Victory Monday update from Tony Sparano

The players were off today but the coaches were working and this is what coach Tony Sparano's view of his team is 24 hours after the 30-25 victory over the Jets.

First, after getting the game ball for his two kickoff return touchdowns against New York, it seems unlikely Ted Ginn Jr. will be getting added special team duties as Miami's punt returner anytime soon.

"Right now I'm thinking we'll leave it the way I have it and coach the heck out of it," Sparano said before adding that punt returner Davone Bess, who had a fumble on Sunday, "can't make bad decisions" on his returns.

I think this is a mistake. Ginn played only 22 snaps Sunday and, while he remains limited in what he can do as a receiver, he does have special and elite skills as a return man. So why not use those skills more?

It might be easy to forget that in college, Ginn returned both punts and kickoffs and was actually more explosive on punts. He returned 64 punts for a 14.1 yard average at The Ohio State University and six of those were for TDs. He only returned two kickoffs for TDs.

Ginn actually returned 9 percent of his punts for touchdowns while returning 5 percent of his kickoffs for touchdowns. But hey, Miami's coaching staff is insistent that isn't going to happen right now.

Of course, they were insistent on not letting Ginn return kickoffs until Patrick Cobbs blew out his knee.

Sparano didn't say whether Ginn gets his starting WR job job anytime soon, but did say there were two pass plays against New York on which Ginn got behind the defender and quarterback Chad Henne was unable to get him the ball.

On other subjects:

Sparano said he attempted the two-point conversion when the team was up 11 in the fourth quarter because, "I was trying to take a scenario out of play in that the only scenario that could beat us was two touchdowns."

In other words, Sparano wanted a 13-point lead so that the Jets could not tie with a touchdown, a two-point conversion and a field goal or win with one touchdown and two field goals. Obviously Miami failed on it's bid for the conversion.

This season in the NFL two-point conversions are successful approximately 30 percent of the time.

On the subject of Miami's two rookie cornerbacks, both of whom will be under much scrutiny this week with Tom Brady and Co. on the schedule, Sparano was generally pleased with Sean Smith and Vontae Davis.

"Both picked different points to play well," the coach said. "Both had bumps and that's what's going to happen."

Although they combined for a total of 162 plays, Sparano said the cornerbacks had no mental errors. There were, however, technical errors that numbered in the single digits between the two that need to be cleaned up.

By way of a player update, Sparano said rookie receiver Patrick Turner's "had a couple of good, solid weeks of practice right now and he's getting better and better. I would say sooner or later we'll see him."

Yeah, why put Ginn in on punts? We wouldn't wanna win...Clowns

Ginn punts end of discussion

Sign. Chambers from the chargers just let go

up 11 kick xp! Can't score td, 2 point conversion, and field goal for 12 points. Think someone forgot to check Sparano's math

Why not use a player for all his strengths? Who gives us the best chance of scoring on both returns? Ginn should be running kick off and punt returns! But hey what do I know, I'm not the coach. Just a Phinatic!

Generally returning punts is more about agility and tackle breaking ability. Ginn has only decent agility and lowsy break tackle ability.

Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!!Get chambers!!!!! *lousy

Not having ginn run back punts is pure stupidity. Sometimes I wonder about these coaches. They can't see the forest thru the trees. In the wildcat we have plays where it goes back to the qb to throw it. Here we now have henne who could def bomb it to someone like ginn way past defenders at that point. Why did they stop? We need to do it three times a game to get them from crowding the box on runs. Then the wildcat would be doing better against new Orleans and jets. Don't see why if I can figure it out they can't. Very frustrating

I agree. Sign Chambers. He'd be a free upgrade.

Armando-

Please tell me they are finalizing a deal with Chris Chambers...Let Ginn return kicks and be a nice back-up speed WR.

We need Chambers.

BRING BACK CHAMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. WHAT DO WE GOT TO LOSE?

I ditto the Chambers sentiment, He is the type of guy we could really use right now. Problem is... who do you cut?

