Sparano blames self, defends Ginn (sort of)

Coach Tony Sparano has just finished his day-after press conference and he started it by confirming that cornerback Will Allen is out for the year with a torn ACL on one of his knees. Allen will be placed on injured reserve and the team has called William Kershaw to add him to the roster.

Kershaw helps on special teams but is also an insurance policy for the fact ILB Channing Crowder is nursing a left arm/shoulder injury suffered against the Saints.

Sparano also took the blame for the screw-up just prior to halftime on Sunday versus the Saints. In that situation, the Saints were lined up for a field goal with five seconds left and no timeouts. The Dolphins called one of their time outs to make sure they had the right personnel on the field. The Saints then brought the field goal unit to the sideline, trotted out the offense and used the time remaining to score on a Drew Brees dive over the top.

It gave New Orleans seven points instead of three.

"I want my players to do this, I need to it myself," Sparano said. "I have to take ownership of the situation that happened at the end of the half yesterday. I always have the power of trump and I did not do that. [I] should have lived with what was out on the field in that situation. So it was a bad decision on my part."

If you've seen my column in today's Miami Herald and the previous post on this blog, I've called for Ted Ginn's benching. I asked Sparano, with all due respect, why he would continue to start Ginn when the player is clearly not performing, and, indeed, hurting Miami.

"Well, Armando, I thought some of the situations right now that have occurred, quite honestly, are circumstances," Sparano answered. "In other words, what I mean by that is there are a lot of things that go into some of these things.

"It's like asking me about Chad Henne's performance. Chad Henne's performance yesterday there's a lot of things that go into that. There's dropped balls, missed sight adjusts, things like that. Well, there are some of those things with Ted as well. In other words, the ball isn't thrown on time, he does beat the coverage and we don't get a chance to throw it.

"I think Ted is a young guy who is getting better and has been improving along the way. He just didn't have a real good ballgame yesterday."

I also asked if Ginn should have caught the pass that he instead tipped up in the air and was intercepted by Darren Sharper and returned for a touchdown. Sparano called the pass, "a very good ball," but said he wasn't sure if someone got a hand in Ginn's face to cause him to miss the pass.

Ginn was in the locker room today playing dominoes. After cruising from the locker room without talking on Sunday, he declined to speak with the media again today. He told a Dolphins media relations person he would speaking on Wednesday.

Sparano, meanwhile, said you can expect more playing time for Brian Hartline, who caught three passes for 94 yards. (Obviously, the player whose snaps will be diminished when Hartline's are increased should be Ginn, but Sparano did not say that.)

"With me," Sparano said, "how you play in the game kind of merits whether you should play more and I think Brian played good enough yesterday to merit playing more."

Discuss while I get you more stuff ...

Well now that the season is over what do we do?

Cyrus, I will buy your seat only if Jimmy Buffet plays WR and the Ginn family sings to us.

Aloco. I agree Ginn seems like he is a nice human being. That does not make him a nice wide receiver in the NFL. I would love to see him tear it up - it would be great for the dolphins, but currently the fact is he is not a good NFL receiver - certainly not worth a #9 pick. Oh, and by they way did you know that he sure is fast.

Sadly, we have another coach who is too cowardly to make a change. He will keep Ginn in there forever, and he will allow passes when we are 21 points ahead with an unstoppable rushing attack, and us fans will suffer. It reminds me of when H. Wayne was too cowardly to fire Wannstadt, and we all suffered then as well.
I am praying that new owner Ross fires this fat coach immediately. We need an owner with George Steinbrenner's tenacity who will not tolerate overweight and under-intelligent coach.

ALTO AND JUSTICE, LET'S HEAR ABOUT THE OTHERS ...............FASANO,THE DL LINE,JT,PORTER ,CROWDER,WILSON.....STOP IT ABOUT GINN ....CAN YOU GIVE TO THE OTHERS LIKE YOU DOING IT TO TED ,COME ON

Marc - Ginn gets payed a ton of cash to do what he does - if his confidence is getting hurt by us then what do think that cornerback talking trash in his face is doing to him. Come on if he can't handle it then that is another example of his weakness. What do you want us to say - hey Ginn I know that is only the 100th game changing pass you dropped, but it is ok you're still the best. He is who he is - we have seen enough game film.

Ginn playing dominoes instead of working on his stone hands and going over some game film. What a PUNK and on top of all that he avoids the media and taking the heat for his screwups. GET RID OF GINN AND HIS FAMILY!

i declare ALTO as a CREEP

The only problem us u can't by a superbowl like the Yankees buy championships in baseball. Even if you could we have never had a owner willing to spend the $$. If sprano is the problem. (and I'm not ready to give up on him) hopefully the tuna will have the balls to fire him.

