Ronnie Brown better as he carries more

I remember travelling to Cartersville, Ga. in 2005 to do a story on Ronnie Brown and having his mom tell me she would wait in the tunnel for Tommy Tuberville after some Auburn games to ask the Auburn coach why he wasn't starting her son.

And Brown, learning of this, would ask his mom to refrain from doing such things because whatever the coach decided to do was fine by him.

Brown remains the same in that regard. The Dolphins ask him to run the ball 12 times, he'll do that. The Dolphins ask him to carry it 25 times, he'll gladly do that as well. And he will not complain, he will not second-guess.

But ask the statistics how to maximize Ronnie Brown and they scream, "GIVE HIM THE BALL MORE!"

And the Dolphins are doing precisely that so far this year. Last year, Brown carried the football 214 times. So far this year he's on pace to carry 288 times. That would be a 34.5 percent increase. (Note, I stink at math so if it's not really a 34 percent increase kindly correct me in the comment section, with an emphasis on kindly.)

There are some good reasons Brown is getting more use in 2009. Firstly, he is now further removed from his late 2007 knee surgery so he can withstand the strain of more work. Secondly, Brown produces better when he gets more work.

Notice I did not say he produces more. Any NFL running back will deliver more yards with more carries, which is producing more. But Brown is producing better, meaning his rushing average rises in games he gets the ball more often.

In the two games this year he's carried the ball 20 times or more, Brown is averaging 5.7 yards per carry. In the two games this year he's carried the ball fewer than 20 times, Brown is averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

That is not true of all running backs. Ricky Williams, for example, this season is averaging 4.4 yards per carry in games he gets the ball 15 times or more and is averaging 6.2 yards per carry in games he carries it fewer than 10 times.

The point is some running backs seem to thrive as they carry the ball more. Ronnie Brown so far this season is proving himself to be one of those.

And what does that suggest?

As offensive coordinator Dan Henning said a few weeks ago, "feed the stud." The Dolphins should continue to give Brown the football.

Lots.

Killer,

A bit of advice if I may.

Quit sticking things in your head. I think it's crowded enough in there already!

Ah hah hah!!!!

I do wonder what he is on too odie

I doubt that it's anything you could buy on a street corner.
If you could bottle it though you could probably make a fortune.

Killer,

Didn't mean to offend you. I was just curious.

Oh well, I've got my favorite Valkyrie staying the night. I already tore it up and put her to bed. Think I'll wake her up for round two!!!!

Cheers!

nite odie

Will Miami get Ronnie locked up for years to come? Is this his last year on his contract? Should they get a new deal done NOW? I think so!

Armando can you look into this? How will next years potential bargaining agreement have a bearing?

I would love to read about that.

I would sure hate to lose him to another team.

Gotta say mando, you do create very entertaining videos. And I also must give you the fact that you can create a sense of security. I know we don't have the best receivers, and I know we don't have the best quaternary back. But we deffinatly do have the best half backs in the league. There is not one person that can say differently. Thanks for the post and the movie. Almost went to get popcorn and watch it again.

Funny seeing this blog considering that Armando used to be at the front of the Ronnie Brown's a bust line. Nice to see that people are finally atarting to see the error in their ways. Not only is Ronnie Brown great but he's also a total TEAM guy. Even though he may lack Adrian Peterson speed, Ronnie was a 4.4 guy in the combines coming out of college. That's pretty good speed to me. The reason he get's caught somwetimes is because most of his big runs come right up the middle instead of around the corner. Go Phins

Love Ronnie Brown. Always have. People used to diss us for taking him over Braylon Edwards. It was a great choice.

I haven't been on blog all day yesterday because I sick and here I find someone impersonate me for hours and hours. Not even use my real name, just "carlito".

Sheesh, get a life.

Go Dolphins!

Ronnie the Rabid Beast my favorite elite back

Mando,

Did you notice who Ronnie ran over in the opening TD of the video? The 16th overall pick of the 2006 draft Jason Allen LOL

I wonder when the media are going to wake up and realize why the wildcat works so much better for Miami than any other team copying it?

The answer: Ronnie Brown

I hate it when people say I said something I have not. I have never said Ronnie Brown was a bust or anything similar. I maintained in 2005, 2006, 2007 he was not elite and he was not back then. There is a difference.

He is playing like an elite guy this year, no doubt.

And yes, that is Jason Allen getting trucked by Ronnie to start the vid. Sad.

I want to see Smith, Davis, and Allen all on the field at the same time. Any1 think this might work? Allen pref. at the nickel spot.

yea, and before he got injured wasn't ronnie first in nfl for all purpose yards?

PLEASE RESIGN RONNIE BROWN <3 <3 <3

Interesting perspective Armando. Your facts are correct, but didnt we say the same thing about Ricky when he was the workhorse 5+ years ago. I think most backs except perhaps tiny scatbacks perform best with 20-25 carries. I suspect Ricky would see the same type of efficiency with more carries but probably would get tired legs as the season wore on as he is getting a bit long in the tooth.

What about Ricky? He plays better when he gets more carries as well. He is still the better back then Ronnie and should be getting the ball more, if he did, he could average over 100 yards and at least one touchdown a week.

FIRST, ALLEN GETTING TRUCKED REALLY ISN'T NOTHING.

Him being a 1st round pick and at the very least getting no chance to play and getting paid all that cake for special teams.

NOT THAT YOU CARE BUT RICKY's MY BOY.

PUFF PUFF PASS BABY

PASS THE DUTCHIE PON THE LEFT HAND SIDE.

RICKY IS THE 2nd BEST RUNNING BACK IN NFL HISTORY.

BUT if his stupid @ss didn't SMOKE with me RONNIE would never be a DOLPHIN.

I TOLD HIM THAT WAS THE GOOD SHi+.