Armando, I'm more upset with our "D" than with our offense believe it or not. Why is it that they always dominate in the first half of a game and simply suck in the second? Now I'm not saying I know football anymore than Pasqualoni or any coach in the NFL, some fans would like to think they do but they're kidding themselves obviously. But having said that, there's one thing I don't understand at all. We always hear about how we've got 3 awesome pass rushers in JT, JP and Wake. Everytime it'S 3rd and long, why the heck don't we put all 3 on the field and BLITZ??? Have you noticed how the dominating defenses in the NFL, everytime it's 3rd and long, they bring the heat?? That 3rd and 11 at the end of the game where Sanchez had all the time in the world and found Keller, who caught the ball but would of been a first down regardless cause Torbor was called for pass interference. Why in the world don't we blitz?? Funny, when Miami has a 3rd and long. notice how other teams bring the heat?? Why not us?? We can't get some regular pass rush out of Langford, Ferguson, Soliai or anyone else. Starks had a good game but he's not going to get double digit sacks when the season's over. So why not blitz and send our 3 studs?? I don't get it. Thanks Armando

One other thought on Chambers: he has more experience than any receiver we have right now, which would help our receiving corps mature. Letting him go would just seem, well, incredibly shortsighted.

Wow If we could pick up Chambers That would be great.Bring him back it was a big mistake let him go.

Get Turner ready and put him on the field. See what he can do. Go foward not backward.

Sparano just summed up what an absolute idiot he is and how unfit he is to be a head coach. With any good coach we are 5-2 and not 3-4. Coaching lost us teh Saints game and the Indy game with horrible time management and use of time outs. Now to elect to use Davone Bess who quite frankly does nothing for me on punt returning, instead of Ginn who was the BEST in college football at returning kicks is ridiculous. The coaching staff has repeatedly made lousy choices and has done nothing to upgrade our wr position which badly needs upgrading. Chris Chambers is available but dont hold your breath dolfans, even though he is clearly better than anyone on our team. Sparano and Bill wont pull the trigger on a deal because they obviously care not about wr's. Folks when do we start to hold this staff accountable for the fact that the gameplanning sucks on both sides of the ball? Looking to next week we have Welker and Moss to cover and while i feel the offense will have much more success against the Pats defense, it wont matter if we allow Brady and crew to pass us outta Foxboro. Brown had 12 touches, not enough for for us to be successful on offense. Oh and the fact that 2 seperate drives in which Henne looked good and passed us into good field position we switched over to the wildcat which screwed us and didnt convert. We are forcing the Wildcat offense into the game while we keep denying our "qb of the future" a chance to finish drives off and get into a rythmn. I for one really like Henne and think he can be the guy for a while but not if Henning is our Offensive coordinator. Also i love the wildcat but lets only use it on short yardage scenarios as its too risky on 1st downs since we stand the chance of losing yardage thus making it 3rd and 13 for our qb. Very unfair for Henne to set him up that way.

Was the score not 30-19 before the extra point? You go up 12 and it takes 2 TDs to beat you. How would the yets have scored a TD and 2 FGs in under 8 min? Am I missing something here?

There have been quite a few games this year where Sparano has made some questionable calls. It's starting to worry me.

Hell yea, bring back chambers, the guy is by far better than any reciever we have, and we would get him back at the expense of the chargers trading a second round pick for him in 2007. I would cut bess in exchange for chambers any day of the week. He knows our system better than anyone here.

Coach Norv Turner said the Chargers released Chambers because of the emergence of Malcom Floyd(notes) and the need to sign a linebacker because of an injury to Tim Dobbins(notes) on Sunday.

Look guy our "D" is hurting because they spend to much time on the field. our offence get to many 3 and out or they score to fast. What happen to the long drives. In the 4th the last games they have no Gas left. But way to MAN UP

I would be fine with Chambers, as long as he doesn't play like Marylin Chambers. Come to think of it.....even if he does play like her, sign him up!!!!!!!!!

I think most people knew coming out of college that Ginn's strength was returning kicks.

The Dolphins would be doing Ginn and themselves a favor by making him a #3 or #4 receiver and delagating him to all kick and punt returns.

This is an exerpt from Frank Coyle's scouting report when Ginn was coming out (Frank Coyle is from Rivals.com)

"A dynamic playmaker with the talent to change a game with one play. He should have major impact in the return game as a rookie. He is the best return specialist I have ever scouted - even better than Devin Hester, who draftinsiders.com rated last year as the top returner in the past decade. "

I never understood Cobbs (kick offs) returning versus Ginn and I don't understand Bess (punts) versus Ginn either.

those guys are fine but they can't change a game like Ginn did yesterday - there aren't many guys that can - why not play into his strengths?