Oh and Marc looks like Jason Allen (special team ace I dare say) is about to get another chance to prove himself - again. I hope you're right about him.

Brett144 is right on.

"they're probably smelling themselves, rubbing each other's balls, all that sh*#..." I really think that Crowder was talking about Sparano and Ginn feeling each other up. Why else would he leave Ted "Stone Hands" Ginn on the field? I cant think of a better reason.

Bench Ginn and Wilson.. Coach RUN!!RUN!!! RUN THE BALL!! THAT's WHAT I LIKE!!!! THAT's WHAT WE DO!!!!

Certainly ALoco - wake: great pass rusher this guy could be special. Fasano: man what a let down this year I truly expected more from him probably biggest let down thus far. Porter: well Joey is Joey tough player having an off year due to injury, I still like him. Crowder: good player with a porter type mouth on steroids who can not back it up, we need bigger plays and less costly childish personal fouls. JT: can't help but root for him solid player. Merling: needs more consistent play, I expect more. Wilson: flop. Bell: starting to play better but seems to have leveled off overall with career potential. Smith & Davis: as I have said before the next Madison & surtain. Henne: solid but I still want to see what happens when teams have more game film on him. O-line: what can you say when they lead the league in rushing, I still expect more though. Just to be complete Carpenter: very good kicker. Anyone else?

Finfan , Exactly when did miami have a chance to get Calvin jackson ! Can you please explain. i don't know much about the dolphins and their drafts. :)

Aloco. Satisfied? Is that too "Creepy"?

To Rephrase:

1. Bench Ginn
2. Bench Wilson
3. Fire Special Teams Coach
4. Stop Playing White

Oh and Ginn is still fast.

BEEN A DOLPHINS FAN MY ENTIRE LIFE ! IT IS VERY EXCITING TO SEE HENNE PLAY. THIS YOUNG QB HAS POISE AND HAS A CANNON. HE THREW A GREAT PASS TO GINN AND HE FUMBLED AROUND AND GOT TIPPED. HENNE IS GOING TO BE A VERY GOOD QB IF WE GET AN ANQUAN BOLDIN OR VINCENT JACKSON. OBVIOUSLY PATRICK TURNER IS NOT VERY GOOD IF CANT MAKE ACTIVE ROSTER WITH THIS GROUP OF WR. HENNE WILL BE A SUPERSTAR. GREAT SIZE, ARM STRENGTH AND HAS A LITTLE MOBILITY. HE NEEDS RECEIVERS. AND TED GINN IS TERRIBLE. HE CANT CATCH THE BALL. IT'S LIKE PUTTING YOUR WORST BASEBALL PLAYER IN LEFT FIELD. HE CANT CATCH !! GINN HAS GOT TO GO !! ANQUAN BOLDIN, DAVONE BESS, BRIAN HARTLINE AND GET ANTHONY GONZALEZ FROM COLTS. WHAT WE WOULD GIVE TO STILL HAVE WES WELKER. PERHAPS THE WORST PLAYER OF ALL ON DOLPHINS THOUGH IS GIBRIL WILSON. WHAT A JOKE. CUT HIM TODAY. CONVERT JASON ALLEN BACK TO SAFETY AND ROTATE HIM WITH CHRIS CLEMONS. OUR SECONDARY IS TERRIBLE. FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT WITH DAVIS AND SMITH BUT GIBRIL WILSON IS AWFUL. ALSO WHY DO YOU QUIT RUNNING THE BALL IN SECOND HALF WHEN THAT IS YOUR BREAD AND BUTTER. COACHING HAS GOT TO GET IT TOGETHER. THIS TEAM IS VERY CLOSE TO BEING A VERY GOOD TEAM BUT RUNNING OUT OF TIME RICKY AND RONNIE ARE NOT GETTING ANY YOUNGER. BUT WRITE IT DOWN CHAD HENNE WILL BE AN ELITE QB IF GET HIM SOMEONE TO TOSS IT TO !!!

RUN!!!RUN!!! RUN THE BALL!!!
play Action..

I'm still so MAD! I want to hurt some Jets Fans it will make me feel better : )

" Calvin jackson is another elite receiver we passed on in the draft " posted by FinFan. WHEN ?

I think white is starting to see that everyone in the NFL is as fast as him. I don't exactly feel comfortable with him in the game. I am not sure on the coaches thought process: giving him gametime reps? Do they believe he is going to make a big impact? Testing the other teams response to him in the game? Setting up the Patriots???

