I want you to do. Go to the comments section and tell me exactly where you are from in the country. Tell me if you would be inclined to come to a Dolphins Super Bowl celebration or not.

Now, I didn't ask if you'd be coming to the game. I know the tickets are expensive and hard to get. Grossman doesn't care about that anyway, she just needs folks that yearly come for the week of Super Bowl atmosphere and fun, filling the beds in local hotels. Whether those folks are in the stands on Super Bowl Sunday is moot.

Remember: Are you an out-of-town Dolphins fan? And would you trek to South Florida to join in the Dolphins Super Bowl celebration?

Is Grossman right to believe the Dolphins playing a home Super Bowl would be a nightmare? Or is she lacking vision?

Chicago, Illinois, born and raised. I like the Bears but I have always LOVED the dolphins. The advent of these sites have really helped fans from far away like us keep up with the Dolphins like only a local beat coverage can provide. So thanks mando, and yes I will be there if they go to the Super Bowl!

I'm from south Carolina and I would definitley come to some supa bowl festivities in Florida if the fins were to make it to the supa bowl

Mando, can you hear the swirling sound? That's the sound of a once proud civilization going down the drain. And I'm afraid there's no stopping it, baring a revolution.

You are quite correct in what you say and what you infer. We have lost our way.

This POS Grossman is just a symptom of a much larger problem. BTW, scrape the surface and you'll find this piece of garbage came from the north or mid west.

I live in Los Angeles. Probably couldn't make the game because of work but if the stars aligned I would go.

Seattle, WA

I'm in!

i am from japan and i love to eat dolphin meat like crazy.i am happy they are in the super bowl

I'm from Hamilton (near Toronto), Canada and I'd be there. Someone once asked me how much I'd pay to see the dolphins in the super bowl, and I answered 'all in, $10,000'. If it was in Miami... probably $15k.

4th Gen,

Only problem with a revolution is the great possibility of swapping the witch for the devil. Sad to say at least we know what we have with this evil.

I'm from Amarillo, Texas and have been a Fins Fans since Marino's early days.

This Grossman lady is so typical of greedy, left wing bureaucratic idiots. You ought to put her email up her so she can just hear from all the Dolphins fans around this great USA and from other places abroad how idiotic she really is and how many of us there are.

Remember this chump lady folks, when you start thinking that government is the answer to your problems. This is the type of self interested, mindless, money-grubbing, back-stabbing you can expect from a politician, EVERY TIME.

Baltimore. I'm in. Dolphin fans r everywhere!

I also am from Miami but grew up in the Hoth system. You wouldn't believe how cold it is here. Anyway, saving my money to hitch a ride on a spice freighter. Some have light speed capability so, I'll be back in Miami soon.

I am from Wisconsin and now live in South Carolina. I have been a diehard fins fan since the age of five. People ask me all the time why I back Miami and not the Packers. It all started with the Marino days I guess, and grew from there. I would be crazy not to do everything in my power to get my hands on some superbowl tickets if the Dolphins made it.

RS Davis,

There is no such beast as right or left wing. Youre either right or wrong and has absolutely nothing to do with being divided along party lines.

BTW, did you research which party she belongs to before condenming her as a leftwinger? Hmmm.... then it sounds to me you could be pretty leftwing yourself if it really exists.

Mando,

I am a Dolly fan since my first memories of Dan Marino zinging footballs all over his first full record setting year. I have been through the ups and downs (Ricky up ehn down and now definitely up), the dreams and the nightmares, the highs and lows (JJ and Saban's teams), and finally, the two biggest atrocities in professional sports - the outting of Don Shula and Dan Marino! Now I finally have a renewed hope of a truly special team...and best of all, I have my 8 year old son and my 18 month old son rooting as hard for OUR team - just as I did decades ago. We live in Kailua, Hawaii and although it would cost a fortune - I WOULD BE THERE FOR MY TEAM!

Robert Jacobus

Greensboro, NC. I go to at least 2 games per year anyway. Yes I would go see the Dolphins in the superbowl pending ticket availability. Been a fan since 1968 and would not miss it!

DyingBreed, there was once a group of people who bet everything, even losing their lives, their families and material posessions on what they believed in.

We have become a nation of sheep, baaa!

I am from DC, live in NYC and run DolfansNYC the Dolphins fan club in New York City. We bought 30 tickets for the damn jets game and half our members already had tickets.