Chambers??

Your take please Mando.....

I agree, sign Chambers. Ginn is just a flash in the pan, good for one or two big plays every 8 games. Chambers will give a good, reliable, starting receiver. Sign Chambers!!! Any rumors Armando?

all this team need is a good good WR not a great one but good well do. N i see one right now that can turn this sinking ship around n our pass game, and his name is chambers. n if need b let go of turner, it seem like he cant touch the green grass on sundays any way.....please please get our boy back,we need him n he dont take no picks or trades..GO GET HIM N GIVE HIM A JOB WIT HIS OLD TEAM

Ginn not returning punts is just dumbass sparano being dumbass sparano. He has no thought process. He can react to situations like any normal human being, but he just can't see big picture. It's a shame, because head coaching requires brains.

Sean smith did not play well. He was ate up continuously.

No way on Chambers! Time to move forward already. He was average at best in his prime.

Why is Bess getting these Screens? Shouldn't it be Ricky or maybe even Hilliard? Bess is not going to make anyone miss and is fumbling in all that traffic?

Go Phins!

sign chambers he wants to be a dolphin again.he's still a good reciever.and start patrick turner also. we can still finish 11/5 or 10/6.and still make the playoffs.come on bill parcells be a risk taker.henne can can gun the ball to chambers and turner.lets do this

Signing chambers would make my day!

CHAMBERS MY AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

It feels good to have a classy coach leading the phins. Matches our classy players and fans. That's why Rex Fryan is such a good fit for the Jets. No class excuse makers. Great job Coach Sparano!

Now I seem to remember chambers being called alligator arms & being afraid to go over the middle; the man is 31. No one at the time was in love with the dude and seemed to be happy to ship his butt off for a 2nd, what changed other than he is a year older and possibly slower?

I like Chambers as much as anybody, but I hate to say he isn't near the receiver he was two years ago.

He struggles to get open and when he does, has had more than his share of drops this season.

For nostalgia purposes, I'd love to have him back. But from a football standpoint, I think it's time to move on.

My Nickname for the Special teams this week is...
"GINNglorious Basterds"

Martin, Right?

Ziggy,

These coaches tore apart a team that was damn lucky to win one game and won the division the following year. This year we're 3-0 against the AFC East. I realize the coaches have made some mistakes, but most do. Sparano has 1 year of Head coaching experience and he will learn as well. I think you are being a tad too harsh on this staff. The turn around they've put together is nothing short of amazing to me.

thank you po white gold .WHAT ABOUT STANDIG BY HARLINE,CAMER ,TURNER,FASANO AND THE THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH TED GINN FARMERS .

hey eric,

NEWSFLASH BROTHER, what we have at the reciever position right now is not any brighter, signing chambers now makes more sense in the fact that we would have a guy that we don't need to coach up alot in this system and he has proven that he can make big plays in the passing game in crunch times. I'm not saying sign him to a multi-million dollar deal here, it would probably cost less to bring him here, and would be nowhere near what we gave up for him(i.e. JASON TAYLOR)We could do no worse by giving this guy another chance in miami, and if anything make the ppl around him better such as hartline, cammarillo, or even turner, and god forbid even ginn. This would be a win-win situation for the fins.

inimounts go back to your gay jets web site and talk bout how fat and stupid your coach is and maybe someday we can make the playoffs bunch of losers lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am somehwat intrigued by the Chambers scenario, however it would make more sense to just get the big Patrick Turner on the field; he is young, very big and already signed. That is why they brought in Wilford last year to be that big target. I think the kid would flourish with Henne and vice-versa. If they have a consistent big reciever then it will also pay dividends with the other recievers, especially Ginn.

When the San Diego coach says, the emergence of Floyd Martin..that is football speak for, an unknown rookie is better then Chambers at this point in time...Sprano saying Turner is having good practice weeks is Parcells speak for he is about to play...No to nostalgia and Chambers..Yes to Turner when ready

mando is it at all possible the dolphins would sign chambers?

how sad your team sucks so bad you have to come up with a different user name because your so ashamed wow come on inimounts i mean jetplunger, jetgold -how lame

chambers was a good run blocking wr maybe throw him in the wildcat somewhere and see what happens

Big fan of Tony but...
Blown away on goin for 2 there, thought my head was going to explode
Absolutely inexcusable

Thanks for asking Sparano about going for the two point conversion. In my opinion coaches go for it much too often and it ends up costing the team trying it.This could have very easily been the case Sunday in New York.He talked about wanting to go up 13 in order to remove some scenarios but by going for it and failing he created more of them.It was a bad gamble and Im glad we got away with it this time but 2 point conversions should only be gone for as a last resort.