White should have pitched the ball to Ronnie

But I like him give him time

I read Ginn played DB god I can tell with hands like his

ALTO, YOU MADE PORTER LOOK LIKE HE WON THE SUPER BOWL .YOUR HATE FOR TED GINN IS VERY CLEAR.YOU SHOULD SAY,
FASANO MY AZZZZZZZZZ

JT MY AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
CROWDER MY AZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
WILSON MY F,..G AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
PORTER ...RETIRE ALREADY MY AZZZZZZZZZZZZ

EVEN THE PLUMBER AGREES W/ME

RUN!!!RUN!!! RUN THE BALL!!!
play Action..

IN DARK NIGHT IT WAS 24-3 BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
THEN THE GAME ENDED 134-34...KOW THAT HAPPENED .BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.MARIA GET ME MY MEAT BALL SUB

MORE COW BELL

GOOD NIGHT GIRLS

A couple of stats on Ginn. His 211 receiving yards currently ranks him as the 63 best receiver in the NFL. His YAC (yards after catch) is a total of 14 on 18 total catches. He is averaging less than a yard per catch which is pretty difficult to do. You should average a yard and a half if you just fall forward when you're tackled. He is an absolute horrible route runner and has bricks for hands. He can effectively only run one pattern (deep ball) but half the time he drops the pass when it gets to him. It's time to inactivate the guy and try and trade him to Cleveland in the offseason. Mangenius may be the only guy dumb enough to give up a draft pick for him.

Dolphins picked 9th the year Johnson came out and he was picked second by Detroit. It was a weak draft year but if a strong offer was made to Detroit I'm sure they could have moved up. We have alawys been afraid to give up picks which is understandable but at some point you have to want to win now and give up a future pick to benefit now

It's painful to see Ted Ginn continue to drop the ball...he is not a primary receiver. The truth is we don't have a primary wr, but that is not a secret. My main question is: why do we continue to give teddy the ball over guys like Bess Camarillo or even Patrick Turner. Ginn clearly is not suitable for the role that we're trying to force him into...

Finfan , you said miami passed on calvin jackson. Which is BS. What's more ridiculous is your assumption that maimi could've traded up to get him. Detriot was never , I repeat NEVER ! going to trade that pick. Jackson was the best player in the draft at the time. So for you to say miami passed on or could've had calvin jackson is FALSE and UNFAIR. :)

You know how coaches always criticize say the fans think everything is so easy? In some cases, it IS easy.
DON'T TAMPER WITH SUCCESS. Outside of a few plays, the Saints could not stop the run. So what do we do? We pass it. Why? Why? Why?
Even at the end, with 13 yards to go for a first down. Why try to "keep the defense honest" and all the b.s.? Just hand the ball off. Why does Fat Tont complicate it?

Look, it's simple. Fat Tony and Scam Cameron are the only two guys on the face of this earth who feel that Ted Ginn is a better player than Bess, Hartline, and Camarillo. Those 3 guys play their guts out each week, only to have Fat Tony spit in their face and bench them in favor of the Ginn family.

Bill the Porpoise raises some excellent statistics, but Fat Tony will not see those stats because he is too busy eating and calling pass plays and timeouts while we are WINNING by 21 points.

NJPHINF"KER,

YOU JUDGE AND JURY< GO SCREW OFF YOU POLITCAL JACK AZZZZZZ

Trade Ginn & Camarillo, one are unable to catch the ball, and the other made bone-head decisions (the loss of downs, play)for some kind of a receiver or draft picks. Trade Safety Wilson (unable to tackle ball carries over the last six games) for draft pick and activate the rookie (Clemons)or Jayson Allen, anyone with tacklering ability.

What! Miami never could have had Calvin Jackson! Now we could have had D. Bowe, Meecham, A. Gongzales, Steve Smith, G. Olsen, Sidney Rice, and on and on. But we got Ginn, Beck, and Booker. The core 3, ughhh! What's done is done. A 2007 1-15 team, let's move forward and look to what the 2010 draft brings.

LMAO ! cuban menace spelled Finnfan wrong trying to impersonate the real FinFan. What a f'n idiot.

I invited Ginn over for dinner and he showed up...With the whole Family!

We watched MNF and the pre-game show where he was featured in the C'MON Man segment.

Being called out and luaghed at by Meshawn...Dang He wasn't fast but he could get a friggen first down now and again

We played dominoes after dinner

I asked him to run to the neighbors for a cup of sugar...damn he's fast...but he dropped it

He had to leave early because he hadn't been sleeping well...something about nightmares of catching a pass accross the middle and being tackled by a linebacker?

He wanted to get an early start on his sideline drill...he can run to the sideline faster than anyone on the team

Great guy and wonderful family I will have to have tham back soon

Go Phins!