If the Dolphins ever make the Super Bowl I will be there, no matter where it is... And my guess, I will be rolling deep.

I grew up in Northeast Ohio and being a life-long Dolphins fan it was never easy catching the games. After going to college in Miami, where I was able to indulge my passion, moved to NYC where I get to see them once a year! So yes, definitely looking forward to a visit to South Florida when the Dolphins are back in the Superbowl!

I am from North Carolina. The main reason I wouldn't come is the cost of the tickets. Although the chance to see the Dolphins become the 1st team to play the super bowl in their home stadium might be worth spending what it would take. It's free on TV and you get more angles and replays. You also get to laugh at the commercials.

San Diego California, though originally from New Jersey.
I'd definitely make it.
Fan since 1984.

Living in Indy the last 20 years. Grew up in the Gables. I make it to at least one game each year in Miami.

I'd not only come to Miami, but I'd also bring the gang of other Fins Fans who watch with me each week at Trader's Mill (NW side - 86th & Zionsville Rd), and I'd make sure my fins buddies in SoCal and NC show up too!

i miss the old days when a man was a man and a woman was a woman and the dollar was a dollar .men were strong like iron and women were cooking hearty soups all day for the men after coming fro the field .
go fins .

4th Gen,

IMO its because the skill of critical thinking is fast becoming a lost art. People now only believe and think as they are programmed. Most now believe the ability to be right or wrong is square based upon political affilliation.

If so, many a sheep are lost for they dont have the inate ability to realize that no one is truly right or wrong all the time based singularly on political affilliations.

America has replaced God with two demi-gods(Rep/Dem) and in both, its people believe they can do no wrong. Bahhhh...bahaaaahhh, goes the blind sheep to the slaughter!

Long time dolphin fan here from New York. I try and go to Miami once a year for a game. Just came back from the dolphin jets game. Might I add I came back very happy. If the dolphins made it to the superbowl I would do everything I could to be there count me in. Let's go fins!!!!!

DyingBreed,
Or maybe you could use some instruction on what political definitions mean. I don't care if she's GOP, DEM or Green Party. There's plenty of corrupt, idiotic cash grabbers in each of those. Party labels mean little in 2009.

But when a politico puts her own stupid government agenda ahead of the people, THAT'S leftwing. Left wing means government first, government big and government is right. Sound anything like Grossman to you?

You should fear idiots like her because from the tiny little seeds these morons grow from come totalitarian regimes.

And I am not left wing. I believe in the Constitution as it was written by our very wise founding fathers, NOT in some bureaucrat trying to run my life for my own good.

Now, on to more serious topics.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I'm I lifelong fan in Atlanta, that has traveled to Miami on many occasions to see regular season games. There's no way I would miss any of the entire week leading up to the Super Bowl. You can book my hotel room for a week. God, this woman is dense!

I'm in the Central Florida area.

This Grossman is a moron! I've been a diehard dolfan since as long as I can remember, and I would NEVER root against the Fins for any reason! On gamedays, I always tell any of my family (except for my Dad who is a Diehard fan like me) that unless you're seriously hurt or the house is on fire, don't bother me. I would defintely drive down to see the Dolphins in the Super Bowl! True fans stick to their teams!

RS Davis,

Thanks for the correction and Im glad to see that you arent just a blind little political sheep as many today are.

Fan since 1990. San Jose, Ca. Big Marino fan and Shula fan. Went to Marino induction in Canton. Would enjoy a home superbowl, but can't this year because of birth of 2nd Child. Go Dolphins! Goal for me is to see the phins play in new england, buffalo, and new jersey in the next 10 years.

Dolphins would not be the first to play in home area. Niners did it in 1984 v. The phins. Palo Alto is close to San Franciso. 25 miles.

She is an idiot! I am from NAPLES and there are a ton of us here! Every Sunday homegame you see us on I-75 but for the Superbowl or a Monday or Sunday night game...... We get hotels!!!!! What an idiot this woman is....

Mass, Patriot town, and the biggest Fin Fan in New England. Actually, there's a lot of us to be honest. Just happens to be 2 more in the grocery store I work in. I would be the first in line to Ft Lauderdale to watch the super bowl, prob in local bar.

fin fan from ohio since '73--get me tics, Mando, and i'm there!! (plus jan/feb in ohio sucks.)