Thanks ALoco, One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure! Who would ya let go to make space for Chambers? And after you make space on the roster would you pay more than the league Minimum for his old a@#?

Mando, your filter is brutal!

Sure would like some input on Chambers.

superPhin

Chambers knows nothing about the current Dolphin system. The last system he played in was the Cam Cameron experience. He would be behind all of our current receivers in that aspect.

At this point, I don't see Chambers as any sort up upgrade. Nine catches in seven games with a productive quarterback like Rivers tells me he simply doesn't have it anymore.

bobbyd12,

i seriously doubt the chargers would've made this move if they didn't have guys like, Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates, and speedsters that can make plays in Sproles and LT for their offense. The chargers have more depth in terms of reciever where in areas we lack as an offense. Letting chambers go was evident becuz of that. Miami could use him in the NOW to compete in 2009, not for the future when guys like turner and hartline begin to excell, thats what i'm saying here. Its not like miami won't go after another pro bowl type reciever in the offseason as well.

A couple of points:

1) It baffles the mind that in 4 years at Ohio State and 3 years with the Dolphins no one taught Ted Ginn how to hold the football while running back kicks. The man is playing with fire in how loosely he carries the ball. Mark my words, opposing special teams players will deliberately try to swat the ball out of Ginn's hands. And they will likely be successful.

2) Sparano's explanation for the 2-pt. conversion attempt is embarrassingly stupid. (And I'm a huge Sparano fan.) The fact remains that the Dolphins were up by 11 points prior to the conversion attempt. There is a HUGE difference between beimg up by 12 and being up by 11. (If you're up by 12, only 2 TDs can beat you. If you're up by 11, New York can tie with a 2-pt. converted TD and a FG.) Therefore, kick the extra point! All you accomplish by going for 2 and going up by 13 is that it ensures the Jets have to make both extra points to win.

This was a no-brainer. Sparano failed. His choice to go for two was indefensible, and the fact that he doesn't see that is disturbing.

3) Tomorrow is my first time voting as an American citizen. I am very excited. While I'll only be voting in municipal races, I intend to vote for those candidates who will cut my taxes, rein in spending, kill criminals and protect us from Islamist terrorists. I guess some of those aren't municipal issues, but still ....

Right Po White..who do you let go to sign a receiver who won't be around in a couple years when this team will be a REAL Superbowl Contender...we are not one receiver away from the SB...stay on course

Moving onto the Fins v Pats will Sparano finally move Davis and Smith to keep them on Welker and Moss? It seems like that would be smart since Smith matches up with Moss and Davis with Welker better than the other way around... It seems like many other teams move their CB's around but the Fins don't, why is that?

What are your thoughts Mando?

I have Charger fans in the family and watches the team regularly. He sarcastically asked me a few weeks back if Chambers was on the team. He played in a pass happy offense and couldn't make a difference. Unfortunately, I don't think he's the answer.

eric,

well if thats true, our system doesn't seem to be working with the recievers we hav now as every game up to this point would tell us. Besides as a reciever, systems don't change drastically compared to route runnings, i mean he knows how to do curl routes, post patterns, stop and gos,i.e. look at braylon edwards when he went to new york, he doesn't have to be a 100 yrd reciever to be successful. It would give defenses another speedy reciever(granted a bit more older) with experience at his position to defend than anybody miami has right now!!

Tony Sparano is by far the best coach we have had since Don Shula.. And in my opinion he is one of the three smartest coaches in the league. This guy understands football about as well as anyone has ever understood anything. The Sparano haters need to stop talking and check back in three years, see if you think he's stupid then.

Nathaniel, have you seen Ohio State play football? Not a very pro style offense they play there. Other than David Boston, can't think of one non running back on offense to make a difference in the pros.

BB12,Superbowl is the goal! Don't do what the Jets have done, sold there future for this crap they call a team...

Jets SUCK! Three sweep and counting!