I was wondering how long it would take for sparano to tell us again how good ginn is. The dolphins do not play their best players the play their highest played players. That decision will bring them an 8-8 season if they are lucky. They need good receivers to go along with a great running game. New Orleans shut the run down in the second half and every other team in the NFL that plays the dolphins this year will study that tape. Sparano is a good coach but I can't say the same about the O and D Coordinators.

the only reason im against the benching of butter fingers jr. is that he still adds the deep ball threat to our offense. obviously if he's not catching the ball he's not helping but he still brings speed to the table. if they can find another WR with speed to match ginn's, than fine bench him, cut him, whatever.

Playing dominoes??? he should be out there in the practice field catching balls or in the wieght room getting stronger so he won't be so afraid of getting hit...he'worthless. i'mvery disapont it with Sparano back paddling with this guy, i thougth Sparano was the tell ti like it is kind of guy, but i guess he's a whimp too.

Tony Sparano has to defend Ted Ginn, because Ted Ginn would no longer be in the NFL if he didn't! Oops!

Ginn limits our options on the field on offense. Detriment to Henne's growth as he loses confidence everytime he throws to him and he drops it. I can't believe he played DB in college...he doesn't want contact everytime he gets the ball.

Seriously, I think our fans on this site ask better more to the point questions than the media...yeah, you Armando. No matter what happened Sunday, it's done and shake it off bec. we're facing our most hated rival. Sparano shows me he's a team coach first of all and glad he fessed up with the stupid time out thing..that is NOT happening again. I'm so glad to hear Sparano going to give Hartline more time, he is GOOD! The more he's out there the more he's going to show us how good. He's not afraid to hit and get hit...something Ginn obviously shys away from..and where does he get the cohones to not speak to the media until Wed.? He's an unimpressive player and he calls when HE wants to speak??? Excuse meeeeee? But his name is not Larry Fitz. BTW, does anyone have any knowledge of whether Coach Parcells has game input?

Randall "thrill" Hill' Yatil Green, John Avery, Ted Ginn Jr... Fits don,t it?

I'm all for replacing Ginn in the lineup, but where would the deep threat be. We don't have one. And if there is not deep threat, then teams are going to crowd the line and slow down our running game. Another thing is, look at what Indy did, 1st play,,,TD. Why aren't we throwing deep, 1st play from scrimmage?

Gin should be used only 0 plays a game or less if possible

Or better send him to the marlyns where there is no contact

Patrick Turner or even
Pat white can do it better for sure at least not worse

From what I can see, coach Sparano has to show loyalty to his players. But lets not forget, this issue was brought out after the pre-season when it was said that Miami did not draft a pure number receiver. Ginn is not that. There is not a team in the NFL that would put their season on his shoulders. He doesn't show instinct. He may have speed and that is good when you are on the track team but in the NFL the idea is to catch the ball. We let two great receivers go in Welker and Chambers go and we kept Ginn. Its a mistake that will haunt the coach for as long as he is here. Henne needs a core of dependable receivers to throw to and right now he doesn't have it. Coach Sparano should bench Ginn and see if he has the stones to step up to the plate and show himself and we the fans that he is an NFL receiver. Otherwise, sit down and let the team find someone that does.

You phinz phans are so funny to me. None of you were complaining when you all had the lead 24-3 with Wilson and Allen were knocking down Brees passes in the first half. Nor were you bitching when you were the recipient of their turnovers and the Mild Cat was working in your favor. Listen, what happen was N.O went in a halftime and came back with 8 in the box and dared yall to run. They left Ginn one on one and the other receivers and decided that you all couldn't beat them with the pass. Thats why they stop running the Mild Cat. Furthermore, check the rushing stas for the first half veresus the second. Quit making excuses. You guys just got your ass handed to you and watch the game with your head and not your heart. This way you can understand whats going on. PHINZ SUCK.... LETS GO STEELERS

The phinz are a one hit wonder. You all cant run a conventional offense so you adopt the Mild Cat. Good defenses always cage it like Sunday. The receiving corp gets no respect so teams are going to just stop the run and not worry about the pass because your #9 draft pick couldn't catch a cold butt naked in Barrow, Alaska.

It's all too obvious that Ginn is a favorite of Sparano and Parcells, for whatever reason. He would have been dropped long ago by the Rams or Raiders.

Although Sparano and Parcells have most certainly realized their mistake by now, it's apparrent that neither one of them has the "granoles" to do anything about it. Neither one wants to "eat crow" and both will do anything to save some face... even if it's at the risk of hurting the team they are supposed to be looking out for.

We Dolphin fans have little to hope for the rest of this season, other than MORE of the SAME. It seems to easy to most fans to simply replace Ginn with Hartline, and Turner with Hartline's vacated slot.