Relax Armando. Facts are that you did say that Ronnie wasn't elite and that the results then were not good enough for being picked #2.

Congratulations for such astute observations. Perhaps you'll realize that just because you have been around the Dolphins for 15+ years it doesn't mean that you know more about football than us fans.

Every day I read your blogs on the only professional football team I have followed since 1971. Everyday I see fans post questions that invariably are rarely answered. Instead of whining how much you hate when someone mis-quotes you why don't you provide some answers. After all, you're the one on the inside and the one who we trust for valid information.

Yank the string out, pull up your big boy shorts and answer some f'ing questions.

Go Phins!

ronnie is awesome! power quickness vision catching and blocking ability! the guy is the most complete back in the league. as far as speed yeah he gets caught from behind. he ran a 4.38 at the combine and he has lost some overall speed due to injury but he still has enough to get the job done.

awesome highlight clip. truckin everyone.

I LOVE Ronnie!! He's a bad a*s and when he's running mad, he explodes on defenders!! Imagine if he wasn't caught from behind so much! Geeze-a-mighty!!

that highlite was great along with mudshovle

No Doh! I wrote that back in week one when Ronnie only had like 8 carries. Thanks for proving me right.

I've been screaming this since his rookie year. Ronnie needs the ball more.

Matt, if you've got a question, ask it already.

I answer plenty of questions here, via email and on twitter. I don't, however, pay much attention to dudes complaining like little girls.

Look guys the reason this team starts slow, is alot of rookies, and second year players, followed by no tackling at practice, so it takes some time for our team to adjust to tackling, full contact games, which is why our offense spudders, and our defense gives up big plays, but whats the pay off? It is a good slate of health early in the season. Is it a good trade off? Well time will tell, with whether or not we go to playoffs, but so far im not realy enjoying it.

Mando you complain like little girl about receiver all the time.

PLEASE give ronnie the ball!! our offense has one real playmaker, and thats ronnie... He needs to touch the ball as much as possible to maximize our offense.

AWESOME VIDEO

Carlito Come Flog my Dolphin!

Killer,

You a sad little man. I am big fan of Mando, everybody know this, just busting chop. What you problem? I think you Jets fan in disguise.

I can tell by the way you treat him

No wonder your alone in this world monkey that's a very sad monkey I know

IF THEY GAVE TED GINN THOSE TYPE OF TOUCHES MAYBE WE WILL SEE MORE OUT OF HIM.

IT's HARD TO BE PRODUCTIVE WHEN YOU GET THREE PASSES THROWN YOUR WAY. ON THE AVERAGE TED GINN GOT 2 PASSES THROWN HIS WAY A GAME THROUGH OUT HIS TIME WITH THE FINS. WE HAVE TO FEED HIM.

ARMANDO YOU DON't ANSWER QUESTIONS.

NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD BUT AFTER YOU SAY WHAT YOU SAY IT's ON TO THE NEXT POST.

ARMANDO,

it's nice to see that you have a smart guy like MATT getting under your skin for a change.his points are true since there's no one is perfect .

ps ..hope you are doing well .tommorwo is one month since your mom passing

Carlito I mean Gopats you scum get lost!

AFC I can tell you don't know anything about football keep given Ginn the ball Child Please!!!!

Great idea Mando,

You must have read Mike Beradinos article a couple of days ago!

killerdolphins,

you are the Gibril Wilson of this blog

and your the douche bag of this site GOPats

They need to get the ball in Ginn and Cobbs hands they both have potential for game changes plays. At least they gave ginn the ball for an end around last game. Last year he took a couple of those to the house.

or carlito what ever you call yourself

Ginn should not be getting anything thats not a punt return or kick return once in a while blue moon throw the deep ball to him and see if Dupper has been finally training him..LOL

time for my low fat meatball sub w/fried banana .

KDOLPHINS , why don't you go to paris for a week to change air and buy few things for yourself ?

Armando,
So do you believe Ronnie Brown has lived up to his 2nd overall pick yet? I remember somebody from the miami herald a few years ago writing an article on how Ronnie Brown isn't a special back, and won't live up to the pick. He'll never be elite.

Aloco, Gopats, Cralito, etc... you have some real issue's "Gopats" now I now why your a cross dressing monkey thats a PATs fan on a dolphin Blog Sick just sick

I now how you got in this counrty didnt Gissel and Tom get married in Costa Rica you must be be the typing monkey that they pickup over there how did Tom sneek you in? I it must of been up his A*s

Chase, interesting question.

Has Ronnie Brown lived up being the No. 2 overall pick in 2002? Yes. He is probably right now considered the third best player picked in the first round of the 2005 draft.

I would say DeMarcus Ware was the best and Aaron Rogers (although it took him a while to show it) would be second. Brown is third in my opinion.

This is as of today. Understand Brown can go and rush for 2,000 yards next year while Ware and Rogers poop themselves and the scales are suddenly weighted differently.

Disagree? Agree?

No westernfin, I did not.

It sounds about right Armando

Carlito, I complain about receivers, no doubt about that. But I do it right to people's faces. I told Bill Pracells last year I didn't think the receivers were good enough. I've continued to ask Tony Sparano about the receivers and even got done asking him minutes ago why they didn't trade for Braylon Edwards -- not that I think he'd be the answer, but I asked the question.

So I'm not complaining like a little girl. I'm speaking my peace.

By the way, Sparano's answer will be in my column for Monday.

its the fans job to suport or team and call out players and staff when not on their game carlito is a pats fan who cares what he thinks all he does on this blog is stir up trouble anyways remember he is Gopats

what type on coherent answer or we going to get from a typing Monkey .

Hello mando, hope every things cool where you at(but doubtful seeing your in so.fla)Whats with the bickering on the blog by some posters or should i say posers???