Did Busch put her in office?
I,am from toledo oh. and would deffenetly come to the game. Not sure if I wold stay in Miami ar just commute from oh. (idiot)

I live in Atlanta. Went to my first Dolphin game in 1984 with my dad. I will be there in Miami if they make it.

DyingBreed,
Let's keep the thread germane!
You didn't say where you were from!

To carlos I started following the Dolphins back in 73 I played peewee football in Phoenix with no home team me and my brothers picked teams I picked the Dolphins. Since I have lived in MIchigan GO BLUe! for thirty years now reside in Nebraska. I believe you pick a team and stick with it, I love the Dolphins drove girlfriends nuts made my first wife pick other teams just to distract from my devotion now my new wife just laughs at me when I say it makes me happy win or lose so yes I would even go without tickets just to go to a sports bar and be with other Dolphans for the big game I've been to two Dolphin games both losses but still had a great time! Robert from zonk to M arino to Wildcat.

being a lifelong dolphins fan in utica ny which is between albany and syracuse i dont get to alot of home games one a year and this year was the colts game but if we get to the super bowl especially at home you bet your ASS! ill be there. by the way hey rex how did those two 230 pound sledge hammers taste that were running down your throat all night haha

CUban is a Jets fan! Just have a terrible football team and shut your mouth!

Grew up in Hollywood. Bought my first home in Cooper City.
Season tix holder 1981 - 1998. Had to move to Chicago for work and now live in Memphis.
I haven't missed a Dolphins game since '81.
I would be there and bring a plane-load of friends with me.
Probably a dozen hotel rooms.

RA Davis,

Nice vocab, it not every day you hear pertinent referred to in its synonym form of germane.

Im a lifelong Florida resident although Ive vagabounded about several other places.

Armondo keep it up we all lnow you are a real journalist not like talking head on tv if some people don't like it guess what this is still AMERICA! you go girl

fun discussion today got to go make the pizzas Nebraskas on TV should be long night good for economy

i am a huge fan from san francisco. i would love to go to miami if they went to the superbowl!

go miami!

Get rid of that Grossman!
Washington, D.C. life long Dolphin fan.

In Chicago here. I would sell my right nut to go to a Dolphin SB!!!!

From Hickory, NC. Been a fan since I was a little pisser watching Dallas beat Miami in the Superbowl. Bet my sorry-ass gambling abusive dad $1 in that game and lost.

Bet my dad $1 every single game the following year and got $17 back.

Oh yeah. EFF the Jets!!!!!!!!!

NY Fans celebrated in Giants Stadium 10K strong when we beat the jets to win the AFC Eas title last year!

I'm from Edmonton and in a heartbeat I'd travel to Miami if the Fish were in the Super Bowl

there are a lot of dolphins fans here in northern california. go dolphins!

I'm from Memphis, TN and come to atleast 3 homes games per year. I would never pass the chance to see the Dolphins in any super bowl no matter the location or cost.

Omaha, Nebraska, Dolphins fan since '87, would love to go ANYWHERE to see the dolphins in the 'bowl

Live in CT. No doubt I'd be there. Don't see how someone in the tourism business could root against the home team. Winning team brings in business year round, not just super bowl week. What about playoffs? No interest in renting rooms for those?

'mando, I reside in Johnston, Rhode Isalnd. Most people don't even know where RI is. So for those that don't, we are just south of Massachusetts and north of NY.
Anyway, there are lots of Fins fans up here. In the Marino days, before Direct TV we used to pack sports bars and we always outnumbered everyone except Pats fans(sometimes even them). Anyway, if we make the SB I'll be there along with 4 or 5 of my Dolfan buddies. Go Fins!!!!!

I grew up in PA and live in VA and, of course, would come to Miami. Much like the Cowboys (and a few others), the Dolphins have a national following.

Hi I am from liverpool , England , UK , would be a dream to come and watch the fins period never mind a Super Bowl in Miami , would just settle for a beer and a spot in the ESPN bar in Disney Orlando if they ever get there so couldn't disagree with this lady more

Slovenia, Europe...and if the Dolphins get to the SB i'm so there!

I grew up in Florida, but now live in Atlanta. If the Fins were in the superbowl, there is no way I'd miss it! I'd be down there in a heartbeat!

I'm from the jersey shore and i would b there without a doubt whatever the price. After being at the dolphins/jets game last year where the dolphins won the afc east my brother and I bought playoff tickets the very next day and drove to florida for the wild card game. However, I think I would fly to the superbowl instead of making that drive again.
